It looked exactly like our own house. Both of us love reading, so instead of taking boxes of books to a used book sale, we now place them in this little library near the street to share them with others. Over the past 15 years, thousands of books have been shared through our little library. Sometimes, people also leave DVDs and CDs. Our library is on a busy street near a subway station, so many people pass by every day. The library has become a special part of our neighborhood. One man often takes books from our library to share with people at a nearby old people’s home. Other people have left us cards, chocolates, and even a drawing from a local artist to show their thanks. The books in our library show the diversity of our city. Most books are in English, but we also often see Arabic, French, and Russian books. I even keep some books in languages I don’t understand because I enjoy collecting different ones. Interestingly, the library hasn’t helped us reduce the number of books in our home—we now have more books than ever! Some people think Little Free Libraries compete with bookstores. But for us, this hasn’t been true. We still buy books and use the bookstores often. The difference is our Little Free Library has connected us to book lovers and helped us share the joy of reading in our busy neighborhood. 39. What is the Little Free Library according to the text? A. A small house for sharing books. B. The writer’s new house to live in. C. A big market to read and sell books. D. A library for old people in the city. 40. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. Things readers forget to take away. B. Ways to pay for the books in the library. C. People’s love for the special library. D. The writer’s opinion on local people. 41. What is the meaning of the underlined word “diversity” in the text? A. Things that are almost the same. B. Experiences from the past. C. Something that looks very nice. D. Many kinds of cultures or ideas. 42. What is probably the writer’s attitude (态度) towards bookstores? A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Disappointed. D. Unclear. 【答案】39. A 40. C 41. D 42. 根据第一段“My husband built a small two-floor house for our Little Free Library… we now place them in this little library near the street to share them with others”可知,“小免费图书馆”是用于分享书籍的小房子。故选A。 根据第四段 “most books are in English, but we also often see Arabic, French, and Russian books”可知,大多数书是英语的,但也经常看到阿拉伯语、法语和俄语的书,说明书籍包含多种语言,体现了文化的多样性;据此可以推断,划线单词“diversity”的意思是“多样性,多样化”。故选D。 【42题详解】 观点态度题。根据最后一段“We still buy books and use the bookstores often”可知,作者夫妇仍经常光顾书店;据此可以,作者对书店的态度是支持的。故选B。 C The water cycle starts when the sun heats ocean water. Tate sun changes the water into water vapor (蒸气). The sun and wind cause the water vapor to rise into the air: Water vapor cools off in the atmosphere (大气层). Then it changes to drops of water. The drops then hold together to form a cloud. The water in the cloud falls as rain or snow. It may fall back into the ocean, or it may fall on land. If it falls on land, it finally works its way back to the ocean as a water overflow called runoff. As you begin your experiment, remember this amazing fact. The amount of water on Earth now is the same as it was in the past and will be in the future. About 71% of Earth’s surface is water. This includes not only the water in oceans, rivers, and lakes. It also includes the water in clouds, rain, snow, and groundwater and in the icy areas at the North and South Poles. 43. In which part does “runoff” (in paragraph 2) appear in the picture? A. A B. B C. C D. D 44. What can we infer from the passage? A. Water vapor goes into the air only because of the sun. B. Water vapor changes to drops of water in the atmosphere. C. The water in clouds, rain, snow is not a part of the water cycle. D. The water on Earth is more than the water in oceans, rivers and lakes. 45. From which is the passage most probably taken? A. Usually considered a friendly animal, many believe the sea lion went crazy because it was poisoned (毒害) by algae (海藻). The “criminal” is a kind of poison from a harmful algae. According to the US National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries), more than 100 calls are made every day reporting sea lions and dolphins influenced by this poison. John Warner, CEO of the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles, told the BBC that these animals don’t really attack people. “These animals are reacting to the fact that they are sick,” he said. The harmful algae grows fast when deep ocean water moves up to the surface. This brings nutrients (营养) that help the algae grow. Fish eat the algae and get the poison, and when dolphins and sea lions eat those fish, they get sick. However, according to NOAA Fisheries, the harmful algae showed up earlier than usual. Climate change is a big reason for this, noted The Guardian. Warmer weather and changing ocean conditions make it easier for the algae to grow. Moreover, some scientists also think wildfires in Los Angeles might play a role. Large wildfires have caused the ocean near the beach to have more nutrients. 