Hello, everyone. I’m glad to be here with you to talk about your children’s eyesight. A recent survey says that, in America, about 40% of adults are short-sighted, up from 25% in 1971. Rates have similarly soared in other countries. If current trends continue, half the world’s population will be short-sighted by 2050. What explains this global eyesight crisis? According to scientists, while a family history of nearsightedness raises the risk of a child developing it, a purely genetic case of nearsightedness is rare. Instead, lifestyle factors are thought to be more significant, especially a lack of time outdoors. From 2015 to 2019, the highest nearsightedness rate measured among six-year-old children was 5.7%. In June 2020, after 5 months of lockdown, the rate shot up to 21.5%. To make matters worse, children are becoming nearsighted at a younger age. It’ll take some time to spot the problem and correct it. But the most important thing is that we should help the children keep away from nearsightedness in advance. How? The following methods you can take into consideration in your daily life…

Tobi, a 15-year-old dog with messy brown fur, was happily walking with his owner and best friend, Andrea Caceres, in a park of New York City one day in August. He wasn’t scared at all by the noise of cars from the nearby road, or even when a loud ambulance rushed past. “He’s a true New Yorker,” Caceres said with a laugh.
But the little dog wasn’t always so familiar with the big city. Caceres’ new children’s book, Hello, Tobi!, is a celebration of Tobi’s walks in the parks when he first arrived in New York. Tobi was born in Valencia, Venezuela. Back then, Caceres was planning to become a civil engineer. “While I was studying, I started illustrating,” she said. “And I started illustrating Tobi.” Without ever taking a single art class, Caceres graduated with an engineering degree—but she pursued work as an artist.
In 2016, Caceres moved to the United States and found a position as a textile designer. “I was designing for other people here. I didn’t have time to do anything for myself,” she said. Worse of all, she had to leave Tobi back in Venezuela. She missed him immensely, and she was eager for a creative outlet to help her through all the transitions she was going through. So she started a project: Every day, for a whole year, she would draw a different dog. She called the project “A Dog A Day Keeps the Stress Away”, and the first dog she drew in January 2018 was, of course, Tobi.
The illustrations took off. Soon, Cáceres started getting invited to draw people’s pets and paint murals for cafés and vet clinics. Best of all, after more than two years apart, she saved enough to bring Tobi to New York. “The moment he saw me, he started crying,” she recalled. Hello, Tobi! is a portrait of this period.
In real life and in the story, Tobi greets all the different people at the park—but he has a clear favorite: his own family. “He loves me and I just always love him back,” Cáceres said.
24. Why did Cáceres say Tobi is “a true New Yorker”?
A. Because Tobi has been raised up in New York.
B. Because Tobi has found a lot of local friends here.
C. Because Tobi has adapted to the noisy urban environment.
D. Because Tobi has got familiar with various roads in this city.
25. Why did Cáceres start “A Dog A Day Keeps the Stress Away”?
A. To improve her skills as a textile designer.
B. To create a new children’s book about dogs.
C. To remember her fond memories in Venezuela.
D. To cope with the changes and stress in her new life.
26. What happened to Cáceres after the success of her illustrations?
A. She opened her own art studio in New York City.
B. She earned enough money to reunite with her dog.
C. She became a full-time writer of children’s books.
D. She decided to move back to Venezuela permanently.
27. Which of the following can best describe Cáceres?
A. Positive and artistic. B. Talented and generous.
C. Creative and independent. D. Brave and cooperative.
C 25. D 26. B 27. A

Explaining the science behind memory and memory loss, as well as strategies that help people remember better is the subject of a new book co-authored by Professor and Chair of Psychology and Neuroscience Elizabeth A. Kensinger.
In Why We Forget and How to Remember Better: The Science Behind Memory, Kensinger and Boston University Professor of Neurology Andrew E. Budson examine how memories exist in the short term and how they get stored for longer-term access. The book explains how memory influences our behavior without our awareness, underlining the fact that what and how we remember influences everything from our social relationships to the decisions we make on a daily basis.
