A Language-Art Project 2025: Events And Online Exhibition Now Live The annual Language-Art Project brings international students of our university together to share and discuss all things about language and create language-themed art. Our online exhibition for 2025 is now available, with the artworks divided into 4 interrelated themes. 18 Works in various styles: ·Mother-tongue by Alice Ji-Won Kim digs deep into the relationship between language and identity. ·In her digital painting The Journey of Numbers, Shuhan (Linda) Wang illustrates the evolution of numbers in Chinese culture. ·An Ode to Reverie Valley by Noorisha Singh combines calligraphy with the Newar heritage of Nepal. ·In A Dialogue Between Machines, Natthasit Suksangpleng uses video to explore the limits of AI in imitating real, delicate human conversation. Besides links to our 2025 galleries categorised by theme, the web page also has an archive (存档) of Language-Art exhibitions from previous years. From 27 July to 26 August, the exhibition of Language-Art Project will also be open to the public at our Window Galleries. Related events: 29 July: An online seminar (研讨会), where some of the students who took part in this year’s project will talk about their works. Find out more and apply online. 31 July: An informal “find out more” event at High Holborn, where you can learn more about the project and interact face to face with students who have taken part. Find out more and book a ticket. 1. What is a feature of the exhibition? A. It displays 18 related themes. B. It shows Chinese calligraphy culture. C. It integrates language with art. D. It presents previous works with videos. 2. For a tech enthusiast, which piece of work is worth recommending? A. Mother-tongue. B. The Journey of Numbers. C. An Ode to Reverie Valley. D. A Dialogue Between Machines. 3. How can visitors meet the project participants in person? A. Engaging in the seminar. B. Visiting the Window Galleries . C. Applying through web page. D. Attending the event on 31 July. B Hearing the speeding cars passing us, I had to focus on the sound of my uncle’s bicycle leading the way. At thirty, with my retinas (视网膜) dying from an eye disease, driving a car was impossible and I couldn’t give up the freedom of riding my bike. Uncle Fred pedalled steadily. I biked a few inches behind. He shouted directions at each intersection. Suddenly, his voice rose with urgency, “Carol, stop! A car is turning.” When we reached our destination, my shoulders ached from the ride. As I sat next to Uncle Fred, he cleared his throat and said, “Carol, did you think about getting a trained Seeing Eye dog? It can give you independence.” He knew I was afraid of dogs. Words stuck in my throat. But his voice cracked and planted the seed of an idea. My world shrunk as my blindness grew worse. Luckily, I had a good sense of direction, allowing me to visualize neighborhood routes. This skill could be an advantage when working with a dog. After calculating, I finally called the guide dog school. The admission application arrived, but I still wasn’t sure. One day, I phoned my friend Robert, a longtime guide dog user in my town. He shared his positive experiences. Somehow, his words convinced me to give it a try. During the training, the dog trainer’s coaching and each successful walk with the dogs built my confidence. As my guide dog Misty and I bonded, my shoulders relaxed. When I returned home, Uncle Fred was the first to meet Misty. Misty sat at our feet waving her tail. She must have picked up on the positive energy that circled us like a hug. Misty drove away my anxiety as I slowly opened my heart to her. Just as Uncle Fred had predicted, overcoming my fear gave me the opportunity for more independence. My new confidence came from using a guide dog, allowing me to walk tall. Uncle Fred’s advice moved my sense of joy from my bike to my dog. 4. What drove the author to ride a bike? A. Getting prepared for driving a car. B. Treating her disease by taking exercise. C. Getting familiar with noisy background. D. Enjoying the freedom of moving around. 5. How did the author react to her uncle’s suggestion? A. She thought it worth a try. B. She drew up a practical plan. C. She was stuck in desperation. D. She refused it for fear of dogs. 6. Why did the author call Robert? A. To invite him to adopt a dog. B. To ask him about the application. C. To encourage him to be positive in life. D. To consult him about taking a guide dog. 7. What change did Misty bring to the author? A. She became confident about fighting the illness. B. She became more attached to her uncle for help. C. She gained her independence with Misty’s help. D. She formed her community of guide dog trainers. C While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors — drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing, a new study finds that there’s another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms. These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary (不爱活动的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors. The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression. The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.” Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders. 8 Which teenager probably belongs to the “invisible group”? A. A teenager who drinks frequently. B. A teenager who exercises regularly. C. A teenager who skips school. D. A teenager who suffers from a lack of sleep. 9. What can we know about the new study? A. It was conducted by analyzing and comparing the previous data. B. It was intended to dig into the reasons for depression. C. It revealed an alarming rate of the invisible group suffering depression. D. Its findings were under expectation of the research team. 10. What is Carli’s attitude toward the findings? A. Conservative. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Indifferent. 11. The author wrote this passage to ________. A. introduce a new therapy for teens’ mental disorder B. warn about the unobserved signals for teens’ mental problems C share a novel psychological experiment with teens D. caution teens against developing unhealthy habits D Climate change leads to threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100,a new study has found. Even by 2050 some coastlines could be hard to make out from what we see today, with 10% to 12% facing serious erosion (侵蚀). Using updated sea level rise predictions, the researchers analyzed how beaches around the world would be in a future with higher seas and more damaging storms. They also considered natural processes like wave erosion, as well as human factors - like coastal building developments, all of which can affect a beach’ s health. The study found that sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors, and if countries do not cut pollution quickly, rising seas could permanently destroy beaches and coastal towns in the near future. Additionally, the more greenhouse gases humans release into the air, the greater the negative impact on beaches worldwide will become. It’s hard to overstate just how important the world’s beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world’s coastlines and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also important economic engines, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities. And in some areas, the beach is more than a vacation destination. In places like Australia, life near the coast surrounds the beach for much of the year. Some of the world’s most popular beaches are already taking actions. Places like Miami Beach are bringing in large amounts of sand by truck to fix coastlines severely damaged by waves. Meanwhile, some areas have built protective walls to try to keep the sand from washing away. But scientists say the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, while rising seas, more powerful storms as well as a warmer climate may make this a losing battle. However, the researchers did find that humans have some control over what happens to the world’s beaches. If the world’s governments can continue cutting greenhouse gas pollution, the researchers found that 22% of projected beach losses by 2050 could be prevented, a number that grows to 40% by 2100 if greenhouse gases are limited. 12. Which of the following mainly causes serious beach erosion? A. Wave erosion. B. Human factors. C Damaging storms. D. Rising sea levels. 13. What can we infer from Paragraph 3? A. Storms damage one third of the world’s coastlines. B. Significance of beaches can’t be underestimated. C. Tourism may cause damage to beach conservation. D. Beaches are the only economic engine for Australia. 14. How do scientists think of the actions taken to protect beaches? A. Costly but ineffective. B. Efficient but not enough. C. Influential but slow. D. Comprehensive but not sustainable. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. Actions have been taken to protect beaches. B. Beaches are facing the threat of disappearing. C. Life in coastal areas mainly relies on beaches. D. There exist challenges to protect eroded beaches. DeepSeek: A Rising Star in the AI Field In recent years, the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has witnessed remarkable advancements, and one name that has been making waves is DeepSeek. ____16____ DeepSeek is an innovative AI technology developed by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. Every weekend, he would go to his grandfather’s house, although he didn’t particularly enjoy it. His grandfather was very strict with Peter. He demanded that Peter develop two good habits: being punctual (准时的) and staying organized. To help his grandson develop these habits, the grandfather took certain measures. For instance, Peter had to be in the dining room sharply at 12:00 noon for lunch, or else he would have no meal. Peter sometimes felt that his grandfather was too strict, but he dared not voice his dissatisfaction. This week was no exception. Peter arrived at his grandfather’s house as usual. His grandfather was busy cooking in the kitchen, the smell of the food filling the air. Peter, left on his own, wandered into the living