In China, more and more people have realized the seriousness of climate change. Many young people have been living a low-carbon life.
Zheng Xiyu is one of them. She has been trying to reduce her carbon footprint.
Every morning, she takes a bus to her office and it takes her about 40 minutes. But Zheng has been thinking of changing this. She wants to try a different means of transport— cycling. Riding a bicycle to work, the lady says, takes about the same amount of time as taking a bus. “ However, it’s better for the environment and my health,” she says.
Professor Lilin has also been leading a low-carbon lifestyle. Her office uses energy-saving lights. These lights go off themselves when they are not needed. This has saved a large amount of electricity. Another way to save energy is to double-print the paper. Professor Li says small actions like these are important for protecting the environment. Let’s say you have saved one ton of paper. That’s about two and a half tons of CO2,” Professor Li says.
Lin Hui always chooses products with a longer life when he shops. He says this helps to reduce waste. Two years ago, Lin and his friends set up an environment website, where he wanted to give some advice on saving energy and protecting the environment.

China is a treasure chest (宝库) of culture and history. But many people from other countries know little about China. Of course, they know the Great Wall, giant pandas and kung fu, but these only scratch the surface (浅尝辄止).
We can go deeper by reading literature (文学作品). Literature is a window into another world and a mirror of society and culture. I first entered the Chinese literature world through a translation of Lu Xun’s A Madman’s Diary, which I read for my high school English class in Australia. Completed in 1918, A Madman’s Diary is about a “madman” who worries that everyone around him wants to eat him. As I read it, I kept wondering, “Is he really mad?” Later I found out that Lu Xun used the madman as a metaphor (比喻) for the madness of society. Back then, China had a feudal (封建的) society, where the ruling class treated common people badly. Lu Xun was very unhappy about this and wanted to express his feelings.
After reading it I realized I had so much more to learn about China. I hope my Chinese will be good enough one day so that I can read the original Chinese version.

Nowadays, we can still see some students with bad manners and behaviors at school from time to time. It is very important to have good manners.
Last week, I went to the school library to study for a test. Two boys were sitting next to me. Instead of reading quietly, they kept making noises and talking loudly about their favorite stars. The noise stopped me from studying well. All the other readers in the library were looking at them, but they still didn’t stop talking. Later, I went to tell them to keep quiet. As a result, they realized their bad behaviors and promised not to do that again.

As winter comes, hands can easily get cold. Thick gloves might be a good choice, but wearing them is sometimes inconvenient. However, this is not a problem for ancient Chinese people, for they had a fine tool to warm their hands—hand warmers.
In the early days, copper (铜) was generally used in the production process. It was more suitable because it could transfer (传递) heat better and it was not easily broken. Inside a hand warmer, there were coals. Some of them were mixed with flowers, giving off a nice smell when burned.
Ancient hand warmers had different designs. Round, square and octagon (八边形) were typical. And there were also some other shapes that looked like pumpkins and flowers. The patterns on the warmers could usually be animals or symbols with good meanings.
There is one folk story about how it was invented. Emperor Yang from the Sui Dynasty visited Jiangsu in winter. Because of the cold weather, a local minister asked craftsmen (匠人) to make a small warmer for the emperor that could be held in his hands. So the hand warmer was created.
It’s easy to change to a low-carbon lifestyle. Everyone can do this and make a difference.

The Great Wall of China runs from the east to the west in the north of China. It has a history of over two thousand years. People built several walls in the 7th century BC. Those were later joined together and made bigger by Qin Shi Huang. Later on , many dynasties repaired old walls and built new walls. The best-known of the walls were built during the Ming Dynasty.
The Great Wall is wide enough for about ten men to walk side by side. Horses can also run on it. The Great Wall is made of stones, bricks, wood and other materials. There are huge stones on each side and on the highest part. There are tall watchtowers along the Great Wall. In the past, the soldiers kept watching enemies in the watchtowers day and night.
