What would happen next?
(1)词数少于120的, 酌情扣分;
(2)书写较差以致影响交际的, 酌情扣分;

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
→David, a student with brain disease, prepared himself for the big cross-country run at school.
→On the spot of the event, David was ready to give up the race.
→The author searched the crowd for the school coach.
→The author finally found out the reason why David wanted to give up and found David approaching him.
David:
(David had not missed a single practice; his usual toothy smile)
(David was standing by himself off to the side by fence; I turned to find him coming towards me.)
Author:
(I looked around and finally spotted David.)
(I bit back my frustration.)
(I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach.)
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I whispered gently, “No one can change you, except yourself. If you resolve to rise to the challenge, just follow your inner voice.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have been preparing for this event, which is why you are here now.” I continued. Hearing my words, David’s face lighted up and he nodded his head with a determined look. Learning about David’s decision, his coach gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started with the gun fired. It seemed that the runaway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child like David. However, David kept running unsteadily, though he was tripped over now and then. Classmates all gathered along the track, yelling “Come on! You can make it!”. Along with waves of encouragement, David finally made it to the finish line although he was the last one, which became less important. It was his bravery and determination that really counted.
Passage 1
Ray was there to pick me up for the three-hour drive back home. That was how I came to know his story. As the father of two, he spent six days a week driving in a town far away from home. On his only day off, he drove five hours there and back to have time with his family in Preston.
“Leaving the kids is hard,” Ray smiled gently.
I smiled, too. I remembered my dad and I eagerly talked on the phone about daily things when he worked away for weeks.
After two hours into our drive when a tall sign saying Preston came into our sight, I asked if it was where his family lived. “Yes, about 5 kilometers down the road,” Ray looked out in the right direction.
My heart hurt. Then I decided to give the family a gift, even if it just would be my time.
“Why don’t we stop and say hello?” I suggested.
I met Ray’s inquiring (询问的) eyes like I was joking.I nodded to him and said “Yes”.Then, we drove off the main road.

Passage 2
Old Lily and her husband Jim would go to a local park with their lively and cheerful dog, Bruno. The dog loved going there to play Frisbee(飞盘).
One summer month, the couple noticed a sad little boy appeared seemingly out of nowhere each dusk to sit at the same spot in the park. The boy wore an oversized hat that always covered his face. He always seemed quiet and sad. And he would appear just before dusk, sitting for some time. As it got totally dark, an old lady would come for him, after which they’d leave the park together.
After noticing the boy the seventh time, Lily's heart went out to him. “I wonder what his story is,” Lily said that dusk, when watching that old lady lead the boy away again. The next day, she secretly approached the boy and recognized him. She turned back and told Jim, “It’s the boy always playing Frisbee with his father every day months ago. He got scared when Bruno tried to catch his Frisbee.” “Oh, that kid. He was so scared that Bruno was running towards him,” Jim laughed. “I wonder why he no longer plays with his father,” Lily added.
The following day in the park, she walked to the boy and the old lady who often led him away. The boy recognized Lily and looked around for her dog. “It's okay. Bruno isn't with me today,” she said. Then she asked the old lady why the boy was always sitting sad and lonely.
“I’m his grandma,” the lady replied. “His parents died in an accident. His name is Roy.” “He used to be so happy, playing Frisbee with his father on that spot every dusk,” Lily said, feeling sorry for him. The next day before dusk, Lily headed to the park with some pies and her dog, wishing to entertain and comfort Roy by the food and especially her cheerful dog.

Passage 3
A man came to a restaurant one evening to have a meal. The restaurant owner struck up a conversation with him and learned that he was saving money to bring his family to the city for a chance at a better life. He had recently arrived in the city and found work at a nearby scrap metal(废弃金属) site. This meal at the restaurant was going to be his only meal of the day, and he could only afford to spend a few cents. Touched by his story, the restaurant owner took his order, informing him that it would cost 50 cents.
Several years passed, and the man continued to visit the restaurant every evening to have his one meal of the day and chat with the restaurant owner, who always encouraged him and asked about family, and how his plans were going.
Finally, one evening, the man arrived at the restaurant with a happy smile on his face. He had bought an average-sized house in a good neighborhood with a good school for his boys, and he had just sent for his family to join him in the city. The restaurant owner was overjoyed for him and congratulated him. The man then mentioned that he wanted to spend an entire 5 dollars on his meal for celebration that evenin. The restaurant owner agreed that it was well-deserved(应得的), prepared his meal, put it in a box and sent him on his way home.
However, when the man got home and opened his meal package, he was shocked to find the same type of food he had been eating every day for the past six years. He felt deeply disappointed because he had been looking forward to a big and tasty meal to celebrate his big achievement. He was mad at the restaurant owner and felt robbed(掠夺) of his money and his celebration. He felt he had been cheated by his very good friend.

