One summer night, a boy felt himself lifted from bed by his father. Dazed with sleep, he saw stars flashing across the heavens. “What is it?” the child whispered. “Shooting stars. They come every year in August.” Decades have passed, but I remember that night still, because I was the fortunate boy whose father believed a new experience was more important than an unbroken night’s sleep.
Some parents like my father have the gift of opening doors for their children. This art of adding dimensions to a child brings the reward: the marvelous moment when the spark bursts into a flame that will burn brightly on its own one day. At a Golf Association tournament, a ten-year-old girl played creditably. “How long have you been interested in golf?” someone asked. “I got it for my ninth birthday,” she said. “Your father gave you a set of clubs?” “No,” she said, “he gave me golf.”
I have a friend, a psychiatrist, who says there are two types of people: those who think of life as a privilege and those who think of it as a problem. The first type is enthusiastic and energetic. The other type is suspicious and self-centered. And he adds, “Tell me about your childhood and I can tell you which type you are likely to be.”
The real purpose, then, of trying to open doors for children is to build eager and outgoing attitudes, which is the most valuable legacy we can pass on to the next generation. But why don’t we work harder at it? Probably because sometimes we don’t have the awareness or the selflessness or the energy. And yet, for those of us who care what becomes of our children, the challenge is always there but the opportunities also come repeatedly. Many years have passed since that night. And next year, when August comes with its shooting stars, my son will be seven.
4. What do the underlined words “adding dimensions to” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Setting an example for. B. Broadening the horizons of.
C. Providing attentive care for. D. Narrowing the possibilities of.
5. Why does the author mention the girl in Paragraph 2?
A. To show parental impact on children’s passion.
B. To suggest hobbies always start from the small.
C. To highlight the importance of diverse experiences.
D. To prove true passion usually arises from the reward.
6. What will the author’s psychiatrist friend agree with?
A. One’s personality is related to childhood experiences.
B. Childhood experience determines adult happiness.
C. Parenting styles requires professional guidance.
D. Stability in upbringing builds confidence.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The author is always addicted to shooting stars.
B. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to motivate kids.
C. The author will go to see shooting stars with his son.
D. It is impossible to unlock kids’ potential without eagerness.
B 5. A 6. A 7. C

The male western tanager (唐纳雀) looks like a little flame, while females are less showy, a dusty yellow. In the spring, they prepare to move thousands of miles to the Mountain West of Central America, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards.
To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as global climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination after what’s known as “green-up”, when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge. According to a study published in early March in the journal PNAS, this kind of timing mismatch between migrants (迁移动物) and their food sources, which is happening across North America, could have serious consequences for migratory birds’ survival. “In discussing climate change, we often focus on warming,” says Scott Loss, a co-author of the study. “But the length and timing of seasons — like when winter ends and spring begins — are some of the most dramatic effects of climate change.”
Loss and his colleagues used satellite imagery from 2002 to 2021 to calculate the average start of spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, then compared that timing with the current green-up. They found that spring is indeed beginning earlier along birds’ migration routes. “By contrast, previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North America,” says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at UCLA, “but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of the food web might be just as vulnerable (脆弱的).”
“Part of it is knowing which species are vulnerable to various threats,” Loss says. “This adds to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hopes that the information will serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible. “It’s really important, if we can’t address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.”
8. What may pose a direct threat to western tanagers’ survival?
A. Global warming. B. The duration of changing seasons.
C. Loss of habitats due to human activities. D. Decreased access to foods during migration.
9. What is unique about the new study on birds like western tanagers?
A. It covers a wider geographic range.
B. It reveals the decline in bird populations.
C. It centers on the adaptation of bird species.
D. It ensures the existence of a timing mismatch.
10. What does Loss suggest we do to safeguard migratory birds?
A. Lessen the effects of climate change. B. Preserve ecosystems for bird species.
C. Address emissions and habitat loss. D. Expand research on threats to birds.
11. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A popular science magazine. B. A bird-watching guidebook.
C. A website about bird habitats. D. A paper about wildlife conservation.
D 9. A 10. C 11. A

