The Swiss extreme skiing pioneer became the first to successfully rush down the Spencer Couloir’s 55-degree slope (斜坡) — with more than 200 turns, at speeds close to freefall on France’s Aiguille de Blaitière mountain in 1967. Locals didn’t trust that he’d really done it until a plane flew over the mountain and took photos of his ski tracks. Nicknamed the “skier of the impossible,” Saudan sought out slopes from the Himalayas to the Alps, often reaching the peaks by helicopter. But in 1982, he climbed for 25 days to reach the 26, 500-foot summit of Pakistan’s Gasherbrum I, searching for virgin areas in its natural state. “The first to dare something are the real adventurers,” he said in 2016. “It’s the first that counts.” Raised on a farm in the Alps, Saudan didn’t have the resources to train as a competitive skier, and worked as a laborer and truck driver before becoming a ski instructor. Teaching through icy winters in Scotland helped prepare him for deadly slopes. After skiing the Spencer Couloir, he spent two decades “seeking greater challenges and testing new methods,” said The Washington Post. He developed a new skiing style and introduced equipment innovations for steep slopes, but ignored safety precautions as he shot down Oregon’s Mount Hood, Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro, and Nepal’s Dhaulagiri. Saudan completed his last major expedition in 1986 by skiing down Mount Fuji on bare rocks, walking away without a single cut. He “spent his life challenging gravity, avalanches, and obituary (讣告) writers,” said The New York Times. He insisted that mental preparation helped keep fear cornered, yet death was never far from his mind. “There’s really only one way out,” he said: “Don’t fall down.” 24. How did people react to Saudan’s achievement on the Spencer Couloir’s 55-degree slope? A. They thought of him as a skiing pioneer. B. They considered it as a fact at once. C. They were ignorant of it completely. D. They doubted it till evidence arrived. 25. Which of the following can best describe Saudan? A. Brave and generous. B. Adventurous and devoted. C. Creative but timid. D. Reserved but famous. 26. Why did Saudan go skiing? A. To escape his past life as a laborer. B. To push himself to new limits. C. To document adventures for fame. D. To test new skiing equipment. 27. What does The New York Times imply about Saudan? A. He faced extreme dangers in his career. B. He was cautious during his expeditions. C. His skiing methods were widely accepted. D. His achievements were often questioned. 24. D 25. B 26. B 27. He developed a new skiing style and introduced equipment innovations for steep slopes, but ignored safety precautions as he shot down Oregon’s Mount Hood, Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro, and Nepal’s Dhaulagiri.(《华盛顿邮报》说,在斯宾塞库卢瓦滑雪后,他花了20年时间寻求更大的挑战,并尝试新的方法。 根据第一段中西尔万·索丹的话“The first to dare something are the real adventurers.(第一个敢于尝试的人才是真正的冒险家)”、第二段中“After skiing the Spencer Couloir, he spent two decades ‘seeking greater challenges and testing new methods,’(在斯宾塞库卢瓦滑雪后,他花了二十年时间‘寻求更大的挑战和测试新方法’)”和最后一段中“He ‘spent his life challenging gravity, avalanches, and obituary (讣告) writers,’ said The New York Times.(他‘一生都在挑战重力、雪崩和讣告作者们,’《纽约时报》说。)” 根据最后一段中“He ‘spent his life challenging gravity, avalanches, and obituary (讣告) writers,’ said The New York Times. Why animals in the southern region have so far escaped infection is a mystery, but scientists have several theories. For one, Australia is geographically isolated and doesn’t import live poultry, says Frank Wong, a virologist at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness. Many of the countries’ birds are endemic (地方性的)and do not migrate to regions where the virus is spreading. But the virus’s arrival in Australia is “a matter of when, not if”, says Michelle Wille at the University of Melboume, Australia. She thinks that long-distance migratory shorebirds and seabirds that come from Siberia and Alaska through southeast Asia to Australia are most likely to carry the virus into the country. Another possible route for the virus is through ducks. Scientists think migrating ducks and geese in other parts of the world can spread the disease without dying from it. That’s because ducks have a biological sensor, known as RIG-I, that detects an invading flu virus and triggers an immune response that usually fights it off. Kirsty Short says ducks might have evolved such defences in Asia from repeated infections with many weaker forms of the virus, giving them pre-existing