Passage

Mr.
Spencers
class
was
celebrating
Earth
Day.
First,
they
cleaned
up
litter
in
the
school.
Then,
they
planted
beautiful
flowers
at
the
park.
“Whats
next,
Mr.
Spencer?”
asked
Matt.
“Were
planting
a
tree
that
is
given
away
by
a
social
group
to
the
school,”
said
Mr.
Spencer.
“ How?”
Kim
asked,
“ Trees
are
tall
and
huge!”
“ Youll
see,”
said
Mr.
Spencer
with
a
smile.
A
woman
walked
over
carrying
a
small
plant.
“Thats
our
tree?
It
looks
like
a
twig!”
asked
Juan.
“It
wont
be
small
forever!”
said
Mr.
Spencer.
“ The
leaves
use
sunlight
and
air
to
make
food.
The
body
of
the
tree
carries
water
to
the
rest
of
the
tree.
If
the
tree
gets
what
it
needs,
it
will
grow
much
larger. ”
“What
are
these
things?”
Maria
asked.
She
pointed
to
the
bottom
of
the
tree.
“ Roots(根),”
said
Mr.
Spencer.
“Roots
take
in
water
and
other
nutrients(营养物)
from
the
ground
that
the
tree
needs.
We
need
to
find
the
right
environment
for
the
tree.
It
should
be
sunny
so
the
leaves
can
make
food. ”
After
the
small
tree
was
planted,
Kim
said,
“Ill
help
to
give
the
tree
water. ”
“I
cant
wait
to
see
how
our
tree
changes
during
its
life
time,”
said
Mr.
Spencer.
Earth
Day
is
on
April
22nd
every
year.
It
is
an
outdoor
environmental
movement.
Everyone
should
do
something
good
for
the
earth
like
Mr.
Spencers
class.
Only
by
taking
good
care
of
it
every
day
can
we
hope
to
live
in
harmony(和谐)
with
nature.

Passage
3
Two
months
have
passed
since
Richard
Watson
wore
200
special
transmitters(信号发射机)
for
his
cows.
These
devices(设备)
are
part
of
an
artificial-intelligence(AI)
system
named
Ida.
The
system
can
send
messages
to
Watsons
phone
when
his
cows
are
healthy
or
when
they
are
not
feeling
good.
It
can
tell
how
many
animals
are
sick
so
the
dairy(牛奶)
farmers
can
pick
out
the
sick
animals.
With
AI
technology,
farmers
can
get
the
information
they
need
from
their
phones
instead
of
going
to
the
farm
to
check
animals
every
day.
So
this
AI
system
can
spare
people
more
time.
Many
dairy
farmers
are
interested
in
the
Ida
system.
Watson
is
one
of
them.
On
a
common
morning
in
March,
he
pulled
out
his
phone
to
check
his
Ida
App.
It
showed
that
Cows
#97800
and
#97782
were
eating
less.
This
might
mean
that
there
was
something
wrong
with
them.
However,
some
farmers
said,
“I
can
find
out
the
cow
that
isnt
feeling
great
just
by
looking
at
its
eyes. ”
Mark
Rodgers
is
a
neighbor
of
Watsons.
He
said,
“This
is
what
I
can
do
by
myself.
My
experience
can
help
me
look
after
them
better.
Technology
isnt
always
useful. ”
Ida
was
developed
by
the
company
Connecterra.
Yasir
Khokhar,
the
companys
founder,
said
he
came
up
with
the
idea
while
he
was
living
on
a
farm
in
Holland.
The
system
can
record
cows
behavior
by
studying
videos
of
them.
It
now
can
track
seven
cows
behavior.
The
company
is
still
trying
to
improve
this
technology
to
provide
much
more
convenience
for
farmers.

Passage
4
What
can
trees
tell
us
about
climate
change?
Quite
a
lot,
actually!
But
to
understand
what
the
trees
tell
us,
we
first
have
to
understand
the
differences
between
weather
and
climate.
Weather
is
a
specific(具体的)
event—like
a
rainstorm
or
hot
day—that
happens
over
a
short
period
of
time.
Weather
can
be
tracked(追踪)
within
hours
or
days.
Climate
is
the
weather
conditions
in
a
place
over
a
long
period
of
time(30
years
or
more).
Scientists
at
the
National
Weather
Service
have
been
keeping
track
of
weather
in
the
United
States
since
1891.
But
trees
can
keep
a
much
longer
record
of
Earths
climate.
In
fact,
trees
can
live
for
hundreds—and
sometimes
even
thousands
of
years.
One
way
that
scientists
use
trees
to
learn
about
the
past
climate
is
by
studying
a
trees
rings.
If
youve
ever
seen
a
tree
stump(树桩),
you
probably
noticed
that
the
top
of
the
stump
had
some
rings.
These
rings
can
tell
us
how
old
the
tree
is,
and
what
the
weather
was
like
during
each
year
of
the
trees
life.
The
light-colored
rings
represent
wood
that
grew
in
the
spring
and
early
summer,
while
the
dark
rings
represent
wood
that
grew
in
the
late
summer
and
fall.
One
light
ring
and
one
dark
ring
represent
one
year
of
the
trees
life.
Because
trees
are
sensitive
to
local
climate
conditions,
such
as
rain
and
temperature,
they
give
scientists
some
information
about
that
areas
local
climate
in
the
past.
For
example,
tree
rings
usually
grow
wider
in
warm,
wet
years
and
they
are
thinner
in
years
when
it
is
cold
and
dry.
If
the
tree
has
experienced
difficult
conditions,
such
as
a
drought(干旱),
the
tree
might
hardly
grow
at
all
in
those
years.

