What is a new skill? There are lots of things you can try. For small kids, you can try learning a musical instrument, playing a sport, or learning arts. For teenagers, a new skill doesn’t have to be a hobby, though, it can also be something called a life skill. It can be something like learning to cook and laying the table. How do I start a new skill? Different people have different ways to learn a new skill. Let’s listen to what they say! Learn from Books and Online lessons Think about what you enjoy doing or what you’d like to try. Why not get a book from the library about your chosen skill or even look online, for tips on how to master something new? These days, I’m having fun learning how to draw comics. It’s so interesting! ——Ruby Join Local Classes You have good choices for learning new things near you. Recently, I joined a dance class in my neighborhood, where I learned some basic dance moves. I also met a group of friendly people and made friends there! More importantly, I’m more confident than before! ——Julie Find a teacher to guide you The best way to learn a new skill is to find a teacher. My neighbor, Ms. Clark, has a beautiful garden full of vegetables and flowers. Every weekend, she shows me things like how to prepare soil, plant seeds properly. Ms. Clark says if I keep practicing, I might even be able to grow tomatoes by summer. ——Thomas 16. According to the text, what can teenagers learn as a life skill? A. To play the guitar. B. To cook a meal. C. To draw a picture. D. To do some sports. 17. How does Julie start learning a new skill? A. By reading books at home. B. By having online lessons. C. By asking a neighbor for help. D. By taking part in a local class. 18. In which part of the magazine can we read the text? A. Life Guide. B. Sports News. C. Art and Music. D. Story Time. B It was winter in the Cascade Mountains. Most 16-year-olds were preparing for a high school dance, but Rachael had a different plan. She was leading her dog team through a challenging dog-sled (狗拉雪橇) race. Dog sled racing is difficult for any 16-year-old—especially for Rachael, who was blind. Why was dog sledding so much fun for the girl? “I’ve always loved running with dogs!” Rachael explained, “After finishing almost every race, I feel pretty good about myself!” The first day’s race started. “Three, two, one, go!” shouted the race official, and Rachael set off. The dogs were tied together with special ropes. During the race, these ropes became mixed up. She had to stop and follow the ropes with hands. This time, her hands weren’t enough, so Rachael got her helper, Matt, to help her. After Matt moved the dogs into position, she could continue the race. But unluckily, she was the last to cross the finish line. The next morning, it was snowing. Just before she started, Rachael, still thinking about yesterday’s surprising trouble, bent (弯腰) down and encouraged each member of her dog team. Then, the race started. There were many difficult turns in the course (赛道). Matt had to use his radio to warn Rachael about them several times during the day. Luckily, after this day’s race, she had moved ahead in the competition! Finally, it was the last day. It was a clear day in the beautiful Cascade Mountains. Rachael couldn’t see the wonderful scenery, but she could hear the excited barking of her dogs. At last, she completed the race as the 23rd racer. As she passed the finish line, everybody cheered. Although she didn’t win the race itself, she successfully completed three days of hard racing. She made it across 300 difficult miles guided by her love of racing. In many people’s opinions, this was what made Rachael a real winner! 19. What made it more difficult for Rachael to take part in the race? A. She had trouble walking. B. She couldn’t see well. C. She had hearing difficulties. D. She had no helpers. 20. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. The turns. B. The dogs. C. The ropes. D. The competitors. 21. Which is the correct time order of the following events? a. Rachael finished the race in 23rd place. b. Matt helped Rachael move the dogs into position. c. Rachael bent down and encouraged her dog team. d. Rachael was the last to cross the finish line. A. c-d-b-a B. a-c-d-b C. b-c-d-a D. b-d-c-a 22. What can be the best title for the story? A. Ways to Train Sled Dogs B. An Amazing Winter Sport C. A Real Winner in the Snow D. A Dog Race in the Mountains C Social media, like Douyin, is full of different videos of dogs seeming to react (回应) to their favorite words, like “walk”, “ball” or “park”, but do the pets truly know what is being said? A new study by scientists in Hungary has found that dogs may actually understand words more than was previously (先前) thought. The research team tested 27 pet dogs who knew at least three words for different objects, according to their owners. The scientists played a recording of the owner calling out the name of an object, such as a ball, or a toy. Then the owner held up either the matching thing or an object that did not match the name. Meanwhile, the scientists recorded electrical activity in the dogs’ brains. When the objects and words did not match, the dogs acted the most excitedly. The scientists noticed a sudden increase in their brain activity. They believed the dogs could picture the correct thing in their minds and react when the wrong thing appeared. While dogs may not use languages the same way humans do, the study shows that dogs have the ability to connect words with objects. This discovery is really exciting. It helps us understand our furry friends better. For example, if you want to train your dog, you can use clear words. Dogs can learn new words just like how we learn new things in school. Also, this study shows that dogs are smarter than we might think. They don’t just reply to our voices; they truly understand some of the words we say. Maybe next time when you tell your dog “dinner time”, it knows exactly what’s coming! 23. How does the writer start the topic? A. By comparing facts. B. By telling a story. C. By asking a question. D. By listing numbers. 