根据第二段中“But as global climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination after what’s known as “green-up”, when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge. According to a study published in early March in the journal PNAS, this kind of timing mismatch between migrants (迁移动物) and their food sources, which is happening across North America, could have serious consequences for migratory birds’ survival.(但随着全球气候变化导致春季提前到来,像西部唐纳雀这样的鸟类到达目的地时,已经错过了所谓的“返青期”——即花朵开始盛开、昆虫出现的时期。根据3月初发表在《美国国家科学院院刊》上的一项研究,这种在整个北美地区正在发生的迁徙动物与其食物来源之间的时间不匹配,可能会对候鸟的生存造成严重后果)”可知,在迁徙过程中食物获取减少可能对西方唐纳雀的生存构成直接威胁。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中““By contrast, previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North America,” says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at UCLA, “but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of the food web might be just as vulnerable (脆弱的).”(加州大学洛杉矶分校的鸟类学家Morgan Tingley表示:“相比之下,此前的研究主要聚焦于北美东部的鸣禽,而这项新研究表明,西部的鸟类物种以及处于不同食物链层级的鸟类可能同样脆弱。”)” 故选A。
根据最后一段中“And he hopes that the information will serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible. “It’s really important, if we can’t address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.”(他希望这些信息能有助于凸显尽快降低温室气体排放的紧迫性。“如果我们不能立即解决气候变化问题,那么尽可能阻止栖息地丧失就变得非常重要。”)可知,Loss建议我们应对排放和栖息地丧失以保护候鸟。故选C。
【11题详解】

Beethoven is a giant of classical music. And the one with the most influence at least when it comes to piano compositions. That’s according to a study in the journal EPJ Data Science.
If you’re wondering how data analysis could determine something as abstract as cultural influence, it’s worth remembering the great thing about music: it’s the most mathematical of the art forms we actually can deal with because a lot of it is symbolic. The music is written in symbols that are connected in time.
Juyong Park is a theoretical physicist at the Korea Advanced institute of Science and Technology. Park and his colleagues collected 900 piano compositions by 19 composers covering the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, from 1700 to 1910. Then they used that mathematical quality to their advantage by dividing each composition into what they called “code words,” a group of notes played at the same time—in other words, a chord. They then compared each chord to the chords that came before it. “Our computer model allows us to calculate the degree of shared melodies between past and future works.” said Park.
The composer with top marks for novelty was Rachmaninoff. But when the researchers looked at those chord transitions across all 19 composers, it was Beethoven who was most heavily borrowed from—meaning, at least among the composers in this analysis, his influence was the largest.
Their study comes with a couple caveats. The researchers only considered piano compositions in this work—-not orchestral works. And by only studying chord transitions, their conclusions wouldn’t capture artists who had influence in other ways. “It’s well understood that Mozart’s contribution to music mainly comes from the musical forms that he devised. That was not very well captured by our mathematical modeling.”
12. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. They turned music compositions into written symbols.
B. They looked at how chords differed from previous ones.
C. They collected 900 pieces from contemporary composer.
D. They calculated the number of chords in each music piece.
13. What can be known from the research findings?
A. Beethoven was best at coming up with new chords.
B. Beethoven borrowed heavily from another composer.
C. Rachmaninoff’s chords were most unlike previous ones.
D. Rachmaninoff’s chords were copied by future composers.
14. What does he underlined word “caveats” probably mean?
A. warnings B. benefits C. costs D. proofs
15. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Beethoven Regarded as a Giant of Classical Music.
B. Similarity between Music and Math Investigated.
C. Beethoven’s Major Musical Contribution Confirmed.
D. Computer Analyses Confirm Beethoven’s Influence.
B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第三段的“They then compared each chord to the chords that came before it. “Our computer model allows us to calculate the degree of shared melodies between past and future works.” said Park. (然后,他们将每个和弦与之前的和弦进行比较。“我们的计算机模型允许我们计算过去和未来作品之间共享旋律的程度。”朴说)”可知,他们通过观察和弦与之前的和弦有何不同来进行研究。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“The composer with top marks for novelty was Rachmaninoff. (新颖性最高的作曲家是拉赫玛尼诺夫)”可知,在新颖性方面得分最高的作曲家是拉赫玛尼诺夫。所以拉赫玛尼诺夫的和弦与之前的和弦截然不同。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“The researchers only considered piano compositions in this work—-not orchestral works. And by only studying chord transitions, their conclusions wouldn’t capture artists who had influence in other ways. (研究人员在这部作品中只考虑了钢琴作品,而没有考虑管弦乐作品。仅仅研究和弦转换,他们的结论无法捕捉到在其他方面有影响力的艺术家)”可知,下文提到的内容是该研究的局限性。由此推知,划线词所在句子意为“他们的研究有几点需要注意”,即caveats意为“注意”,与warnings同义。故选A。
And the one with the most influence at least when it comes to piano compositions. That’s according to a study in the journal EPJ Data Science.

