It started innocently enough,as most things do.My son Nick had been eager to try rock climbing and he needed a
partner.As a 45-year-old mother,I am not a physical person at all.But I still decided to join him in a training class.The
first time I reached the top and returned safely to the ground,I was flooded with a mix of emotions. My body trembled
with adrenaline(肾上™素),as I had pushed myself harder than I ever thought possible, but I had accomplished it.
Four months into my climbing journey,I had an accident while bouldering().I'm not sure what exactly
happened, but I believe,my foot missed a hold on the way down.I didn't land properly and injured my lower back.I was
taken to the hospital by ambulance.I feared that I would never return to rock climbing or bouldering and said to Nick
sadly,"A piece of me would slip away.It would be forgotten and lie passive forever.I couldn't let that happen."
It took nearly three months before I felt strong enough to give it another try.Nick was supportive throughout the
process.I made it halfway up,but then panic set in.I felt like I had let myself and Nick down.He reassured me,telling
me not to worry,to take my time, and to try a different route when I was ready.Fifteen minutes later,I chose a different
path.I kept reminding myself that I could change my mind at any time.Along the way Nick guided and encouraged me.
To my surprise,I made it to the top and back to the ground safely.
Rock climbing was doing wonders for me.It has not only enhanced my physical and mental strength but also
implanted in me a newfound sense of confidence. Moreover,it serves as an excellent opportunity for Nick and me to
strengthen our bond, while encouraging me to explore more possibilities, embodying the spirit of pushing myself to the
limits.

While we aim to avoid any appearance of baseless theories,it is noteworthy to observe the longstanding practice of
putting magnets ()in cows,a phenomenon that has been carefully unfolding for years. Why are farmers putting
magnets in cows?
Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with "hardware disease".Hardware disease
occurs after an animal eats a metallic object that then makes a hole in the wall of the reticulum, the second stomach room
in ruminant animals ()This issue arises from the natural eating behaviors of these ruminants, similar to a
person at an unlimited food event-quickly and eagerly large bites without sufficient chewing. This fast-paced feeding
approach makes them tend to unintentionally consume metal pieces in their food, including broken farm machinery parts,
nails and wires used in fencing, for instance.
Metal objects entering the reticulum may result in infections, increased body temperatures, digestive problems, and
unease for the animals. To address hardware disease, the main strategy is to prevent metal from entering the cattle's diet.
Farmers have also adopted the method of placing cow magnets into the stomach using either a stomach tube or a balling
gun.The cow magnet attracts such objects and prevents them from becoming fixed in the animal's tissue. These magnets,
once positioned, remain within the animals throughout their lifespan, only being removed after the cows pass away or
when they are processed for meat.
Moseley,a Veterinary Medicine professor, states in a hardware disease resource,"The magnet gathers foreign
metallic objects, reducing the risk of making a hole in the reticulum."Research shows a mild magnetic field affects a
cow's small blood pathways, improving circulation and aiding recovery without significant impact on the cow or milk
quality.
28.Why are magnets fed to cows?
A.To change feeding habits.
B.To improve the milk quality

D.To enhance digestive system.
29.What is the main cause of hardware disease in ruminant animals?
A.Eating without chewing.
B.Taking magnets by mistake.
C.Sufficient chewing hard food.

A.To describe the historical practice of putting magnets in cows.
B.To deny the adoption of cow magnets to enhance cattle health.
C.To discuss the influence of a mild magnetic field on milk quality.
D.To explain the reason for using magnets to prevent hardware disease.
31.What might be a logical continuation of the passage?
A.Investigating the broader applications of magnets.
B.Exploring more potential benefits of cow magnets.
C.Discussing the alternative methods of caring for cows.
D.Explaining the long-term effects of magnets on animals.

