The Mini Problem
Lily’s disappointment was surely clear. She woke up on Christmas morning and, along with her brother, ran down to see the gifts under the tree.
In the living room sat a nice mini bike. It was red with a white gas tank. For a short moment, Lily was filled with great excitement. She couldn’t imagine anything better than getting that bike. Then, her eyes caught sight of a baby doll sitting on the sofa with a huge bow.
She knew. She knew that the mini bike belonged (属于) to her brother and that doll would be her Christmas gift. It was always like this. Tommy always got cool things: skateboards, gliders, science kits. The mini bike was just the latest cool thing. Lily always got the boring gifts: a set of toy cooking kits, a pink tutu with silver twinkling stars, a pair of fairy lady’s feather wings. They are amazing for other girls, but she didn’t like them at all. To Lily, this doll seemed unusually boring again. The doll had big eyes with super long eyelashes and straight blond hair. She even wore a petticoat (衬裙).
Tommy had seen that mini-bike in the front window of Moore’s Bike Shop, but hadn’t Lily too? Tommy had asked for the bike and had said it was the only thing he wanted for Christmas. Although Lily had the same thought, the words were on the tip of her tongue, finally she failed to say them, again. She was a shy girl, even in front of her family.
Tommy’s eyes grew wide at the sight of the bike. He knew it was his — no doll for him. He ran into his parents’ room and jumped excitedly on the bed.
“Thank you, Mama! Thank you, Papa!” he yelled.
At the same time, Lily walked into the other room silently. She was disappointed and a bit angry. It took a while for anyone to realize she was missing.
“What’s wrong, Lily?” Papa asked gently. “Did you see your pretty doll?” “I saw it,” she said unhappily.
“What’s wrong, honey? You can’t imagine how long your father waited in line to buy that doll! It was nearly 30 minutes. The shop was always full of people.” Mama said.
Silence. Lily’s jaw (下巴) was fixed. Her face was pale. Her hands clenched (紧握).“Oh, Mama, you know Lily is never excited by presents!” her brother laughed. “Come out and watch me ride!”
And so they did.
However, Lily made a decision after a while. She wouldn’t keep silent any more and she needed to speak out what she really thought. Then, she made a deep breath, walked straight to her parents’ room.
24.What was Lily’s Christmas gift?
A.A mini bike. B.A huge bow. C.A baby doll. D.A gas tank.
25.Lily walked into the other room silently because ________.
A.she was disappointed and a bit angry B.she asked for the bike but didn’t get it

26.What can we learn from this story?

C.Cool things are perfect Christmas gifts. D.Communication is the key to understanding.

Recently, some people have complained about the purposefully addictive (上瘾的) designs of smartphones and social media, which make it hard for anyone to put them down, especially teens. Now, a new report in Emotion gives facts that back up what these people said.
According to the report, young people’s life satisfaction and happiness have dropped since 2012, the year the percentage of teens owning smartphones started increasing rapidly. The report also finds that teens’ psychological (心理的) health gets worse the more hours a week they spend on screens.
Jean Twenge is the lead writer of the report. She graphed (制图) the connection between happiness and screen activities, such as social media, texting, gaming, and video chats. She also graphed the connection between happiness and non-screen activities, including sports, reading, and face-to-face communications. She called the relationship between screen and non-screen activities “zero sum”—if you are doing one, it takes time away from the others.
Diane Tanman complains that her sons are like that. They are 11 and 15. They used to play games in fields, and it made them happier. These days, her sons are more into online games. Many of the games have rewards (奖励) built in to keep players coming back. “It’s just junk food for the brain,” Tanman said.
Ed Lazzara says his 12-year-old son Leo is a fan of video games. After playing a lot, Leo gets more upset and uncomfortable. He wants his son to play fewer video games.
However, totally staying away from electronic devices (设备) doesn’t lead to happiness, either. Twenge and her co-writers found that the happiest teens used electronic devices a little less than an hour daily. After a daily hour of screen time, unhappiness rises in relation to increasing screen time.
Spending time in front of a screen is a normal part of being a teenager. Many schools require students to be online and to use iPads or other devices to do their work. But teachers and parents have also complained that technology can get in the way of learning when teens use their devices for things other than their studies.
If we recognize how screen time influences young minds, we can help teens use technology better and protect their psychological health in the process. Screen time is like ice cream. Sure, we can have some once in a while, but it shouldn’t be part of our everyday lives.
27.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Screen time at home is not as beneficial as screen time at school.
B.Nearly an hour of screen time every day makes teens happiest.
C.Technology should be encouraged in classroom learning.
D.What teens do on the screen influences their happiness.
28.Why does the passage give the examples of families with teens?
A.To prove the bad effect of the addictive designs of electronic devices.
B.To show parents have little control over their teens’ screen time.
C.To compare different-aged teens’ feelings about screen use.
D.To explain why electronic devices make teens feel happy.
29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Use of Electronic Devices: Should We Consider Teens’ Needs?

