Here are four famous books. Let’s see which one you are most interested in.

On May 7, 2022, Merle Liivand broke her own world record for swimming with a single fin. She swam the distance of a full marathon in the rough waters of Biscayne Bay, Florida. She even picked trash out of the water as she swam.
As a child, she had health problems and began swimming to help her lungs get stronger. She was soon taking part in open water swimming contests. In one training session, she nearly swallowed some plastic that was floating in the sea. It made her think of all the sea animals who faced similar pollution every day. She decided to work to make people more aware of plastic pollution.
Liivand first set the world record for swimming with monofin (单片脚蹼) in 2019, when she swam 6.2 miles. In 2020, she broke the record again by swimming 12.8 miles. In 2021, she set a new Guinness World Record by swimming 18.6 miles. Last year, Liivand broke the record once more by swimming the length of a full marathon. It took her 11 hours and 54 seconds to swim 26.2 miles.
The water was rough, and she ran up against a few problems, but she didn’t stop. “I got stung by jellyfish,” she said. “And I kept telling myself that it was not the time to cry.”
To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a kayak (皮划艇) and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Liivand picked up all the trash she found and put it in the kayak. By the end of her marathon, the kayak held three bags of trash. She said, “This isn’t just about a record. It’s about helping the community and the world. Set a dream and try your best to make it come true. I will persist (坚持) it forever.”
4. What made Liivand develop the idea of picking up trash while swimming?
A. One of her swimming experiences.
B. The death of sea animals.
C. Her illness caused by pollution.
D. The encouragement from a friend.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Liivand’s brief life experiences.
B. Liivand’s innovation on swimming.
C. Liivand’s action against plastic pollution.
D. Liivand’s achievements in swimming.
6. What does the underlined phrase “ran up against” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Broke through. B. Prepared for.
C. Came across. D. Took away.
7. What does Liivand’s story inspire people to do?
A. Cherish what you have. B. Stick to your dreams.
C. Face disabilities bravely. D. Help people in need.
C
With a host of research showing that late night eating is linked to great er body weight, it’s no wonder avoiding late night eating has long been suggested to people who plan to lose weight. But until now, few studies have actually investigated (调查) why. This is what a recent US study set out to uncover.
Researchers had 16 participants follow two different meal schedules, each for a period of six days in total. The first group had their meals early in the day with the last meal consumed six hours and 40 minutes before bedtime. The second group had their daily meals four hours later. This meant they skipped breakfast and instead had lunch, dinner and an evening meal. Their last meal was consumed only two and a half hours before sleep. All the participants consumed the same diet, and all of their meals were equally space d with around four hours between them.
The researchers looked at three measures associated with weight gain: the influence of appetite, the impact of eating time on calories burned, and changes of fat tissue (组织). They found that compared to an early eating pattern, late eating not only increased feelings of hunger the following day, it also increased the rate of “hunger” hormones (激素) in the blood. Late eating also caused a decrease in calories burned the following day. Fat tissue samples taken from the participants also showed the increased fat storage. These results suggest that late eating could lead to weight gain.
Given that the study was only conducted on a limited number of participants and over a very short time, more research will be needed to further understand whether these changes are only temporary, and what effects long-term late night eating can have on the weight gain mechanisms (机制).
Anyway, this study adds to a growing body of evidence showing just how important meal timing can be when it comes to body weight. Therefore, people who are watching their weight may want to stay away from the late night snacks and favour eating most of their meals earlier.
8. What is the study designed to do?
A. To provide suggestions on losing weight.
B. To prove the findings of the past research.
C. To explore why a late night meal causes weight gain.
D. To figure out a better meal schedule.
9. What do the two groups have in common?
A. They had breakfast four hours later than normal.
B. They had daily meals roughly every four hours.
C. They had some light snacks between meals.
D. Their late night meal lasted for about 150 minutes.
10. Which of the following is a result of late eating?
A. The slow intake of nutrition. B. The end in feeling hungry.
C. The increase in blood pressure. D. The greater accumulation(累积) of fat.
11. What is the limitation of the study?
A. A small number of participants and trial days. B. The different eating times in the two groups.
C. Lack of more measures related to weight gain. D. Limited tissue samples taken from volunteers.
D
With fundamental developments in the field of technology, some experts foresee serious risks to jobs and employability in the coming years due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Approximately 27% of jobs are at high risk of automation during the artificial intelligence era.
Low and middle-skilled jobs are most at risk, including construction, farming, fishing, forestry and, to a lesser extent, production and transportation. High-skilled occupations, despite being more exposed to recent progress in AI, face the least risk of automation.
While the adoption of AI is still relatively low, rapid progress, falling technology costs and the increasing availability of workers with AI skills suggest that the world may be on the edge of an AI revolution (革命) . So far there is little evidence of a negative employment impact on firms that adopt AI. Workers and employers say that AI can reduce boring and dangerous tasks, leading to greater employee engagement and physical safety.
Nevertheless, a recent survey showed that three in five workers are worried about losing their job to AI within the next decade. Additionally, a similar number of workers worry that wages would decrease due to AI. More than half of workers are concerned about privacy and three in four say that AI has increased work pace.
In my opinion, for the better protection of the labour market and workers in the coming years, governments should encourage employers to provide more training, integrate AI skills into education and support diversity in the AI workforce. There is an urgent need for policy action to address AI risks in the workplace and to ensure accountability for and openness to employment-related decisions supported by AI. The recent speedup of generative AI-related developments and tools marks a technological watershed (转折点) with material implications in many workplaces. Longer-term policy frameworks for the use of AI in the workplace should be considered and closer international cooperation should be seen to maximize the benefits while appropriately managing the risks.
12. Who may be most affected by automation?
A. A tour guide. B. A building worker. C. A coffee producer. D. A farming professional.
13. What is the author’s attitude towards the adoption of AI in the workplace?
A. Deeply concerned. B. Strongly opposed.
C. Carefully optimistic. D. Relatively conservative.
14. What do the figures in paragraph 4 imply?
A. Harmed personal privacy. B. Decreased job satisfaction.
C. AI-related positions’ popularity. D. Workers’ broad concern over AI.
15. What is the author’s advice in the last paragraph?
A. Adopting policies to regulate AI’s impact. B. Limiting AI’s application in the workplace.
C. Promoting cooperation between AI firms. D. Investing more in AI education in colleges.

