Zac and I are best friends because we both love football. Zac was taller and stronger than me. But my speed gave me an advantage in games. When we were 15, we were proud to join the Springtown Stars which was the best under-17 team in our area. There was another team called the Springtown Asteroids. They trained just as hard as us, but didn’t play in important matches very often.
One day, the coach put up the new season’s team list. My finger was shaking as I looked for my name. Zac’s name was on the list, but mine wasn’t. I said to myself. “There must be a mistake!” I felt heartbroken. Being on the Asteroids made me feel like closer.
After joining the Asteroids, I was really angry. I kicked the ball hard and didn’t care when my teammates passed the ball to me. Every time Zac waved at me, I just turned around. I was so upset.
Everything changed during a Saturday match. The Stars were playing against Riverside United. I hid behind the stands and watched. They worked together so well. Zac could stop those passes that I couldn’t. Then I remembered that while I was busy getting angry, Zac was practicing free kicks every Tuesday and Thursday.
When the game ended, I waited at the exit, I said to Zac, “Your winning kick in the second half was so cool!” and I put up my hand. He gave me a high-five, which made me feel warm inside. He said excitedly, “Coach said you’re getting much better now. If you keep training hard, we’ll be teammates again.”
That night, I made a new plan and stuck it on my wall: more practice, more time. I realized being on the Asteroids was not a punishment. It was a chance for me to grow. I’ve learned that getting angry won’t help you succeed. True success comes from continuous effort, not just wishful thinking or expecting things to fall into place without hard work.
24. Why did the writer feel heartbroken?
A. Because he wasn’t taller and stronger than Zac. B. Because there was a mistake in the Stars’ list.
C. Because his name was not on the Stars’ list. D. Because the Asteroids trained even harder.
25. How did the writer feel after joining the Asteroids?
A. Proud. B. Warm. C. Angry. D. Nervous.
26. What did the writer realize after watching the Stars’ match?
A. Winning requires strict rules and more practice.
B. Coaches may make mistakes when making a list.
C. Football players should try to be stars themselves.
D. Success needs more efforts not negative emotions.
C
Think of the smartest person you know. What makes them smart? What good qualities do they have? All cultures think wisdom is important, but not all cultures have the same idea or what it is. For some, being smart is the main thing, while others think being kind to others is very important. In some cultures, you need to have a spiritual part to be thought of as wise. Are there any parts of wisdom that all cultures can agree on?
A group of 34 researchers from all over the world, all eager to find out the secrets of wisdom, got together to study “How people in twelve countries on five continents see wisdom”. The study found two things that everyone thought were related to (与…有关) wisdom.
The first quality a wise person must have is “socio-emotional awareness”. This is about the ability to understand others’ point of view and really care about their thoughts and feelings. However, this person must also have the second quality: “reflective orientation”, which is about using logic (逻辑) and past experience to make judgement. If you just do things because of your feelings and don’t think before you act, then people probably won’t think you are wise. So, if you want to be wise, learn to both keep yourself cool and put yourself in others’ shoes.
But, although this study helps us make a more common idea of wisdom, the world is big and cultures are very different. In The Cambridge Handbook of Wisdom, the writers make an apple pie example, comparing the pie to wisdom. Imagine your grandma makes your favorite apple pie—she stands for the kind of wisdom you think is the best. Now, imagine you take this apple pie to the Amazon rainforest, where apples don’t grow. For the locals, the pie isn’t as good as their own traditional desserts; they have been used to different tastes and things in their food, just as different cultures have developed their own wisdom traditions.
In the end, how wisdom is felt, shared, and valued depends on cultural backgrounds, and these cultural differences enrich the world’s understanding of wisdom, making it more colorful.
27. According to the passage, what can we know about the qualities related to wisdom?
A. Socio-emotional awareness and reflective orientation are important.
B. Smart thoughts and kind feelings are thought to be necessary qualities.
C. Reflective orientation is the key ability to care about what others think.
D. A spiritual part and using logic are necessary to deeply understand others.
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Everyone can easily become wise by just learning two qualities.
B. Different cultures may have different understandings of wisdom.
C. Wisdom is understood exactly the same way in most countries.
D. Traditional apple pie is a popular dessert around the world
29. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Different backgrounds and colorful wisdom.
B. The importance of wisdom in different cultures.
C. A research on different understanding of wisdom.
D. Common idea of wisdom and its cultural differences.
D
“I’m really tired—do you have any ideas for getting a good night’s sleep?” Sleep is not only a common topic in our daily talks but we have also spent many years trying to understand and explain it. After all, we spend about 26 years of our lives sleeping. So, what do we know? Here are the main points from the research in the last ten years.
Studies have shown that getting enough sleep is good for keeping a strong immune system (免疫系统). When we sleep, our body not only rests but also works hard to strengthen our defenses against diseases. So, if you want to stay healthy and avoid getting sick easily, make sure to have a good night’s sleep. It’s not just about feeling refreshed in the morning; it’s also a powerful way to protect your body from illness.
