Chris Searle’s journey as a teacher at Sir John Cass Secondary School in Stepney, East London, began in 1970. He was driven by a strong connection to the area and a progressive vision for education. Having completed a postgraduate thesis (论文) on Isaac Rosenberg, a poet from the East End, Searle saw Stepney as a place filled with potential, in spite of its reputation as a hopeless community. He believed that education, particularly through poetry, could transform the lives of his students, many of whom came from low-income, high-risk backgrounds.
Searle’s unconventional approach conflicted with the traditional views of the school’s governors and teachers. At a time when discipline was harsh and students were often regarded as troublemakers, Searle viewed these underachieving teenagers as individuals with untapped potential. He believed that poetry could unlock their creativity and help them express their experiences, offering them a sense of hope and purpose.
His belief in poetry’s power materialized in the creation of Stepney Words, a collection of his students’ poems. Despite the pessimism from some staff who thought his methods too liberal, the poems gained attention, and some of them were even published in The Sun newspaper by March 1971. The collection gave the students a voice, but it also drew’ criticism from school officials who thought the poems were “too gloomy”.
Searle’s progressive ideals led to his dismissal from the school. However, his students, angered by the decision, organized a protest led by 16-year-old Zenaida de la Cruz. The entire school quickly united, standing together with Searle. On his return to the school, he found 800 students standing outside the gates in the rain, showing their support.
Though the government eventually allowed him to return, he decided to leave the school in 1974. His commitment to education did not end there — he continued to teach around the world and published his own poetry, leaving behind a lasting impact of optimism, innovation, and faith in the power of education to bring about change.
4. What did Chris Searle believe could change lives of his students?
A. Strict discipline. B. Peaceful community.
C. Education through poetry. D. Communication activities.
5. Why did Chris Searle believe poetry could help his students?
A. It was a required subject in the school curriculum.
B. It could foster creativity and bring them purpose.
C. The school governors encouraged ‘ poetry writing.
D. His students had already won poetry competitions,
6. Why does the author mention the publication of poems in The Sun?
A. To show the success of Searle’s approach despite criticism.
B. To prove that Searle’s methods were widely accepted.
C. To emphasize the students’ great academic struggles.
D. To criticize the media’s focus on negative topics.
7. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To criticize traditional teaching methods in London schools.
B. To argue that poetry is the most important subject in education.
C. To explain why students in Stepney faced academic challenges.

Several groups of researchers recently studied how getting older. affects the behavior of a wide variety of animals. Their findings, published in a special issue of the scientific journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, show that in many species, animals tend to spend less time socializing with others as they age — and this shift has some surprising benefits.
As with humans, social relationships are an essential part of most animals’ lives. Living and working alongside others helps animals find food and mates and stay safe from predators. In fact, one of the studies found that the more social a species is, the longer that species is likely to live and the more offspring it is likely to produce. However, animals also have good reasons for becoming less social as they get older, a trend known as social aging.
One of the studies focused on wild red deer on the Scottish island of Rum. It found that limiting social interaction reduces an older deer’s risk of getting infected by harmful parasites (寄生虫). Another study found that social aging lowers rhesus macaques’ (猕猴) risk of catching a disease. One study in the journal tracked house sparrows on a remote English island and found that older sparrows have fewer social relationships. Older birds may not need the connections as much as younger sparrows, which have to find mates and learn survival skills from other birds. A study on chacma baboons (赤猴) also suggests that social aging could be a way to save energy.
It is helpful to study aging in animals because scientists can track how their behavior changes over their entire life span, which could also shed light on how human societies will change as they get older. “Animal populations are a great way of considering the fundamental rules of how aging may shape societies,” said journal editor Josh Firth.
8. What did researchers find about highly social species?
A. They get serious diseases easily.
B. Older individuals will become lonelier.
C. They may live longer and produce more offspring.
D. They require more energy to maintain the social bonds.
9. Why might older animals benefit from reduced social interactions?
A. Older animals require more time to rest.
B. Older animals no longer need to find mates.
C. Older animals no longer need to learn survival skills.
D. Reduced socializing lowers the risk of parasite infections.
10. Why is the study of aging in animals helpful?
A. It helps understand how aging affects animal and human societies.
B. It suggests humans should maintain high levels of social activity.
C. It helps scientists develop anti-aging medicine for pets.
D. It helps increase the lifespan of endangered species.
11. What is the main focus of the article?
A. How animal social behavior affects lifespan greatly.
B. Why older animals reduce interactions and the benefits.
C. A comparison between human and animal social behavior.
D. How animal studies can predict future human societal changes.
D
Chinese scientists have discovered two important genes that help sorghum (高粱) resist Striga, a harmful plant that causes big losses in crops. This discovery also shows how AI can help find key parts in certain plant proteins, which could be useful for making many crops stronger against such harmful plants.
The study, published in a famous science journal Cell, was done by a team led by Professor Xie Qi from a top Chinese research institute, along with five other research centers.
Striga, known as “witchweed”, and other similar plants steal food and water from crops, badly affecting farm output and nature. In Africa, Striga alone harms over 50 million hectares of farmland, causing $1.5 billion in losses each year and affecting more than 300 million people. In China, Striga is found in places like Guangdong and Yunnan, while another harmful plant, Orobanche, damages crops like sunflowers and tomatoes in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang.
Sorghum is one crop that Striga attacks. Sorghum roots release certain chemicals that help the plant get nutrients from fungi. However, Striga seeds in the soil can sense these chemicals, which makes them grow and attack the sorghum.
In their research, scientists studied sorghum roots under different, conditions and found two genes, SbSLT1 and SbSLT2, that control the release of these chemicals. When these genes are turned off, the chemicals are not released, and Striga cannot grow and harm the sorghum.
AI helped find a special part of these genes that is important for their function. This part is also found in other crops like corn, rice, and tomatoes, suggesting a common way to fight Striga across different plants. Experiments confirmed the importance of this part.
Field tests in areas with a lot of Striga showed that sorghum with these genes turned off had much less damage and lost much less yield. -This gives farmers a new way to grow sorghum that resists Striga.
The researchers believe that finding SbSLT1 and SbSLT2 can help fight harmful plants, improve food security in affected countries, and support peace and stability. Future work will test these genes in other crops like corn and tomatoes, aiming to make more crops resistant to Striga.
12. Why does Striga affect crop yield?
A. It spreads harmful virus. B. It steals nutrients and water.
C. It attracts insects and birds. D. It blocks sunlight from getting in.
13. What is the significance of turning off the two genes in sorghum?
A. It reduces the yield of sorghum crops.
B. It increases the release of chemicals that attract Striga.
C. It prevents Striga from growing and attacking sorghum.
D. It makes sorghum more dependent on fungi for nutrients.
14. What broader meanings does the discovery have?
A. It will only benefit sorghum farmers in Africa.
B. It has no significant impact beyond sorghum cultivation.
C It will lead to the immediate commercialization of Striga-resistant crops.
D. It could help improve food security and support peace in affected regions.
15. What is the main topic of the passage?
A. The discovery of genes that help sorghum resist Striga.
B. The economic losses caused by Striga in Africa.
C. The role of fungi in providing nutrients.
D. The use of AI in making crops stronger.

