For writers in Western cultures, fall is a difficult season to describe. On the one hand. it is the
英语试题 第3页(共11页)
end of the summer, and therefore can make people a little sad. The days get shorter, and when you
wake up in the morning, there's fog and it's cooler: Winter is coming
American writer Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book A Moveable Feast, "You expected to
be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches
(枝) were bare (光秃秃的) against the wind and the cold, wntry light."
On the other hand, fall has its good side. There are many changes in nature at this time of year
such as the reds and browns that the leaves change to, and the way they fall from the trees. French
writer Albert Camus even thought fall was a second spring, "Autumn is a second spring when every
leaf is a flower." It's a view you can also find in the most famous fall poem in English literature To
Autunn by John K.eats. In that poem Keats says that fall has its songs just like spring.
Another good side about fall is wisdom(智 慧). The arrival of the season is thought to be
simitar to a person becoming mature(成熟的). Their best time may have been and gone, but old age
has not yet come. At this time it's thought that people have learned a thing or two about life.
Of course, there are many other ideas in fall writing. For exarnple, it's the beginning of a new
term of the school year. As you would expect, fall is found in writing for children and young people
But fall writing usually focuses on the changes in nature that we see, which writers often use as a
symbol for changes in human life
26. Why is autumn considered sad according to Hemingway?
A. It is the beginning of winter.
B People feel lonely as days are shorter
C. Nature is less beautiful because of the fog.
D. The falling leaves means a part of life dying
27. Who expressed the good side of fall in his work?
B. Albert Camus.
C. John Keats
A. Ernest Hemingway.
D. Both B andC.
28. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Fall and spring are the same.
B. Fall may help people think about the meaning of life.
C. Children and young people just want to write about fall
D. Fall writing only cares about the chnges in nature.
29. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Autumn in literature.
B. Changes in nature
C. Wonders in the best season
D. Writers in Western cultures.
30. What would be the possible structure of the passage?
C. ②③④/
B. ①/②/③④
A. ①②/③④/
D.①/②③/④
A hundred years ago, it was drfficult for people to communicate over long distances. Messages
to far-off places were carried on horseback. Then Samuel Morse invented the electrie telegraph(电
报)and the code(编码)it uses. The electric telegraph could send messages using electricity. The
operator at one end used a machine to tap out a special code for each letter of the alphabet(字母表)
The system changed the tapping into electrical impulses(电 子脉冲) and sent them across electric

wires to their destination. These impulses were changed back into the code at the destination. The
code was printed on a paper tape attached to another machine. The operator on the receiving end
used the code to change the message back into words. Later, operators learned to translate the code
just by listening
The First telegraph message was sent in the United States in 1844, Canada followed in 1846
Morse code is a series of dots and dashes. The dashes are about three times longer than the dots

The Morse code also includes codes for numbers and punctuation signs. Like texting, it also has
groups of letters that stand for phrases. For example, the letters CUL stand for'see you later." And
the famous SOS distress signal stands for"'save our souls. " Messages can be sent by Morse code
using light too. A flashing light can send the same dots and dashes and they can be translated by
someone watching
How is Morse code used today? Today Morse code is used mostly by amateur radio operators
Contests are held all over the world where these operators can show their skills in using Morse code
Some navigation beacons(导航信标) still identify themselves using Morse code. Pilots flying planes
by instrument use these beacons to determine their plane's location. But perhaps the most exciting
use of Morse code is helping people with disabilities communicate. There have been cases in which
people have learned to communicate using their eyelids to blink messages using Morse code. Or they
have used a finger to tap out messages.

The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alplrabet. it uses
characters which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together
different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the
most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important role in the development of
Chinese culture, At first, ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian symbols existed(存 在), but only
Chinese characters remain today. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking a
how these characters developed
Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named
Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of
animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea
that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were
drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified(简 化) and others have beer
made more difficult over time
However, as a whole. the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The
character for a mountain was at first three mountamtops together. This became one mountaintop and
three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays
Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by combining two or more characters
together. For example, "rat" was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character
“prisoner" was formed with a "man" inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions
and numbers. It is easy to distinguish( 区 别) their meanings by
looking at them, for example, the characters for "up" and "down".
which are opposites of each other
Though these kinds of characters indicate meanngs, one of their shortcomings is that they dc
ret show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a method was developed to have one part of
character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters
used today were made this way.
In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope tc
make learning to read and write more understandable to the general population, which would
increase literacy(读 写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China's
mainland.
