In recent years, over 100 Chinese cities, including Shanghai and Shenzhen, have introduced smart waste sorting systems (系统) to solve some environmental problems. These systems use colored bins—green for food waste, blue for recyclables like paper and glass, and black for non-recyclables. Citizens who sort trash correctly gets points through mobile apps. These points can be exchanged for small gifts, making the process both fun and rewarding.
A study shows that proper recycling reduces landfill waste by 40%. Workers separate collected materials at processing centers. Plastic bottles become fibers for clothes, food waste turns into fertilizer (肥料). This cycle not only saves resources (资源) but also cuts air pollution caused by burning trash.
However, challenges remain. Some people, especially the elderly, find the rules confusing, since they lack awareness. To solve this, communities organize weekend workshops where experts use simple videos and tests to teach sorting methods. Students from local schools also act as “green volunteers,” creating colorful posters and games to help neighbors remember the rules.
The government has set clear goals to support this effort. By 2025, more than 80% of residential areas in cities will have recycling stations within 500 meters. These stations will include smart bins with screens showing sorting guides. “It’s not just about technology,” says environmentalist Dr. Wang. “It’s a teamwork between citizens, companies, and policymakers.”
With these combined efforts, Chinese cities are moving toward a greener future. As one volunteer said, “Every small action counts. When millions of people work together, we can protect our planet.” Step by step, waste sorting is turning cities into healthier, happier homes for everyone.
51.How are the plastic bottles dealt with at the processing centers?

Cutting down fatty food or exercising more are the most popular ways to lose weight, but have you ever thought about whether our noses play a part in our weight?
According to a recent study, not being able to smell our food before eating it may cause us to lose weight.
A team of scientists at the University of California Berkeley, US, came to their conclusion (结论) after studying the result of smell and diet (饮食) on a group of mice. Henry, the lead of the study, said he first believed that mice with no sense of smell didn’t feel like eating as much food as the normal mice and end up eating less and became thinner. However, it was discovered that if the mice were unable to smell their food, they didn’t put on weight.
To reach this conclusion, they did an experiment (实验). The first group of the mice was in normal condition. But in the second group, they broke some smelling neuron (神经元) of several mice by using virus (病毒), so their ability to smell was “switched off (关掉)”. Both of the two groups were fed the same amounts (数量) of fatty food. At the end of the experiment, those with their smelling ability switched off had not put on weight, while the first group had put on the pounds. The researchers also showed that “supersmellers” mice put on the most weight.
That is to say, even if the mice were given the same amount of food, the ones with smelling problems put on less weight. In fact, “Sensory systems (感官系统) play a role in metabolism (新陈代谢). Weight gain (增加) isn’t only about the calories (卡路里) taken in; it also has something to do with how those calories are perceived (识别).” Henry told the news.
If it is true in humans, perhaps we can actually make a kind of medicine that doesn’t change the smell of people but still stops that metabolic circuitry (线路). That will be amazing. In the future, the findings could play a role in solving health problems such as overweight. In the meantime, however, getting plenty of physical exercise and eating the right foods are still important ways to keep our bodies in shape.
56.What did US researchers recently discover?
A.Mice that couldn’t smell eat less than usual.
B.Mice with no sense of smell didn’t put on weight.
C.Tasteless food could help mice to lose weight.
D.Mice with a strong sense of smell increased the least weight.
57.How does the writer develop his idea in Paragraph 4?
A.By comparing differences. B.By giving examples.
C.By listing numbers and facts. D.By explaining the reasons.
58.According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A.Henry used to believe eating less is the main reason of the weight loss of the mice.
B.In the experiment, the mice which are “supersmellers” ate the most food and put on the most weight.
C.The weight we put on only depends on how much calories we take in.
D.Taking exercise and eating the right foods are not so necessary in weight control.
59.Which of the following charts shows the right relation according to the experiment?
A.B.C. D.
60.According to the article, the research findings may be used to ________.
A.treat people with nose problems B.slow the rate of calorie burning
C.help people with weight problems D.guide people to form healthy dieting habits

Are you brave to show yourself at school? Will you try to do something you are not good at? What will you do when others need encouragement (鼓励)? Let me tell you a story.
It was another day to jump rope in the gym class. Lynn and Mike turned the long rope in big, slow circles. The whole class hurried to get in line to wait for their turn to jump. Millie stood at the back of the line and frowned (皱眉).①
Nick went first. He watched the rope and ran in at just the right time. Everyone counted, and he made it all the way to 30 jumps. One after another, the kids watched the rope, ran in and jumped. Then it was Millie’s turn. She watched the rope go around and around, but she didn’t move. She felt like everyone was looking at her.
②“Go, Millie, go!”
Millie’s face turned red. At last, she gave it a try, but she failed.③
The truth was that Millie practised jumping rope at home every day. With a short rope, she could jump 100 times without missing. She just didn’t know how to run in and start jumping with a long rope. Since she was the only kid on her street, there was no one to help turn the long rope. Just then, Mrs. Miles, the gym teacher brought out a bunch (堆) of short jump ropes.④
“Let’s see how long each one of you can jump without missing.” she said as she gave each student a short rope. “Ready, set. Go!”
Millie smiled for the first time ever in a gym class. As she jumped, she sang rhymes quickly to herself.
After a while, Millie realized that everyone was cheering. “Go, Millie, go!” She was the only one still jumping rope! The surprise almost made her miss a step, but she kept going. When at last she was too tired to go on, she stopped. The whole class cheered. Everyone was looking at her and smiling. Millie smiled back!
Dear children, after reading the story, do you know what to do when facing difficulty? Be confident, maybe you are the best one!

As a child, I spent each Thanksgiving with my large family at my grandparents’ house in Maryland, US. It’s a wooden cabin (小屋) on the side of a hill, deep in the forest, above a small, grassy field. 66
Our first greeting was the excited barking of Grandma’s dog, Jesse. He met us at our car and jumped up at us as we carried our bags into the house.
67 Aunt Sue touched my face and told me how big I’d gotten. Grandpa gave me a strong handshake and shouted, “What do you say, Cal?!”, which is old man’s English for “Hello, Calvin!”
The next day, by the time I woke up, Grandma and Mom had already begun cooking. 68 The cabin was small, so we had to creatively move the furniture (家具) to make room for everyone to sit at the long table together.
Dinner was finally served at about 4 p.m. Before we ate, Grandma asked each person to say at least one thing that he or she was thankful for. I said, “I’m thankful for my parents, my grandma and the turkey!” 69 Once everyone was finished speaking, we dug in. It was all delicious food. Even better were the homemade apple and pumpkin pies.
70 Under the late-autumn stars, we made a campfire in the field and told stories. I looked back up the hill at the cabin in the moonlight, and one word appeared in my mind: “Thanks”.