Passage 4
Amy and Beth were waiting for their mom, Mrs. March, to have a Christmas breakfast.
“Merry Christmas, little daughters! But I want to say one word before we sit down. Not far away from here lies a poor woman with a little newborn baby. Six children were suffering freezing cold and hunger, for they have no fire and nothing to eat over there. My girls, will you them your breakfast as a Christmas present?”
They were rather hungry, having waited nearly an hour, and for a minute no one spoke. Suddenly, Amy shouted, “I’m so glad you came before we began!” “May I go and help carry the things to the poor little children?” asked Beth eagerly. “I shall take the cream and the muffins(松油饼),” added Amy, heroically giving up the food she most liked. Beth was putting the bread into one big plate.
“I thought you’d do it,” said Mrs. March, smiling as if satisfied. “You two shall go and help me, and when we come back we will have some bread and milk for breakfast, and make it up at dinnertime.”
They were soon ready, and the group set out. It was early and few people were walking on the street. They went through back streets and arrived at the destination.
A poor, simple, terrible room it was, with broken windows, no fire. A sick mother, a crying baby and a group of pale, hungry children were hiding under the old bedclothes, trying to keep warm.
How the big eyes stared as the group went in, with a basket of Christmas articles.
“Oh, my God! Here come good angels!” said the poor woman, crying for joy.

Passage 5
Every October, my neighbor Ollie and I would enter the Halloween costume contest(服装比赛) in our neighborhood park. And each year the theme was different, such as “Superheroes” or “Far m Animals”. But this year’s theme was not so specific. It was just “Be Creative”.
Walking home along the road lined with tall trees, the two of us had a heated discussion about what “Be Creative” meant. We looked back on the themes we had really enjoyed. For “Superheroes”, we made costumes of Super-Force Flying Eagle. And for “Farm Animals”, we were dressed as a cow and a horse. Ollie even put a pair of wings for the horse, saying that he’d love to see a “flying horse” eating grass with a cow on the farm.
“Now that’s the creative spirit we need for this challenge!” I said. “Maybe, since we don’t know exactly what we want to be yet, we should start by choosing some cool costume-making materials.”
Just at that moment, a falling golden leaf happened to have landed on Ollie’s shoulder. “I’ve got it!” Ollie said joyfully, picking up some fallen leaves from the ground. “We can make costumes out of leaves and pretend to be trees. I can ensure, no one will be a tree as great as me.”
“Oh, that’s wonderful!” I said. “I like your creative idea and I have just got a perfect way to be another tree.”
We filled up two bags with different kinds of leaves: Ollie’s grandma, Abuela, an experienced tailor (裁缝), helped us with tons of excellent costume-making supplies and we started to work. When we were done, we each tried on the self-designed costumes and they were really wonderful. On the morning of the contest, we got up early and spent hours making preparations. We arrived at the park early and waited for our turn nervously and eagerly.

Passage 6
When my mom announced that my dad had fixed the old car in his garage, I felt excited—I had wheels! I called my friend Steph and made plans to have dinner at her house the next day.
The following morning, I woke up early and put on a black skirt and jacket. “Aren’t you dressed too lightly?” Mom asked. “There’s a snowstorm coming.” “I’ll be inside,” I replied as I headed out.
As I began the forty-minute drive, I was in high spirits. However, halfway there it started to snow like mad. Cars slowed. The sound of a siren announced the approach of an ambulance and I pulled aside to let it pass. As I inched back into my lane, the traffic light ahead turned red. I stopped.
When the light turned green, I pressed on the gas, but the old car died. I tried to start it. One click, then nothing. Before I could do anything else, two young men raced over from the nearby sidewalk. I rolled down my window a little.
“Give us a second,” one of them said, “We’ll help you out of here.” Soon, they began pushing the car. With their guidance, I steered into a parking spot in front of a grocery store. “You’ll be fine now,” they said, and before I could even thank them, they walked into the grocery store.
The snow was falling faster now. I called Steph on my cellphone to cancel our plan. Next, I called my parents to come and get me. Now all I had to do was wait, but I was very hungry and cold. I sighed, regretting not taking my mom’s advice.
Just as I sat waiting in the car, I noticed a man walking towards me. It was one of the men who had just helped me. I rolled down the window at once.

