He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs. Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way — from jazz to country. In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家) were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works. George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. 4. Many of Gershwin's musical works were ______. A. written about New Yorkers B. composed for Paul Whiteman C. played mainly in the countryside D. performed in various ways 5. What do we know about the concert organized by Whiteman? A. It attracted more people to theatres B. It proved jazz could be serious music C. It made Gershwin leader of the orchestra D. It caused a debate among jazz musicians 6. What did Gershwin do during his stay in Paris? A. He created one of his best works B. He studied with Nadia Boulanger C. He argued with French critics D. He changed his music style 7. Which of the following best describes Gershwin? A. Talented and productive. B. Serious and boring. C. Popular and unhappy. D. Friendly and honest. D 5. B 6. A 7. 根据第二段末句“Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.(多年来,从爵士乐到乡村音乐,人们以各种可能的方式演唱和演奏这些歌曲)”可知,其作品以不同的方式被演绎,故选D项。 根据第三段末句“It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.(这使他闻名世界,并表明爵士乐可以既严肃又流行)”可知,此次音乐会是证明了爵士也可以是严肃音乐,故选B项。 根据倒数第二段中“While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris.(在那里的时候,Gershwin写了An American in Paris)”及“But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.(George Gershwin出生于1898年,是美国最伟大的作曲家之一。他18岁时发表了第一首歌曲。在接下来的二十年里,他写了五百多首歌)”可知,他极具天赋,并且是多产的作曲家,故选A项。 C Do our genes truly determine how long we live? Or do our lifestyle and surroundings have a greater impact on our health? The latest study published in Nature Medicine reveals the answer to this question. Researchers studied data from more than 490,000 people in the UK Biobank. They focused on 45,000 participants whose blood samples were analyzed to measure their physical age compared to their actual age. “By studying proteins in the blood, we can get an estimation of how quickly or slowly each participant is aging biologically compared to their real age.” says lead researcher Austin Argentieri. This difference, called the “protein age gap,” strongly predicts a person's risk of death rate. However knowing that age gap is only part of the picture. Equally important is the cause of that gap. To determine that, the researchers analyzed over 100 environmental and lifestyle factors, including income, education, employment, marriage, smoking habits, and exercise routines. The results were striking. Environment and lifestyle accounted for 17% of people's diseaserelated risk of dying, compared to just 2% for genetics. Of the various environmental exposures, smoking was the riskiest behavior, linked to 21 diseases; social and economic factors were associated with 19 diseases; and a lack of physical activity was linked to 17 diseases. Positively, according to the research, living with a partner, being employed, and being financially comfortable had the greatest effect on extending lifespan (寿命)。 The research demonstrates changing habits, such as quitting smoking, exercising more, or improving social conditions through policies can greatly reduce health risks. The researchers think that the study is still on the way. In the future, they recommend looking more closely at multiple factors, including diet, exposure to novel diseases like bird flu, and environmental factors. All of these are potentially powerful influences on lifespan. 8. What does the term “protein age gap” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. The gap caused by genetic factors. B. The difference between mental and physical age. C. The difference between biological and real age. D. The time needed to repair damaged proteins. 9. What is the main finding of the research mentioned in the text? A. Physical activity alone extends lifespan significantly. B. Genetics plays a critical role in determining disease risks. C. Protein age gap has no connection with socioeconomic conditions. D. Environmental factors contribute more to disease risks than genetics. 10. How did researchers come to the conclusion of their research? A. By finding protein age gap and figuring out the cause. B. By studying and comparing data from the UK Biobank. C. By studying proteins and dividing them into groups. D. By analyzing and measuring their blood samples. 