46. Why does the story begin with a girl being attacked by a sea lion? A. To explain what to do in such situations. B. To warn people to stay away from sea lions. C. To criticize humans for polluting the ocean. D. To show how poison can make sea lions act dangerously. 47. What can we learn from the US NOAA Fisheries? A. Many sea lions are affected by poison. B. The poison only affects sea lions and dolphins. C. The harmful algae are being dealt with. D. Scientists found a new poison from algae. 48. How does climate change affect the outbreaks of the harmful algae? A. It makes them grow deeper underwater. B. It causes genetic changes in the algae. C. It decreases nutrients in the water. D. It causes the algae to appear earlier. 49. What can be predicted about sea animals in California, according to the passage? A. They may continue to face health problems. B. They may cause climate change to be worse. C. They may stop eating the algae very soon. D. They may grow healthier as the ocean gets warmer. 【答案】46. D 47. A 48. D 49. Climate change is a big reason for this, noted The Guardian. Warmer weather and changing ocean conditions make it easier for the algae to grow.”可知,气候变化导致有害藻类比往常更早出现,因为温暖的天气和变化的海洋条件使藻类更容易生长。故选D。 【49题详解】 推理判断题。根据“Fish eat the algae and get the poison, and when dolphins and sea lions eat those fish, they get sick.”以及“Warmer weather and changing ocean conditions make it easier for the algae to grow.”可知,藻类生长更容易,鱼类会吃藻类中毒,海狮等吃了中毒的鱼也会生病,所以可以预测加利福尼亚的海洋动物可能会继续面临健康问题。故选A。 E The population of tigers in India has doubled over 12 years, according to a government report. The big cats’ numbers rose from 1,706 tigers in 2010 to 3,682 in 2022. This means that about 75% of the world’s tigers now live in the country. In India, tigers have disappeared from some areas as humans have cut down forests and other natural lands in order to build cities, homes, and farms. Today, tigers in India share 45% of their habitat (栖息地) with about 60 million people. This has brought the animals closer to human areas in search of food, which has led to fights between the people and the big cats. Since 1973, the Indian government has been working to save the animals through a program called Project Tiger. It has created strong laws and increased the number of tiger protected areas from nine to more than 50 all over the country. Conservation organizations (保护组织) have also been working to protect habitats, support tiger populations, and help people live peacefully alongside tigers. This includes educating people about the animals and providing money for farmers whose animals are killed by the big cats. Researchers said the results showed that conservation can do good to both animals and people and that the two can live successfully even when they live close together. “What the research shows is that it's not the human population, but the attitude (态度) of people, that matters more,” said Yadvendradev V. Jhala, the study’s lead author. 50. What’s the number of tigers living in the world now? A. 1,706. B. About 2000. C. 3,682. D. About 4900. 51. What do conservation organizations do to protect tigers? A. Make laws. B. Build farmhouses. C. Educate people. D. Increase protected areas. 52. What is the best title for the text? A. Tigers are growing fast in India B. Wildlife protection projects in India C. Tigers are disappearing in the world D. Wildlife protection organizations in the world 【答案】50. D 51. C 52. D. Unclear. C The water cycle starts when the sun heats ocean water. A. A storybook. B. A book review. C. A science magazine. D. A tourist guide. D “Please don’t kill me.” This is what a girl said recently when she was attacked by a sea lion in California, US. Usually considered a friendly animal, many believe the sea lion went crazy because it was poisoned (毒害) by algae (海藻). The “criminal” is a kind of poison from a harmful algae. 46. E The population of tigers in India has doubled over 12 years according to a government report. The young man used to live with his parents. He was bored with his parents nagging(唠叨) for every little thing he did at home. His mother asked him to make his bed, or check if the tap was turned off properly. His father asked him to turn off fan or light before he leaves. He wanted to leave his parents after he started working. While waiting for the interview, he saw that the light in the office was still on and it was ten o’clock in the morning. He turned it off. Then he saw that water was dripping from the water cooler at the office. He then went to turn off the tap properly. The young man’s turn came. After looking at his file, the interviewer asked, “When can you come to work?” The young man was surprised. Looking at his face, the interviewer said, “Today, in interviews, no one was asked anything. We noticed everyone’s behavior. Everyone came but no one turned off the tap or light. You have good values and habits.” After the interview was over, the young man reached home and hugged his mom and dad.