24. What did the scientists do during the study according to the text? A. They showed dogs pictures of their favorite objects. B. They played the recording of the owners’ voices. C. They asked the dogs to find their toys far away. D. They held up some of the matching things or objects. 25. Which picture shows the dogs’ brain activity when the objects and words didn’t match? A. B. C. D. 26. What’s the main purpose of the text? A. To express the strong love for the dogs. B. To share one of the dogs’ favorite toys. C. To tell us the importance of training dogs. D. To introduce a study about dogs’ ability. D The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is doing something really cool. They are testing tiny cameras that patients can actually swallow (吞) to get checked for cancer (癌症). Cancer is a terrible disease. The earlier cancer is found the easier it is to treat. So, the NHS invites people who might be at risk of certain cancers to have a check once or twice a year. Usually, people need to go to the hospital for the checks. These special cameras are called PillCams. Why? Because they are put in a small capsule (胶囊) that’s easy to swallow, just like taking a kind of medicine. The capsule also has a tiny light. As it travels through the body, it takes pictures of the patient’s bowel (肠). The pictures are sent to a small device (装置) in a bag that the patient wears. After the camera finishes its job, the patient returns the bag to the hospital. Then, doctors can look at the photos carefully to see if there are any problems. The whole process takes 5 to 8 hours, and during this time, the patient can still go about their normal day, doing things like going to work or doing simple housework. This amazing technology has already been tried in Scotland. Now, it’s being tested on 11,000 patients all over the UK, including England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Sir Simon Stevens, who is in charge of the NHS in England, said, “What seemed like something from a science fiction movie is now becoming real. These small cameras take two pictures every second as they move through your body, looking for signs of cancer and other health problems.” It’s so exciting to think about how this new technology can help more people stay healthy! 27. What cool thing is the National Health Service doing? A. They are searching a new kind of medicine. B. They are describing the risk of many diseases. C. They are testing special cameras to check cancer. D. They are asking people to buy some special cameras. 28. How does PillCams send pictures to the doctors according to the text? A. Patients themselves take the capsule back to the hospital. B. Patients return the special bag with pictures to the hospital. C. Doctors come to the patient’s home to get the pictures. D. The pictures are sent directly to the hospital’s computer. 29. In which part of the UK has the PillCam technology been tested first? A. In England. B. In Wales. C. In Scotland. D. In Northern Ireland. 30. What can we learn from the text? A. The PillCam technology can help more people keep healthy. B. The PillCam technology is from a science fiction movie. C. The PillCam technology can control all kinds of diseases. D. The PillCam technology can make the cameras work fast. 第二节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下面材料,从下面所给出的A—E五个选项中选出正确选项(其中一项是多余选项),将其序号填入前四小题,并回答最后一题。 Reading opens doors to new worlds, develops your imagination, and even helps you do better in school. What is a new skill? There are lots of things you can try. For small kids, you can try learning a musical instrument, playing a sport, or learning arts. For teenagers, a new skill doesn’t have to be a hobby, though, it can also be something called a life skill. It can be something like learning to cook and laying the table. A Dog Race in the Mountains 【答案】19. B 20. A 21. D 22. C 【解析】 【导语】本文讲述了16岁盲人女孩Rachael克服困难参加狗拉雪橇比赛并坚持完成的故事。 【19题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Dog sled racing is difficult for any 16-year-old—especially for Rachael, who was blind.”可知,Rachael的视力障碍使她参赛更加困难。故选B。 【20题详解】 词义猜测题。根据“There were many difficult turns in the course (赛道). Matt had to use his radio to warn Rachael about them several times during the day.”可知,赛道上有很多困难的转弯。Matt不得不多次用无线电警告Rachael关于这些转弯。them指代前文的“转弯”。故选A。 【21题详解】 细节理解题。根据“After Matt moved the dogs into position, she could continue the race.”可知,先是Matt帮Rachael调整狗的位置,根据“But unluckily, she was the last to cross the finish line.”可知,然后是Rachael最后一名完成首日比赛;根据“Just before she started, Rachael, still thinking about yesterday’s surprising trouble, bent (弯腰) down and encouraged each member of her dog team.”可知,接下来是次日比赛前Rachael弯腰,鼓励狗队;根据“At last, she completed the race as the 23rd racer.” C。 C Social media, like Douyin, is full of different videos of dogs seeming to react (回应) to their favorite words, like “walk”, “ball” or “park”, but do the pets truly know what is being said? 【答案】23. C 24. B 25. A 26. D 【解析】 【导语】本文主要介绍一项关于狗能理解词汇的能力的研究及其发现。 【23题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“but do the pets truly know what is being said?”可知,文章开头先讲社交媒体上的狗反应视频,然后紧接着提出“but do the pets truly know what is being said?”,用疑问句引出文章话题。故选C。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“The scientists played a recording of the owner calling out the name of an object, such as a ball, or a toy. Then the owner held up either the matching thing or an object that did not match the name. Meanwhile, the scientists recorded electrical activity in the dogs’ brains.”可知,科学家在研究中主要做的是播放主人声音的录音来观察狗的反应。故选B。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“When the objects and words did not match, the dogs acted the most excitedly. The scientists noticed a sudden increase in their brain activity.”可知,当词和物体不匹配时,狗表现出最兴奋,此时狗的大脑活动突然增加。即脑波明显上升。故选A。 【26题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要介绍一项关于狗能理解词汇的能力的研究及其发现。故选D。 D The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is doing something really cool. They are testing tiny cameras that patients can actually swallow (吞) to get checked for cancer (癌症). Cancer is a terrible disease. The earlier cancer is found, the easier it is to treat. 27. C.
