In Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca National Park, there stands a “Chinese Pavilion”. It is a symbol of the early cultural exchange between China and Brazil. This pavilion is not only a beautiful viewing point, but also a symbol of early cultural exchanges between China and Brazil.
More than 200 years ago, a group of Chinese tea farmers crossed the ocean; to: Brazil, bringing with them tea seeds and the knowledge of tea planting. These farmers were like ambassadors of friendship, teaching the Brazilians how to grow and process tea. Soon after, Brazil became the first country in the Americas to grow tea on a large scale, and the third in the world after China and Japan. At the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair, Brazilian tea was highly praised.
To honor these Chinese tea farmers, the city of Rio de Janeiro built the “Chinese Pavilion” in 1903 symbolizing the bridge between the two nations that was “built by tea.” In the Rio Botanical Garden, there is an ancient tea tree grown from seeds brought by the Chinese tea farmers two centuries ago. A stone tablet in front of the tree is written in both Portuguese and Chinese, reading: “In 1812, the first Chinese to arrive in Brazil planted tea trees here, a witness to the friendship between China and Brazil.”

“Poor boy!” she thought. He’s all alone. It’s a shame. He needs some friends. She couldn’t stop thinking about him. She wanted to go and see him, but how could she go to his house without an invitation?

“Laurie is alone in the house now,” she thought. “Perhaps he’s looking out on his window.”
She put on her hat and an old coat and took a broom (扫帚) and a shovel (铁铲) from the kitchen.
“What are you going to do, Jo?” asked Meg when she saw her sister in the hall.
“I want to get some exercise,” answered Jo with a smile. “I’m going to clear the garden path.”
Laurie was standing at the window again. He wasn’t looking at her so she threw a snowball to get his attention. When the snow hit the glass, he turned his head at once and a big snowball changed his pale, sad face. Jo laughed and shouted, “How are you? Are you ill?”

You may have seen such a photo: with a long white beard (胡子) and wearing a bamboo hat, an old fisherman stands on a boat. Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became so famous online that many believed the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan renminbi banknote (纸币) was based on him. Sadly, Huang passed away at the age of 94 on Feb 18, 2023.
Huang gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008. He showed the true spirit of Lijiang River—being positive (积极的) and friendly. In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.
The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol of Guilin landscape (风景), commented Guangming Daily.
In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic (标志性的) landscapes in China. Each of them carries its own cultural value. For example, on the back of the5-yuan banknote is Mount Tai in Shandong. In ancient times, many emperors would go there and pray (祈祷) for the country. On the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because of the renminbi pictures, these places have attracted more tourists than before. Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a “banknote tour” when he was 21. “I want to finish a ceremonial (有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country,” Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.

Dear Sir,
I would like to recommend Sandy for this year’s Class Star.
Sandy is not only kind but also responsible. She actively participates in charity events, such as organizing book donations for rural children and visiting elderly homes. Additionally, she is passionate about protecting the environment. She teaches us how we can recycle waste and what we should do to reduce plastic use.
What makes Sandy truly special is her optimism and leadership. She always encourages classmates during tough times and plans creative group activities to boost teamwork. Her positive energy inspires everyone around her.
For these reasons, Sandy fully deserves the title of Class Star.
Yours sincerely,
Nancy