Ahmad was weak. He was all skin and bones. Worse still, he had a severe skin problem on his face. Added to his problems was the fact that he stuttered (口吃) when he was shy or nervous.
There was one advantage Ahmad had, however. He had a beautiful voice. But none of his friends knew about it as he practiced singing only in the bathroom. Once, he was caught unaware singing in the corridor by his classmates. The moment he saw them, he denied (否认) that the beautiful song they had heard was sung by him. They were convinced when his voice went to a characteristic stutter. “I…I…real-lly did-didn’t s-sing…”
One day, the class of Secondary 4B, which Ahmad was in, heard about a singing competition that was to be held in the nearby community centre. A prize would be awarded to the best student singer. It was a well-known yearly competition. Ahmad entered for it. So it was really a surprise for other students to see Ahmad’s name besides Ali’s on the notice board.
“You can sing, Ahmad? Get real! Don’t make me laugh!” Hearing the remarks, Ahmad felt awkward and sad. It was enough that they did not support him but laughing at him was too much. When the results were announced, Class 4B could not believe their ears. Ali, skilled in singing, had of course qualified but so did Ahmad for the finals. How on earth did the stutterer do it? They wondered.
The finals of the singing competition finally arrived. Ali’s supporters were out in full force. Mr. Mok, the principal, and some teachers caused quite a stir among the students when they turned up to support the two finalists from their school. Ali sang to the crowd’s delight. It looked like he was the clear favorite. His loud and clear voice, together with his good acting skill, made him popular among the audience.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Ahmad was next and there was a sudden silence before he began.

When Ahmad finished singing, there were very few dry eyes.

Liivand first set the world record for swimming with monofin (单片脚蹼) in 2019 when she swam 6.2 miles.

C 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第一段“With a host of research showing that late night eating is linked to great er body weight, it’s no wonder avoiding late night eating has long been suggested to people who plan to lose weight. But until now, few studies have actually investigated (调查) why. This is what a recent US study set out to uncover.(大量研究表明,深夜进食与体重增加有关,难怪长期以来一直建议计划减肥的人避免深夜进食。但直到现在,很少有研究真正调查了其中的原因。这是美国最近的一项研究所揭示的)”可知,研究的目的是了解为什么深夜用餐会导致体重增加。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“All the participants consumed the same diet, and all of their meals were equally space d with around four hours between them.(所有的参与者都吃同样的食物,他们每顿饭的间隔都是一样的,每次间隔大约4小时)”可知,这两个群体的共同之处在于他们每天大约每四小时吃一顿饭。
根据第三段“Fat tissue samples taken from the participants also showed the increased fat storage. These results suggest that late eating could lead to weight gain.(从参与者身上采集的脂肪组织样本也显示出脂肪储存的增加。这些结果表明,吃得晚可能会导致体重增加)”可知,晚上吃饭的结果是更多的脂肪堆积。故选D。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Given that the study was only conducted on a limited number of participants and over a very short time, more research will be needed to further understand whether these changes are only temporary, and what effects long-term late night eating can have on the weight gain mechanisms (机制).(考虑到这项研究只在有限的参与者中进行,而且时间很短,需要更多的研究来进一步了解这些变化是否只是暂时的,以及长期深夜进食对体重增加的机制有什么影响)”可知,本研究的局限性是参与者和试验天数太少。故选A。

