Bob is our class pet. “Oh my,” said Ms. Cook. “Thanks for noticing, Kayla. Let’s organize a search.” “There are 24 of you. Divide into four groups. How many groups are there?” asked Ms. Cook. “Six,” Jason said. Each group searched a corner of the classroom No Bob. “Divide into groups of three,” said Ms. Cook. “How many groups are there?” “Eight,” said Amanda. We searched the hallway outside our classroom. Still no Bob. Amanda raised her hand. “What if someone finds him and thinks he’s dangerous?” “I suppose we could make posters so that everyone will look out for Bob,” said Ms. Cook. Ms. Cook asked Amanda to hand out paper while she wrote six words on the whiteboard: reward, harmless, gentle, return, smooth, and reptile (爬行动物). As she wrote, I saw her look at the notebook where she puts her lesson plans. “Be sure to use each word once and underline harmless ,” said Ms. Cook. When we finished writing our sentences, Ms. Cook asked, “Are the posters done?” Jessica raised her hand. “How will other people know what Bob looks like?” Ms. Cook passed out colored crayons. “Everyone, draw a picture of Bob on your poster. We’ll hang the posters on our way to lunch.” After lunch, Bob did not return. “It’s time for science,” said Ms. Cook. Maria raised her hand. “Where do snakes live when they’re not in terrariums?” “Why not visit the library?” suggested Ms. Cook. She divided the class into six groups. Each group read a science book about snakes. When we returned to class and gave a book report, Ms. Butler, the headmaster walked in. Bob was coiled around her arm. “Look what I found under my desk,” said Ms. Butler. Did Ms. Butler just wink at Ms. Cook? “We have time for writing. Everyone writes Ms. Butler a thank-you note,” Ms. Cook said after Ms. Butler left. “Double-check your spelling and grammar.” After the lesson, I said to Ms. Cook. “I think I know how Bob went missing.” “You do?” said Ms. Cook. “I think he had help,” I said. “Hmm,” said Ms. Cook. “Maybe a little.” “His disappearance made school interesting,” I said. “Thanks for the fun day.” Ms. Cook smiled. “And thank you, Detective Kayla.” 31. The poem presents a mother who sews clothes for her son by hand. Bathed in candlelight, she also worries about his travel away from home. Meng’s description of the mother shows the composition of the earliest form of the Chinese character “劳”. Found on oracle bones (甲骨) from over 3, 000 years ago, it was made up of two characters. There was “火 (fire)” on top and “衣 (clothes)” below, with three dots (点) that look like stitches. The lower part was later replaced by “力 (strength)” and a form symbolizing a house appeared above. The Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters explains the form as “When a house is on fire, it takes hard work to, put it out.” While the form of the character has been simplified, its meaning has spread to refer to work, labor (劳动) or toil. It is also connected with feelings like tiredness. Since ancient times, Chinese society has looked down upon those who sponge off others. In modern times, the idea that “labor is glorious (光荣的)” has taken root. People who work hard and make great contributions to their community or country are respected as model workers. Since the 1980s, “劳” has become one of the five key qualities that China's education system seeks to cultivate in students, along with “德 (virtue)” “智 (intelligence)” “体 (physical fitness)” and “美 (appreciation for beauty)”. Primary and middle school students typically have at least one hour of “labor class” each week for labor knowledge and skills. However, cognitive (认知的) labor and manual (体力的) labor are not always considered equal. As ancient Chinese philosopher Mencius said, “Those who labor with their minds govern (统治), while those who labor with their strength are governed.” Throughout history, many Chinese writers have had pity on people who worked hard to survive as poor farmers. In his poem Watching the Wheat Harvest, famous poet Bai Juyi expressed his shame at taking hundreds of kilograms of grain every year as his pay without doing any farm work. No matter it is cognitive labor or manual labor, overwork can have serious results, which can cause illness or even death. To avoid such things, people are encouraged to achieve a balance between work and rest. 34. Which of the following is the earliest form of the Chinese character “劳” ? A. B. C. D. 35. What does the underlined phrase “sponge off” in Paragraph 3 mean in the passage? A. depend on B. laugh at C. care about D. learn from 36. What can you learn from the passage? A. Cognitive labor is considered to be equal to manual labor. B. The character “劳” meant getting tired in the very beginning. C. Chinese students are expected to have the five key qualities. D. Bai Juyi took grain every year as his pay without doing any farm work. 37. The main purpose of this passage is to _________. A. discuss the different types of labor in China B explore the cultural meaning of labor in China C. introduce the history of the Chinese character “劳” D. compare ancient and modern Chinese literature works 【答案】34. The earliest straw-weaving (编织) works were found at Hemudu Cultural Ruins, a Neolithic cultural site in Zhejiang Province. This discovery means a lot to Chinese traditional culture. The Book of Rites also records that there were already mats (垫子) made of grass and professional straw-weaving craftsmen (工匠) during the Zhou dynasty. Straw weaving is a method of making daily items or artworks. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008. Wu explains the process of straw weaving: choosing from materials is the first step of a process that may take several weeks, or even months to complete. As the saying goes, “Many hands make light work.” There are several reasons why teamwork is so important. Firstly, in a team, everyone has different strengths and skills. By working together, we can combine our personal advantages. Moreover, dividing tasks among team members makes work easier, as everyone can focus on their strengths. I have an unforgettable teamwork experience during a basketball game. Our team was facing a strong team. At first, we played individually, trying to show off our own abilities. As a result, we fell behind. Realizing our mistake, we began to communicate with each other on the court. Gradually, we caught up and finally won the game. From this experience, I understand that only when we work as a team can we overcome difficulties. Each member’s effort is important. We should respect and make good use of the different ideas and talents within the team. In conclusion, teamwork truly has the power to achieve what we can’t do alone. [亮点词汇] ①combine our personal advantages结合我们的个人优势 ②focus on集中 ③show off炫耀 ④As a result因此 [高分句型] ①Realizing our mistake, we began to communicate with each other on the court.(现在分词作状语) ②From this experience, I understand that only when we work as a team can we overcome difficulties. How many groups are there?” asked Ms. Cook. “Six,” Jason said. Each group searched a corner of the classroom. No Bob. The Day Bob Went Missing D When it comes to Chinese literature works about a mother’s love, few can compete with Tang Dynasty poet Meng Jiao’s poem Song of the Travelling Son. A. Bai Juyi took grain every year as his pay without doing any farm work. 37. The main purpose of this passage is to _________.