immunity. Although they don’t get sick from H5N1, they can still pass it on, and ducks gather in lakes and ponds with other birds, increasing the chances of disease spread. Oceania has isolated ecosystems. This isolation is partly explained by a biogeographical division called the Wallace Line. Many animal species tend to stay on one side of the line or the other, and because of this isolation, the species on each side are distinct. The sharp division might also mean that the virus is not adapted to animals east of the Wallace Line, says Wong. “Bird flu viruses are particularly well-adapted to certain species,” he says. Birds in Australia could have a genetic make-up that bypasses the usual infection route for the virus, but no one has yet tested this assumption. Although many duck species are short-distance migratory birds and tend not to cross the Wallace Line, some species—including Pacific black duck and spotted whistling duck—do, and Wille thinks they could introduce H5N1 to the region. If the virus is detected, government vets will immediately move in to kill the affected population, which happened when H7N3 and H7N9 strains of the flu were detected in Victoria in May. Short says that, when it happens, the impact on Australia’s birds, mammals and ecosystems is unknown, but many species could probably be affected. “It’s a big research gap.” she says. 28. Which viewpoint does Michelle Wille most agree with? A. The virus is unlikely to spread to Australia soon. B. It is ducks that will bring the virus into Australia. C. Migration patterns will keep Australia safe from infection. D. The arrival of the virus in Australia is highly possible. 29. What is suggested about birds in Australia regarding the virus? A. They have been tested and found resistant. B. They migrate to areas where the virus spreads. C. They may have genetic traits that prevent infection. D. They are more susceptible to infection than other birds. 30. Which of the following statements is correct according to the passage? A. There is a lack of research on the virus’ impact. B. Government measures will prevent outbreaks in Australia. C. Birds in Australia have become immune due to past exposure. D. The Wallace Line guarantees that the virus will not reach Australia. 31. What could be the best title of the passage? A. The Spread of Bird Flu in Australia B Is Australia Immune from Bird Flu? C. Why Are Ducks Responsible for Bird Flu? D. Bird Flu: A Global Concern 【答案】28. D 29. C 30. A 31. She thinks that long-distance migratory shorebirds and seabirds that come from Siberia and Alaska through southeast Asia to Australia are most likely to carry the virus into the country.(但澳大利亚墨尔本大学的Michelle Wille说,病毒到达澳大利亚是“时间问题,而不是有没有可能”。 根据第六段“The sharp division might also mean that the virus is not adapted to animals east of the Wallace Line, says Wong. “Bird flu viruses are particularly well-adapted to certain species,” he says. Birds in Australia could have a genetic make-up that bypasses the usual infection route for the virus, but no one has yet tested this assumption.(黄说,这种巨大的区别也可能意味着病毒不适于华莱士线以东的动物。 根据第九段“Short says that, when it happens, the impact on Australia’s birds, mammals and ecosystems is unknown, but many species could probably be affected. “It’s a big research gap.” she says.(Short说,当这一情况发生时,会对澳大利亚鸟类、哺乳动物和生态系统产生的影响尚不清楚,但许多物种可能会受到影响。“这是一个很大的研究差距。”她说)”可知,对于禽流感病毒会在澳大利亚造成的影响,相关研究是匮乏的。故选A。 B。 D The Renaissance of Creative Thought is burgeoning, perhaps even burgeoning. If you attempted to absorb all the wisdom available today, you would need more than 180 million years to do so. But you are mistaken to assume that all this wisdom would stimulate a surge of innovation to match the abundance of knowledge. Indeed, the last time we found ourselves in a period of significant innovation, pursuing the ideas with the most profound impact, was more than 120 years ago, in a period called the Renaissance of Insight. Innovations, both grand and modest, originate from a new idea. Often, these ideas emerge as a moment of insight — the outcome of a novel connection in our minds made between existing and new knowledge. Studies reveal insights involve quiet signals deep in the brain, just under the surface of awareness. Anything that aids us in noticing quiet signals, such as taking breaks between engagements, adopting essential learning approaches, or steering clear of distractions like social media, can enhance the likelihood of insights. However, it is becoming increasingly challenging to find those quiet signals