After writing 50 books, Pakistani American kids’ book author Saadia Faruqi is covering an issue she’s never explored before in her newest title, The Strongest Heart.
“This is the first time I’ve written a book that mainly talks about mental illness and the impacts it has on family life, especially on kids,” says Faruqi. “It’s a topic that’s very close to my heart and the theme is personal to me.”
Published in March, The Strongest Heart follows Mo, a Pakistani American eighth grader, as he struggles to understand his Abbu — “father” in Urdu — who has a very serious mental illness. The book is based on Faruqi’s own rocky relationship with her father, who she believes also had this condition.
Growing up in Karachi, Pakistan, Faruqi says she was afraid of her father’s episodes and often felt confused. The adults never “sat me down and explained anything. Nobody said,’ Hey, don’ t be scared.’” She hopes The Strongest Heart, intended for middle schoolers, can offer comfort and strength to young people who live with someone with mental illness at home.
When asked about what she hoped readers would take away from this book, Faruqi said,“I think the title says it all: The Strongest Heart. When things get really bad, somebody tellsMo, ‘The strongest heart is the one that’ s still beating.’ I hope that readers take away a message of courage and resilience (坚持不懈). This book is for anybody who faces hardships, who’s not in control of their own life, who’s scared or worried or anxious.”
So far, the book has earned four starred reviews. Kirkus Reviews writes: “The story is engaging, populated with appealing, well-rounded main and supporting characters. The account of serious mental illness and the complex emotions of a child whose parent suffers from it are realistic, eye-opening and moving.”
4. What makes The Strongest Heart different from Faruqi’s previous books?
A. It covers family issues in Pakistan.
B. It talks about her personal life in Urdu.
C. It describes her childhood life in Karachi.
D. It addresses mental illness’s family impact.
5. How might Mo feel about his father’s illness?
A. Puzzled and scared.
B. Angry and doubtful.
C. Worried and impatient.
D. Anxious and ashamed.
6. What does Faruqi hope readers learn from The Strongest Heart?
A. There is strength even in a struggle.
B. Parents must always appear strong.
C. Mental illness should be kept private.
D. People should take control of their own life.
7. What comment did The Strongest Heart receive?
A. Appreciation for its delicate structure.
B. Disapproval of its characterization.
C. Criticism for its complex account.
D. Praise for its emotional realism.

Every day, you likely hear a new piece of advice. One suggestion you may hear is to “fake it until you make it”, especially if you’re starting something new, like a job. But is it really good advice?
Fake it till you make it is an expression in which a person imitates (模仿) the confidence or skills they need to succeed in what they are doing in the hope that they will eventually feel real. Advocates of this idea say you can fake confidence and hope that, eventually, it will inspire real confidence.
The best time to use this strategy may be when you’re trying to change your behavior to improve yourself. If you aim to boost your work productivity, you might draw inspiration from your more efficient colleagues. This way can help you learn strategies to enhance your performance. Similarly, in your personal life, striving to be more friendly and warm can initially feel awkward but will ultimately foster better relationships with those around you.
Unfortunately, faking it till you make it doesn’t always bring sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows. It may not work when dealing with hard skills, assisting others, or faking who you are. For example, it is incredibly hard to fake technical skills and competence like software experience. It’s also hard to assist others if you lack understanding of the subject. Moreover, pretending to be someone you’re not or making false claims can be exposed.
One study shows that it can snowball into imposter syndrome, which can arise when individuals feel their success is undeserved and fear being exposed as a fake. Unfortunately, faking it till you make it can exacerbate that syndrome, leading to avoidance and negative impacts on productivity and well-being.
In conclusion, there is a difference between learning new behaviors and lying about your identity or skills. One can build you into a better worker or friend, but the latter can get you into trouble. “Fake it till you make it” can be a useful approach for some, while it can also contribute to imposter syndrome for others.
8. Why do some people adopt the strategy “fake it till you make it”?
A. To criticize the behavior of others.
B. To make others trust their abilities.
C. To avoid taking on new challenges.
D. To gain confidence through imitation.
9. In what type of situation might “fake it till you make it” be ineffective?
A. When taking up a new hobby.
B. When trying to stay focused in class.
C. When teaching others computer skills.
D. When socializing with your classmates.
10. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Worsen. B. Relieve.
C. Prevent. D. Recognize.
11. What is the author’s main viewpoint on the strategy “fake it till you make it”?
A It can be positive or negative.
B. It is a useful tool in our daily life.
C. It is more harmful in the long run.
D. It’s always good for personal growth.