Passage 7
Most boys coming to our ranch(大牧场) were living around animals for the first time. Sent by educational systems, they were boys in trouble; they had no family, lacked love, often broke the rules, and were lonely. Our ranch created a “boy-horse communication program” for them, hoping to heal their broken spirits and help them behave well through their communication with horses. I was the program’s head.
15-year-old Martin was a new arrival. He appeared cold and easily angry and had no experience with horses. He seemed to consider a horse only a vehicle for speed and thrills. He always pushed his way to the front of the line every day, knocking down smaller children to get on the horse. And then he started moving fast. We tried to communicate with him, but he only cared about his excitement.
One morning, when I was upset about Martin’s behavior in my office, one worker told me that a female horse was ill. Then, I ran to its stable(马厩), and within an hour she was dead. We felt sad about her and also concerned about the young baby she had recently delivered(分娩). The baby horse’s first need was to be fed.
We prepared some milk in a bottle and offered it to her. But she wouldn’t accept the bottle. We had to put our hands in the milk and let her suck(吮吸) the milk off our fingers. It was a painfully slow method of feeding, but we had no choice if we wanted the baby horse to survive.
At that moment, Martin finished his daily riding and found us. Pushing his way through the crowd of kids who were watching us feed the baby horse, he got to the front, shouting, “I want to feed it!”
After I showed Martin how to do it, he put his hand in the milk and then put his fingers towards the horse’s mouth. When the baby horse closed her mouth around his fingers, Martin was surprised and drew back, shouting, “Hey, it bit me!” But knowing the little horse wanted more food, he immediately re-wet his hand.
And he gently put his fingers near her mouth.

Passage 8
When the telephone rang in the police station that day, no one there imagined they would receive an unusual call. Most calls reported illegal actions or emergencies, but this one was quite different.
“Hello,” a woman said in a weak voice. “I wonder if you can help me. I can’t leave the house, and I haven’t eaten for three days.” The operator was surprised but he asked for her name and address, and soon two police officers, Steve and Garret, were sent to deal with the case.
To their surprise, the address took them to a beautiful house with a big garden in a pricey neighborhood. Steve and Garret began to think the call might be a trick. With doubts, they rang the doorbell. After quite a while, a tiny old woman opened the door, with a bandage(绷带) roughly wrapped around her left arm.
Later, they knew the woman called Hilda Ross fell off a ladder(梯子) and that her left arm was injured. When asked why she didn’t go to the hospital, she said, “It’s just a sprain(扭伤). The only problem is that it hurts so much that I can hardly walk to the store to buy food. I didn’t ask neighbors for help since I just moved in weeks ago, neither knowing anyone nor having any friends here. My son David lives with me, but he’s on a business trip and won’t be back soon. So I had to look after myself. I didn’t tell my son about my situation because he just started a new job. I didn’t want to worry him.”
Clearly, Mrs Ross was very weak. So Steve and Garret offered to drive her to the hospital, but she refused, saying she didn’t want to trouble them so much and that she just hoped they could help her get some food with her money. However, they insisted on taking her to the hospital.

Passage 9
John woke up on his big day, excited to go to school and see his friends of his music club. He went to the kitchen and his mother had made his favorite cake, and she had already lit the candles. The teenager blew out the candles. “Happy Birthday, my boy. I hope you have the best day ever,” his mom said with the biggest smile. His dad patted his back gently.
John was about to leave when they stopped him. “Wait a minute! We have something special for you!” his mother announced and took out a box, which they had been hiding for a few weeks in the kitchen.
John's eyebrows rose in surprise. Gifts in his home were rare because they had a tight budget. However, this gift was a big surprise because the box looked like one of his favorite brands(品牌). He screamed, “MOM! DAD! Are you serious?”
“Congratulations, baby!” John’s mom said. “Now, I tell you the truth. It is not new at all. I found it from Mr. Green's second-hand shop, but it looks pretty new, right?”
“I don't care where it came from, Mom. It is amazing! Thank you so much!” he assured her. “I can't wait to show it off in my club!”
In the afternoon, John showed off his guitar to his friends. Brandon, one of the band members, saw the back of the guitar. “Hey, man. There’s something written here,” he said. John grabbed the guitar and saw a line of words on the back. It read: “To my dearest boy.”
“Your mom wrote that?” said Brandon.
“No, this is not my mom's handwriting.” John shook his head, “it must be from the old owner.”
“It is a good one,” Brandon murmured, “its old owner must be a good player.”
On the way home from school, Tom passed by Mr. Green’s store. Out of curiosity, he went in and asked around. The old man said, “Oh, it was brought in by Carl last month. He looked in urgent need of money that day. He lives nearby and I know his address.”
注意:1.续写词数应为80左右;
John walked out of the store and headed for Carl’s home.

