Writing a manuscript (手稿), finding a publishing and reaching out to readers are all tough tasks. As a young girl aged 18, Emily Carter not only has published a book but also works for the noble cause of environmental protection. Emily uses her position to spread awareness among people to conserve (保护) our environment. Her grandfather and others in the family motivated her to publish her poems and she did so by finally launching the book Mystic. As soon as the book was published, many people liked and appreciated her poems. Her book got much love from readers and she became a well-known figure. Emily started writing at an early age, by penning down her life experiences in her diary in the form of poetry. Emily uses rhythmic descriptions of the natural surroundings, leaving the readers fascinated by the subtle differences in life and the natural world. She conveys the various moods in the different situations of life and expresses her inner thoughts beautifully in the book. Her poems generate a range of emotions in the readers, thus forming a strong connection with them. And this young girl published the book, intending to raise funds to fight climate change. All sale earnings from this book were donated to D-CAL, an organization working for environmental conservation. During their teenage years, most young people are busy with studies or other activities, and hardly care about our environment or their contribution to society. However, Emily’s focus has always been on bringing about a positive change in society. With a passion for protecting the environment, the young environmentalist is doing her best to make her voice heard and create a better future for the coming generations. A girl with many talents, Emily is indeed an inspiration to many ambitious young writers. 4. What made Emily Carter famous? A. Her wonderful life experiences. B. She has a lot of free time at her disposal. C. She is committed to creating a better society. D. She is able to support herself through high school. 7. Which of the following words can best describe Emily Carter? A. Confident and honest. B. Courageous and calm. C. Ambitious and patient. D. Generous and passionate. C Copenhagen is a beautiful city of Denmark that attracts a lot of tourists, especially during the summer. Though tourism is great for the economy, it is also bad for the environment. Now tourists who take part in green activities like picking up rubbish, using public transport (交通), or biking around the city are rewarded (回报) with food and activities. This project is called CopenPay, whose purpose is to help reduce the environmental costs of tourism. The project was introduced by Copenhagen’s official tourism organization to get tourists to act in an eco-friendlier way according to the Wonderful Copenhagen website. Though it is trust- based, some places may ask you to show a photo of you doing a green activity or a train ticket. Though the largest environmental cost is the transportation to Copenhagen, especially if you fly or drive, the tourist board’s communications chief (旅游局通信主管) Rikke Holm Petersen said, “One of the things we can change is getting people to act in an eco-friendlier way at the destination.” There are now 24 members in the program, reported Forbes, including museums. restaurants, and urban experiences for tourists to take part in. While there are several places offering free ice cream or coffee for taking public transport, there are other experiences that are related to Danish culture. Visitors to the National Gallery who bring plastic waste can take part in a workshop to turn the rubbish into a piece of art. Tourists can help care for the gardens at the Blixen Museum for free admission. There are free tours at the Cisternerne underground art hall if you walk or bike to the place. You can also get a free lunch for volunteering at an urban farm. While none of these activities will make a huge influence on the environment, it’ll change people’s thoughts and that may be the most important thing tourists can bring home from their vacation. 8. How can you get free food as a visitor to Copenhagen? A. By sharing a car. B. By taking a bus to travel. C. By helping old people. D. By taking care of wild animals. 9. What does the author want to show by mentioning Rikke Holm Petersen? A. The difficulty of the project. B. The success in the project. C. The reason for the project. D The guess at the project. 10 What do we know about eco-friendly actions in Copenhagen? A. They are praised on websites. B. They take place mostly in museums. C. They get rewarded in different ways. D. They want to show Danish culture. 11. What is the importance of CopenPay according to the text? A. Changing the local environment greatly. B. Making tourists think highly of Copenhagen. C. Helping get more money from local tourism. D. Developing people’s environmental understanding. D The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical — but it’s a real ability that some creatures have. A family of African fish known as Momyrids are weakly electric and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish. “We developed a new strategy for 3D motion positioning by electronic skin, bio-inspired by ‘electric fish,’” says Dr. Xinge Yu, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Eagineering at the City University of Hong Kong. The team described their e-skin sensor in a paper published on November 14 in Nature. The artificial sensor is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (发射器), which will generate an electric