After spending many years studying the effects of lightning on rainforests, Evan Gora, a forest ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, began wondering whether trees could not only survive this usually deadly event but also actually get some kind of advantage from it.
To find out, he and his colleagues spent several years following the cases of 93 trees from various species in the rainforest of central Panama when they were directly struck by lightning. Nine were from a species known as the almendro, a forest giant native to Central and South America that can grow up to 165 feet tall. After the trees were struck, the researchers continued to monitor the ones that survived the shock, checking their overall condition and noting whether the lightning killed neighboring trees and any parasitic vines (寄生藤蔓) growing on them.
The results showed that the almendro trees were very resistant to lightning and minimally damaged compared with almost all the other tree species, which were severely damaged — 64 percent of the latter trees died within two years of being struck. A few other large species also survived the strikes and might have benefited as well, but lightning had not struck enough of these species for the researchers to be certain.
Many of the trees that had surrounded the almendros — competing with the species for water and nutrients — were killed by lightning that spread through their branches after it hit the almendro trees. This left more resources and space for the latter. Lightning strikes on the almendros also reduced the average number of parasitic vines on a tree by 78 percent, by killing them. These vines climb on top of the trees to “steal” light.
Equipped with data on lightning strike frequency and the trees’ survival rates after reaching a certain size, the team used computer models to estimate that a typical almendro is likely struck by lightning about five times during its 300-year lifespan. The researchers found that lightning strikes seem to be almost a necessity for the trees. Without the benefits the strikes bring, “they would not live as long,” Gora says.
12. How did the researchers study the effects of lightning on rainforest trees mainly?
A. By measuring vine growth rates.
B. By tracking struck trees for years.
C. By comparing multiple tree species.
D. By counting annual lightning strikes.
13. Why did the researchers focus on almendro trees in the study?
A. They grow tallest.
B. They attract most vines.
C. They resist lightning best.
D. They are widely distributed.
14. How do lightning strikes help almendro trees live longer?
A. By providing sufficient light.
B. By removing competing plants.
C. By strengthening tree branches.
D. By increasing nutrient absorption.
15. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Lightning's Role in Rainforest Ecology
B. The Survival of Struck Rainforest Trees
C. Why Some Trees Love Lightning Strike
D. Why Some Trees Resistant to Lightning Strike

How to Become a More Effective Listener
Being a good listener can enrich your understanding, expand your capacity for empathy, and improve your communication skills. ___16___ Here are some practical strategies to improve your listening skills.
Maintain appropriate eye contact.
When someone is talking to you, make and hold eye contact so they know you’ re taking in what they’ re saying. ___17___ Studies show the ideal amount of eye contact is about 3 seconds at a time; longer periods of direct eye contact may make the other person uncomfortable.
Minimize distractions.
Active listening requires full focus. If you’ re watching TV or scrolling TikTok while someone is speaking, they’ll likely get the impression that you’ re not really paying attention — and you’ll miss key details. ___18___ This demonstrates respect and engagement.
___19___
You might be a great listener, but your conversation partner may not realize it if you don’t show them. Nodding now and again and offering an “mmhmm” or “I see” can help them know that you care. And the occasional verbal acknowledgement that you’ re listening and comprehending can encourage the other person to keep talking.
Ask insightful questions.
Meaningful questions deepen conversations and show genuine interest. ___20___ This encourages the speaker to reflect and elaborate, making the discussion more productive. That’s why we should aim to use questions as a means by which the speaker can begin to reach their own conclusions about the issues being raised, without sounding judgmental or forceful.
A. Read their body language.
B. Provide proper feedback.
C. Put aside any distractions and maintain focus.
D. However, avoid staring at them the whole time.

