We put limitations on ourselves when the fear of failure grows stronger than our will to succeed. That’s why we all need a push to help us reach further than we ever thought possible.
That is the purpose of NubAbility Athletics Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed to get “limb (肢体) different” youth — kids who are amputees (被截肢者) — “out of the stands, off the bench, and into mainstream sports.” The organization holds camps around the country, pairing kids and coaches with similar limb differences to help them reach their full physical potential.
Tim, who was born without arms, certainly didn’t believe he could pull off a 20-inch box jump before he joined. This month, the 14-year-old participated in the weight-lifting and training program at a camp and achieved something amazing.
In a video on the Internet, we see Tim’s coach teaching him to jump onto a box. With no arm strength, it seems like a tough task. While Tim pushes through his self-doubt and jumps, he still holds back on his first two tries and doesn’t stick the landing.
Then, the coach pats her hands onto the box, yelling, “All the people who told you you can’t — right here, jump on them. Now!” This time, Tim puts all his energy into the jump. Still, it isn’t enough to make it all the way onto the box. Understandably, Tim grows frustrated and turns away as if to give up. But he’s not done yet. Tim turns back to the box with a look of pure determination, bends his knees. and launches himself onto the box!
As his coaches cheer him on, the victorious teen jumps down and straights into his motivator’s arms, overwhelmed with emotion at what he just achieved. That day, Tim learned he is capable of so much more than he knew.
4. What is the mission of NubAbility Athletics Foundation?
A. To find better treatments for amputees.
B. To develop the full potential of the disabled.
C. To help teenage amputees get involved in sports.
D. To provide financial support for “limb different” youth.
5. Why did Tim fail in his first two tries to jump onto the box?
A. He was afraid of getting hurt. B. His coach didn’t guide him well.
C. He didn’t have enough arm strength. D. He lacked confidence in his own ability.
6. Which word can best describe the coach’s words?
A. Encouraging. B. Funny. C. Comforting. D. Threatening.
7. What message can we get from Tim’s success?
A. Life has no limitations. B. It is never too late to learn.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. It is no use crying over spilled milk.

A physical examination usually begins with a series of questions. For instance, what foods do you eat? Do you smoke? Getting any exercise? A new research suggests another telling indicator could be added to that list: What was your college major? The research shows that the field one chooses to study in college can, statistically speaking, significantly predict one’s health in middle age.
The researchers find four majors associated with the best midlife health are architecture/engineering, biology/life sciences, business, and — here’s a surprise — communications/journalism. Perhaps chasing after big stories keeps us journalists in shape.
It has long been established that people with more education tend to be healthier. But does one’s major matter? To find out, the researchers analyzed data from the nationally representative American Community Survey.
Their sample consisted of 3.7 million United States-born adults between the ages of 45 and 64 — the time of life when physical functioning problems start to appear. Participants noted whether they had difficulty walking or climbing stairs, dressing or bathing. A “yes” answer in any of those categories resulted in a grade of relatively poor health.
The researchers focused on the 667,362 participants who earned a bachelor’s degree, but went no further in their education. They noted each person’s college major, which they placed into one of 15 categories. They found substantial differences in health across majors. Two majors are particularly disadvantaged in midlife. The chances of poor health are 1.9 times greater among psychology and law/public policy majors compared to business majors. The researchers argue this is likely due to several factors. Psychology majors tend to suffer from high unemployment and low earnings. Law/public policy majors often enter the field of law enforcement (执行).
The researchers say that they have discovered associations, not proof of causality. But they make a convincing case that some majors lead people to live healthier lifestyles than others. Their findings might even inspire a warning country song: Mammas, don’t let your babies grow up to be psychology majors.
8. What can be learned from the first paragraph?
A. Smoking can lead to poor health.
B. Diet is more important than exercise.
C. College major could be added to a checkup list.
D. Regular physical checkups help maintain your well-being.
9. What is the main method used by the researchers to assess participants’ health?
A. Blood tests. B. Physical fitness tests.
C. Mental health evaluations. D. Questions about daily activities.
10. Which major is most likely bad for midlife health according to the researchers?
A. Engineering. B. Psychology.
C. Business. D. Journalism.
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Your college major predicts midlife health.
B. Your major can influence your career interests.
C. The annual physical checkup is necessary to life.
D. People with more education tend to be healthier.