with the escalating use of technology, filling every moment with emergencies and an endless supply of content. Moreover, we also aspire to elevate the quality of them — to be able to sift through grand new ideas and identify the ones that hold genuine value, which can be difficult to measure. Launched in 2015, the Insight Meter (洞察力计量器) permits us to evaluate the potency of our insight experiences on a five-point scale, which is marked by intense emotions, motivation, memory advantage, aftershocks, and subsequent ideas. The Meter consolidates these five variables into a solitary value and enables us to define the significance of a new idea. The level-5 insight, involving the richest emotion, motivation, and lasting impact, holds the utmost significance. Since insights are one of the most effective ways to stimulate engagement, innovation, and behavioral change, the Insight Meter has extensive applications for gauging and enhancing individual and organizational performance. More importantly, it can be employed to measure the impact of different types of work environments and learning approaches on participants’ development — both in the moment or afterward. For organizations to reap the benefits of another age of insight, it is not sufficient to attempt to access more data or augment the number of insights we generate. Instead, it is about creating space for the most significant ideas to emerge from all the knowledge. Utilizing the shared language of the Insight Meter as a means to measure how important ideas are, relative to each other, will enable superior decision-making toward practical and competitive outcomes. And if we are to enter a new age of insight, we must design our environments to allow for the most exceptional insight possible to surface. 32. What does the underlined word “burgeoning” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Stabilizing. B. Exploding. C. Shifting. D. Collapsing. 33. According to the passage, how can the likelihood of insights be increased? A. By engaging in ongoing social media interactions. B. By relying on technology to receive regular notifications. C. By stepping away from computers between engagements. D. By participating in additional training and coaching sessions. 34. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The Insight Meter dictates the influence of our insights. B. Possessing minimal emotional responses is a level-5 insight. C. Both the quantity and quality of insights are essential to innovation. D. A breakthrough has been made in innovation due to a wealth of information. 35. What is the author’s attitude towards the current environment for innovations? A. Uncertain. B. Optimistic. C. Unconcerned. D. Dissatisfied. 32. B 33. C 34. C 35. He had a big lawn and wanted to plant some colorful flower bushes, herbs and crops. One day, Henry drove to the store to buy more gardening tools. While passing the neighborhood primary school, he noticed a boy being pressed against the wall by his classmates. “You’re such a loser, Lucas!” the kids shouted at him. The boy was close to tears, trembling and not saying a word. Greatly annoyed, Henry parked the car on the side of the road and approached them. “Why are you bullying this young boy? Do you want me to call your teachers or your parents? Leave him alone!” he shouted. Frightened by Henry, the boy’s classmates ran away immediately. Henry then asked the poor boy, “Are you all right?” The boy nodded and thanked Henry for help. After taking a good look at the boy, Henry realized that he was his neighbor Lucas, so he offered to take Lucas home after a quick stop at the store. While at the store, Lucas discovered Henry’s love for gardening. They talked about his crops and how gardening made the old man happy. On the drive home, Henry decided to ask Lucas about his classmates. “Why are they treating you like that? Do they always give you a hard time?” he asked the boy. “Yes. Maybe because I don’t like the same things as they do, they keep calling me a loser.” he sighed. “Have you ever asked your parents or teachers for help?” Henry added. “I think it’s better to avoid trouble if possible.” Lucas shook his head helplessly. Listening to Lucas’s answer, Henry recalled his days as a teacher. If he were still on the job, he would never allow such a thing to happen to his students. Looking at this poor child, Henry was determined to do something. Paragraph 1: The next day, Henry invited Lucas to visit his garden. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: One month later, cornered by his classmates once again, Lucas decided not to keep silent any more. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 The next day, Henry invited Lucas to visit his garden. Lucas was amazed by the lush greenery and the vibrant colors of the flowers. Henry showed him how to plant seeds and tend to the garden. As they spent time gardening together, Lucas found solace in the peaceful activity and joy in watching his efforts bloom into life. Henry took this opportunity to teach Lucas the values of patience, perseverance, and self-worth. Lucas began to visit Henry regularly, finding comfort and strength in their conversations and shared hobby.   One month later, cornered by his classmates once again, Lucas decided not to keep silent any more. Remembering Henry’s teachings, he stood his ground and spoke confidently, “I may not like the same things as you, but that doesn’t make me a loser.” His firmness surprised his classmates, and they didn’t know how to respond. Gradually, Lucas’s confidence grew, and he started making new friends who appreciated him for who he was. Lucas no longer felt lonely, and he continued to flourish both at school and in Henry’s garden. 词汇激活 行为类 ①开始:begin/start ②回答:respond/reply ③继续:continue/go on 情绪类 ①快乐:joy/happiness ②惊奇:amazed/surprised 【点睛】[高分句型1] Lucas began to visit Henry regularly, finding comfort and strength in their conversations and shared hobby. B Sylvain Saudan’s skiing was so alarmingly ambitious that people struggled to believe his accomplishments were real. C Australia and the rest of Oceania are the last regions free of bird flu that has caused mass mortality in birds across the world and a massive outbreak in dairy cattle in the United States. A They have been tested and found resistant. A. The Spread of Bird Flu in Australia B. Is Australia Immune from Bird Flu? C. Why Are Ducks Responsible for Bird Flu? D. Bird Flu: A Global Concern D The Renaissance of Creative Thought is burgeoning, perhaps even burgeoning. Since insights are one of the most effective ways to stimulate engagement innovation, and behavioral change, the Insight Meter has extensive applications for gauging and enhancing individual and organizational performance. B By relying on technology to receive regular notifications. Olympic medals are among the most respected honors in the sporting world, symbolizing not only athletic victory, but also the rich history, fine craftsmanship, and longstanding traditions of the Games. ____36____ Are they made entirely of gold, silver, and bronze? And what makes the Paris 2024 Olympic medals special? Originally, Olympic winners in 776 BCE were honored with olive wreaths (橄榄花环) rather than medals. The concept of medals as we know them today first emerged at the 1896 Athens Games. ____37____ Pure gold is soft and easily damaged. As a result, the International Olympic Committee later updated the regulations regarding medal composition and design. Modern gold medals are primarily composed of 92.5% silver with a six-gram gold plating for appearance. Silver medals, by contrast, live up to their names. They contain at least 92.5% pure silver, and bronze medals consist of 95% copper and 5% zinc (锌). ____38____ An Olympic gold medal may be worth over £500, but its value to athletes goes beyond its financial worth. ____39____ For instance, the 2012 London Olympics medals featured the River Thames and London skyline. Rio 2016 focused on sustainability by using leftover mirrors and X-ray plates. Tokyo 2020 medals, made from recycled electronics, emphasized technological innovation. For the Paris 2024 Olympics, the medals are particularly distinctive. Each features a hexagon (六边形) with the Paris 2024 logo on one side and Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, in front of the Eiffel Tower on the other. ____40____. As Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, stated, “These medals offer athletes a physical piece of Paris to take home.” A. When were these medals first introduced? B. Who is responsible for designing the medals? C. With these symbols, they honor the history of the Olympics. D. Unique to this year, the medals use metal from the Eiffel Tower. E. However, solid gold medals were no longer awarded after 1912. F. The design of medals reflects the host city’s distinct style and values. G. This mixture ensures the medals’ longevity and makes them cheaper. I was thrilled to cover a new expedition to Qomolangma as a journalist. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