C.Screen Time and Teens’ Study Performance
D.Screen Time and Teens’ Life Satisfaction

We all love to criticize (批评). Unfortunately, we also hate being criticized. Criticism is the action of expressing disapproval of someone or something. It can trouble us in our everyday life.
Criticism is hard to accept because of how our brains process it. In 2013, a group of neuroscientists (神经科学家) found that criticism affected the parts of our brains that deal with understanding other people more than the parts that help us think logically (合乎逻辑地). This means that when we get criticized, we often focus on the critic’s (批评者) feelings and thoughts instead of the actual feedback (反馈). For example, if someone says your work isn’t good enough, your first thought is “He or she doesn’t like me.” instead of “How can I improve?”.
If you find it hard to deal with criticism, then you are not alone. When Isaac Newton published a paper on light in 1672, many scientists disagreed with his ideas, including Robert Hooke. Newton was so angry that he ruined every picture of Hooke he could find. Clearly, reacting badly to criticism is more of a shame than the criticism itself. Since the culture of criticism is not going away, the only way out is to develop new ways to receive and give feedback.
Don’t make it personal.
When we get criticism, we often make it personal. First, we naturally focus on the person who gives criticism instead of criticism itself. Second, we may consider criticism an attack on our inner abilities, rather than our performance, which leads to lower self-worth. The solution is to build confidence by saying, “The criticism isn’t a personal attack on me; it’s about the matter itself.”
Treat criticism like inside information.
Once you stop taking criticism personally, you can see what it really is—a chance to know how others view your work and an opportunity to use it in a positive way to make progress. You can ask friends whom you trust to criticize your performance. If you ask them to do so, it won’t hurt much.
Make criticism a gift, never a weapon (武器).
We all need to give criticism sometimes. The key to criticizing to the best effect is to remember the“gift or weapon” rule: If you criticize to help others improve, you are doing it right. If you’re trying to hurt others, you’re doing it wrong.
Praise in public, criticize in private.
Studies show that positive feedback given to students in public is more encouraging than that in private, and negative feedback in private is more effective than that in public.
Criticism is a natural part of life. Mastering the art of giving and receiving criticism is significant for personal development. Offer feedback with the purpose of improving, and receive it with the grace to learn and grow.
30.Why does the writer mention Isaac Newton in the 3rd paragraph?
A.To show it’s common to have trouble accepting criticism.
B.To stress the importance of taking criticism in a positive way.
C.To give an example of how criticism affected a famous person.
D.To present historical background to the discussion of criticism.
31.Which of the following actions is the most suitable when giving or receiving criticism?
A.I got a C in painting. I thought that it must be because I don’t have a talent for it.
B.Tom’s father criticized him for his mistake in front of his friends.
C.My brother ruined my book, so I criticized him to make him feel bad.
D.My teacher criticized my handwriting, but I’ll make it better next time.
32.From Paragraph 4, we can learn that ________.
A.criticism is always directed at our personal abilities
B.focusing on the criticism itself can help build confidence
C.criticism is only given by people with a bad purpose
D.paying no attention to criticism is the best way to keep self-worth high
33.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To explain the scientific reasons behind criticism.
B.To show the effects of criticism on our mental health.
C.To teach people how to understand criticism reasonably.
D.To advise people to act properly when it comes to criticism.
【答案】30.A 31.D 32.B 33.D
【导语】本文主要阐述了人们面对批评时的普遍反应,以及如何正确对待批评,包括接受批评和给予批评的正确方式。
30.推理判断题。根据“If you find it hard to deal with criticism, then you are not alone. When Isaac Newton published a paper on light in 1672, many scientists disagreed with his ideas, including Robert Hooke. Newton was so angry that he ruined every picture of Hooke he could find.”可知,作者提到牛顿在面对他人对自己观点的批评时反应很糟糕,是为了说明很多人在面对批评时都会有难以接受的情况,即难以处理批评是很常见的。故选A。
31.推理判断题。根据文中所给的正确对待批评的方式:“Don’t make it personal.”不把批评个人化、“ Treat criticism like inside information.”把批评当作内部信息、“Make criticism a gift, never a weapon”把批评当作礼物而非武器、“Praise in public, criticize in private.”公开表扬私下批评等。可知,选项D“我的老师批评了我的书法,但我下次会把它写得更好”,体现了接受批评并积极改进的态度,符合正确对待批评的方式。故选D。
32.推理判断题。根据第四段“When we get criticism, …“The criticism isn’t a personal attack on me; it’s about the matter itself.”