Crime fiction books have been popular with readers for many decades. Commercial success, of course, does not impress everyone and there are those who believe crime fiction should not be held in such high regard. Well-known in this group is Sebastian Franklin, who has argued that most crime fiction books look more like crossword puzzles than literature. However, increasingly this is a minority opinion as crime fiction has become recognized around the world as a rich and dynamic literary genre (体裁) in its own right.
Crime writing really came to the public’s notice in the 1920s and 1930s with the books of the British author Agatha Christie. Christie was a productive writer, publishing more than 60 detective novels over a 50-year period, beginning in 1920.
Without a doubt, there are certain elements that tend to be repeated in Christie’s books. The stories generally focus on a well-off circle of people, whose peaceful lives are thrown into chaos by an unexplained crime. The location is often a restricted space of some sort: a train, an island, a boat, or a village. This is quite different, for example, to the world of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, who often has the entire city of London as his hunting ground.
The books are also action-packed, no less so than today’s most popular thrillers. Christie mastered the art of the page-turner: events unfold so quickly and unpredictably that we keep reading to find out what happens next. The most significant consequence is that it is so simple to overlook vital clues. It is worth reading a Christie book a second time just to notice how carefully she hides crucial information about the criminal’s identity.
A survey of contemporary crime writing shows that Agatha Christie’s legacy is more important now than at anytime previously, at the very point when crime writing has become the most popular of all book genres.
12. What does Sebastian Franklin think of crime fiction books?
A. They are overvalued. B. They are a rich literary genre.
C. Their readers are a minority group. D. Their commercial success is impressive.
13. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. Contrast Christie’s different techniques.
B. Reveal a weakness of Christie’s writing style.
C. List some features of a typical Christie story.
D. Identify a famous writer important to Christie.
14. Which words will the author use to describe Christie’s books?
A. Quickly-written but popular. B. Interesting and unforeseeable.
C. Popular and loosely-organized. D. Unforeseeable but comprehensible.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Agatha Christie Enjoys Wealth and Fame.
B. Crime Writers Sharpen Their Writing Skills.
C. The Surprising Rise of Crime Fiction Books.
D. The Influence of Crime Writer Agatha Christie.

One afternoon, on our way home from school, Emma and I were chatting about the events of our day. Emma, with her curious eyes shining, asked me about my friendship with Lucy. Without a moment’s hesitation, I said, “I only hung out with Lucy because she wanted me to, but I didn’t really want to be friends with her. She was kind of boring.”
Unluckily, I didn’t know Lucy was nearby. When I looked up, she was right there, having heard everything. Her face turned pale, and her eyes got big with surprise. She didn’t say anything and ran off. Emma and I just stood there, feeling bad. I knew I should go after Lucy and say sorry, but I was too shocked to move. Emma’s face turned red too. We walked home without talking, and it felt like our steps were getting heavier.
The next days were hard. I felt really bad about what I said and wanted to fix things with Lucy. I needed to say sorry. But what should I say? Even though I didn’t mean to, I hurt Lucy’s feelings. Every time I saw her at school, I looked away quickly.
Then, something interesting happened in our speaking class. On Tuesday, Ms. Julia said we would do pre-class speeches. She had written our topics on small pieces of paper and put them in a box. We had to pick one without knowing what it was. I was a bit nervous. When I reached into the box, I pulled out a paper that said, “Tell your most embarrassing moment.” My heart was beating fast. It felt like I was given a chance to make things right.
I spent the next few days practicing my speech, trying to find the right words to apologize to Lucy. I wanted to be sincere and show her I was sorry. When the day of the speech came, I was still nervous, but I knew it was important to face my mistake.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
I stood in front of the class, took a deep breath, and began to share my story.

