Reyes Guana, 42, grew up in a poor Mexican family. He has seven brothers and sisters. His parents always had two jobs to make ends meet.
As a boy, Guana had a good relationship with the school cleaner. He called her “Nike” because she wore Nike shoes. The boy liked how Nike made everything clean. He told her he wanted to be a cleaner, too. “Well, it’s good if you want to be a cleaner,” Nike told little Guana. “But make sure you go to college.”
Guana also looked up to the principal (校长) of his school. The school leader told the boy that his job was to help students and teachers. “Wow, when I grow up, I want to do what you’re doing,” Guana told him. “Well, if you stick to your dream, you will,” the principal replied.
And Guana really got there. But it was quite a long journey for him. Twenty-three years ago, he followed in Nike’s footsteps and was cleaning schools. He worked at three schools to pay for his college education. He held that job for four years and then worked his way up to being a school safety monitor (监察员). After that, he worked as a teacher for a few years.
Now, as a principal, Guana never forgets where he came from. He helps students from poor families and shows respect for every school staff member. He always invites everyone to school parties, including the school cleaners and the school bus drivers.

Joey was happy because he had many special friends—four squirrels (松鼠), two rabbits, and many colorful birds. At the meal time, these wild animals came near to the family and they would feed these special friends.
In the large yard stood thirteen trees of different sizes. One day, while Joey was playing with his sister under the trees, he noticed that a tree trunk (树干) had a sad look. So Joey went to the sad tree and asked, “Why are you unhappy?”
“I am the smallest tree around. The birds don’t fly to me. The rabbits don’t eat grass under me. The squirrels don’t climb to my top. Nobody needs me or loves me,” replied the sad tree.

There are many different ways to solve a problem. One way is to be creative. People often think creative thinking is just for artists and designers, but this is not true. Dr. Edward de Bono, an expert in creative thinking and problem solving, has shown the world that using creativity to solve problems is very useful in business and in our communities.
One example of creative thinking is the solution to a parking problem in a town center. In the areas close to stores, people can only park for 20 minutes. There are parking meters where people pay to park in these areas. However, the problem is that many people leave their cars there for longer than 20 minutes. Dr. Edward de Bono’s solution is to make a rule that all cars parked in these areas must keep their headlights on. Of course, drivers will want to return to their cars before their car batteries (蓄电池) die.
To help people think more creatively, Dr. Edward de Bono designed the “Six Thinking Hats” system (系统). The system helps people think about a problem in different ways in order to find a solution. In the system, there are six imaginary hats of different colors. Each hat symbolizes a different way of thinking. For example, the white hat helps people consider the facts. The black hat is the most logical (有逻辑的) and helps people consider why a possible solution may not work. So, next time you have a problem in your community, think about it creatively, from different perspectives, and see what ideas you have.
13. What is the subject of the text?
A. Being a creative artist in the community. B. Doing business successfully in the future.
C. Asking experts for some useful advice. D. Using creative thinking to solve problems.
14. Why is the example mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To express a result. B. To describe a problem.
C. To support the subject. D. To list some numbers.
15. What does the underlined word “perspectives” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A Sides. B. Places. C. People. D. Rules.
16. What can we know about the “Six Thinking Hats” system?
A. The system is used to help people think quickly.
B. The white hat helps people think about the facts.
C. The black hat has to do with people's feelings.
D. Six hats of different shapes can be very helpful.

After knowing the reason, the family had a meeting. Joey suggested making some seats under the sad tree. Joey’s father said he could help with that. The family would sit under the tree and the tree wouldn’t feel sad anymore.
When Joey told his special friends the tree was sad, they decided to do what they could to help make the sad tree happy again.
Early the next morning, when Joey woke up, he noticed birds singing happily in the little tree and saw squirrels running up and down in it. Rabbits were eating the fresh grass around the tree. The little tree was happy again.
Joey ran inside to tell the good news to his family. Joey’s mother and father went into the yard and saw the happy tree.

C Asking experts for some useful advice. D. Using creative thinking to solve problems.
14. Why is the example mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To express a result. B. To describe a problem.
C. To support the subject. D. To list some numbers.
15. What does the underlined word “perspectives” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Sides. B. Places. C. People. D. Rules.
16. What can we know about the “Six Thinking Hats” system?
A The system is used to help people think quickly.
B. The white hat helps people think about the facts.
C. The black hat has to do with people's feelings.
D. Six hats of different shapes can be very helpful.

“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me I should do this, and should not do that. It sometimes makes me angry,” said Wang Tao, a middle school student. Do you have the same problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago. Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes?
One of the biggest things is when someone becomes a parent, he or she likes worrying They worry about everything about you, from the time you were born. They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry, because they care about you and worry about you. They worry about your choice of friends, the food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc. All these things are part of your life. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Call them if you stay somewhere else later than usual. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Take responsibility for what you have done. Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need help you can give them. Someday, when you become a parent, they may be able to help you how to get on with your children.
