TIME named its Kid of the Year for 2024: Heman Bekele. This 15-year-old boy stood out for his idea to help treat skin (皮肤) cancer.
Heman’s family moved to the US from Ethiopia when he was four. While in Ethiopia, he saw people working in the hot sun without protection for their skin. This made them more likely to get skin cancer.
Treating skin cancer costs a lot of money—usually about 40,000 dollars. Heman wanted to find a cheaper way to help people. He thought of adding special medicine to soap (肥皂). This medicine can help treat skin cancer.
However, simply mixing the medicine and soap doesn’t work. The medicine just washes away. Heman thought about other ways. He tried dividing the medicine into tiny parts and adding them to the soap. These tiny parts stick to the skin after the soap has been washed off. This way, they can keep spreading the medicine.
Heman knows developing his soap will take a long time, but he’s excited about the work. He hopes other young people will try out their new ideas, too. “Just keep inventing,” he said. “Keep thinking of new ways to make our world a better place!”

① Nowadays, some young people like to treat themselves in a way that goes beyond the budget, such as having a very expensive dinner to make themselves feel good. What do you think of this kind of lifestyle?
② Some people think this lifestyle is bad because it doesn’t consider the future. First, short-lived happiness may stop us from working hard. When we spend too much time playing games or shopping, we might fall behind those who are working to improve themselves. Besides, avoiding challenges can make it hard to face difficult situations in the future. If we only do what makes us happy, it may be hard to achieve anything meaningful.
③ But others can see it in a positive way. Doing small things like drinking milk tea after a test or watching funny videos or other sports activities can help them feel better. These moments of joy help them face new challenges. After all, isn’t finding light in the darkness a form of wisdom?
④ In short, views on this lifestyle are different. The key may be to balance living in the moment and planning ahead. Face difficulties with courage and take on the responsibilities that come with being a young person today.

Because of climate change, North Pole might move about 27 meters west by 2100, according to a new study by a team of scientists in Switzerland.
After studying the movement of the North Pole from 1900 to 2018, the scientists think the North Pole will move because of global (全球的) warming. The rising global temperature is speeding up the melting of ice. In fact, by 2027, the Arctic may have its first summer with no ice at all, said SciTech Daily.
Usually, land goes down under the weight of a lot of ice. But it goes up when the ice turns into water and runs into the sea. This change in weight on Earth pushes the North Pole to the side, explained LiveScience.
The moving North Pole can make it hard to record the movement of satellites (卫星) and spaceships, Kiandi Shahvandi, one of the scientists, told LiveScience. Often, to know where things are in space, it’s important to find north first. Scientists are now working hard to learn more about it.
50. What does the underlined word “melting” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Getting cold. B. Growing taller. C. Changing into snow. D. Turning into water.
51. According to the text, what is the main result of the North Pole’s movement?
A. It changes its weight on Earth. B. It causes the rising global temperature.
C. It speeds up the melting of ice in the Arctic. D. It makes it difficult to track satellites and spaceships.
52. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Scientists’ new discoveries. B. Ice in the North Pole melts fast.
C. Climate Change Moves the North Pole. D. The movement of satellites changes.

Have you seen the famous Disney movie Tangled about long-haired Princess Rapunzel?
Elsie Kennedy, 14, from Australia, loved Rapunzel very much, so she grew her hair down to her waist (腰) from childhood. However, her reason for keeping her long hair changed over time. She decided to donate it to make a wig (假发) for a child with cancer.
She got her first-ever haircut at her school in 2024. She later donated her hair to Wigs 4 Kids, a program run by Kids with Cancer Foundation in Australia.
“I’ve never had a real haircut.” Kennedy told Kids News. “I’m excited to get a new look, and I’m also very happy that my hair will go to a good cause.”
What’s more, Kennedy tried to raise money for other kids with cancer. To do that, she asked her school for help to get the money and let more students know about kids with cancer. That was the reason why she had her hair cut at the school.
Aiming to raise $14,000 (about 102,000 yuan), she had reached just over $11,000 by January 2025. “To know that my fundraising (筹集资金) will help kids and families going through a really hard time is amazing.” Kennedy said.

Then, he explained the reasons why bullying happens and how it affects the victims both physically and mentally. He also taught us practical ways to prevent bullying, like being kind to others and reporting any bullying behavior to teachers or parents immediately.
After attending this lecture, I realized the seriousness of school bullying. It made me more aware of the need to create a safe and friendly school environment. I hope such lectures can be held more often.
