The concept of a milkman dropping off farm-fresh milk and cream on the doorstep seems old-fashioned, but it’s still something that happens in villages and small towns around the world. One such village is the centuries-old city of St. Albans in England.
For the past 47 years, Michael Tutton has filled that role. Each day, “Mick the Milk” was up before dawn to load his milk float, and then he’d visit with residents as he made his rounds. While he delivered milk, eggs, and other necessary items, he also remembered every family’s milestone. If someone had a birthday, he left a small piece of candy or special yogurt on their door. He loved doing charity runs and other events, raising thousands of dollars over the years that went right back into the community.
In 2023, his milk float was damaged beyond repair, and he decided it was time to retire. Naturally, his beloved residents couldn’t let him go without a proper send-off! Without telling him, they planned a big party for him.
Kate Crick, who organized Tutton’s retirement party, said, “We had Tutton delivering our milk for more than 45 years. He knows everyone and even remembers all the children from the streets.” Tutton has never learned to drive, but that has never stopped him. He would walk or get the bus from Welwyn to St. Albans, just to pick up the milk float and deliver milk to his loyal customers.
Tutton was moved by the support of his community, and sad to bid farewell to a job that had meant much more to him than income. “It was amazing and very emotional. I’m definitely going to keep in touch with everybody I can,” he continued. “My heart is there.”
It’s clear that this milkman made a huge impact on the world around him, simply by being kind, caring, and considerate of others. Congratulations on nearly 50 years on the job, Tutton!

A. He raised money by selling milk.
B. He started the delivery job in his forties.
C. He had a flexible work schedule.
D. He got along well with the locals.
5. What made Michael Tutton decide to retire?
A. His weak physical condition.
B. Increasing delivery distance.
C. His broken delivery float.
D. Low demand for milk delivery.
6. How did Michael Tutton feel on the day of his retirement?
A. Touched and sorrowful.
B. Excited and hopeful.
C. Anxious but relieved.
D. Disappointed but peaceful.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show a milkman’s devotion and kindness.
B. To introduce the influence of milk delivery.
C. To state milkmen’s challenges in rural areas.
D. To record a milkman’s retirement party.

Having been a taxi driver for 28 years, Anthony was accustomed to the “traditional” means of picking up passengers — either by waiting at taxi stands, or by picking up riders hailing cabs on the street. This had served him well-until the appearance of ride-hailing applications.
While younger taxi drivers are generally more willing to adapt to new technology such as ride-hailing applications, not all taxi drivers are open to it. Older drivers are generally more accustomed to “old-school” methods. “Customers always like to have something new... but for older taxi drivers, they will say the new model is difficult to accept,” said Anthony. “Due to increased competition from the ride-hailing platforms, many taxi drivers saw a decline in customers and their income took a drastic (猛烈的) hit.”
The number of taxis fell by about half between 2014 and 2022. Over the same period, the number of private hire vehicles increased by more than threefold. It is not just the older taxi drivers who are disadvantaged. Older commuters have also been forced to play the waiting game as taxi numbers decreased. Many of them prefer to wait at taxi stands. They have had to tolerate longer waiting times in the past few months just for a vacant taxi to pick them up.
Ms. Lim, a 63-year-old woman, takes taxis for crrands (差事) sometimes. “Sometimes there are just no taxis passing by, so I will wait longer than one hour,” she said. “I know ride-hailing is more convenient, but I just don’t know how to surf the web.”
Older taxi drivers and commuters are at a clear disadvantage in the technology-reliant society. But the good news is that taxi operators have rolled out initiatives to help the senior drivers. For drivers who are unfamiliar with how to use the technology, the operator provides them with training at its headquarters. By doing so, older drivers can not only use the applications, but also see the unique opportunities that driving a taxi can bring. Through their experience, they can also pick up passengers who can’t use ride-hailing apps.
8. What mainly caused the drop in Anthony’s income?
A. The poor condition of his taxi.
B. The development of public transport.
C. The less demand for cars in the market.
D. The popularity of a new taxi-calling approach.
9. What does Ms. Lim think of ride-hailing?
A. It is hard to adapt. B. It is seldom reliable.
C. It should be banned. D. It is time-consuming.
10. How are disadvantaged senior taxi drivers supported?
A. By informing them of the best pick-up routes.
B. By matching them with elderly passengers.
C. By developing custom-made apps for them.
D. By providing them with targeted training.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Taxi Services: A Dying Business in the Tech Wave.
B. A Taxi Revolution: Seniors’ Difficulties and Solutions.
C. Keeping Pace: Young Drivers’ Success in Ride-Hailing.
D. A Technology Era: Combine Old and New Transports.