“When most of us talk about our memory, we are referring to our ability to bring specific past events to mind,” said Kensinger. “But memory is so much more than that, including all the ways our past experiences influence our current thoughts and behavior. Memory can be thought of as a powerful source of data that the brain can use to make sense of the present moment and to make predictions about the future.”
Memory is an active and cyclical (循环的) process, Kensinger said, similar to building a structure out of blocks. “As you experience an event, you’re documenting different features of the event in different regions of the brain; one region of your brain is documenting the sounds, another the sights, another the emotions,” she said. “A particular region of your brain, the hippocampus (海马体), is serving as the tape that connects those blocks together, and that stores the blueprints (蓝图) for how to later rebuild that memory structure.”
Kensinger and Budson discuss memory as a cycle. When individuals rebuild a memory, they’re likely to update it with current information — for example, a friend has changed their appearance by growing a beard, or cutting their hair. Once updated or modified, these revised blueprints are stored again. “In this way, memory is a continually changing documentation; it is not a static documentation of the past,” said Kensinger.
28. What do Kensinger and Budson study in their book?
A. How to improve long-term memory.
B. The process of short-term and long-term memory storage.
C. The influence of memory on decision-making in business.
D. Strategies to help people forget unpleasant memories.
29. Which of the following can be the best title for the third paragraph?
A. Memory: More Than Bringing Past Events to Mind
B. The Definition of Memory in Our Daily Life
C. Memory: A Powerful Tool for Prediction
D. How Memory Influences Social Relationships
30. According to Kensinger, what is the role of the hippocampus in memory?
A. It stores the emotions related to an event.
B. It documents the sounds of an event.
C. It connects different features of an event and stores memory blueprints.
D. It makes predictions about the future based on past memories.
31. What can we infer from the text about memory?
A. Memory is a completely static process that doesn’t change over time.
B. The way we remember has little impact on our daily life.
C. Updating memories with current information is an important part of the memory cycle.
D. Only the hippocampus is involved in the memory-building process.
B 29. A 30. C 31. C
根据第二段“In Why We Forget and How to Remember Better: The Science Behind Memory, Kensinger and Boston University Professor of Neurology Andrew E. Budson examine how memories exist in the short term and how they get stored for longer-term access.(在Why We Forget and How to Remember Better一书中,Kensinger和波士顿大学神经病学教授Andrew E.Budson研究了记忆在短期内是如何存在的,以及它们是如何被存储以供长期访问的)”可知,Kensinger和Budson在他们的书中研究了记忆如何以短期形式存在以及它们如何被存储以便长期使用,即研究了短期和长期记忆存储的过程。
根据第三段““When most of us talk about our memory, we are referring to our ability to bring specific past events to mind,” said Kensinger. “But memory is so much more than that, including all the ways our past experiences influence our current thoughts and behavior. Memory can be thought of as a powerful source of data that the brain can use to make sense of the present moment and to make predictions about the future.”(肯辛格说:“当我们大多数人谈论我们的记忆时,我们指的是我们回忆过去特定事件的能力。”。“但记忆远不止于此,包括我们过去的经历影响我们当前思想和行为的所有方式。记忆可以被认为是大脑用来理解当下和预测未来的强大数据来源。”)” 可知,当我们大多数人谈论记忆时,我们指的是回忆特定过去事件的能力,但记忆远不止如此,它还包括过去经历影响我们当前思想和行为的所有方式,所以该段主要强调记忆不只是唤起过去事件,还有更多内涵。故选A项。
根据第四段“ “As you experience an event, you’re documenting different features of the event in different regions of the brain; one region of your brain is documenting the sounds, another the sights, another the emotions,” she said. “A particular region of your brain, the hippocampus (海马体), is serving as the tape that connects those blocks together, and that stores the blueprints (蓝图) for how to later rebuild that memory structure.”(她说:“当你经历一个事件时,你会在大脑的不同区域记录事件的不同特征;你大脑的一个区域正在记录声音,另一个区域在记录景象,还有一个区域记录情绪。”。“你大脑的一个特定区域,海马体,充当将这些块连接在一起的磁带,并存储蓝图(蓝图),以便以后如何重建该内存结构。”)”可知,海马体起到连接事件不同特征(声音、景象、情感等)的“胶带”作用,并存储着以后重建记忆结构的“蓝图”。故选C项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Kensinger and Budson discuss memory as a cycle. When individuals rebuild a memory, they’re likely to update it with current information — for example, a friend has changed their appearance by growing a beard, or cutting their hair. Once updated or modified, these revised blueprints are stored again. “In this way, memory is a continually changing documentation; it is not a static documentation of the past,” said Kensinger.(Kensinger和Budson将记忆视为一个循环。
D
Scientists have long explored to turn the mechanical energy of raindrops into electricity. However, traditional droplet (液滴) generators have problems like being heavy, expensive, and hard to make in large sizes. A team from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics has created a new floating droplet electricity generator. It uses water in its structure, making it lighter, cheaper and more eco-friendly.
