When I was a kid, I would spend summer weeks with Granny and Grandaddy in Waycross, GA, Though poor, they spoiled me with love. Both of them were very special to me, especially my Grandaddy,
He became blind around 20 years of age, yet his blindness never slowed him down. He served as a county commissioner for several years, worked the concession stand (小卖部) at the courthouse, cooked lunch, and washed dishes while my Granny worked. As a boy, I would watch him closely, studying how he moved around the house from room to room as if he could see. I was impressed by how he transitioned from cooking to washing the dishes, never missing a beat.
At the concession stand, customers would give him money, and he would return the correct change and provide them exactly what they ordered. When things were slow, he would put his hands together and twiddle (摆弄) his thumbs, which I found fascinating. I enjoyed helping out, feeling grown-up as I handed customers their drinks and snacks.
It seemed like every time I stayed with them, in the evening we would visit someone who was sick or attend a viewing for someone who had passed away. Despite his blindness, nothing will slow him down or stop him from working and caring for others. His love for people was boundless. During those weeks, he taught me many lessons that still resonate with me today. I often think about him and sometimes catch myself when I am pondering at the beach, putting my hands together and twiddling my thumbs. I’m grateful for the time I spent with him. To this day, I dislike hearing someone say “I can’t do that” because I knew a blind man who never uttered those words.
4. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. The grandfather’s blindness limited his daily activities.
B. The grandfather’s perseverance and adaptability despite blindness.
C. The author’s childhood memories of cooking with his grandparents.
D. The challenges of running a concession stand at the courthouse.
5. How did the author feel when helping at the concession stand?
A. Bored and restless. B. Optimistic and helpful.
C. Proud and mature. D. Embarrassed and shy.
6. Why does the author dislike hearing people say “I can’t do that”?
A. Because Grandaddy often used this phrase.
B. Because Grandfather proved that disabilities do not limit one’s capabilities.
C. Because his granny taught him to avoid negative language.
D. Because he believes it shows a lack of creativity.
7. Which proverb best reflects the main message of the passage?
A. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
B. All good things come to an end.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C
If your day starts with a harsh alarm sound, you might want to rethink your wake-up routine. New research from the University of Virginia’s School of Nursing suggests that the way you’re waking up could be putting unnecessary stress on your heart.
Nursing doctoral student Yeonsu Kim studied 32 participants and found that being forced awake — like by a loud phone alarm — can lead to a significant morning blood pressure surge. This happens when your body is suddenly shifted from sleep to wakefulness. And it was found to be 74% higher in participants who were awakened by an alarm after five hours of sleep compared to those who woke up naturally. And that’s no small concern — morning blood pressure surges have been linked to serious cardiovascular (心血管的) risks, including stroke and heart attack.
The increase in blood pressure activates your sympathetic nervous system — the same system that sets off the “fight or flight” response. That can lead to a rapid heartbeat, anxiety, exhaustion, and even physical symptoms like headaches and nosebleeds.
The good news? There are better, healthier ways to greet the day. Instead of relying on harsh alarms, many people are turning to gentler methods — and research backs them up. One popular option is a gradual light alarm, also known as a sunrise alarm clock. These devices imitate the rising sun by slowly increasing in brightness over a set period of time. The gentle light helps signal your body to reduce melatonin (褪黑激素) production and transition into wakefulness more naturally, reducing dizziness and morning stress.
There are also alarm apps that use soft music or nature sounds that gradually get louder, helping you wake without shocking your system. A 2020 study even found that melodic sounds — like a song you can sing along with — help reduce sleep inertia, a sleepy, heavy feeling that can linger for hours after waking up.
Small changes can make a big difference in how your body starts the day and your heart will thank you for it!
8. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “surge” in Paragraph 2?
A. a steady rhythm B. a slow decline
C. a sudden increase D. a hidden danger
9. What physical symptoms can be caused by activating the sympathetic nervous system?
A. Reduced melatonin levels. B. Slower heartbeat.
C. Improved sleep quality. D. Nervousness and tiredness.
10. What can be inferred from the research findings mentioned in the passage?
A. People who wake up naturally never experience morning blood pressure surges.
B. Reducing melatonin production immediately improves cardiovascular health.
C. Gradual waking methods may lower the risk of heart-related diseases.
D. Loud alarms are the primary cause of strokes and heart attacks worldwide.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To persuade us to stop using alarms.
B. To explain the dangers of sudden wake-up methods.
C. To compare different types of alarm sounds.
D. To criticize modern sleep habits.
D
A gig is a part-time job performed by freelance (自由职业的) workers for a limited amount of time. The term “gig economy” is broadly described as “economic activity that involves the use of temporary or freelance workers to perform jobs typically in the service sector”. For instance, driving for a ride-share company; delivering groceries; performing home maintenance duties; selling handmade goods and renting your home, etc.
According to the ADP Editorial Team, the gig economy arose from several factors: the 2007-2008 financial crisis, during which more people with traditional jobs needed “side jobs” to keep their heads above water; the tech explosion that allowed people to work from virtually anywhere; and the emergence of apps and websites such as Airbnb (2008), Uber (2009), and Postmates (2011).
Although the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily paused the growth of the gig economy, the industry has continued to grow and increase in value.
So, is the gig economy good for us?
Some people believe the gig economy offers job flexibility. For many younger workers who are not interested in the traditional “nine-to-five” job, gig work allows for flexibility in working hours and the kind of work pursued, giving them a fair amount of freedom.
Meanwhile, the gig economy provides extra income. As Encyclopedia Britannica Money noted, “We could all use a little extra cash in our pockets every now and then. One way to give a boost to your monthly budget is to pick up some side-job income in your free time.” Joining the gig economy cannot only ease stress caused by limited savings, but it can also provide quick money for anything from a medical emergency to a vacation.
However, the gig economy creates job insecurity. Gig workers do not have a permanent job and routinely face the risk of losing income. A study of gig workers in Australia reported that they face “higher rates of stress than the general population” because of the “uncertainty, unpredictability, and instability of both schedules and income earned”.
12. The phrase “keep their heads above water” in Paragraph 2 most likely means ________.
A. avoid their heads from sinking under water
B. invest in new technology
C. cover basic living expenses
D. start a small business
13. Why does the author mention the COVID-19 pandemic in Paragraph 3?
A. To show the gig economy is declining.
B. To explain why people need extra income.
C. To criticize the risks of gig jobs during crises.
D. To emphasize its temporary impact on gig work.
14. What is a key difference between gig workers and traditional employees?
A. Traditional jobs offer more financial security.
B. Gig workers have fixed working hours.
C. Gig workers need no special skills.
D. Traditional jobs are all in the service sector.
15. Which title best summarizes the passage?
A. The Gig Economy: Freedom or Uncertainty
B. The Gig Economy: A Revolution in Flexible Work
C. From Uber to Airbnb: How Technology Shaped Modern Jobs
D. Freelancing: Independence or Financial Risk