In between the speedboats and wooden fishing boats in a Hong Kong harbor, a different kind of boat sails. It looks ordinary, but as the three-meter-long new unmanned boat moves skillfully through the water, it consumes waste floating on the surface. Wasted plastic water bottles and juice boxes travel through a gap in the front of the boat and move up a belt.
Around 33 billion pounds of plastic trash enter the oceans every year, according to Oceana, an ocean conservation group. The sight of this ever-growing marine litter is truly concerning. “We have garbage trucks for the land. Why don’t we have something to clean the water?” said Sidhant Gupta, the co-founder of the marine-tech startup Clearbot, which developed the boat.
Clearbot is trying to change that with its autonomous boats. The boats can provide data by algorithms and analyze what items are being collected so that they can help people stop the flow of waste into waterways. And the boats don’t stop at collecting waste. There are many other “dull, dirty or dangerous” jobs that Clearbot’s boats are capable of. Equipped with sensors and tools, they can map the bottom of waterways, test water quality and collect samples.
Due to the massive need for marine clean-up, Clearbot is now focused on scaling up. Gupta hopes to have 20 boats put into use by next year, and 50 in operation within two years. “You should be able to see these in the harbors and think it’s so normal,” said Gupta. “We want it to be used widely.”
Some worry that too many boats will also cause pollution. But Gupta doesn’t think so. This boat has an impressive energy system. It has solar panels on top and an 8-hour battery, which can store the energy and enable it to operate without relying on traditional energy sources. “The fleet has the potential to protect the marine ecology and turn to pollution-free marine operations across a range of uses by replacing fossil fuel-powered boats,” said Gupta.
12. What drives Sidhant Gupta to develop this new boat?
A. Lack of transport boats. B. Needs of local fishermen.
C. Increase in marine litter. D. Waste of water resources.
13. What can we know about the performance of the boat?
A. It is multi-functional.
B. It works better underwater.
C. It requires manual operation.
D. It can avoid risky situations.
14 What does the underlined phrase “scaling up” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Selling abroad. B. Functioning well.
C. Building harbors. D. Adding production.
15. What is the boat expected to do in marine operations?
A. To achieve zero carbon emissions.
B. To help conduct research on marine ecology.
C. To develop deep-sea fossil fuels.
D. To improve efficiency of marine operations.

Max, 17, is a senior at Ransom Everglades School in Florida. He loved basketball more than anything in the world. He would spend hours every day practicing his dribbling (运球) and shooting. He dreamed of one day becoming professional basketball player and playing in the NBA.
Max’s town had a small basketball court that was often empty. Max would go there every day after school to practice. One day, as he was practicing shooting, he heard a voice behind him.
“Nice shot, kid,” the voice said.
Max turned around to see a tall man with a friendly smile. The man introduced himself as Coach Johnson of a basketball club named Florida Tiger, and asked Max if he wanted to join his team.
Max was overjoyed. He had never played on a team before and couldn’t wait to start. The team was made up of kids from all over the state, and they practiced every day after school. Max quickly became the star player of the team. He was fast, agile (灵活的), and had an incredible shot. At first, Max trained well and scored a lot of points in some mini competitions, relying on his super high shooting percentage. But Coach Johnson soon noticed a problem: Max played as if he were alone on the court, never communicating or collaborating with his teammates.
Johnson communicated with Max about his problem many times, but Max remained unconvinced, “I’ve scored enough points using my shooting ability. I don’t see how it’s something that needs to be changed. ”
The next game was with The Bolles School. It was Max’s first time playing in the Intercollegiate Major Competition. He was nervous, but more than that, he was confident. The big day finally came. Before the game, Coach Johnson made a final plea (请求) for Max to focus on passing and teamwork. Max simply nodded before heading to the court, his mind set on proving his talent.

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. B

14. What does the underlined phrase “scaling up” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Selling abroad. B. Functioning well.
C. Building harbors. D. Adding production.
15. What is the boat expected to do in marine operations?
A. To achieve zero carbon emissions.
B. To help conduct research on marine ecology.
C. To develop deep-sea fossil fuels.
D. To improve efficiency of marine operations.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。

Falling behind, Max knew he must change.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
With all players ready, the game began. Max quickly became the center of attention, relying on his outstanding shooting skills. However, his opponents were stronger and sharper this time. They seemed to have noticed Max’s problem and designed a strategy to stop him. Their defence was perfectly-organized, like a wall. Soon, Max found himself cornered and his shots blocked. The frustration was overwhelming, his usual skills and precision deserting him. Seeing the scoreboard, he felt a sense of tension.
Falling behind, Max knew he must change. Recalling Coach Johnson’s words, Max found a way out. He began to pass the ball and create opportunities for his teammates. Gradually, the situation changed. Their opponents’ seemingly unbreakable defence was broken down as Max and his teammates worked together. In the dying seconds, with the score neck and neck, a well-timed pass found its way to Max. Shouldering the trust, he made the final shot. The court was silent, the clock ticking. The ball flew gracefully in the air and finally went through the net. They won! The cheers burst out, but deep down, Max understood the victory was due to team cooperation.