Unlike most existing generators that use solid platforms and metal electrode (电极), the new device floats on water. Water here works both as a support and a conductive electrode. This special design cuts the device’s weight by about 80% and its cost by nearly half, while it still produces as much electricity as traditional systems.
When a raindrop hits the floating layer of the generator, the water below takes in the impact and helps the drop spread out. At the same time, ions (离子) in the water carry electric charges. Together, these things let the generator make about 250 volts of electricity from one raindrop. The generator also has smart drainage holes. These holes use water’s surface tension to remove extra water without letting it flow back, so the generator works stably. It can also work well in different temperatures and salt levels, even in natural lake water. Its special structure makes it strong enough for bad environments.
Another advantage of this new technology is its capacity for large-scale production. Researchers built a 0.3-square-meter model, which is much bigger than earlier ones. It can power 50 LEDs at the same time and charge small batteries in minutes. This means it could be used to power small electronic devices and sensors on lakes or near the sea, without taking up any land.
Professor Wanlin Guo, who led the study, said this “nature-integrated” design is a big step for cheap and light hydropower systems. These systems can work with solar and wind power. Besides making electricity, the technology can also help monitor water environments, like powering sensors that check water quality. Of course, there are still challenges. For example, raindrops fall unevenly, and the generator’s long-term outdoor use needs more testing. But this floating generator is still an important progress for practical hydropower use.
32. What is the main advantage of the floating generator over traditional ones?
A. It uses eco-friendly metal electrodes. B. It produces higher voltage per raindrop.
C. It works efficiently in desert environments. D. It reduces weight and cost significantly.
33. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The materials used to make the new generator.