Passage 10
Milo is a rescue dog, adopted by twenty-year-old Mary Swift. But the dog is also a rescuer.
One morning in November 2021, Swift was ready to go jogging as usual, with Milo following her happily. To her surprise, as soon as she opened the front door, Milo took off running towards the gate quickly. It was very unusual. He always ran after his master.
Outside the gate, Milo was looking around the neighborhood, looking a little alert. Suddenly, he ran straightly to the house across the street, barking loudly and sniffing around. He seemed unsatisfied with this house. He quickly ran to the one next door. He stopped there and turned to Swift, barking more loudly, with his tail swinging crazily. Swift followed him, shouting sharply “Stop, Milo!” Some passing neighbors were looking disapprovingly(不满地) at them.
Swift was kind of embarrassed. Not everyone wanted a strange dog on their property and liked hearing a dog’s barks in the quiet morning. She tried to get Milo to go back, but Milo seemed not to follow the master’s order. He started to scratch on the front door. Swift wondered, “Why is he trying to break into the house?” She looked at the house, which belonged to Sherry Starr, who was 85 years old and seldom walked out of her house. It was the time for her to trim her bushes in the garden. Somehow, she wasn’t there that day.
Although Swift was a little doubtful, she still tried to drag Milo away. But at this time she could hear a sound coming through an open upstairs window.

Passage 11
“Jane, hurry and get your coat. We’re going to the store,” Dad said. I ran to do as my father instructed. A shopping trip with Dad was a rare experience. He traveled a great deal of time, and I valued the unexpected chance to be alone with him. Once in the car, I asked, “Where are we going?” Dad only smiled, “You’ll see.” To my surprise, we didn’t take the usual turn to the area’s one department store.
Instead, we turned down an alley(小巷) where small houses lined the road. Dad parked the car, got out, and walked to the front door of the first house on the street. Within a few minutes, he returned with Connor, a boy from our school. I tried to hide my disappointment. I had wanted my father to accompany me. At that time, it looked as though I would have to share him with someone else. “Hi, Connor,” I said, only just able to keep the upset and unhappiness from my voice.
“Hi,” he replied. He looked as uncomfortable as I felt. Then, Dad drove to the store. Once inside, he led us to the boys’ clothing section. I was much unhappier. Not only did I have to share my dad, but I also had to look at boring clothes. “Connor will give a poem-reading performance in your school’s 40th anniversary celebration next Friday,” Dad said. “He’ll need a suit to wear for this big occasion. So we’re here.” Connor looked with wonder at the row of clothes.

Passage 12
The Bridge
Once upon a time two brothers who lived on neighboring farms fell into conflict(冲突). It was the first serious quarrel in 40 years of farming side by side. They had been sharing machinery, trading a labor and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long partnership fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference which exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
One morning there was a knock on elder brother’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s(木匠) toolbox. “I am looking for a few days of work”, he said. “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you?”
“Yes!” said the elder brother. “I do have a job for you. Look across the stream at that farm. That’s my neighbor, in fact, it’s my younger brother and we don’t get along. Last week he dug a wider passage for water into his farm. But he ended up creating a very wide stream in between our farms and I am sure he did it just to annoy me. I want you to build me something so that we don’t have to stand and see each other’s face from across.”
The carpenter said “I think I understand the situation. I will be able to do a job that will please you.” The elder brother had to go to town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing. At sunset, he had just finished his job. When the elder brother returned, his eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped after seeing the work.
It was a fine bridge stretching from one side of the stream to the other!

Passage 13
She came into my life when I was seven years old. My dad found her at work. She was wandering and starving. He took one look at her, and said, “Seems like you could use a good home.” He opened up the door to his truck and she jumped in. Her tail wagged(摇动) all the way.
I was still at school when dad arrived home with the puppy. Mom and dad fed her and gave her a bath. This would be my first pet.
I had always wanted a dog. My parents told me when I was old enough and responsible, I could have one. Well, I guess they figured the time was right.
When I walked back home, a white and black puppy with a red bow stuck to her head greeted me with many many puppy kisses. A wild joy took hold of me and a very special friendship was born that day.
Now she needed a name. My older brother laughed at her and said her tail didn’t wag back and forth like others, but went in a circle. He moved his finger around his ear, and said, “She’s squirrely”. Thus my puppy got her name, Squirrely.