One of the most interesting findings is about lucid dreaming. It seems it’s possible to communicate with people while they’re sleeping. In a study, the researchers found the dreamers could use their thinking abilities, like short—term memory, while sleeping. This connection between the dream world and the real world has brought excitement to the sleep science community.
Sleep can also help our memory and problem-solving. A 2023 review of research by Denis and Cairney noted that when we sleep, our brains go over the things that happened during the day. This is very important for keeping our memories. A 2019 study by Sanders and his team found that people were more likely to solve a difficult problem the next day if the problem was in their minds during sleep. So, if you can’t work out the problem, rest well and return to it in the morning.
What if you are unlucky and don’t get enough sleep? Unfortunately, you may be at higher risk of negative moods and worse emotional controlling. But the good news is that there are lots of ways to help you sleep better. The UK’s National Health Service suggests going to bed at a fixed time, doing some quiet thinking before bed, which they call “beditation” and not drinking coffee before bed.
30. According to the passage, why is getting enough sleep good for our health?
A. It helps us to review daily memories. B. It improves our body to fight diseases.
C. It refreshes mental focus about illness. D. It connects dream worlds with real world.
31. What does the word “lucid” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Clear-minded. B. Strong-willed. C. Strange. D. Wonderful.
32. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. Drinking coffee before bed helps you form beditation.
B. Our brains can get a good rest when we sleep in the night.
C. Sleep is important for daily work and emotional controlling.
D. Dreamers could use short-term memory to solve problems.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show different kinds of sleep disorders. B. To provide trips for improving sleep quality.
C. To explain the science behind lucid dreaming. D. To discuss the importance of sleep and its effects.

Walking Barefoot
Barefoot walking has a long history and we can’t say it was started by just one person. In 2009, Christopher McDougall published the book Barn to Run, which tells the story of the Tarahumara people in Mexico who run long distances barefoot. George Woodville is called “Barefoot Guy” on social media. He shares his barefoot experiences with strangers online. Many people liked his videos and tried walking barefoot.
World Barefoot Day is on the first Saturday of June every year. This day encourages people to walk without shoes. The aim is to make more people know about poor children who can’t afford shoes. Some groups also start activities to collect and give away shoes and money.
If you want to try walking barefoot, you can practise at home or in a safe place. Make sure to check your feet for cuts after each walk and keep your feet clean.
Walking barefoot can offer surprising health benefits. Taking time each day to walk barefoot or step outside and put your feet in the grass can improve your physical and mental health.
Walking without shoes can strengthen the muscles of the feet. People who run without shoes usually have larger leg and foot muscles. What’s more, it helps us improve our balance and posture (体态). Walking barefoot is also good for our mental health.
While walking around barefoot can have many benefits and positive effects on your health, you have to remember that humans invented shoes for a reason. Sure, there are plenty of benefits to walking around barefoot some of the time, but that doesn’t mean that you should just throw away all of your shoes and go all natural all the time.
The most obvious reason for wearing shoes is to protect our feet from environments. Sometimes, we might step on something and get our feet cut. And walking barefoot in some public places may put us at risk of getting diseases like athlete’s foot. Also, if we’re not used to it, it might be a bit hard on our joints (关节). Although there are some risks, the benefits of walking barefoot are really amazing!

例文
Dear Peter,
I’m glad you’re interested in Chinese traditional festivals.
My favorite Chinese traditional festival is the Spring Festival. As the most important festival for all Chinese it is celebrated on the first day of the first lunar month.
I usually spend the Spring Festival with my family. In the morning, we put up Chinese New Year decorations on doors and windows and then pay New Year visits to our relatives and friends. We also send our greetings to people who live far away by telephone or through the Internet. At noon, we have a family reunion dinner together. It is not just about eating. The family also wish each other good luck. And the best thing about Chinese New Year is fireworks. In the evening, we go outside and watch the fireworks go off in the sky. The sky becomes so bright and everybody cheers. It is very exciting.
All in all, the Spring Festival is fantastic during which I can always have great fun. That’s why I like it so much.
I hope you’ll enjoy learning about it.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】例文
The most valuable treasure to me is a gold medal that I won last year.
I used to be very weak and I wanted to make a change when I entered middle school. Luckily, my classmate Tony agreed to help me. He invited me to run with him after school every day. Whenever I wanted to give up, he would encourage me to keep going. Besides company and encouragement, Tony also taught me how to improve my speed and avoid getting hurt. Last year, I took part in the one-kilometer run at the school sports meeting and won the gold medal! How excited I was!
The gold medal really means a lot to me. It not only symbolizes honor and pride, but also proves that persistence is so valuable. Most importantly, the medal represents the precious friendship between Tony and I. Therefore, I will keep it for long as my most valuable treasure.