11. Which future research direction do the researchers suggest? A. Developing new drugs to slow biological aging. B. Carrying out policies to forbid smoking completely. C. Focusing on improving genetic testing accuracy. D. Exploring the effects of multiple factors on lifespan. C 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第三段““By studying proteins in the blood, we can get an estimation of how quickly or slowly each participant is aging biologically compared to their real age.” says lead researcher Austin Argentieri. This difference, called the “protein age gap,” strongly predicts a person's risk of death rate. (首席研究员奥斯汀·阿金蒂里说:“通过研究血液中的蛋白质,我们可以估计每个参与者的生理年龄与实际年龄相比的衰老速度。”这种被称为“protein age gap”的差异,能强烈预测一个人的死亡风险。)”可知,“protein age gap”指的是生理年龄与实际年龄之间的差异。故选C项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“The results were striking. Environment and lifestyle accounted for 17% of people's disease-related risk of dying, compared to just 2% for genetics. (研究结果令人震惊。环境和生活方式占人们疾病相关死亡风险的17%,而基因仅占2%。)”可知,研究的主要发现是环境因素比遗传因素对疾病风险的贡献更大。故选D项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“Researchers studied data from more than 490,000 people in the UK Biobank. They focused on 45,000 participants whose blood samples were analyzed to measure their physical age compared to their actual age. (研究人员研究了英国生物银行49万多名参与者的数据。他们重点关注了4.5万名参与者,通过分析他们的血液样本来测量他们的生理年龄与实际年龄的差异。)”以及后文对研究过程的描述可知,研究人员通过研究并比较英国生物银行的数据来得出了他们的研究结论。故选B项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“In the future, they recommend looking more closely at multiple factors, including diet, exposure to novel diseases like bird flu, and environmental factors. All of these are potentially powerful influences on lifespan. (未来,他们建议更仔细地研究多种因素,包括饮食、接触禽流感等新型疾病以及环境因素。所有这些都可能对寿命产生重大影响。)”可知,研究人员建议未来的研究方向是探索多种因素对寿命的影响。故选D项。 D The robots are coming! In science fiction that is usually a terrible warning. Even if we know robots are not literally the murderous machines of films in which the inventor loses control of his creation, they can inspire fear. In the real world, they are able to kill off well-pa id jobs in factories and warehouses. However, the latest advances in robotics will bring real and basic benefits. New “multimodal” AI models combine understanding of language and vision with data. This makes it possible to deal with robots using ordinary words. You can ask a robot what it is able to see or tell it to “pick up the yellow fruit”. Such models in effect allow robots a degree of common sense — in this case, knowing that a nearby banana is a kind of yellow fruit. You can tell a robot to adjust its behaviour simply by changing an instruction, something that would previously have required complex reprogramming. The new models enable robots to explain the reasoning behind their actions. That is useful when they behave in unexpected or unwelcome ways. So long as robots’ brains are not confusing black boxes, programming and debugging them is fairly straightforward, carefully examining its code and inner systems to check any mistakes. The new models are also less likely to make things up, as the way they perceive things is rooted in observations of the world, and they aim to ensure that cognitive and physical reality match. Labour markets across the rich world are tight and getting tighter as societies age. Advanced economies will need more automation (自动化) if they are to maintain their standards of living as they are aging rapidly. Without robots to help out, more people may have to work longer and retire later. In the coming years, attitudes could well change from fearing the arrival of robots to wishing that they would get here sooner. 12. In the real world, robots can cause people’s fear mainly because ________. A. they are often described as murderous machines in films B. they can take away well-paid jobs in some places C. they may lose control of their inventors D. they have a degree of common sense which is unexpected 13. The word “debugging” in paragraph 3 most closely means ________. A. locating and identifying errors B. controlling a robot’s movements C. creating new instructions for robots D. predicting future robot behaviors 14. What does the author’s attitude towards robots in an aging society?? A. Pessimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. “Robotic Threats: From Fiction to Reality”. B. “Multimodal AI: Bridging Language and Robotics”. C. “Aging Populations and the Automation Imperative”. D. “Shifting Perspectives: Robots as Solutions, Not Threats”. B 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第一段“In the real world, they are able to kill off well-pa id jobs in factories and warehouses.