Myopia, also called nearsightedness, is a common vision problem. By 2050, over 50% of the
world’s population is expected to be myopic. High myopia, the most serious form, is thought to affect
10% of the population. Myopia rates, especially among children, have risen dramatically in recent
years, according to a study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
Experts believe this vision problem may be due to(由于 ) more time spent at looking at screens
such as phones and computers and less time spent outdoors. Genetics (遗传因素)are thought to also
play a role. The study looked at children in 50 countries and regions. East Asia had the highest rate of
nearsighted children, more than twice the rate of white children. Japan topped the list. In Japan, 86%
of children were nearsighted. This may be because East Asian kids often start studying when they are
two or three years old. This is earlier than kids in other places. At this young age, their eyes and brains
are still growing. It is a really important time for their eyes.
To stop becoming nearsighted, kids should play outside more and spend less time on screens. They
should also take a break from screens every 20 minutes by looking at something else. This helps relax
the eyes. “School-based vision programs are key for early discovery and correction of myopia,”
according to NEI (the National Eye Institute) Director Michael F. Chiang.
26. According to the study, how many people in the world will be nearsighted by 2050?
A. More than 50%. B. About 10%. C. More than 39%. D. About 86%.
27. Which country has the highest rate of nearsighted children according to the text?
A. Great Britain. B. Japan. C South Korea. D. Russia.
28. Why do children in East Asia have a higher rate of myopia according to the passage?
A. They use screens more often. B. They don’t like outdoor activities.
C. They have more genetics problems. D. They start studying at a younger age.
【九年级英语试题共 10页】第 3页
29. According to the chart, which child is most likely to be nearsighted?
A. A boy living in a rural area. B. A girl living in a rural area.
C. A boy living in an urban area. D. A girl living in an urban area.
30. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. How children become nearsighted. B. Why East Asian children get nearsighted.
C. What children can do to prevent myopia. D. What are the negative effects of myopia.

Speed is often valued in modern times. We praise people who achieve their goals faster than others,
but often miss those who take more time to succeed. Recently, however, a university graduate created a
special scholarship(奖学金) to challenge this way of thinking.
Yu Yifan graduated from Sichuan University this year. In November, he gave 30,000 yuan to his
college to start a scholarship program. Different from traditional scholarships for top students, Yu’s
scholarship is for slow students – those whose grades are below the top 25% of their classmates. Yu
himself remembered feeling lost and anxious when he was falling behind. Support from his mentor (导
师) helped him get back his confidence. “I want to help those who are working hard to catch up, just as
I once did.” Yu told Guangming Net.
Yu’s scholarship not only gave slow students a chance to be recognized (认可) but also changed the
focus from results to the process of learning. While grades and scores matter, they don’t tell the whole
story of education.
As US thinker Mortimer J. Adler once said, “The purpose of learning is growth.” Because of
different learning methods and situations, some students rise to the top quickly, while others take
longer. No matter their speed, students who work hard prepare themselves for both growth and
challenges. Struggles and failures are a natural part of learning, helping students think clearly, solve
problems and develop as successful students.
However, in today’s result-focused world, students are often divided into “winners” and “losers”.
High performers receive regular praise, while the efforts of slow students are often overlooked. This
attitude can hurt their self-confidence and drive.
The scholarship isn’t just about money– it’s a way to show care. It shows that success isn’t just
about grades. Every small step forward counts.
31. How is YuYifan’s scholarship different from traditional scholarships?
A. It is for poor students with low grades. B. It is for the top 25% of students.
C. It focuses on the process of learning. D. It rewards fast-rising top students.
32. What encouraged YuYifan to create the special scholarship?
A. His own experience of falling behind and getting support.
B. His wish to become well-known in school.
C. His dissatisfaction with the traditional scholarship system.
D. His wish to challenge the idea of valuing speed in learning.
33. Which word has the closest meaning as "overlooked" in paragraph 5?
A. Accepted. B. Noticed. C. Expected. D. Forgotten.
34. What is YuYifan’s scholarship about?
A. Students should always compete to be the best.
B. Only students with high scores are successful.

THE NEARSIGHTEDNESS OF CHILDRENWORLDWIDE
C. Everyone who tries hard should be praised.
D. Money is the best way to help students learn.
35. What can we infer from the passage about YuYifan?
A. He didn’t care about his grades when he was a student.
B. He had a hard time with his studies during his college years.
C. He believes slow students can never catch up with fast ones.
D. He thinks learning methods are not important in education.