Michael shared a home — and an unbreakable bond — with his blind father. Though he spent every game on the sidelines, his father never failed to cheer from the stands, rain or shine. Despite being the smallest in his high school class, Michael felt his father’s unwavering support, “Play because you love it,” his father would say, “not because you have to.” With passion, Michael vowed to give his all at every practice, dreaming of finally stepping onto the field.
All through high school Michael never skipped a drill or a game, yet the bench remained his only companion. His father, however, never missed a moment, his voice booming encouragement above the crowd’s roar.
When entering college, Michael decided to try out for the team as a “walk-on.” Everyone thought he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach kept him, not for his size, but for his relentless efforts. “You inspire the others,” the coach admitted. Overjoyed, Michael called his father, who wept tears of pride. For the following years, Michael attended every practice, his dedication unbroken — though the field remained out of reach.
The week of Michael’s final playoff game tragedy struck. As he jogged onto the practice field, the coach handed him a telegram. After reading it, he became deathly silent... Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?” The coach’s arm wrapped around him. “Take the week off, son.”
Saturday arrived, and the team trailed (落后) by ten points in the third quarter. Suddenly, a figure emerged — Michael, silent and determined, put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were astounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon. “Coach, let me play!” Michael pleaded. The coach frowned — no way would he risk the game on his least-experienced player. Yet Michael’s eyes, burning with resolve, refused to back down.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The coach hesitated, then gestured Michael to enter.