B 13. C 14. D 15. A

上文“It’s nearly impossible to meet everyone’s expectations. Whatever you do, and no matter how hard you try, there will always be some individuals who dislike you. There are often times you can overlook them and go on with your routine. Nevertheless, sometimes someone’s unfavorable attitude towards you could have an influence on your grades and your ability to interact with others.(让每个人都满意是几乎不可能。
下文“That means instead of saying “Why don’t you like me?” say something like “I sense that there is a bit of tension between us. Is there anything I have done or anything I can do to help? ”(这意味着不要说“你为什么不喜欢我?”,你可以这样说:“我觉得我们之间有些紧张。我做了什么或者我能帮上什么忙吗?”)”强调以“自我感受”为中心的表达方法。空处引出下文中的这种表达方法。所以B选项“试着用“I - phrases”来表达你的想法,这能关注到你的感受。”符合语境,且“I-phrases”对应下文“I sense that there is a bit of tension between us. Is there anything I have done or anything I can do to help?”
下文“If you’ve done something to hurt or offend someone and that is the reason for which the person dislikes you, the best course of action is to try to make it right. Clearly say the words, “I’m sorry.” Be sure not to say “I’m sorry you were offended.” or “I’m sorry you felt that way.”or anything else that places the blame on (归咎于) the other person for misunderstanding your intentions.(如果你做了一些伤害或冒犯别人的事情,而这正是那个人不喜欢你的原因,那么最好的做法就是努力纠正它。清楚地说:“对不起。”一定不要说“很抱歉冒犯了你”。或者“我很抱歉你那样想。”或者其他任何将责任归咎于他人误解你的意图的话语)”说明本段主要介绍了道歉和纠正错误。空处为段落小标题,需概括全段内容。所以C项“道歉并纠正错误。”点明段落核心,与后文“say the words, “I’m sorry.” ”以及“make it right”形成原词复现。故选C。
上文“Be sure not to say “I’m sorry you were offended.” or “I’m sorry you felt that way.” or anything else that places the blame on the other person for misunderstanding your intentions.(一定不要说“很抱歉冒犯了你”。或者“我很抱歉你那样想。”或者其他任何将责任归咎于他人误解你的意图的话语)”指出道歉时不要把责任归咎于对方,由此推知空处应指出正确的道歉方式,F选项“相反,要谦虚,承认你伤害了别人的事实。”符合语境。故选F。
【20题详解】
下文“Importantly, you have to choose not to allow the person who dislikes you to influence you or get you down. It is OK to be disliked. Remember that even the most popular and well-loved celebrities are disliked by some people!(重要的是,你必须选择不让不喜欢你的人影响你或让你失望。被人讨厌也没关系。请记住,即使是最受欢迎和最受欢迎的名人也会被一些人不喜欢!)”强调不要被别人的不喜欢所影响。空处和后文为顺接关系,说明不要太在意别人的看法。所以D选项“最终,别人对你的看法并不重要。”符合语境,且“others think about you.”对应后文“the person who dislikes you”。故选D。

Dear Editor,
I’m Li Hua. I am writing to express my opinion about whether high school students should have a two-day weekend.
I firmly hold the view that the high school students should have it. Firstly, a two-day weekend provides us with more time to rest and relax. After a week of concentrated study, we need enough time to balance study and leisure, which is important for our physical and mental well-being. Secondly, having two days off allows us to seek our hobbies and interests. We can use this time to read, play sports, or engage in other activities that we enjoy. This not only enriches our life but also broadens our horizons. Lastly, a two-day weekend gives us the opportunity to spend more time with our families.
In conclusion, I strongly support the idea of a two-day weekend for us. It is beneficial for our rest, personal development and family relationships.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Editor,
I’m Li Hua. I am writing to express my opinion about whether high school students should have a two-day weekend.
I firmly hold the view that the high school students shouldn’t have it. Firstly, the change from middle school to high school is significant. The increased academic demands require more time for study and adaptation. A two-day weekend might lead to delay and less time for effective learning. Secondly, high school is a period for building a solid foundation for future education. Extra study time on weekends can help students grasp subjects better. Lastly, a regular schedule with one day off can keep a balance between study and rest.
In conclusion, I think a one-day weekend is more beneficial for high school students to ensure they are well-prepared for their academic journey.
Sincerely,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
Ahmad was next and there was a sudden silence before he began. The claps were few, coming from the principal, teachers and his only friend. Some low shouts of disapproval came from a few disbelieving schoolmates of his who felt that he was not qualified to be a finalist. Getting on the stage, he was determined to prove them wrong. His song was Climb Every Mountain. He adapted his tone and expression to the lyrics, and his delivery was extremely clear. He sang with such rich feelings and his movements were appropriate and well harmonious.
Paragraph 2:
When Ahmad finished singing, there were very few dry eyes. Then there was tense anticipation from the audience as the judges decided on the winner. In view of Ahmad’s outstanding performance, the audience wondered who would be the final winner. After a few anxious minutes of waiting, the results eventually came out. When Mr. Tan, the chief judge announced Ahmad was the winner, the audience present all cheered together and broke into thunderous applause. Getting widely recognized, Ahmad was excited with tears. He experienced the sweet fruits of victory.