Gina walked her way towards the school building. Her stomach fluttered (照动) with butterflies. It was not just any day. It was her first day in a new school in a new town, and the sense of starting over was enormous. She looked back to wave goodbye to her parents, who responded with thumbs-up and encouraging smiles. If they only knew how nervous she was.
Back in her old school, Gina had a solid circle of friends who had been with her since kindergarten. They had experienced countless adventures together, shared secrets, and supported each other through every challenge. Even when Gina got braces (牙套), her friends never made her feel embarrassed about it. However, all those comforting memories were now part of a closed chapter. As Gina stood before the impressive doors of her new school, she realized she was on the edge of a new chapter in her life.
Inside, the students in Gina’s class seemed welcoming and friendly. They smiled and offered greetings, making an effort to include her. Despite their kindness, Gina found herself smiling less and less due to her lack of confidence in her appearance. She was constantly worried that she couldn’t fit into the new group.
Now it was the gym class. The coach announced they would be playing volleyball.
“Gina,” the coach called out, “you’re playing libero (自由人) today, okay? The libero in volleyball is a player who specializes in defense and moves around the court quickly and freely to pass the ball.
“Sure thing!” Gina replied. She put on her sports shirt and took her position, focusing on the area near the back of the court. She scanned the court and looked over to the position where her teammate was preparing to serve (发球).

D 5. A 6. A 7. D

C
A. It can be positive or negative.
B. It is a useful tool in our daily life.
C. It is more harmful in the long run.
D. It’s always good for personal growth.
D 9. C 10. A 11. A

根据第二段中的“Fake it till you make it is an expression in which a person imitates the confidence or skills they need to succeed in what they are doing in the hope that they will eventually feel real. Advocates of this idea say you can fake confidence and hope that, eventually, it will inspire real confidence. (“假装成功直到真的成功”是指一个人模仿成功所需的自信或技能,希望最终能拥有真实的自信。这一理念的拥护者认为,人们可以通过假装自信,最终激发真正的自信)”可知,有些人采用这一策略是为了通过模仿获得自信。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“It may not work when dealing with hard skills, assisting others, or faking who you are. For example, it is incredibly hard to fake technical skills and competence like software experience. It's also hard to assist others if you lack understanding of the subject. (在处理硬技能、帮助他人或伪装自我时,这一策略可能行不通。例如,很难伪造软件经验等技术技能和能力。如果你对某一主题缺乏了解,也很难帮助他人)”可知,在教授他人计算机技能,如硬技能时,该策略可能无效。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“One study shows that it can snowball into imposter syndrome, which can arise when individuals feel their success is undeserved and fear being exposed as a fake. Unfortunately, faking it till you make it can exacerbate that syndrome, leading to avoidance and negative impacts on productivity and well-being.(一项研究表明,这种情况可能会像滚雪球一样发展成冒名顶替综合征。 故选A项
根据最后一段中的““Fake it till you make it”can be a useful approach for some, while it can also contribute to imposter syndrome for others.”(“假装成功直到真的成功”对某些人来说是有用的方法,而对另一些人来说则可能引发冒名顶替综合征)可知,作者认为这一策略既有积极一面,也有消极影响,持客观辩证的态度。故选A项。
D
D By counting annual lightning strikes.
13. Why did the researchers focus on almendro trees in the study?
A. They grow tallest.
B. They attract most vines.
C. They resist lightning best.
D. They are widely distributed.
14. How do lightning strikes help almendro trees live longer?
A. By providing sufficient light.
B. By removing competing plants.
C. By strengthening tree branches.
D. By increasing nutrient absorption.
15. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Lightning's Role in Rainforest Ecology
B. The Survival of Struck Rainforest Trees
C. Why Some Trees Love Lightning Strike
D. Why Some Trees Resistant to Lightning Strike
B 13. C 14. B 15. C

