B A New Hampshire woman has raised nearly $400,000 for an elderly disabled man named Donald, who has been battling to keep up with bills while caring for his wife. The story began when Jenelle encountered Donald at a pawn (典当) shop in Manchester, where he was unwillingly pawning jewelry to settle his debts. Donald shared with Jenelle the hardships he was facing: his rent had increased, and he was finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet while caring for his wife. He feared they might lose their home and that his beloved wife could end up in a care facility due to their financial pressure. Deeply moved by his situation, Jenelle immediately took action. She gathered $1300 from her own savings and contributions from friends and family to help the 90-year-old. A video she shared of Donald receiving the money quickly went viral, recording the moment he called Jenelle “an angel”. The outpouring of support didn’t stop there. Jenelle set up a GoFundMe page for Donald, and the response was overpowering. Donations poured in from around the world, bringing the total to nearly $400,000. In an update, Jenelle shared the emotional moment she told Donald about the incredible generosity of strangers. “I told him that meant that everyone in the world was seeing this and stepping forward to donate,” she said. “Even before I told him the amount, he was already extremely emotional and couldn’t believe the kindness of strangers across the world.” Despite the outpouring of support, Donald remained humble, insisting he didn’t deserve it and that he was “just an ordinary man”. But as Jenelle explained to him, he’s much more than that to the countless people who have been touched by his story. Jenelle plans to keep the fundraiser open until she and Donald can meet with an attorney (代理人) to ensure the money is safely managed. This remarkable act of kindness shows how the generosity of strangers can transform lives, offering hope and security to those who need it most. 24. What is Donald’s main difficulty according to the passage? A. Covering his bills. B. Landing a proper job. C. Managing his health. D. Finding a suitable care facility. 25. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. Fears Donald faced in his life. B. Hardships Donald and Jenelle shared. C. How Jenelle started her act of kindness. D. When Donald called Jenelle “an angel”. 26. Which can be used to describe the donation after the setting up of GoFundMe? A. Limited. B. Regular. C. Occasional. D. Irresistible. 27. What does the last paragraph aim to highlight? A. The importance of legal management for funds. B. The transformative power of collective kindness. C. The impact of social media on fundraising efforts. D. The challenges faced by the elderly in financial crises. C The ocean feels boundless. If you were to start swimming from shore, it’s easy to believe — fitness and oxygen aside — you could continue forever. That’s a far different experience to overland travel, where mountains, rivers, and highways jammed with traffic prevents easy passage. It’s equally easy to believe that fish and other highly mobile sea creatures could smoothly experience the ocean. These animals, adapted over thousands of years to navigate the ocean, must easily bypass (绕过) any barrier around which they can theoretically swim. That assumption, though, is wrong. It’s common for many oceanic species to stick to specific habitats and only seldom swim beyond them. That is especially true for many immature animals, which are small and easy to fall victim to predators (捕食者). This, however, can cause unexpectedly big problems for oceanic species, especially when infrastructure (基础设施) gets in the way. Take, for example, the green sawfish living near the mouth of the Ashburton River in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. In 2017, engineers working on a local oil and gas processing plant built a new loading facility consisting of a large piling jetty (码头) and solid rock wall, which stretched 500 meters offshore. Later, scientists realized that the green sawfish were unable, or unwilling, to pass around the barrier. But that could prevent the animals from reaching valuable feeding grounds and other habitats. This discovery leads to a surprising new idea: that sea animals, much like land species, need a helping hand getting around human infrastructure. In the case of the green sawfish, engineers could have created underpasses in the jetty through which the fish could swim. As the climate continues to change, many sea species are moving farther north and they need suitable habitats to move through. Whether creating pass-throughs in artificial structures or plotting routes away from warming oceans, thoughtfully designing our infrastructure could go a long way toward protecting animals as we continue to engineer the ocean. 