A
China’s newest carrier rocket, the Long March 12, made its first flight on Nov. 30th, 2024 in Hainan. It is special in many ways. The Long March 12 is the first Chinese rocket with a diameter of 3.8 meters. Most Chinese rockets are 3.35 meters wide, a limit set in the 1960s for transporting things by rail. A wider body allows the rocket to hold 30% more propellant (推进剂) and carry heavier things.
The launch also used a new technology called tethered release technology (牵制释放技术). Before, rockets would launch as soon as they had enough thrust (推力). Now, with the new technology, rockets don’t just take off straight away. They stay still for a short time. During this time, workers quickly check for problems. If everything looks good, the rocket is then launched. This makes sure that both the rocket and things on the ground are safe.
More importantly, the Long March 12 is the first rocket launched at the Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Center. The site has two launch towers. The No. 2 tower can launch over 10 kinds of rockets, different from government-run sites’ towers that can only launch one kind. This is possible because the tower uses an interface (接口) for different rocket sizes.

The war between Russia and Ukraine itself may be a questionable topic, yet it is the people who suffer the most. More than 4 million Ukrainians had been forced to leave their homeland one month after it began. It was the biggest migration (移民) wave since World War II.
I wanted to help by being a volunteer. However, it was difficult because I don’t speak Russian or Ukrainian. Luckily, after searching on the Internet, I was finally able to sign up to volunteer in a modern art museum called Svetova.
The art museum is owned by an overseas Chinese in Prague, Czech Republic, and had over 40 volunteers to provide help to the Ukrainian refugees (难民). During a two-week non-stop aid program, the art museum provided a place to live and food for up to five people for free and also served as a safe and interesting space for children, where English classes, games and other fun activities were organized.
Thanks to my busy schoolwork, I was only able to volunteer there twice. However, besides the owner and his family, I was the first Chinese volunteer. My role was to help the refugees fill out registration (登记) papers. Sometimes, it was difficult with the language barrier, but there were translators to help.
I was so touched by one Ukrainian mother and her two kids, who still had such kind smiles and bright eyes, though they must have experienced all the awful things. Some other people may not be able to easily understand their feelings, but I really valued this chance to be with those people in need, doing what I could. Because we are all humans, we should come together in difficult times.

B.Because the writer’s parents didn’t support the idea.
C.Because there was a problem with the writer’s internet connection.
D.Because the writer speaks neither Russian nor Ukrainian.
23.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.What volunteers needed to do to help refugees.
B.How the art museum trained its volunteers.
C.How the writer became a volunteer at Svetova.
D.What the art museum did to help refugees from Ukraine.
24.Which blank can be filled with the underlined word “barrier”?
A.To get good grades, you should have a good exam ________.
B.He is happy that his parents always give him ________ in choosing what he likes to do.
C.The police put a ________ across the road.
D.About 60 students across the Taiwan Straits had ________ about carrying forward Chinese culture.
25.Why did the writer consider it a valuable experience to be such a volunteer?
A.Because he/she could help others in need.
B.Because it helped him/her to understand the feelings of refugees.
C.Because he/she experienced some awful things.
D.Because it helped him/her get into a good college.

Kites, known as “Zhiyuan” in ancient China, have a history spanning over 2,000 years. Originating during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), they were initially used for military purposes, such as measuring distances and sending signals. 26 Later, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, paper replaced silk and wood, making kites lighter and more accessible to ordinary people.
By the Tang and Song Dynasties, kite-flying became a popular folk activity. 27 For example, the famous Qingming Festival poem “Children Return Early from School to Fly Kites in the East Wind” reflects its cultural significance. Over time, distinct regional styles emerged. In Beijing, the “Sha Yan” (沙燕, Sand Swallow) kite symbolizes joy and harmony, often painted with bold colors like red and gold. 28 Meanwhile, Nantong’s “Ban Yao” (板鹞) kites, decorated with hundreds of bamboo whistles, create musical sounds in the wind, earning them the nickname “sky orchestras”.
Traditional kite-making involves four steps: tying bamboo frames, pasting paper or silk, painting symbolic patterns (e.g., dragons for power or butterflies for love), and flying with balanced strings. 29 Today, cities like Weifang host international kite festivals, blending ancient craftsmanship with modem designs inspired by space exploration or animated characters.
30 From military tools to artistic wonders, Chinese kites continue to bridge history and innovation, carrying both cultural pride and human creativity into the skies.

⑦Protect and respect! Never share your passwords with anyone. It’s not wise to post your home or email address online. Don’t say bad things about people. If you get messages like that or see them online, talk to your parents or your teachers.

D.Because the writer speaks neither Russian nor Ukrainian.
23.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

D.What the art museum did to help refugees from Ukraine.

D.About 60 students across the Taiwan Straits had ________ about carrying forward Chinese culture.

Nowadays short videos are very popular with people. Many students enjoy watching and sharing them too.
Firstly, short videos are popular because they are short and interesting. They help us relax and learn useful things quickly. For example, some students share study tips through videos. Secondly, we can get information about different topics like science or art. However, there are some problems. The quality of videos varies—some are helpful while others are not. Also, watching too many videos wastes time and may hurt our eyes if we stare at screens for hours.
In my opinion, short videos can be good if we use them wisely. We should choose useful content and control our screen time. Remember to rest our eyes often. Let’s enjoy technology without letting it control us.
