Stuchio pulled out the little plastic chair and told me to sit.I placed my workbook
on the table and began.“A pig can jig,”I recited.“Excellent,”she said“Go

couldn't get enough of them,like Harriet the Spy,All-of-A-Kind Family,etc.

At junior high school,English became my favorite class.I have vivid
memories of Mrs Ayers reading The Cask of the Amontillado aloud as my eighth-
grade classmates and I sat fascinated by her deep and emotional voice. In following
English classes,my teachers assigned demanding books such as The Stranger,A
Tale of Two Cities and complex research papers. For the first time,I felt book-
related anxiety.
After getting my college degree in English and working at seventeen
magazines, books called again:I left to get my teaching certification. As a new
English teacher in Manhattan,I stressed the importance of immersive reading.
Annotations(注释),I felt,broke the drive.“Sustained silent reading'”,during
which students spent entire periods reading, was essential to my curriculum.
Today,as a librarian at Manhasset High School,I promote reading with
enthusiasm.In a recent ninth-grade class,I created a "reading workout".
Students sampled books spread across tables and read with no schedule.I'd never
seen them more engaged. For now,I'll keep getting lost in reading and use my
platform as a librarian to share my passion.

Researchers recently studied some newly discovered dark rocks from Mars and
concluded that they were likely laid down from the air, potentially as volcanic ash
billions of years ago. However,no volcanoes have been discovered at the site to
date."There are no known volcanoes at this site, which means the ash probably
came from hundreds or maybe even thousands of kilometers away,"the study first
author Emma Harris said in a statement."It likely came from a really explosive
volcano which launched ash high into the atmosphere and the ash travelled this
huge distance before settling at this site."
Researchers found there were strange light-coloured spots on the rocks, each
surrounded by dark material containing iron and phosphate(磷酸盐).“These
spots are a big surprise,"said David Flannery at the Queensland University of
Technology."On Earth, these types of features on rocks are often associated with
the fossilized record of microbes(微生物)living in the subsurface,”That is
because the type of chemical reaction that creates these sorts of spots on Earth
rocks can also provide useful energy for microbes.
In the same area where the rocks are located, certain.organic compounds that
are often considered the building blocks of life were also found. All of these
together could be taken as a sign of bygone Martian microbes, but it is far from a
smoking gun."We should be cautiously excited and keep sensible,"said the
researchers.
To learn more about these rocks, the study authors mapped a region of 19,
300 square miles using data from the Context Camera on the Mars Reconnaissance
Orbiter,a NASA satellite. The dark rocks are theorized to have once covered the
whole site, but are now only found in smaller areas. The researchers propose that
this is because the ash was preserved in areas of lower altitude inside impact
craters(撞击坑),where it mixed with groundwater.“When the ash fell on these
patches of water,it made them stickier and then more solid. The rest of the ash
which landed on the surrounding rocks may have just blown away and never
preserved,"Harris said.
28.Why did Emma Harris mention "no known volcanoes at this site"?
A.To prove the site has always been inactive.
B.To make a guess about the source of ash.
C.To indicate the rocks are formed by impacts.
D.To explain the reason for the special colour of the rocks.

29.Why were researchers surprised at the light-coloured spots?
A.They appeared in smaller regions than expected.
B.They contained minerals previously unknown on Mars.
C.They challenged previous findings about Martian geography.
D.They might involve reactions often linked to microbial activity on Earth
30.What does the underlined phrase "far from a smoking gun"in paragraph 3
probably mean?
A.A direct cause.
B.Obvious misunderstanding.
C.Not strong evidence.
D.Not a problem.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Impact craters with traces of water on Mars
B.Martian ash:clues to ancient volcanic activity
C.Martian subsurface:proof of complex ecosystems
D.Rocks from Mars with possible signs of ancient life