上文“Silent walking involves walking outdoors without distractions like music or conversations, focusing on the mind-body-nature connection.(静默行走包括在户外行走,不受音乐或对话等干扰,专注于身心自然的联系)”以及下文“That’s a slower, lower-impact way to relax and is great for fitness. Here’s everything you need to know about the trend.(这是一种较慢、影响较小的放松方式,非常适合健身。以下是您需要了解的有关趋势的所有信息)”说明静默行走是一种适合健身的运动方式。空处补充上文内容,并引出下文。F项中的it指代前文中的Silent walking,“reaching certain speed or steps”和下文中的“That’s a slower, lower-impact way”相呼应,说明静默行走不关注到特定的速度或步数,而是以一种较慢、影响较小的放松方式行走。
上文“Select a natural setting and fully engage your senses. For reaping the mental health benefits, it is recommended to find a quiet and peaceful natural location. (选择一个自然的环境,充分利用你的感官。为了获得心理健康的好处,建议找一个安静、宁静的自然地点)”说明静默行走需要选择找一个安静、宁静的自然地点。空处与前文内容形成因果逻辑关系,G项中的“In such an environment”和前文中的“a quiet and peaceful natural location”相呼应,说明在这样安静和自然的环境下,你就可以沉浸在自然的音景中。故选G。
【18题详解】
上文“To stimulate the mind, consider exploring different routes than usual. Without your favourite podcast or playlist, you might slip into boredom on your walk. (为了刺激大脑,可以考虑探索与平时不同的路线。如果没有你最喜欢的播客或播放列表,你可能会在散步时陷入无聊)”说明如果平时喜欢博客等,在静默散步时就会感到无聊。空处和前文形成转折关系,所以提出的“无聊的积极影响”提供铺垫。A项中的But引出了与上文相对的观点,表明尽管无聊可能被视为不愉快的体验,但它并非有害,这为下文科学家对无聊的积极评价提供了逻辑上的衔接。A项“But being bored won’t hurt you.” 故选A。
上文“If you’re usually a headphone wearer, it will feel super weird to walk without your go-to tunes, but give yourself a second to adjust. Chances are, once you’re a few minutes into your silent walk, you’ll feel the magic kick in.(如果你通常是一个戴耳机的人,在没有音乐的情况下走路会感觉非常奇怪,但给自己一秒钟的时间来调整。
上文“After completing a silent walk, take time to reflect upon any emerging thoughts, feelings, or insights. When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.

Tom was an ordinary high school student with great potential. However, ever since he got his hands on a state-of-the-art (最先进的) smartphone, his life began to look like a mess. What began as a casual interest in mobile games and social media soon turned into a full-blown addiction (上瘾). He would spend hours on end, eyes glued (粘) to the screen, unaware of the world around him.
In class, instead of paying attention to the teachers’ lectures, he would hide his phone under the desk, absorbed in texting his online friends or watching entertaining videos. His homework was either carelessly done or left unfinished. His grades, which had been always above average, started to fall quickly. His teachers noticed the change and repeatedly reminded him, but he was too deep in the addiction to pay attention to their warnings.
At home, the situation was no better. Family dinners were disturbed (打扰;干扰) by his constant phone-checking. He locked himself in his room, preferring online strangers to that of his own family. His parents were deeply concerned and tried various methods to wean (使……戒掉) him off the phone. They limited his screen time, hid the device, and even engaged (忙于,从事于) in long. heart-to-heart conversations with him about the importance of focus and self-control. But each time, Tom would find a way to get back to his phone.
One day, Tom’s school announced a scholarship (奖学金) opportunity for students with outstanding academic performance. This was a dream for Tom, as it could open doors to a well-known university and a bright future. But as he looked at his recent report cards filled with disappointing grades and thought about his phone-addicted habits, he felt disappointed. It was then that he realized how terrible the situation was and decided to take measures to overcome his addiction and lead a normal life.

D