If you want to tell the history of the whole world,a history that does not privilege one part of humanity, you cannot
do it through texts alone, because only some of the world has ever had texts, while most of the world, for most of the
time, has not.Writing is one of humanity's later achievements, and until fairly recently even many literate()
societies recorded their concems not only in writing but in things.
Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects, and some chapters of this book are able to do just that, but
in many cases we simply can't.The clearest example of this between literate and non-literate history is perhaps the first
conflict,at Botany Bay between Captain Cook's voyage and the Australian Aboriginals. From the English side,we have
scientific reports and the captain's record of that terrible day. From the Australian side,we have only a wooden shield
(dropped by a man in flight after his first experience of gunshot. If we want to reconstruct what was actually going
on that day,the shield must be questioned and interpreted as deeply and strictly as the written reports.
In addition to the problem of miscomprehension from both sides, there are victories accidentally or deliberately
twisted, especially when only the victors know how to write. Those who are on the losing side often have only their
things to tell their stories. The Caribbean Taino, the Australian Aboriginals, the African people of Benin and the Incas,
all of whom appear in this book, can speak to us now of their past achievements most powerfully through the objects
they made:a history told through things gives them back a voice. When we consider contact (between literate and
non-literate societies such as these, all our first-hand accounts are necessarily twisted, only one half of a dialogue. If we
are to find the other half of that conversation,we have to read not just the texts, but the objects.
32.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.Why written language is reliable.
B.What humanity is concerned about.
C.Whether facts speak louder than words.
D.How past events should be presented.
33.What does the author indicate by mentioning Captain Cook in paragraph 2?
A.His record was one-sided.
B.His report was scientific.
C.He ruled over Botany Bay.
D.He represented the local people
34.What does the underlined word"conversation"in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Problem.

The shape of Australia's school system is undergoing a significant change.Enrollments(A)in independent
schools are growing, while fewer students are going to public schools. Why are more families choosing an independent
school, when they could send their children to a free public option?36
One reason may be policy changes that allowed the establishment of new independent schools in Australia. In the
1990s,the Howard govemment changed a policy to allow funding for the establishment of new schools, even in areas
that already had adequate capacity in existing schools.
New independent schools tend to charge lower fees than established elite schools.37
According to
Independent Schools Australia, the largest growth in enrollments is in schools charging fees of around AS5,000 per year.
38 New South Wales Education Minister Prue Car has spoken about this issue for her own son,who attends
an independent primary school:"We were in one of the suburbs where the government didn't build a school."
Compared to other countries,Australian schools have a high level of“socioeconomic segregation(杜会经济隔
)".39 The increase in students going to fee-paying private schools means we are seeing increasing segregation
in our school system.
Public schools continue to educate the majority of children in remote locations.40 Independent schools
enroll increasing proportions of students from the most advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
A.What account for this shift?
B.How should we deal with this shift?
C.They are those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
6
D.That makes them more accessible to middle-income families
E.Parents will naturally choose what they perceive to be the best school.

第四部分写作(共1节,满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,(150词左右)
Mary was very happy when she got her dream part-time job at the local bookshop. It was right next to her school,so
she could walk there after classes. Her boss,Mr.Thompson, was very nice and trusted her with lots of important tasks
from the beginning.
One afternoon,Mr.Thompson gave Mary and her classmate Alex a special task.He wanted them to make a plan to
promote a new book series all written by teenagers."This series is unique because it reflects the voices of young authors,"
Mr.Thompson explained."I'm counting on (you two to come up with something that will truly connect with the
young readers. You'll have to finalize your plan before Friday since the school Reading Festival is just around the
corner."
Mary was very excited and happy to help. She nodded eagerly."Absolutely,Mr.Thompson!I can't wait to get
started."She was so thrilled that she couldn't stop smiling on her way home. Finally, there was a chance to show
everyone what she could do.
But working with Alex wasn't going to be easy.Alex was known for being bossy and having strong opinions. When
Mary met up with him at the library to discuss their project, she knew it would be tricky."I've worked on similar
projects before,,and simple booths(展位)in the school courtyard always work, and we could hand out flyers(传单),”
Alex said, without even looking at Mary.
Mary frowned (as she thought about Alex's idea. She knew that booths worked well, but she felt they
could do something more exciting to catch the attention of their classmates. The new book series deserved a special
promotion."If we just follow the same old methods, how will this book series stand out?"Mary argued."What if we
have a book reading session with some authors?Or....?"
Alex, however, didn't seem interested in exploring new ideas. He rolled his eyes at Mary's suggestions for
creativity, arguing that they didn't have the time or resources to try new things. He believed the usual methods would
work best.
Paral:Despite their different opinions,Mary tried to find a solution that both could agree on.
Para 2:After the activity,Mr.Thompson called them into his office.