28. What is the misunderstanding mentioned in the first paragraph? A. Sea creatures adapt to the ocean slowly. B. The ocean presents no barriers to sea life. C. Humans are naturally skilled at sea navigation. D. Sea travel guarantees easier passage than land travel. 29. Why are the green sawfish mentioned in the passage? A. To illustrate a point. B. To present a phenomenon. C. To put forward a new argument. D. To add some background information. 30. What does the author suggest about engineering the ocean? A. Maximizing economic benefits. B. Prioritizing human infrastructures. C. Creating underpasses for surfers. D. Accommodating oceanic species’ needs. 31. Where could this passage come from? A. A geography textbook. B. An wildlife forum. C. A scientific magazine. D. A travel blog. D Soratobu Medaka, a children’s book, tells the story of tiny medaka fish riding on a bird to a distant pond. It has delighted children, but now it’s revealed to be true. Researchers have long struggled to explain how fish turn up in lakes far from other bodies of water, a mystery even Charles Darwin noted in 1859, when he suggested that aquatic (水生的) hatchlings might stick to the feet of birds, though his bright idea remained a theory. In 2019, Yao Akifumi, a biology student then, wondered if Darwin might have been right and further wondered if fish-hunting birds might transport egg-bearing aquatic plants stuck to their feet. To test this, he set up two ponds one metre apart, one containing 36plants and the other without, both equipped with camera traps. After six months, some plants had switched ponds, and one camera captured a bird flying away with a plant on its foot. Next, Yao aimed to see if fish eggs could weather the journey being carried out of water. He attached tiny medaka eggs to aquatic plants and removed them for zero to 24hours—at favorable hatching conditions — before returning them. In a paper in Science of Nature, Mr. Yao reports that the medaka eggs can successfully hatch after up to 18 hours out of the water. Eggs without a plant leaf to attach to rarely survived a few hours. The big drop in survival was at 16.3 hours, when half the eggs became lifeless. Whether any egg could survive that long, given that a bird’s average flight-speed is around 39kph, is doubtful, says Mr Yao, since wind exposure during such a long journey would dry them out. Shorter journeys, however, are certainly possible. And since many other medaka-like species are found throughout Asia, the chances are high that hitchhiking (搭便车) explains how they have ended up in lakes with seemingly no connection to other water bodies. Yet again, it would seem, Darwin’s theories turn out to be correct. 32. Why does the author mention Darwin’s idea? A. To introduce an academic term. B. To provide research background. C. To question a well-known theory. D. To explore new research methods. 33. What evidence did Yao find to support his assumption? A. Birds flying between ponds. B. Fish eggs surviving on plants. C. A plant growing in both ponds. D. A bird carrying a plant on its foot. 34. What may increase medaka eggs’ survival? A. Birds’ flying route. B. Wind exposure. C. Supporting leaves. D. Longer journeys. 35. What is the main idea of the text? A. Children’s book inspires research. B. Origin of fish has been uncovered. C. Fish’s hitch riding has been proven. D. Eggs and plants have a close relation. Teaching students to ask good questions engages them and acts as an ongoing assessment. Here are some of the benefits of inquiry-based learning. Questions reveal interest We ask questions when something catches our attention and surprises us, or when we hear something we want more information about.___36____. It is like saying, “Hey! I am paying attention, and I want to know more!” Asking a great question is even more revealing. Questions reveal both gaps and strengths in understanding ___37____. In fact, it makes our job a lot easier when we are asked a question that can clarify a misunderstanding or explain something in a better way. Teaching students to ask effective questions can reveal what a child doesn’t understand, allowing us to fill in the gaps and likely improve understanding for other students too. ____38____ Research shows that when we ask a question ourselves, we are more likely to remember the information we receive. It makes sense—we are likely to ask about something that is interesting or relevant to us, and by asking the question, we become personally invested in the answer. Questions keep learners engaged If we are open to children’s questions and leave room for discussion, the lesson can quickly become more interesting when the children’s own questions guide it.___39____. A question can make students personally engaged in the topic or activity. Questions build a foundation for new knowledge There are many benefits of inquiry-based learning. Any subject or topic starts out with broad, foundational information that forms the basis for more in-depth or specific knowledge. A question posed at the right time builds essential knowledge. With that understanding, the more complex and more interesting knowledge has roots.