B A cancer survivor, artist Nico Cathcart understood the anxiety patients experienced as they walked past the concrete wall leading into VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center at the adult outpatient pavilion(门诊馆). Consequently, she said yes last year when asked to paint a mural(壁 画) on that very wall. “Everyone who walks through those doors is dealing with something heavy,” said Cathcart, who finished the mural in late November. “I hope it gives them lightness. Cancer is tough, but it can’t take away hope.” A Toronto native, Cathcart lived in New York before moving to Richmond. When receiving treatment for thyroid cancer, Cathcart found the art hanging on the walls at Massey helped anchor her. “I’m hoping this mural will do the same,” she said, noting she’s free of cancer. Cathcart was diagnosed (诊断) in her mid-twenties with severe hearing loss. While working in public spaces, Cathcart places a sign nearby to let people know she’s deaf in the event they attempt to start a conversation. “Sometimes it’s helpful to be deaf. My superpower is that when I need to, I can turn around and face the wall and nothing can disturb me. I get to choose when I’m ready to turn around to interact,” she said. In the 12-foot-by-30-foot mural, the viewer appears to be looking up from a field of flowers at a bird flying above with a purple ribbon in its mouth. “It’s my attempt of bringing a positive message 英语 第5页(共11页) of upward motion to those who’re looking at it,” Cathcart said. “The mural’s purple ribbon symbolizes all cancer,” said Shockley, manager of arts in health care at VCU Health, adding, “the work of art is lively and hopeful.” While all of her murals are special in their own way, Cathcart said the mural at Massey will always have an extra special place in her heart. “I was a bit sad finishing it,” she said. “I enjoyed the company of the staff and talking to fellow patients quite a bit. The piece will always be connected personally to my own journey in a way my others might not be.” 24. Why did Cathcart create the mural at Massey? A. To decorate the wall. B. To promote her own work. C. To inspire patients. D. To showcase her artistic skills. 25. What does deafness allow Cathcart to do while working in public spaces? A. Keep focused. B. Trick people. C. Remain creative. D. Be considerate. 26. What aspect of the mural is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. Its style. B. Its moral. C. Its structure. D. Its popularity. 27. What is a suitable title for the text? A. Cancer Survivor’s Journey B. Deaf Artist’s Life C. Treatment Through Art D. Hope from Mural C Within a population in nature, individuals vary in their ability to survive and reproduce, and the winners of this competition shape the next generation. Biologists usually focus on the genetic and environmental causes of this variation, but sometimes organisms just get lucky. A male goat battling for a female’s attention might face a competitor that accidentally slips on a loose rock and dies. A food-seeking bird may happen upon much food before others, just by chance. “Such luck breaks could partly explain why some individuals succeed and others fail,” said Matthew Zippel, an evolutionary biologist at Cornell University. That made him wonder what’s the role of luck and what’s the role of competition in leading to those inequalities in adulthood. To answer that question, Zippel and his colleagues created a society using around 100 genetically identical mice. Groups of about 26 two-week-old mice and their mothers were placed in outdoor enclosures in groups that had the same “resource zones” with food and shelter available to all. The team tracked the mice over 46 days, measuring how they behaved and various aspects of fitness. There was one variable—males compete with each other to form territories and access food while females don’t. “What’s left are these really small contingent experiences besides genetics and environment,” said Zippel. For example, an individual male mouse might just so happen to win a fight with its identical twin over food. That lucky break would help it become bigger than its twin, setting it up to win the next fight. “Such experiences mattered much more for males than females,” the researchers reported, 英语 第6页(共11页) suggesting that competition magnifies (放大) the importance of luck. By the end of the experiment, lucky male mice controlled more territory and encountered about five times as many females as lower-quality males. “The study shows luck can be a major factor of success for humans, too,” said Zippel. “We have individuals who start out with identical genetics and identical resource access, but they still end up in different outcomes in adulthood. That has implications for the study of evolution, and should inspire biologists to consider non-genetic causes of an individual’s success, especially when competition is high.” 28. What made Matthew Zippel decide to conduct the research? A. His encounter with lucky events. B. His curiosity about the impacts of luck. C. His belief on animals’ need for luck. D. His interest in lucky animals’ behavior. 