Have you ever imagined wolves as climate heroes? A new study has found that bringing them back to the Scottish Highlands could actually help save our planet. Wolves can play a big role in encouraging woodlands to grow. These forests can then take in more CO₂ which causes climate change.
Today, there are no wild wolves in the UK. They were hunted to extinction (灭绝) in Scotland over 250 years ago. Without wolves, the number of red deer has increased a lot because there are no natural enemies to keep their population in control. While this is good news for the deer, it is bad for Scotland’s woodlands. Red deer love to eat young trees, which stops the forests from growing. Right now, only 4% of Scotland’s land is covered by woodland. This is much lower compared to some other European countries.
A team of researchers from the University of Leeds used a computer model to see what would happen if wolves were reintroduced to four areas in the Scottish Highlands. They found that a total population of around 167 wolves would be enough to reduce (减少) the number of red deer. This would allow trees to grow and the woodlands to grow larger. In fact, the forests could take in and store another one million tonnes of CO₂ every year.
However, the researchers knew that some people would not like the idea of bringing wolves back. Farmers who raise cows and sheep are worried that wolves might attack (袭击) their animals. Lee Schofield, who worked on the study, said that the team wanted to provide new information to help people understand the benefits (好处) of reintroducing wolves. They hope that by sharing their findings, more people will see that wolves can be good for the environment and our planet.