The school sports meeting was in full swing. The most anticipated event, the 4x100-meter relay race, was about to start. Tim, a passionate and athletic student, was part of his class’s relay team. Along with his teammates—Mark, Jack and Alex, he had trained intensively for weeks, nurturing high hopes of winning the gold medal.
The atmosphere was electric as the runners took their positions. The starting gun fired, and Mark took off like a bolt of lightning, his powerful strides eating up the track. He smoothly handed the baton(接力棒)to Jack. Jack sprinted(冲刺)ahead with all his might, skillfully maintaining their lead. Then, it was Tim’s turn. As Jack approached at top speed, Tim reached out eagerly for the baton. But in his over-enthusiasm, he miscalculated the distance, and to his horror, the baton dropped to the ground. Time seemed to stand still as Tim stared at the baton, his heart pounding.
He quickly snatched it up and dashed forward, but the precious seconds lost had put them behind the other teams. Alex did his absolute best in the final leg, pushing himself to the limit, but they ultimately crossed the finish line in fourth place, narrowly missing out on the medals.
The disappointment on the team’s faces was obvious. Tim felt as if a heavy weight had settled on his shoulders. He couldn’t bring himself to look at his teammates, consumed by guilt. He replayed the moment of the dropped baton over and over in his mind, each time wishing he could turn back the clock. Mark, usually the most talkative, was silent, his eyes downcast(低垂的). Jack shook his head in frustration, muttering something under his breath. Alex just looked at the ground, his shoulders low. Without a word, they started walking back to the changing room, leaving Tim alone on the track, filled with self-blame.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Chris Searle’s journey as a teacher at Sir John Cass Secondary School in Stepney East London, began in 1970.

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. B

C. It will lead to the immediate commercialization of Striga-resistant crops.
D. It could help improve food security and support peace in affected regions.
15 What is the main topic of the passage?
A. The discovery of genes that help sorghum resist Striga.
B. The economic losses caused by Striga in Africa.
C. The role of fungi in providing nutrients.
D. The use of AI in making crops stronger.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. A

The starting gun fired and Mark took off like a bolt of lightning, his powerful strides eating up the track.

【答案】
Tim knew his mistake had cost the team dearly. He couldn’t help but blame himself for the failure. As he sat on the edge of the track, tears of frustration welled up in his eyes. He thought about all the hard work and dedication they had put into training, and how it had all seemed to be in vain because of his one moment of carelessness. He wondered if his teammates would ever forgive him, and if he would ever be able to make up for what he had done.
Just then, Mark, Jack, and Alex appeared. They walked up to Tim and sat down beside him. Mark placed a comforting hand on Tim’s shoulder and said, “Hey, it’s not your fault. These things happen. We’re a team, and we all make mistakes.” Jack nodded in agreement, adding, “We didn’t lose because of you. We lost because we didn’t work together well enough in that moment. Let’s learn from this and come back stronger next time.” Alex smiled and patted Tim on the back, saying, “We’re still proud of you, and we know you’ll do better next time. We’re in this together.”