Evidence is mounting that modern medicines present a growing threat to
ecosystems around the world. The chemicals humans consume to stay healthy are
harming fish and other animals.Modern pharmaceuticals (have
revolutionized disease prevention and treatment. But after our bodies use
medicines, they discharge them.Eventually, the chemicals end up in rivers,
oceans,and soils.
This is a problem because medicines designed to treat humans can also affect
other species in serious ways. The chemicals can also pass through food webs and
affect animals higher up the chain.Urgent action is needed to design drugs that
work on humans but don't harm nature.
In the past two decades, studies have emerged showing the extent to which
medicines remain in nature. In 2018,a study of watercourses and surrounding
areas in Melbourne found more than 60 pharmaceutical compounds in aquatic
invertebrates and spiders.Research in 2022 examined pharmaceuticals in rivers in
104 countries of all continents.
So,how do we solve this problem?More effective and economical wastewater
treatments. From the beginning, drugs must be designed to decompose quickly
and fully after being excreted (by humans. It's possible for drug scientists
to alter the chemical and physical properties of drugs so that after humans excrete
them, the active ingredients change form to base substances such as carbon dioxide
and water.Regulation is needed to ensure "greener"drug development.Last
year, the International Pharmaceutical Federation took steps in this direction. The
global body, representing more than 4 million pharmacists and pharmaceutical

scientists, released a statement calling for all medicines to be tested for
environmental risk,
The European Medicines Agency has gone even further. It requires the
environmental risk of a medicine to be assessed before it's approved for use.The
assessment considers a medicine's chemical properties, potential ecological harm,
and the environment it may end up in,such as water or soil.Pharmaceutical
companies are also required to produce waste management plans that minimize
environmental impact.
Research has found Australia falls behind in introducing similar requirements
for environmental risk assessments for medicines.By prioritizing eco-friendly
practices, the pharmaceutical sector can contribute to a healthier planet while
continuing to provide safe and effective medicines.
32.What does the first paragraph emphasize about the impact of pharmaceuticals
on nature?
A.They help in disease prevention and treatment.
B.They may enter the natural environment eventually.
C.They have no direct effect on ecosystems.
D.They dissolve fully in natural waters.
33.What does paragraph 3 reveal about pharmaceuticals in nature?
A.They disappear from ecosystems after a few years.
B.Their presence is limited to certain regions.
C.They remain everywhere globally.
D.They are mostly removed by modern technology.
34.What is suggested as a solution to pharmaceutical pollution?
A.Stricter regulations on drug use.
B.Reduced consumption of modern drugs.
C.Increase in traditional medicine usage.
D.Development of drugs that naturally break down.
35.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A government policy guideline.
B.A pharmaceutical industry report.
C.A textbook chapter on environment.
D.A journal article on medicine research.

emotional experience related to a past memory that causes feelings
of
embarrassment,distress,shame or social anxiety.
It starts with your negativity bias ()You get really focused on things
you mess up on.37 For instance, you can probably remember every single
detail of the awkward interaction with others but probably can't remember the
details of the dozens of positive interactions that have happened since.
38_So the moments when they make“mess ups”or“mistakes”are
threats to their acceptance,or they believe those“mess ups”or“mistakes”are.
They may not actually be a threat, though.
There are ways to deal with embarrassing memories when they come up.It's
better to acknowledge that something made you feel temporarily embarrassed
while also acknowledging that it didn't affect you or your relationships in the long
term.During this moment, you can acknowledge that this awkward situation
happened back then.39 This allows you to move forward.
It's helpful to recognize that everyone make mistakes and that's okay.40
No one takes the things you do more personally than yourselves. You are always
operating from your own perspective, based on your own unique experiences, and
so is everyone else. Most likely, the memories you have might not look the same
to someone else as they do for you.
A.People just want to feel accepted and included.
B.And you lose perspective on all the things you do right.
C.This experience is sometimes referred to as a"cringe attack".
D.And remind yourself that it was the past and that this is the present.
E.These memories sometimes make people doubt their decision-making.
F.The other people involved might not have noticed the aggressive behavior.
G.Additionally,it might help to remember that people don't care as much as
you think.

That evening, the team stayed late at school to try to fix the problem. After hours of
troubleshooting,Ethan finally figured out what was wrong. One of the wires had come loose,
causing the motor to stop working. With renewed energy, the team worked together to reconnect
the wires and test the robot again. To their relief,it moved across the floor, picking up a pencil
just as they had planned."We did it!"Mia shouted excitedly. They couldn't believe that after all
the hard work, their robot was finally working again.
The next day,the students in the classroom were excited as each team presented their robot
to the school. When it was Ethan,Mia,and Carlos's turn, they demonstrated how their robot
could move around and pick up objects. The audience cheered as the robot performed perfectly.
Mrs Green smiled proudly."Great teamwork,you guys,"she said.After the presentation,the
team felt a sense of achievement. They had learned that working together and not giving up,
even when things seemed impossible, was the key to success. The robot project had taught them
more than how to build a machineit had taught them the power of persistence.