C 5. D 6. A 7. A

C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第一段中“A physical examination usually begins with a series of questions. For instance, what foods do you eat? Do you smoke? Getting any exercise? A new research suggests another telling indicator could be added to that list: What was your college major?(体检通常以一系列问题开始。例如,你吃什么食物?你抽烟吗?有运动吗?一项新的研究表明,另一个能说明问题的指标可以添加到这个清单中:你大学的专业是什么?)”可知,大学专业可以添加到健康检查清单中。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Participants noted whether they had difficulty walking or climbing stairs, dressing or bathing. A “yes” answer in any of those categories resulted in a grade of relatively poor health.(参与者要说明自己在走路、爬楼梯、穿衣或洗澡方面是否有困难。在任何一项中回答“是”,都会被评定为相对健康状况不佳)”可知,研究人员评估参与者健康的主要方法是询问他们关于日常生活活动的问题。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Two majors are particularly disadvantaged in midlife. The chances of poor health are 1.9 times greater among psychology and law/public policy majors compared to business majors.(有两个专业在中年时期处于特别不利的地位。心理学和法律/公共政策专业的人健康状况不佳的几率是商科专业的1.9倍)”以及“Psychology majors tend to suffer from high unemployment and low earnings.(心理学专业的人往往面临高失业率和低工资的问题)”可推知,心理学专业最有可能对中年健康不利。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“The research shows that the field one chooses to study in college can, statistically speaking, significantly predict one’s health in middle age.(研究表明,从统计学角度来说,一个人在大学选择的专业可以显著预测其中年时期的健康状况)”可知,本文主要论述了大学专业与中年健康的关系。所以“A. Your college major predicts midlife health.(你的大学专业预示着中年健康状况)”最能概括文章内容,适合做标题。故选A项。

A 13. C 14. B 15. D

根据第一段“Well - known in this group is Sebastian Franklin, who has argued that most crime fiction books look more like crossword puzzles than literature.(在这个群体中,塞巴斯蒂安・富兰克林很出名,他认为大多数犯罪小说看起来更像填字游戏而不是文学作品)” 可知,Sebastian Franklin 认为犯罪小说被高估了,并不具备很高的文学价值。故选A。
根据第三段“Without a doubt, there are certain elements that tend to be repeated in Christie’s books. The stories generally focus on a well - off circle of people, whose peaceful lives are thrown into chaos by an unexplained crime. The location is often a restricted space of some sort: a train, an island, a boat, or a village.(毫无疑问,有些元素在克里斯蒂的作品中往往会重复出现。故事通常聚焦于一群富裕的人,他们平静的生活因一起不明原因的犯罪而陷入混乱。故事发生的地点通常是某种有限的空间:一列火车、一座岛屿、一艘船或一个村庄)”可知,作者通过描述故事聚焦的人群和发生地点等内容,列举了典型的克里斯蒂故事的一些特征。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Christie mastered the art of the page-turner: events unfold so quickly and unpredictably that we keep reading to find out what happens next. The most significant consequence is that it is so simple to overlook vital clues. It is worth reading a Christie book a second time just to notice how carefully she hides crucial information about the criminal’s identity.(克里斯蒂掌握了引人入胜的艺术:事件展开得如此迅速和不可预测,以至于我们不断阅读,以了解接下来会发生什么。
It’s nearly impossible to satisfy everyone. Whatever you do, and no matter how hard you try, there will always be some individuals who dislike you. You can frequently choose to ignore such things and continue living normally. Sometimes, however, a person’s negative feelings for you might influence your grades as well as your skill in meeting new people and getting along with them. ___16___
Have an open conversation. This might be awkward, but sometimes the only way to know what is going on or why someone has a problem with you is to speak out straightforwardly. ___17___ That means instead of saying “Why don’t you like me?”, say something like “I feel like there is some tension between us. Is there anything I have done or anything I can do to help?”
___18___ If you’ve done something to hurt or offend someone and that is the reason why the person dislikes you, the best course of action is to try to make it right. Clearly say the words, “I’m sorry.” Be sure not to say “I’m sorry you were offended.” or “I’m sorry you felt that way.” or anything else that places the blame on the other person for misinterpreting your intentions. ___19___
Learn to let it go. ___20___ Importantly, you have to choose not to allow the person who dislikes you to influence you or get you down. It is OK to be disliked. Remember that even the most popular and well-loved celebrities are disliked by some people!
A. Build self-confidence.
B. Apologize and make it right.
C. In such cases, it’s essential to take some measures to handle it.
D. Instead, be modest and admit the fact that you’ve hurt someone.
E. Ultimately, not everyone’s opinion should define your self-worth.
F. A sincere apology requires taking full responsibility for your actions.
G. Try to express your ideas with “I-phrases”, which focus on your feelings.
C 17. G 18. B 19. D 20. E