____40____. A. Questions improve memory B. Questions show your excellence C. And the learning provides a chance to grow D. And they get a lot of benefits from asking questions E. There is a difference between a good question and a bad one F. I was grouped with Amy and Mack. At first, everything seemed normal, but as discussions began, I sensed their lack of engagement. During our first meeting in the corner of the library, Amy’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Let’s pick Hawaii! Their swimsuits are to die for,” she said. Mack, slouching in his chair, just shrugged. “Whatever. But your hair looks like it went through a blender (搅拌器),” he joked. I clenched my teeth, choosing to ignore his comment. At our next group meeting, the clock on the wall ticked loudly, making the silence more awkward. No one seemed very eager to talk about our brochure, so I shared the facts I’ d gathered about Hawaiian culture and food. When I finished, silence filled the air. I opened my notebook. “Amy, you promised to find pictures of Hawaiian sea life. Did you get any?” “Too busy,” she replied as she rummaged through her bag. “But here’ s a photo of me at a Hawaii hotel pool.” I glanced at the picture taped in her notebook. “You look nice, but that’s not sea life. Mack, what about the geography part you were handling?” “It’ ll get done. Been swamped lately,” he mumbled and avoided my gaze. “Same here! I’m totally overwhelmed!” Amy added. It became clear that I might be the only one working on this project. Days later, my disappointment was obvious. Our teacher, Mr. Thompson, noticed and pulled me aside after class. “Group projects can be tough. Communicate clearly. And don’t worry — I’ll grade individual efforts too.” His words lifted my spirits. Armed with this advice, I called another group meeting. I took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. “Guys, this project really matters. It’s not just about a grade. We’ re here to learn something new. I’ve put in a lot of work, but I can’t do it alone. Let’s work together.” I said firmly. Surprisingly, Amy and Mack responded positively this time. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Combining our contributions, we completed a colorful brochure. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 How much is the shirt? Our school is to/will hold a community-based practical activity next weekend, with the primary aim of cultivating students’ awareness of caring for others and serving the society. During the activity, we plan to pay a visit to the nursing home in the nearby neighbourhood. We’ll assist senior citizens with various daily chores, including cleaning their houses and buying groceries. Additionally, we’ve arranged some entertainment games, which can offer them a lot of happiness. This is a great opportunity to make a great difference to the community and gain a better understanding of local life. I sincerely hope you can join us in this meaningful event. Our school is to/will hold a community-based practical activity next weekend, with the primary aim of cultivating students’ awareness of caring for others and serving the society. Our school is to/will hold a community-based practical activity next weekend, whose primary aim is to cultivate students’ awareness of caring for others and serving the society. 1】Additionally, we’ve arranged’ some entertainment games, which can offer them a lot of happiness. Surprisingly, Amy and Mack responded positively this time. “I’m really sorry,” Amy blurted out, her cheeks turning pink, “I’ll start looking for pictures of Hawaiian sea life right now.” Before I could react, Mack straightened in his chair. “Geography’ s mine,” he declared. Witnessing their sudden change, I felt a wave of relief. Without delay, we got down to business. While Amy scrolled through websites late into the night, saving images of dolphins and fish, Mack filled three notebook pages with volcano statistics. Meanwhile, I continued to refine the text, making sure our words were engaging and accurate. We kept in touch, shared new discoveries and offered support. Combining our contributions, we completed a colorful brochure that impressed even Mr. Thompson. The final product was a perfect blend of Amy’s vibrant images, Mack’s in-depth geographical insights, and my well-structured text. When we presented it in class, all eyes were on us. Our classmates were amazed, and we received thunderous applause. We felt proud of our teamwork. 词汇激活 行为类 ①寻找:look for/search for ②继续:continue/go on ③确保:make sure/ensure 情绪类 ①惊讶:amazed/surprised ②吸引人:engaging/appealing 【点睛】[高分句型1] Before I could react, Mack straightened in his chair.(由before引导时间状语从句) [高分句型2] When we presented it in class, all eyes were on us.(由when引导时间状语从句) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
