Imagine this. There’s an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple? A book called Willpower says willpower (意志力) means choosing what’s better for your future, not just what makes you feel good now.
In 1972, a scientist named Walter Mischel tested 600 kids aged 4-6. He gave each child a marshmallow (棉花糖) and said, “Wait 15 minutes without eating it, and you’ll get a second one.” What happened? About 70% ate the marshmallow right away. But 30% controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow.
Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children. They were in their early twenties. And he found that those who’d shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle (肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. Simple habits like making your bed or brushing your teeth daily can “train” your willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with bigger goals.
But remember: Just like any muscle, your “willpower muscle” can get tired. If you have to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. In that way, you’ll build up your willpower again.
4. How many children got two marshmallows in the Marshmallow Test in 1972?
A. 180. B. 240. C. 420.
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

B. How people train children’s willpower.
C. Willpower influences people’s lives greatly.
6. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. What willpower is. B. Why willpower is important. C. How to build up willpower again.
7. Where is this passage most likely from?
A. A health magazine. B. A science magazine. C. A economy magazine.

In China, car prices are dropping, but the US is facing the opposite situation. This year, buying a car in the US might become more difficult. Experts say new cars could cost $4,000 more than before. Even used cars may be more expensive. “It’s a confusing (令人困惑) time for buyers,” said one expert. A planned 25% tax (税款) on cars imported (进口) from Canada and Mexico could hurt car companies badly.
However, these taxes are paused until April. This is a bad news for buyers who already struggle with high prices and costly car loans (汽车贷款). If the taxes begin later as planned, new car prices might rise by $4,000 to $10,000. Some electric cars could cost even more. This makes life tough (艰难的) for buyers and even harder for car makers.
So what should you do if you need a car this year? Many questions remain, such as whether the taxes will really start and how long they’ll last. If you’re not in a hurry to buy a car, wait and think carefully. Cars are expensive, so it’s wise to research and choose one that fits your needs.
But if you’re ready to buy soon and find a car you like, consider buying it now. For example, electric cars or hybrid cars (which use both gas and electricity) might be a smart choice. The government could give you up to $7,500 back if you buy a new electric car.
8. Why is buying a car harder in the US this year?
A. Fewer cars are being made.
B. Prices of new and used cars are rising.
C. People like bikes more than cars in the future.
9. What does the word “paused” mean in paragraph 2?
A. 激增 B. 取消 C. 暂停
10. What does the text suggest to people who don't need a car now?
A. Wait and learn about cars first.
B. Choose an electric car from Canada.
C. Borrow money from a bank to buy a car.
11. Why might electric cars be a good choice now?
A. They use less electricity.
B. They are cheaper than gas cars.
C. The government offers money back.

A total of 23 spotted seals (斑海豹) were put back into the waters off the coast of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on December 12, 2023 as part of China’s continuous efforts to protect endangered wildlife.
The seals were hunted and sold, but have now been saved and marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea. They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home.
Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They are the only kind of seals that can breed (繁殖) in Chinese waters. They only appear around October every year in Liaodong Bay, and take the long journey back to the Northwest Pacific in May after breeding. They are often considered as “the panda of the sea”.
Thanks to China’s top-class national protection in recent years, the population of spotted seals in Chinese waters has reached around 2,000, while the global population is between 400,000 and 600,000. Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study and research on spotted seals.
To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment, the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992. In January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance.
Since 1992, researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388 spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild.

If the taxes begin later as planned, new car prices might rise by $4,000 to $10,000. Some electric cars could cost even more. This makes life tough (艰难的) for buyers and even harder for car makers.
So what should you do if you need a car this year? Many questions remain such as whether the taxes will really start and how long they’ll last.