(在现实世界中,他们能够消灭工厂和仓库里高薪的工作)”可知,在现实世界中,机器人之所以会引起人们的恐惧,主要是因为它们会在一些地方夺走高薪的工作。 故选A。 根据最后一段“Labour markets across the rich world are tight and getting tighter as societies age. Advanced economies will need more automation (自动化) if they are to maintain their standards of living as they are aging rapidly. Without robots to help out, more people may have to work longer and retire later. In the coming years, attitudes could well change from fearing the arrival of robots to wishing that they would get here sooner.(随着社会老龄化,整个发达国家的劳动力市场都很紧张,而且越来越紧张。发达经济体在迅速老龄化的同时,如果要维持生活水平,就需要更多的自动化。如果没有机器人的帮助,更多的人可能不得不延长工作时间,推迟退休。在未来的几年里,人们的态度很可能会从害怕机器人的到来转变为希望它们能早点到来)”可知,作者对老龄化社会中的机器人持赞成态度。故选D。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“New “multimodal” AI models combine understanding of language and vision with data. This makes it possible to deal with robots using ordinary words.(新的“多模态”人工智能模型将语言和视觉的理解与数据结合起来。 Reading nonfiction books can help build determination and establish routines for many people. And this improved lifestyle will reduce their anxiety. When it comes to fiction, on the other hand, people often refuse to accept the idea. ____16____ The important benefit of reading fiction is that it will help change your angles. When you read a self-help book, you often consume a series of lessons with examples and practical advice. ____17____ Fiction, in contrast, gives you access to the struggles, and ideas of various characters. The exchange of information is multi-sided. When considering different angles on an event, you’ll realize you can’t control everything. ____18____ When we’re dealing with daily stress factors, we feel like the world is falling upon us. Characters in novels face challenges, but we as readers are separate from their experiences. As such, we have a bird’s eye view over what’s happening in the story. And this view is what we need to reduce our anxiety in the real world. Fiction stories help us understand the power of change in both stories and real life. Through stories, you are beginning a journey and witnessing progress in a fictional world. These changes are imaginary. ____19____ The Alchemist, for example, the main character is traveling for months to find a treasure. He believes that finding the prize will give him joy. Throughout his voyage, he experiences many setbacks, and his vision of the treasure changes. The boy’s evolution in The Alchemist reflects life. ____20____ But after many attempts, we realize that our heart wasn’t in it. A. We want something and we spend years chasing it. B. But they often mirror events that could happen in real life. C. We also experience many failures when pursuing our dreams. D. Consequently, most of the knowledge is passed on one-sidedly. E. Reading nonfiction is a well-established weapon against anxiety. F. Fiction gives us a precious chance to see the entire world from distance. G. In actual fact, reading fiction can also help you overcome your anxiety. G 17. D 18. F 19. B 20. 16题详解】 根据上文“Reading nonfiction books can help build determination and establish routines for many people. And this improved lifestyle will reduce their anxiety. When it comes to fiction, on the other hand, people often refuse to accept the idea.(对许多人来说,阅读非小说类书籍可以帮助他们树立决心,建立日常生活习惯。 【17题详解】 前文“The important benefit of reading fiction is that it will help change your angles. When you read a self-help book, you often consume a series of lessons with examples and practical advice. (阅读小说的一个重要好处是它能帮助你改变角度。当你阅读一本自助书籍时,你通常会阅读一系列的课程,包括例子和实用的建议。)”提到读自助类书籍时,读者会从中汲取一系列包含例子和实用建议的经验方法,这是一种单向的知识传递方式,D选项“Consequently, most of the knowledge is passed on one-sidedly.(因此,大多数知识是单方面传递的。)”与前文衔接紧密,符合逻辑。故选D。 【18题详解】 根据后文“When we’re dealing with daily stress factors, we feel like the world is falling upon us. Characters in novels face challenges, but we as readers are separate from their experiences. As such, we have a bird’s eye view over what’s happening in the story. (当我们处理日常压力因素时,我们觉得世界要压垮我们了。小说中的人物面临挑战,但我们作为读者与他们的经历是分开的。因此,我们对故事中发生的事情有一个鸟瞰视角。)”