B. The working environment of the new generator.
C. The working principle and strengths of the new generator.
D. The differences between the new generator and traditional ones.
34. The 0.3-square-meter model in Para 4 demonstrates ________.
A. the generator’s powerful capacity B. the larger size of traditional versions
C. the reliability of outdoor operations D. the ability to monitor the water quality
35. What is the author’s attitude toward the new generator?
A. Doubtful about its practical value.
B. Unconcerned about its technical details.
C. Cautiously optimistic about its future use.
D. Confident that it will replace other energy sources.
D 33. C 34. A 35. C

Its special structure makes it strong enough for bad environments.(当雨滴击中发电机的漂浮层时,下面的水吸收冲击力并帮助雨滴扩散。
根据第四段中“Researchers built a 0.3-square-meter model, which is much bigger than earlier ones. It can power 50 LEDs at the same time and charge small batteries in minutes.(研究人员建造了一个0.3平方米的模型,比之前的模型大得多。它可以同时为50个LED供电,并在几分钟内为小电池充电。)”可知,0.3平方米的模型展示了发电机的强大能力。故选A。
根据最后一段“Professor Wanlin Guo, who led the study, said this “nature-integrated” design is a big step for cheap and light hydropower systems. These systems can work with solar and wind power. Besides making electricity, the technology can also help monitor water environments, like powering sensors that check water quality. Of course, there are still challenges. For example, raindrops fall unevenly, and the generator’s long-term outdoor use needs more testing. But this floating generator is still an important progress for practical hydropower use.(领导这项研究的郭万林教授表示,这种“自然融合”的设计是廉价轻型水电系统的一大进步。这些系统可以与太阳能和风能一起工作。除了发电,这项技术还可以帮助监测水环境,比如为检测水质的传感器供电。当然,仍然存在挑战。例如,雨滴下落不均匀,发电机的长期户外使用需要更多的测试。但这种漂浮式发电机仍然是实际水电应用的一个重要进展。)”可知,作者引用教授的积极观点,且表示这种发电机的应用方面也有挑战,对新型发电机的未来使用持谨慎乐观的态度。故选C。

Elective Courses: Subject-based or Interest-oriented?
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version:
As for the elective courses to be offered in our school, I strongly believe they should be designed mainly according to students’ interests.
Compared with required subjects, elective courses are meant to broaden students’ horizons rather than simply improve test scores. When allowed to choose courses they are truly interested in, students are more likely to learn actively instead of passively completing tasks. This not only increases learning efficiency but brings out their strengths and talents. What’s more, interest-oriented courses can reduce study pressure and provide students with opportunities to relax and think creatively, which is especially important in a highly competitive learning environment.
Therefore, focusing on students’ interests will better serve the purpose of elective courses and contribute to students’ all-round development.

Jane’s family used to live in a modest but cozy house on a quiet street in New York. A white wooden door stood at the entrance, slightly worn from years of use, and two wide windows faced the street, letting in soft morning light. In front of the house grew an old maple tree, whose shade covered the yard every summer and whose red leaves always announced the arrival of autumn. It was not the size of the house that mattered, but the sense of belonging it gave to everyone who lived there.
Everything was taken away in a single night. A sudden wildfire swept through the area, moving faster than anyone had expected. Jane and her parents escaped with only a few personal belongings. When they were finally allowed to return, nothing remained but ashes and broken walls. Their home, along with everything inside it, was gone forever.
Since then, the family had been staying in a government-arranged temporary shelter. The room was clean but cold, and it never truly felt like home. Jane noticed that her parents spoke less and smiled less. Her mother often stared silently out of the window, while her father tried to stay busy, as if work could keep his sadness away. The coming of winter only made things harder.
As Christmas drew near, the shelter was decorated with simple lights, but the holiday spirit felt distant to Jane’s family. In the past, this was the season when her parents would put up decorations and play music at home. Now, those traditions seemed painfully far away. Seeing her parents’ low spirits, Jane felt a deep ache in her heart. She wished she could do something to bring back even a small part of what they had lost.
One evening, while scrolling through her phone, Jane came across a post shared online. It was about an artist who offered to paint pictures of homes destroyed in the New York fire, free of charge, so that families could keep a lasting memory of what they had lost. At the end of the post, a simple note caught her eye: “If you need help, you may contact me at the number below.”

Gently, Jane handed the newly received painting to her parents.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version:
An idea slowly formed in her mind. Taking a deep breath, Jane picked up her phone and got through to the number. On the phone, she explained what her family had been through and described the house in careful detail. After digesting her emotional words, the artist paused and then promised to represent their home on the canvas. Days passed slowly, and Jane checked her phone again and again in anxiety. Then one afternoon, a parcel finally arrived. Upon seeing the long-anticipated painting, she, without a moment’s delay, rushed off to find her parents.
Carefully, Jane gently handed the newly received picture to her parents. They leaned closer, hardly breathing. The house in the painting looked alive, filled with light and warmth. Tears rolled down their faces, but this time they were not only from sadness. A soft smile appeared, breaking the long silence. Jane felt her heart lighten as she watched them. The shelter no longer seemed so cold, for the picture had brought their memories — and their home — back to them.