Have you ever noticed this? Whether in stores or parks, the
women’s restroom always seems very busy. Not only are they crowded
inside, but long lines often go outside as well. Meanwhile, going to the
men’s restroom appears much more smoothly. People come and go
quickly, and you hardly see long lines going outside.
The reasons are varied. First, men’s and women’s needs in
restrooms are not the same. A study in the World Toilet Organization
shows that, due to physical differences, the typical time women spend
in the restroom is about 2.3 times longer than that of men. Women also often use public restrooms for
other purposes, such as fixing their appearance or taking care of children.
To meet these extra needs, women’s restrooms are often designed with less space per user than
men’s. This makes the traditional 1:1 ratio between men’s and women’s restroom space unfair. Liang
Ji, an expert from the China Association of Urban Environmental Sanitation, suggests that a 1:2 ratio
would be more effective.
In recent years, public awareness of this problem has grown. To make it easier, cities start by
raising public understanding. When using public spaces, everyone should consider others’ needs while
meeting their own.
In addition, more cities should be encouraged to support female-friendly restrooms. Reports show
that some public restrooms in Shenzhen, Guangdong, have already used a 1:2 ratio of male-to-female
restroom spaces and have also added smart screens to help visitors check available spaces.
In Changsha, Hunan, two extra women-only restrooms have been added to a railway station’s
public restroom areas. During a trip to Jilin, Jilin province, I also noticed a public restroom that
included a well-designed rest area where visitors could read books or charge their phones, making the
waiting time more comfortable.
These well-planned public services have received a lot of praise. But more importantly, when
women feel more comfortable and valued, our cities will become more welcoming and peaceful places
to live.
36. Why does the writer describe the scene of long lines outside women’s restrooms at the start?
A. To show how many women use restrooms. B.To talk about the importance of restrooms.
C. To explain why men’s restrooms are better. D. To make readers understand and care.
37. Why do women often have to wait in long lines outside public restrooms?
A. They prefer to use public restrooms in groups.
B. They spend more time and have more needs.
C. There are fewer public restrooms for women.
D. They like to fix their appearance in the restroom.
38. What ratio of male-to-female restroom space does Liang Ji suggest?
A. 1:1 B. 2:1 C. 1:2 D. 2:3
【九年级英语试题共 10页】第 5页
39. How do the cities ease women’s restroom shortage?
A. By raising public understanding when using public spaces.
B. By designing women’s restrooms with less space per user.
C. By adding smart screens to help check available spaces.
D. By setting up comfortable rest areas in public restrooms.
40. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Creative design of public restrooms.
B. The improvement of public restrooms.
C. Men’s and women’s restrooms: Big Differences.
D. Women’s public restroom needs differ from men’s.

Climate change brings rising temperatures, increased sea levels, and drought (干旱). However, its
effects don’t end there – it can also change the taste of food.
In southern Spain, black Iberian pigs look for food under centuries-old oak trees, a key to the
unique(独特的 ) taste of the Jamon Iberica, a special cured ham (腌制火腿 ) made from these pigs.
However, according to National Geographic, more heat waves and a five-year drought have reduced the
number of the trees’ acorns (橡子 ) as well as the grass around them. Without these natural food
sources, the pigs need extra (额外的) feed, which changes the unique taste of the ham.
Drought also affects the taste of fruits. Watermelons and cantaloupes (香瓜), for example, show
greatly smell and taste changes during drought conditions. According to researchers at the Agrifood
Research and Technology Center of Aragon in Spain, compounds (化合物 ) such as sugars build up
during drought, changing the taste of food, either for better or for worse.
Beyond drought, rising temperatures and sea levels also influence food tastes.
Warm days and cool nights help fruits develop the best taste by increasing their
sugar amount and acidity (酸度). However, global warming is changing this. For
example, Japanese apples are becoming less acidic, softer, and drier because they
flower early and grow in higher temperatures. Oysters, which do best in a mix of
salt and freshwater, are losing their unique taste because rising sea levels are
making their environment too salty.
While the food we eat is affected by climate change, our food choices also influence the climate.
Meat and milk products, especially from cows, cause a lot of greenhouse gases given off. Raising farm
animals makes up about 14.5% of the world’s total greenhouse gases sent out, similar to the gases sent
out from cars and other moving machines. Producing protein(蛋白质) from animals uses more land,
energy and water than protein from plants.
While this seems like a vicious cycle (恶性循环), it can be broken. For example, the Good Food
Institute, a US-based think tank, believes people will choose alternative (备选的) proteins if they are as
tasty and affordable as meat. Meanwhile, more farmers are practicing “greener” farming, and when
people buy local, in-season produce, the influence on the environment is reduced.
41. What is the main reason for the unique taste of Jamon Iberica?
A. The natural food from the oak trees. B. The special cooking methods.
C. The extra feed given to the pigs. D. The long-lasting drought in Spain.

Jin Ying, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a three-month
training course on acupuncture and tuina (针灸推拿 ) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of
Chinese Medicine.
Jin’s life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five
Elements theory (五行学说). For example, she avoided sweating too much during exercise in winter
because the cold of winter means people should slow down, according to TCM. For her, learning these
skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about accepting a new lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people becoming interested in TCM. A survey by China
Youth Daily showed that 93.3% of the 1,000 young people who took part had tried different TCM
treatments.
“I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck pains, which are usually related
to the elderly. And more and more young people coming here also have pains in back, so they come to
me,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital affiliated with Beijing University
of Chinese Medicine.
Between western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM “because of its efficacy (疗
效 ),” according to Ma. Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different
prescriptions (处方). “This is actually an advantage of TCM, rather than a shortcoming, as it can be a
more accurate (精准的) treatment for different patients,” Ma explained.
Younger age groups are accepting TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also good for young people.
As Jin noted, “It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is believed to be a
treasure of our Chinese culture.”

Dear Mr. White,
I am writing to apply for the Excellent Graduates.
I work hard in school. When I had trouble with science last term, I asked my teacher for help after class every day. I also studied with my friends on weekends. In the end, I got a good grade on the final test. I love playing sports, too. Every afternoon, I play basketball with my classmates. Last month, our class played against another class. Even though we lost, I learned a lot from the game. I also like helping others. I always offer to help my classmates with their schoolwork. It makes me feel happy.
I really hope I can be an “Excellent Graduate”. I am looking forward to your early reply.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