29. What was the society for mice like? A. It was relatively equal. B. It was full of harmonious atmosphere. C. It offered different environments. D. It was a safe shelter for unhealthy mice. 30. What does the underlined word “contingent” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Adventurous. B. Dangerous. C. Occasional. D. Frequent. 31. What can be concluded about luck from the findings? A. It is primarily determined by experiences. B. It works in different ways in different settings. C. It tends to be unavailable to females in nature. D. It may help especially in competitive situations. D “A bird’s experience is far richer, more complex and thoughtful than I’d imagined.” It is a sentence on the first page of David Allen Sibley’s new book What It’s Like to Be a Bird. Sibley is a top bird expert. When he did research for this book, thought, he became convinced of something he had not previously anticipated: Birds routinely make complex decisions and experience emotions. He notes that songbirds use reasoning to figure out which seeds offer the best return for their effort. It won’t automatically be the biggest seed around, because if a small seed had high fat content and a lot of energy, it could be the best choice. They may decide to eat later in the day when they spot enemies nearby, thus keeping at flight-ready status in case they are attacked. Occasionally, Sibley presents birds’ ways that seem to me unpleasant. He describes goose feather as the perfect material sought after for jackets and sleeping bags and reports that globally the most common bird is the chicken, “about 500 million egg-layers and the rest being raised for 英语 第7页(共11页) meat.” Why not devote a line or two to calling out cruelty in these industries? Of course, he does not shy away from other scientific reminders, saying that it's a bad idea to rescue most baby birds, who don't actually need our help. He also asks readers to resist the desire of adopting baby birds observed on the ground. “They are wild animals and can't learn life skills from human parents,” he warns. Sibley’s main aim is to draw attention to the varied North American birds we may encounter in our backyards and nearby parks. He recommends an engaged approach to bird-watching: “You will learn faster if you can be an active observer—draw pictures, take notes, write poetry, or take photos. All of these things make you look a little more carefully and a little longer.” Reading every page of the book, I am amazed by the beauty of birds it describes so beautifully. 32. When Sibley did research for his new book, he was surprised by ______. A. humans’ reliance on animals for survival B. the cruelty of food chain among animals C. birds’ intelligence and complex feelings D. D. the varieties of birds in our neighborhoods 33. What can we learn about songbirds from paragraph 3? A. They usually prefer the biggest seeds. B. They consume a lot of energy each day. C. They are unwilling to delay eating their food. D. They are good at making balanced decisions. 34. How does the author feel about Sibley’s description about chickens? A. Unsatisfied B. Scientific C. Romantic D. Funny 35. What might Sibley suggest readers do during bird-watching? A. Feed the birds so they stay longer. B. Engage in as many ways as they can. C. Adopt baby birds playing on the ground. D. Read his book first and watch them closely. 第二节 (共 5 小题; 每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多 余选项。 As a psychologist, I often see people struggling with an unhealthy attachment to their devices. Each morning when David opened the door, he felt discouraged since online stores had been taking over the market and few people walked into the store. Although he had always believed in the magic of physical books, he was beginning to lose hope as bills kept piling up and his savings were running low. One rainy afternoon, as David was sitting behind the counter in the deserted store, thinking about how to rescue the dying bookstore, a young woman entered and introduced herself as Sophie. “I’m visiting one of my friends in this neighborhood," Sophie said. "She recommended your bookstore for rare books and I decided to check it out. “ Sophie then wandered through the bookshelves, running her fingers along the books. After a while, she picked out a book on gardening a topic she was passionate about and brought it to the counter. “It seems like you're really into gardening,” David said as he rang up the book. “I hope it helps you grow your garden. Plants are like people. They need care, but they can really bloom if you give them the right environment.” “Yes, gardening has been such a peaceful escape for me and it has also helped me reach out to people in my town,” Sophie replied with a big smile and proudly showed David a photo of her pretty garden which was filled with vibrant flowers and lush greenery. “It has become a community garden in my neighborhood!” Before she left the store, she added seriously, “By the way, there's something special about 英语 第11页(共11页) your bookstore.