Passage 14
Sweat poured down Marquez’s face. He was preparing for a basketball game and he would win. That was a pretty sure thing. After all, he wasn’t just good; he was excellent.
Basketball was a way of life in Marquez’s family. His older brother Reggie was now playing at a top college. Marquez was ready to follow in his brother’s footsteps and make his family proud. But he had a secret. As good as he was at basketball, Marquez’s heart wasn’t in it anymore. He had another sport on his mind.
Wiping the sweat from his forehead(额头), Marquez jumped on a bus heading home. Through the bus window, he could see cheerleaders dancing and performing amazingly on the field. Marquez was attracted. He pulled out a sheet from his bookbag. Across the top in big block letters was the phrase: Cheerleading Competition(啦啦队比赛). That’s what Marquez really wanted to do. He longed for a new challenge.
Although it is accepted that cheerleading was girly, Marquez knew the meaning of cheerleading for a game. He also knew that cheerleading wouldn’t just be a physical challenge; it would be an emotional one, too.
Now, he knew it was time for him to tell his family.
As soon as he arrived home, his parents and Reggie were at the door. Marquez’s face grew bright as he hugged Reggie. “You’re home?” “Of course, little man. I planned to come to your game. You’re going to be a better player than me!”
Everyone in the family was smiling…except Marquez. His family had such high expectations for him when it came to basketball. But Marquez was tired of trying to keep up with his brother. He was ready to carve his own path. He wanted to tell his parents, but Reggie being there put much more pressure on him.

Passage 15
A week before New Year's Day, the phone rang. "Maggie ran off, and I can't find her, "my husband, Jerry, said in an anxious voice. He'd driven to the town park with our dog, Maggie. “Why'd she run away?” I asked. “A smaller dog scared her, and she took off over the footbridge.” Maggie was eleven years old, overweight, and afraid of her own shadow. I asked Jerry to find her before she ran too far away. Our daughter overheard my end of the conversation. Jennifer often played upon the couch with Maggie. "Maggie's lost? Tell Dad I'll help him look for her. "She flew out of the door.
At first, Maggie's tracks were easy to follow because a couple of inches of snow covered the ground. But her prints stopped at the parking lot where the snow had melted. My husband and Jennifer searched for hours into the night. Before leaving the park, Jerry hung his jacket on the branch of a tree and placed Maggie's bed below it. He hoped the wind would carry his scent and Maggie would find her way back. But there was no sign of her the next day. Jennifer made dyers and handed them out to houses around the park. We posted Maggie's photo on all the "Lost Dog" sites and social media. Friends and family promised to keep an eye out for her.
The third day, I waited at home for calls and contacted M&M Pet Rescue. They offered to help. But there was no sign, and we were all worried. Jerry and Jennifer went door-to-door with Moggie’s picture, asking if anyone had seen her. Soon Maggie's story spread through the whole community.

What would happen next?

(1)词数少于120的, 酌情扣分;
(2)书写较差以致影响交际的, 酌情扣分;

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Soon, we came to a small house in a village. Hearing the sound of our car horn, the two children ran merrily out of a house with a s mall yard. When suddenly seeing Ray, they shouted “Daddy”in surprise. Ray stepped forward, crouched down, cradled the children in his arms, and took turns kissing their little faces. At this time, a beautiful middle-aged woman dressed in plain clothes came out smilingly. Ray stood up, silently and affectionately stared at her for a moment, and then walked toward the house with his wife, holding a child in each hand. After seeing this sweet scene through the window of my car, I decided to drive home by myself. On the return trip two days later, I would pick up Ray in Preston and return to the town where we worked.

Not giving up, Bruno jumped on Roy and started licking him all over. It led to a smile from the boy, but he was still upset. However, Bruno finally encouraged Roy to play with it. And Roy laughed a lot. After Roy and Bruno played for a long time, Lily invited Roy to join her and his grandma for food. Bruno remained by Roy’s side. Roy shared food with it. It was obvious that they liked each other. “It’s been some time since I saw him laugh. Thank you,” Roy’s grandma said. Lily just replied with a smile. Since then, Lily visited the park with Bruno every day, looking for Roy to play with Bruno.