The Secret to Learning Languages
A lot of people think that they are not good at learning a new language. However, experts say that we can all learn from the behavior (行为) of good language learners to become better at languages.
Good language learners look for chances to hear and use the new language outside of the classroom, as a result, they learn the language more quickly. If they’re studying in a country where the language is spoken, this is easy to do. For example, they can talk to salesmen, join sports clubs, or even talk to people in coffee stores. However, if they are studying in a country where the language is not spoken, there are still ways to practice outside of class. They might read newspapers and magazines in that language, watch movies, listen to the news, or join chat rooms. All of these are great chances to practice and can also be fun.
What’s more, good language learners try different ways to make their message understood. For example, if they do not know the word for “laundromat”, they might say “the place where you can wash clothes”. If that does not work, they might even try drawing a laundromat with washers and dryers, or acting. The point is that good language learners are creative and do not easily give up. Because of these qualities (品质), they can learn more and better.
Finally, good language learners are prepared to take risks. They think that making mistakes is natural and is necessary to learn. As a result, instead of being uneasy by a mistake or getting upset when they do not understand, they see it as earning a learning chance. For example, if they do not understand what someone said the first time, they are not afraid to ask them to repeat it again and again until they do understand. Or, if someone corrects their vocabulary or grammar, they try to remember instead of becoming shy about speaking.
Learning a language well takes time. However, looking for chances to practice the language, trying different ways to communicate, taking risks, and being prepared to make mistakes will help you become a skilled and confident language learner in the long run.
34.How can you become better at languages according to the experts?
35.Why do good language learners learn a language more quickly?
36.What do good language learners do if they don’t understand what someone said the first time?
37.Which behavior of good language learners do you agree most? Why?
【答案】34.We can all learn from the behavior of good language learners. 35.Because they look for chances to hear and use the new language outside of the classroom. 36.They are not afraid to ask them to repeat it again and again until they do understand. 37.I agree that making mistakes is natural and is necessary to learn.

B.Teens’ Psychological Health: Why Is It Important?
C.Screen Time and Teens’ Study Performance
D.Screen Time and Teens’ Life Satisfaction
D

四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分)
Why?