根据第二段“To find out, he and his colleagues spent several years following the cases of 93 trees from various species in the rainforest of central Panama when they were directly struck by lightning. Nine were from a species known as the almendro, a forest giant native to Central and South America that can grow up to 165 feet tall. After the trees were struck, the researchers continued to monitor the ones that survived the shock, checking their overall condition and noting whether the lightning killed neighboring trees and any parasitic vines (寄生藤蔓) growing on them.(为了找到答案,他和他的同事花了几年时间追踪巴拿马中部雨林中93棵不同物种的树木被闪电直接击中的情况。
根据第三段“The results showed that the almendro trees were very resistant to lightning and minimally damaged compared with almost all the other tree species, which were severely damaged — 64 percent of the latter trees died within two years of being struck. (结果表明,与几乎所有其他严重受损的树种相比,榄仁树对闪电的抵抗力很强,受损程度很小——其他树种中有64%的树木在遭受雷击后两年内死亡。)”可知,榄仁树对闪电的抵抗力很强,与其他树种相比受损最小,而其他树种大多严重受损甚至死亡。因此,研究人员重点关注 榄仁树是因为它们对闪电的抵抗力最强。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Many of the trees that had surrounded the almendros — competing with the species for water and nutrients — were killed by lightning that spread through their branches after it hit the almendro trees. This left more resources and space for the latter. Lightning strikes on the almendros also reduced the average number of parasitic vines on a tree by 78 percent, by killing them. These vines climb on top of the trees to “steal” light.(许多包围着棕榈树的树木——与该物种争夺水和营养——在击中棕榈树后,被闪电击中树枝而死亡。这为后者留下了更多的资源和空间。对榄仁树的雷击也使树上寄生藤蔓的平均数量减少了78%,杀死了它们。这些藤蔓爬到树顶上“偷”光。)”可知,闪电会杀死 榄仁树周围的竞争树种和寄生藤蔓,从而减少资源竞争,为榄仁树提供更多生存空间和养分。因此,闪电通过清除榄仁树的竞争植物帮助其延长寿命。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第五段“Without the benefits the strikes bring, “they would not live as long,” Gora says.(Gora说,如果没有闪电带来的好处,“它们不会活那么久”。)”

E. However, mastering this skill requires conscious effort.
F. For example, inquire about their perspective or feelings.
G. A good listener should always offer immediate advice.

Thank you for listening!
Dear schoolmates,
Last week, our class organized a meaningful activity “Cooking a Dish for My Parents”. The aim was to express gratitude to our parents and strengthen family bonds through hands-on effort.
I chose to make scrambled (炒的) eggs with tomatoes, a simple yet symbolic dish. After carefully washing and chopping the ingredients, I nervously heated the oil and stirred the eggs. Though I nearly burned them, my parents patiently guided me. Finally, the dish was served with their smiles as the best reward. This activity not only taught me to appreciate my parents' daily efforts, but made me realize the value of labor.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As the volleyball game began, Gina felt her anxiety increase. Each time the ball came her way, her hands trembled a bit and her heart raced-not just from the game, but also from the fear of being judged by her teammates. Despite her efforts to concentrate, her first few passes were unsteady and she could sense some teammates’ looks of concern. However, the coach, noticing her discomfort, walked over and offered a reassuring smile. “Gina, it’s how you play the next ball that counts. You’ve got this!” His words, simple yet sincere, struck a note in Gina. She felt her doubts about fitting in start to melt away.
The game continued, and with the coach’s encouragement ringing in her mind, Gina felt a newfound confidence. When the next serve came her way, she was ready. With a steady gaze and a determined leap, she perfectly received the ball, setting it up for a teammate’s successful hit. Her exploded in cheers, rushing to teammates congratulate her. Gina realized that her fears were unfounded, as her teammates valued her for her spirit and skill, not her appearance. The match ended with smiles and laughter, and Gina felt a genuine sense of belonging and joy among her new friends, truly part of the team now.