Peter
kept
his
eyes
on
the
ground.
It
was
the
worst
day
of
his
life.
He
didnt
pass
the
boys
basketball
tryouts(预选赛).
Making
the
team
was
very
important
to
him,
but
his
name
was
not
on
the
list.
On
the
way
home,
he
felt
both
angry
and
upset.
“ I
cant
believe
I
didnt
make
the
team,”
he
shouted.
“ How
did
Alex
make
the
team?
He
cant
keep
up
with
a
tortoise(乌龟)!
Why
is
Jimmy
a
better
choice
than
me?
He
just
stands
around
moving
his
arms!”
“Peter!”
his
mother
said,
cutting
him
off.
“Why
dont
you
just
stop
and
think?
Maybe
you
need
a
little
more
practice.
Besides,
winning
or
losing
is
only
half
the
tryouts.
The
other
half
is
learning
from
your
mistakes. ”
Peter
didnt
speak
anymore,
but
he
thought
about
what
his

said
carefully.
Then
he

It

He

He
knew
he
was
ready
for
the
tryouts
in
fall.
The
big
day
finally
came.
As
everyone
crowded
around
the
list,
he
played
it
cool
and
waited
for
his
chance
to
read
the
list.
Finally,
it
was
his
turn.
He
slowly
looked
at
the
list.
Not
only
did
he
make
it
on
the
list,
but
his
name
was
the
very
first!
At
that
time,
he
knew
his
hard
work
paid
off
and
he
knew
exactly
what
he
would
do
next!

Passage
7
Have
you
ever
asked
yourself
why
people
often
have
trouble
learning
English?
I
hadnt,
until
one
day
my
five-year-old
son
asked
me
whether
there
was
ham
in
a
hamburger.
There
isnt.
This
made
me
realize
that
there
is
no
egg
in
an
eggplant,
either.
Neither
is
there
pine
nor
apple
in
pineapple.
This
got
me
thinking
how
English
can
be
a
crazy
language
to
learn.
In
our
free
time
we
can
sculpt
a
sculpture(雕塑)
and
paint
a
painting,
but
we
take
a
photo.
And
when
we
are
travelling
we
say
that
we
are
in
the
car
or
the
taxi,
but
on
the
train
or
bus!
While
were
doing
all
this
travelling,
we
can
get
seasick
at
sea,
airsick
in
the
air
and
carsick
in
a
car,
but
we
dont
get
homesick
when
we
get
home.
And
speaking
of
home,
why
arent
homework
and
housework
the
same
thing?
If
“ hard”
is
the
opposite
of
“ soft”,
why
are
“ hardly”
and
“ softly”
not
an
opposing
pair?
If
harmless
actions
are
the
opposite
of
harmful
actions,
why
are
shameless
and
shameful
behaviors
the
same?
When
we
look
out
of
the
window
and
see
rain
or
snow,
we
can
say
“ its
raining”
or
“ its
snowing”.
But
when
we
see
sunshine,
we
cannot
say
“its
sunshining”.
Even
the
shortest
words
can
confuse(迷惑)
you.
When
you
see
“WHO”
in
a
medical
report,
do
you
read
it
as
the
“who”
in
“Whos
that”?
What
about
“IT”
and
“US”?
You
also
have
to
wonder
at
the
madness
of
a
language
in
which
a
house
can
burn
down
as
it
burns
up,
in
which
you
fill
in
a
form
by
filling
it
out,
and
in
which
an