Filled with anger and disappointment, the man went back to the restaurant. “Where is your boss?” he stormed in and growled. At that moment, a waiter came out from the kitchen, handing a customer a takeout and cheerfully saying, “Five dollars. Have a nice day.” The man saw the familiar 50-cent meal that he’d been eating for the past 6 years. He suddenly understood. The restaurant owner had supported him selflessly during his toughest times. As the restaurant owner appeared, his face flushed with embarrassment. The restaurant owner showed an understanding smile, gently patted him on the shoulder and broke the silence, “Hope you enjoy your meal!” Hearing this, the man hugged the restaurant owner tightly. With tears streaming down his face, he felt his heart was about to burst with warmth and gratitude.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
And he gently put his fingers near her mouth. The baby horse leant close to him, and Martin smiled, feeling the warmth he had never felt before. For the first time, he realized how much joy he could find in caring for another living being. I could see something changed in Martin’s eyes. Watching the horse sleep, Martin cried, “I’ll be her mom and care for her.” From that day on, Martin made it his mission to care for the baby horse. As he did, he felt his anger and sadness slowly melting away. He became more empathetic, more patient, and more connected to the world around him. As we watched Martin’s transformation unfold, we knew that our “boy-horse communication program” had done its job. That was the true power of the ranch — not just to help boys in trouble, but to heal their spirits and give them hope for the future.

One possible version:
Dad must have noticed my unhappiness. So he drew me aside. “We have a chance to help someone in need,” he said quietly. After his continual encouragement, I realized I had done something wrong and was ashamed of my childish behavior. Connor came from a poor family where his parents worked hard to provide for their four children. I guessed that suit had no place in the budget. Eventually, I decided to support Dad’s care for Connor, helping Connor pick up clothing. I even decided to cheer him on when watching his poem reading performance. Knowing my change, Dad joyfully patted my head and I felt really good.

Passage 12

One possible version:
Squirrely was a smart dog and brought me much joy. Every time she saw me, she would greet me with many gentle kisses, wagging her tail in circles. After school, I would walk her in the neighborhood, running, talking and laughing. When I gave her a bath, she would stare at me and kiss my hands gently, as if to say:“Thank you, my friend!”Also, I fed her and taught her to play hide and seek. With time passing by, we spent our days learning and growing together.
However, arthritis(关节炎) hit my best friend when she was 12. She seemed so painful and could barely walk. I carried her to see the vet in a hurry, but was told there was no special treatment for the disease caused by old age. Seeing her suffering so much, I felt heart-broken. All I could do was to accompany her all the time. Three weeks later, she left me quietly. I buried her in the yard, where we had a lot of fun. I knew my good friend would be with me always.

However, Marquez knew what had to be done. “I don’t think I want to play ball anymore,” he announced. “I want to do something else.” The family stood confused. “Like what, son?” his father said, breaking the silence. “Cheerleading,” Marquez replied. Nervous, unbelievable laughter followed that word. They thought he was joking. “That’s what I really want to do.” Marquez said in a voice that came out louder than expected. When they saw he was serious, they were quiet.
Over the next few weeks, his family began to understand and support him for the big event. Over weeks of training, he could see that he was improving with practice. Maybe he even stood a shot at making the competition. A week later, it was time for the competition. From the sidelines, dad, mom, Reggie cheered Marquez on. As the music played, he hit every beat the best he could. The following Monday, results for the competition were posted. Marquez saw his name at the top of the list. He made it—of course he did. This time, he felt proud of himself.

The fourth day, a lot of people reached out to help look for Maggie. Our neighbors, friends, and even perfect strangers offered to join the search. We formed search parties and carefully combed the park, calling out Maggie’s name and hoping for a response. As hours passed, our search efforts seemed to be in vain. We were starting to lose hope, when suddenly the phone rang. It was a woman who claimed to have spotted Maggie near a nearby hiking trail. Jerry and I quickly followed the woman’s directions and found ourselves in an off-the-beaten-path area behind the park. As we rounded a corner, we saw a familiar figure standing by a tree. It was Maggie!
As Maggie came towards me, I cried tears of joy. She seemed tired and worn out, but otherwise unharmed. I picked her up and held her close, feeling her heartbeat against my chest. Maggie, in return, covered me with hundreds of kisses. I could tell she was as thrilled to see us as we were. Jerry and Jennifer were grinning from ear to ear as they hugged her too. It was a joyous reunion, filled with laughter and tears of gratitude. The experience brought our family closer together and Maggie’s return had taught us a lesson in the power of community and the importance of never giving up hope.