B 5. C 6. B 7. A

根据第二段中“He became blind around 20 years of age, yet his blindness never slowed him down. He served as a county commissioner for several years, worked the concession stand (小卖部) at the courthouse, cooked lunch, and washed dishes while my Granny worked. (他在20岁左右失明了,但失明从未让他放慢脚步。他担任了几年的县专员,在法院的小卖部工作,在我奶奶工作时做饭、洗碗)”可知,祖父虽然失明,但仍能在很多方面坚持工作和生活,体现了他的毅力和适应能力。所以第二段主要讲的是祖父尽管失明却有着毅力和适应能力。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“I enjoyed helping out, feeling grown up as I handed customers their drinks and snacks. (我喜欢帮忙,当我把饮料和小吃递给顾客时,感觉自己长大了)”可知,作者在小卖部帮忙时觉得自己长大了,也就是感到自豪和成熟。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Despite his blindness, nothing will slow him down or stop him from working and caring for others.
通读全文,结合第二段中“He became blind around 20 years of age, yet his blindness never slowed him down. He served as a county commissioner for several years, worked the concession stand (小卖部) at the courthouse, cooked lunch, and washed dishes while my Granny worked. (他在20岁左右失明了,但失明从未让他放慢脚步。他担任了几年的县专员,在法院的小卖部工作,在我奶奶工作时做饭、洗碗)”和最后一段中“Despite his blindness, nothing will slow him down or stop him from working and caring for others. (尽管他失明了,没有什么能让他放慢脚步或阻止他工作和照顾他人)”可知,祖父虽然失明,但凭借着坚定的意志,做了许多事情。这充分说明了只要有决心,没有什么是不可能的。所以“Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.(有志者事竟成)”反映了文章的主旨。故选A项。

根据第二段中“Nursing doctoral student Yeonsu Kim studied 32 participants and found that being forced awake — like by a loud phone alarm — can lead to a significant morning blood pressure surge. (护理博士生Yeonsu Kim对32名参与者进行了研究,发现被强迫唤醒 —— 比如被响亮的手机闹钟叫醒 —— 会导致早晨血压显著……)”和后文“And that’s no small concern — morning blood pressure surges have been linked to serious cardiovascular risks, including stroke and heart attack.(这是一个不小的问题 —— 早晨血压……与严重的心血管风险有关,包括中风和心脏病发作)”可推知,早晨被被强迫唤醒会让血压突然上升。划线词surge的意思是“突然增加”,与C项“a sudden increase”同义。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The increase in blood pressure activates your sympathetic nervous system — the same system that sets off the “fight or flight” response. That can lead to a rapid heartbeat, anxiety, exhaustion, and even physical symptoms like headaches and nosebleeds. (血压升高会激活你的交感神经系统 —— 也就是引发“战斗或逃跑”反应的系统。这可能会导致心跳加速、焦虑、疲惫,甚至出现头痛和流鼻血等身体症状)”可知,交感神经系统被激活会导致紧张和疲惫。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“And that’s no small concern — morning blood pressure surges have been linked to serious cardiovascular risks, including stroke and heart attack.(这是一个不小的问题 —— 早晨血压飙升与严重的心血管风险有关,包括中风和心脏病发作)”以及第四段中“Instead of relying on harsh alarms, many people are turning to gentler methods — and research backs them up.
C 13. D 14. A 15. A

故填which。
故填a。
both…and… 和……”,用于连接并列内容,此处用于连接“(their joyful) attitude”和“dreams (for a bright future)”。故填and。
故填were。
故填with。

The week of Michael’s final playoff game, tragedy struck.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The coach hesitated, then gestured Michael to enter.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The stadium erupted as Michael scored the winning goal.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The coach hesitated, then gestured Michael to enter. With his heart pounding like thunder, Michael rushed onto the field, father’s encouraging words echoing through his mind. Small as he was, every movement revealed years of unyielding determination. Driven by memories of his father’s persistent cheers, he charged forward. The opposing team could not stop him. Michael spun skillfully, leaving all defenders behind. Gradually yet surely, his team started to gain the upper hand, and the score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, Michael intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown.
The stadium erupted as Michael scored the winning goal. Embraceing him tightly, the coach marveled, “Kid, how did you work such a miracle?” Eyes glinting with brimming tears, Michael turned slowly. “Well, sir, you knew my dad had passed away...” Pausing briefly, he swallowed hard, as if summoning every ounce of courage. “Blind as he was, Dad never missed a game — a silent yet ever-present spectator. But today he could actually witness me in action, and I made it real!” With a gentle touch on the weathered bench whose surface bearing their shared memories, Michael knew true victory lay in perseverance rather than glory.