English

Passage

Dennis
didnt
feel
like
sleeping.
So
one
night,
he
decided
he
would
stay
up!
What
Dennis
didnt
realize
is
that
staying
awake
at
night
is
hard
when
your
body
needs
to
sleep.
He
tried
everything
he
could
think
of
to
stop
himself
from
falling
asleep.
But
unfortunately,
it
made
him
even
more
tired.
He
started
to
suspect(怀疑)
that
it
was
the
counting,
and
not
the
choice
of
animal,
that
made
people
sleepy.
Dennis
was
just
about
ready
to
give
up
when
he
heard
a
squeak(吱吱叫)
from
his
hamster(仓鼠)
Charlie.
He
went
over
to
Charlies
cage,
but
it
was
empty.
Dennis
followed
the
sounds
of
squeaking
until
he
found
Charlie
on
the
floor,
looking
behind
the
door.
Dennis
noticed
that
something
back
was
throwing
things
at
Charlie!
“Whats
there,
Charlie?”
Dennis
asked
as
he
picked
up
the
hamster
and
walked
towards
the
door.
What
he
saw
made
him
wonder
if
he
had
actually
fallen
asleep
and
not
realized
it.
“Its
a
its
a
rabbit!”
he
said.
No
bigger
than
Charlie,
the
rabbit
wore
a
yellow
shirt,
a
tiny
pair
of
green
pants,
and
a
hat.
“Why
are
you
throwing
things
at
my
hamster,
rabbit?”
asked
Dennis.
“Why
do
you
keep
a
vicious (凶猛的)
hamster
as
a
pet,
human?”
asked
the
rabbit.
“ Charlie
is
not
vicious!
More
importantly,
why
are
you
in
my
room,
rabbit?”
asked
Dennis.
“That
is
an
interesting
question,
human. ”
“My
name
is
not
‘ human.
Its
Dennis,”
Dennis
said
angrily.
“ I
already
know
your
name.
And
rabbits
have
names
too!”
Dennis
didnt
say
anything
for
a
moment,
and
neither
did
the
rabbit.
It
was
an
awkward
silence
for
everyone
except
Charlie
who,
as
usual,
had
fallen
asleep
shortly
after
Dennis
picked
him
up.
“Well,
what
is
your

then?”
asked
Dennis.

Passage

Imagine
having

you

parks—just
a

This

the

behind
the
15-minute
city.
Here,
people
can
get
all
the
services
they
need
within
15
minutes
from
home.
This
social
model
is
being
developed
in
cities
around
the
world,
from
Paris
to
Moscow.
It
could
make
people
healthier
and
build
stronger
relationships

neighbors.
Carlos

is
a
strong
supporter
of
the
15-minute
city.
He
was
encouraged
by
the
need
to
fight
against
climate
change.
In
a
15-minute
city,
car
travel
is
not
the
best
choice.
People
should
build
more
foot
roads
and
bike
roads.
Walking
or
riding
across
the
city
is
of
great
use
in
diminishing
CO2 emissions(排放).
Anne
Hidalgo
plans
to
develop
15-minute
communities
throughout
France.
That
means
the
number
of
parking
space
will
be
cut
down
to
60,000
and
more
bike
roads
will
be
created
on
every
street
of
the
city.
This
type
of
design
does
more
than
good
to
the
planet.
Joe
Zehnder
is
the
planner
of
the
city
Moscow.
He
is
developing
“15-minute
neighborhoods”.
“ Having
stores
close
to
homes
makes
people
be
able
to
eat
healthier
food
and
live
a
better
life,”
Zehnder
says.
Syra
Madad
is
also
a
key
person
behind
the
15-minute
city
plan.
He
wants
to
make
these
places
inclusive
(包容的).
As
a
neighborhood
becomes
more
convenient,
housing
costs
may
increase.
Madad
suggests
trying
creating
more
kinds
of
houses
so
that
people
of
different
groups
can
have
a
chance
to
live
there.
At
the

a

Carmen
had
always
dreamed
of
being
on
stage.
She
was
excited
when
she
got
her
first
big
break
with
a
part
in
the
school
play.
She
would
play
the
role
of
a
doctor.
She
would
wear
a
long,
white
doctors
coat
and
carry
a
big
bag
that
held
a
newspaper
with
blank(空白的)
pages
and
a
box
of
bandages(绷带).
She
could
hardly
wait
to
act
in
a
real
play
on
stage.
As
the
play
came
closer,
Carmen
began
to
worry
about
being
on
stage.
She
sat
in
her
bedroom,
saying
the
lines
over
and
over
again.
They
just
wouldnt
stick
in
her
head.
It
would
be
terrible
if
she
forgot
her
lines
on
stage.
She
thought
for
a
long
time
and
decided
to
give
up
the
play.
She
still
wanted
to
be
in
the
play,
but
she
didnt
want
to
risk
making
a
fool
of
herself
on
stage.
Carmen
walked
into
the
kitchen
and
said
she
wouldnt
be

the
play.
“ Dont

so
much,”
Carmens
father
said.
“Youre

You
are

performer. ”
“Yes,”
her
mother
agreed.
“Youll

Carmen
knew
they
were
right,
but
she

worrying.
Suddenly,
she
had
a
great
idea.
She
took
out
the

and

of

pages.
Now
she
could
look
at
the
newspaper
and
no
one
would
know
she
was
reading
her
lines.
This
would
help
her
relax.
That
day,
Carmen
went
on
stage.
She
said
her
first
line.
Then
the
next
line.
Carmen
didnt
look
at
the
newspaper
once.
Remembering
her
lines
was
easy
because
she
was
relaxed.
As
a
result,
Carmen
remembered
everything.
Carmens
parents
went
backstage,
and
they
rushed
over
to
congratulate
her
on
a
job
well
done.

no

much

to

They
believe
their

However,
I
think
that
handwriting
is
still
important.
Writing
is
an
important

of
Chinese
traditional

so
practicing
writing
helps
to

Everyones
handwriting
has
personal

For

handwritten

I
also
think
handwriting
can
improve

Whats
more,
it
can
teach

In

For