根据上文“Sometimes, however, a person’s negative feelings for you might influence your grades as well as your skill in meeting new people and getting along with them.(然而,有时一个人对你的负面情绪可能会影响你的成绩,以及你结识新朋友和与他们相处的能力)” 可知,文章开篇表明很难让所有人满意,有时他人的负面看法会影响自己,所以此处应说明在这种情况下,有必要采取措施应对。
根据下文“That means instead of saying “Why don’t you like me?”, say something like “I feel like there is some tension between us. Is there anything I have done or anything I can do to help?”(这意味着不要说“你为什么不喜欢我?”,而是说“我感觉我们之间有些紧张。我做了什么或者我能做些什么来帮忙吗?”)” 可知,该段讲进行开诚布公的交谈,所以此处应是说要用 “I - phrases” 来表达想法,关注自己的感受。故G选项“试着用“I-phrases”来表达你的想法,它关注你的感受”符合语境。故选G。
【18题详解】
根据下文“If you’ve done something to hurt or offend someone and that is the reason why the person dislikes you, the best course of action is to try to make it right. Clearly say the words, “I’m sorry.”(如果你做了一些伤害或冒犯某人的事情,而这就是这个人不喜欢你的原因,最好的做法是努力改正。清楚地说出“对不起”这句话。)” 可推知,此空为段落小标题,该段讲如果因自己的行为伤害或冒犯他人导致对方不喜欢自己,最好的做法是改正,要真诚道歉,所以小标题应为道歉并改正。故B选项“道歉并改正”符合语境。故选B。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Be sure not to say “I’m sorry you were offended.” or “I’m sorry you felt that way.” or anything else that places the blame on the other person for misinterpreting your intentions(一定不要说“很抱歉你被冒犯了”或者“很抱歉你有那样的感觉”或者任何其他将责任归咎于对方误解你意图的话)” 可知,上文说不要把责任推给对方,所以下文应该说明怎么做合理。
根据下文“Importantly, you have to choose not to allow the person who dislikes you to influence you or get you down.(重要的是,你必须选择不让不喜欢你的人影响你或让你沮丧)” 可知,下文说不要让不喜欢你的人影响你,所以此处应是说不是每个人的意见都应该定义你的自我价值,选项承接下文且话题一致。

“be remarkable for”是固定搭配,意为“因……而引人注目,因……而卓越”。故填for。
故填to attract。
“on one’s way”是固定表达,意为“在某人去……的路上”,用形容词性物主代词their作定语。故填their。
“ they are talking about”是宾语从句,从句中缺少宾语,表示“谈论的事情”,用连接代词what引导从句。故填what。
故填a。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
I stood in front of the class, took a deep breath, and began to share my story.

That day marked a turning point.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I stood in front of the class, took a deep breath, and began to share my story. At first, my palms were sweaty and my voice trembled. “My most embarrassing and regretful moment was when I betrayed my friend Lucy’s trust. In a moment of thoughtlessness, I said cruel words about her. I was wrong, and I’ve been haunted by my actions ever since. Lucy, you are an amazing friend, full of warmth and kindness. I am truly sorry for the pain I caused you.” As I spoke, I secretly looked at Lucy a few times. Her eyes were shiny and she was biting her lip.
That day marked a turning point. After my speech, Lucy walked up to me with a soft smile. “Your apology means a lot,” she said. “I know you didn’t mean those words.” From that day on, we became inseparable. We laughed together, cried together, and built a friendship that was stronger than ever. This experience made me realize that real friends are forgiving, and every relationship is worth fighting for.