可知,此段主要讲阅读小说能让我们从一定距离看世界;F选项“Fiction gives us a precious chance to see the entire world from distance.(小说给了我们一个难得的机会从远处看整个世界。)” 【19题详解】 前文“Fiction stories help us understand the power of change in both stories and real life. Through stories, you are beginning a journey and witnessing progress in a fictional world. These changes are imaginary.(小说故事帮助我们理解故事和现实生活中变化的力量。通过故事,你开始了一段旅程,见证了一个虚构世界的进步。这些变化都是虚构的。)”指出小说中的变化是虚构的;空后“The Alchemist, for example, the main character is traveling for months to find a treasure. He believes that finding the prize will give him joy. Throughout his voyage, he experiences many setbacks, and his vision of the treasure changes. The boy’s evolution in The Alchemist reflects life.(以《炼金术士》为例,主角花了几个月的时间去寻找宝藏。他相信找到奖品会给他带来快乐。在整个航行过程中,他经历了许多挫折,他对宝藏的看法也发生了变化。《炼金术士》中男孩的进化反映了生活。)”举例说明小说中的变化反映生活,B选项“But they often mirror events that could happen in real life.(但它们常常反映了在现实生活中可能发生的事件)”承上启下,符合语境。故选B。 【20题详解】 根据根据上文“The Alchemist, for example, the main character is traveling for months to find a treasure. He believes that finding the prize will give him joy. Throughout his voyage, he experiences many setbacks, and his vision of the treasure changes. The boy’s evolution in The Alchemist reflects life.(以《炼金术士》为例,主角要花几个月的时间去寻找宝藏。他相信找到奖品会给他带来快乐。在整个航行过程中,他经历了许多挫折,他对宝藏的看法也发生了变化。《炼金术士》中男孩的进化反映了生活。)”可知,对待自己所多年追寻的东西的,最终态度可能会发生改变;A选项“We want something and we spend years chasing it.(我们想要某样东西,并且会花数年时间去追逐它。)”与后文“But after many attempts, we realize that our heart wasn’t in it.(但经过许多次反复尝试后,我们意识到我们内心并不真正想要它。)” 故选A。 As a little kid, I was fascinated by the inner workings of every device in my family’s home. Set in the 1930s American South, the story follows Atticus Finch, a lawyer defending a black man falsely accused of a crime. Through the eyes of his young daughter Scout, the novel explores themes of justice, compassion, and moral growth. I recommend this book because it challenges readers to confront prejudice and embrace empathy. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back. Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her handphone.” Keith looked at the handphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a handphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the handphone.” Mary could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?” Having made the decision, Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly. Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the handphone.” Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “Now you are lying too.” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest? Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don't we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying to talk some sense into him. That night, Keith turned over in bed from time to time. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mary was very happy to hear that. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 That night, Keith turned over in bed from time to time. The shiny new handphone in his drawer felt like a heavy stone weighing on his conscience. Images of the girl’s anxious face kept flashing in his mind — what if she needed the phone for an emergency? What if she cried over losing it? Guilt twisted in his stomach, and he sat up abruptly, staring at the moonlight streaming through the window. Finally, he whispered to the darkness, “I have to give it back.” Mary was very happy to hear that. She hugged Keith tightly and pointed to the phone number on the cover. “Let’s call her right now — she might still be awake worrying!” she urged. Half an hour later, the girl arrived at their doorstep, tears in her eyes. As she thanked them profusely, Keith placed the phone in her hands, his face warm but his heart lighter. Later, he found a small sticker in his bag from the girl: “Kindness shines brighter than any phone.” He smiled, realizing true happiness came not from possession, but from doing what was right. 词汇激活 行为类: ①闪现:flash/pop ②涌动,纠结:twist/churn ③强烈要求:urge/implore ④意识到:realize/be aware of 情感类: ①不安的:anxious/restless ②内疚:guilt/remorse 【点睛】[高分句型 1]. B George Gershwin, born in 1898, was one of America's greatest composers. C Do our genes truly determine how long we live? However, knowing that age gap is only part of the picture. D The robots are coming! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