room to play. There, he accidentally knocked over the first-aid kit that was placed on the table. The contents in the kit spilled all over the floor, small bottles of pills scattered everywhere. Peter paid no attention to the chaos he had caused. He glanced at the mess, then remembered that David, his friend from next door, was home alone. Awakened by the thought of watching cartoons with David, Peter hurried next door, leaving the spilled contents of the first-aid kit behind. In the kitchen, the grandfather, who was chopping vegetables, suddenly felt unwell. His heart began to race, and he realized that he was having a heart attack. He struggled to the living room to get his medicine. However, when he got there, all he saw was the overturned first-aid kit and the pills scattered on the floor. The grandfather bent down with difficulty, his heart racing with anxiety as he searched for the blue bottle that contained his heart medicine. The precious seconds ticked by, and he felt his strength fading. Time was running out, and Peter didn’t know it. The little boy was completely unaware of the danger his grandfather was facing, immersed in the fun of the cartoon, laughing from time to time. The clock struck 12 but the cartoon was still five minutes away from ending. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, after a desperate search, Peter spotted the small blue bottle hidden under the sofa. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 湛江市第二中学2024—2025学年第二学期 高二级英语试卷 (答题时间:120分钟,总分120分) 第一部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分50分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A Language-Art Project 2025: Events And Online Exhibition Now Live The annual Language-Art Project brings international students of our university together to share and discuss all things about language and create language-themed art. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据文章第二段“These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary (不爱活动的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.(这些青少年使用大量的媒体,睡眠不足,久坐不动。当然,这可能听起来像是对地球上每一个青少年的描述。但该研究警告说,那些极端地从事这三种行为的青少年才是真正处于危险境地的人。因为他们的行为通常不会被视为危险信号,这些年轻人被该研究的作者称为“隐形风险”群体。)”可知,“隐形风险”组是指那些过度使用媒体、睡眠不足且生活方式不爱活动的青少年。故乡D。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.(在所有九种危险行为中得分较高的那一组最有可能出现抑郁症状;总的来说,这一组中有近15%的人患有抑郁症,而低风险组中只有4%的人患有抑郁症。但隐形人群的情况并不比高危人群差多少,其中超过13%的人表现出抑郁。)”可知,研究揭示了“隐形风险”组青少年患抑郁症的惊人比例,即超过13%的该组青少年表现出抑郁症状,这与高风险组的比例相近。故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第四段“The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger--nearly one third of our sample—that it became a key finding of the study.”(这些发现让Carli措手不及。“我们没有预料到这一点,”他说。“高风险组和低风险组是显而易见的,但第三组不仅出乎意料。它是如此独特,如此之大——几乎占我们样本的三分之一——这成为了这项研究的一个关键发现。”)”可知,Carli对研究结果感到意外,没有预料到会有这样的发现,因此他对研究结果的态度是怀疑的。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.(Carli说,他研究最重要的一点是,它为父母、老师和精神卫生保健提供者提供了新的早期预警信号。 B。 D Climate change leads to threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100,a new study has found. C. Damaging storms. 12. D 13. B 14. A 15. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: The clock struck 12 but the cartoon was still five minutes away from ending. Although Peter really wanted to finish watching the cartoon, he tore himself away from the cartoon and went home. As soon as Peter walked in, he was scared to see his grandfather lying on the ground. He quickly ran over and asked what was wrong. His grandfather, in a faint voice, uttered, “Blue bottle... find the blue bottle...” Peter immediately dropped to his knees and started frantically searching the floor. At that moment, he was filled with regret for not tidying up the mess he made when he knocked over the first-aid kit. Finally, after a desperate search, Peter spotted the small blue bottle hidden under the sofa. He rushed over, reached out to grab the bottle and handed it to his grandfather, tears welling up his eyes and his voice trembling as he apologized, “Grandpa, I’m sorry!” His grandfather, after taking the medicine, gently patted Peter on the shoulder and said, “Thank God you’ve come home in time and find the life-saving medicine for me.” Realizing Grandpa was out of danger, Peter felt a mixed surge of guilt and comfort overwhelming him, and at this moment, he realized the importance of being punctual and staying organized. 词汇激活 行为类 ①跑过去:ran over/rush over/ dash over/hurry over ②伸出手:reached out/ extend /stretch ③颤抖:tremble/shake/ quaver 情绪类 ①害怕的:scared/frightened ②懊悔:regret/guilt/ remorse 【点睛】[高分句型1] Although Peter really wanted to finish watching the cartoon, he tore himself away from the cartoon and went home.(运用了although引导的让步状语从句) [高分句型2] He rushed over, reached out to grab the bottle and handed it to his grandfather, tears welling up his eyes and his voice trembling as he apologized, “Grandpa, I’m sorry!”(运用了独立主格结构作状语) [高分句型3] Realizing Grandpa was out of danger, Peter felt a mixed surge of guilt and comfort overwhelming him, and at this moment, he realized the importance of being punctual and staying organized.(运用了现在分词短语作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