field once activated, and another layer acts as a receiver to detect both the direction and the distance to an object. A separate controller creates the driving signal to activate the transmitter. When an object comes within range, the electric field around the sensor is disrupted, which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then processed by a microcontroller unit, which computes the position of the target object and sends that information to a smartphone or other devices. A special biogel (生物凝胶) is used in the sensor, which has the ability to transmit and receive electric signals from a pattern of microchannels on the surface. The end result is a sensor that is thin, soft and flexible, making it easy to adapt to irregular surfaces, such as the human body. In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing. The researchers hope that this sensor could one day open up a new range of wearable technologies, including sensors for human-machine interaction and thin, flexible e-skin. 12. The first paragraph aims to show _________. A. the special ability of African fish B. the inspiration for a new invention C. the big challenge of locating objects D. the reason for developing a sensor 13. What does the underlined word “disrupted” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. disturb. B. arrange. C. enhance. D. stabilize. 14. What is an advantage of the new sensor system? A. Its sensitivity to different stimulations. B. Its adaptation to environmental changes. C. Its efficiency in achieving 3D positioning. D. Its speed in data collection and processing. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Machine Detective “Wears” Flexible E-skin B. Bio-inspired Sensor “Feels” Without Touching C. E-Skin Sensor: The Future of Machine Learning D. Electric Fields: The Frontier of Object Detection If I could offer you a magic drug that would make you happier, healthier, more optimistic and more productive, and cost nothing and will require very little effort, would you be interested? A flash of lightning cut through the sky, followed by a thunderous boom that seemed to split the night. The sound of the storm kept reminding Tom of how unpredictable life could be. When Tom attended school, he had dreamed of becoming a doctor to help others. But life took an unexpected turn. His mother was seriously ill. To take care of her and pay for her medical expenses, he had to give up his dream and worked at the cafe during the night shift. Every night, as he served customers and cleaned up, he couldn’t help but wonder what life would have been like if his mother hadn’t fallen ill. As Tom was seated behind the counter, lost in thought about his life’s unexpected turns, suddenly a loud crash broke the silence of the night. Driven by curiosity or perhaps a sense of urgency, Tom rushed out of the cafe with an umbrella. There, in the dim light cast by the cafe’s sign, he found a middle-aged man lying on the wet ground nearby with a motorcycle lying next to him, its engine silent. Tom approached cautiously. The man was struggling to move, his face twisted in pain. Mud and rainwater stained his clothes, and one of his ankles appeared to be injured. Tom quickly helped the man sit up and leaned him against the cafe wall for support. “Sir, are you okay?” Tom asked, his voice steady but filled with concern. The man groaned (呻吟) as his hand wrapped tightly around his ankle. “I think I twisted it in the fall,” he managed to say through gritted (咬紧的) teeth. The rain continued to pour, making the situation even more miserable. Tom knew the poor man needed help and that he had to act fast. Putting the umbrella in the man’s hand, Tom dashed back to the cafe. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Two days later, Tom received a card and a cheque from the man. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 固镇县毛钽厂实验中学2024~2025学年高二5月月考 英语 考生注意: 1. 1. I would like to offer you some advice. As we all know, it is important to have a good breakfast that consists of grain, fruit and vegetables. However, you don’t have the habit of having breakfast, which is harmful to your health. I think you should develop a healthy habit from now on. It is also wise to take enough exercise every day, which will help you stay energetic and free from disease. I hope that you will find my advice useful. Putting the umbrella in the man’s hand, Tom dashed back to the cafe. He made an emergency call, providing the exact location of the accident and briefly describing the man’s situation. Then he grabbed an ice bag from the fridge and hurried back into the rain again. Gently, he applied the ice to the man’s swollen ankle, hoping to ease the swelling. To take the man’s mind off his pain, he began sharing stories about his own dream and the unexpected turn in his life. With Tom by his side, the man felt somewhat better. They both breathed a sigh of relief as the ambulance arrived, and the medical team carefully transported the man to safety. Two days later, Tom received a card and a cheque from the man. Inside the card, the man wrote, “Thank you for your kindness and help. Hope the money can help you pursue your dream.” Holding the cheque in his hand, Tom felt tears of gratitude and joy welling up in his eyes. Never had he expected that his small act of kindness would bring him such an unexpected blessing. Through the experience, he came to understand that life is a journey filled with unexpected turns, but as long as you don’t give up, it will eventually lead to your destination.
