“Tonight?” I was not ready for this.
“Tonight,” Ned Land repeated. “We are only a few miles off the Spanish coast. If we wait, they’ll find us! And the wind is blowing in the right direction. You agreed, Dr. Aronnax, to escape (逃跑) with me. Remember your promise!” I said nothing. “At nine o’clock,” he continued, I’ll go to the stair with Conceil. You will wait in the library for our signal. I have already put some food in the boat. Everything is done!”
“The sea is quite rough (汹涌的),” I said.
“Yes, but if we don’t go tonight, we will soon be too far from land!” I knew that he was right. I was also frightened. What would Captain Nemo do if he discovered our plan, or if we failed and got caught? We had talked about this for days. Now, I did not want to see him. I stayed in my room as the hours slowly passed.
At seven o’clock, I had dinner in my room. Only two hours to go! I kept thinking what would happen if we failed or got caught so I had a headache. I walked up and down in my room. As I looked around, I saw that Captain Nemo’s bedroom door was open. The room was empty.
It was eight o’clock, and I went to the dark library. As I waited, I felt a bump as the submarine (潜水艇) came to rest on the ocean floor.
The library door opened, and Captain Nemo entered. He told me that we were in Vigo Bay. A Spanish admiral (海军上将) had burned his own ships there in 1702 to prevent the British Navy from taking the huge amount of gold they were carrying. He took me to the window. The crew (船员) were gathering the gold from the sand and bringing it to the submarine. Now, I knew how Captain Nemo had become so rich.
(adapted from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea)

After pouring hot water over fine powdered (粉状的) tea to form a paste (糊), Han Zheming carefully mixes it with a bamboo stick until the froth (泡沫) appears on the top. Then, Han repeatedly adds more hot water in order to create the pictures he wants. This action of pouring the tea is called dian, also known as dian cha, which is a tea art from the Song Dynasty. In 2019, it was listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
Han has been interested in dian cha since childhood. “My mother loves traditional culture and I have been influenced,” said Han. After he graduated from the China Academy of Art in Zhejiang province in 2006, Han believed it was his responsibility to spread the art form.
Han believed creating pictures on the tea foam is careful but quick work. Usually, the whole process has to be completed within 10 minutes. The best tea temperature is around 40℃. “Usually, it takes a year of practice for one to be able to do it,” Han added. “Traditional paintings are about the soft brush against the hard paper, but the tea art is about the hard teaspoon and the soft froth.” Han said. He wanted to bring the old tea art back to modern life and have more people understand its beauty.
To spread dian cha culture, Han put the process of tea whisking (搅拌) and drawing on social media platforms, including Xiaohongshu, Bilibili and Douyin, attracting more than 20,000 followers. Some of his videos have received more than 300, 000 likes. So far, more than 100 people have visited him to learn the skill.
When talking about tea art, Han said we should increase the beauty rather than change the nature of tea. “I want more people to understand the processes and reasons of tea making,” he explained.
25. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a story. B. By explaining some facts.
C. By describing a scene. D. By asking a question.
26. According to the passage, which step means “dian”?
A. Draw pictures on the froth. B. Mix the tea with a bamboo stick.
C. Pour hot water. D. Form a paste.
27. How do the public feel about Han Zheming’s efforts in spreading dian cha?
A. Positive. B. Critical. (批判性的)
C. Neutral. (中立的) D. Doubtful.
28. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Process of Dian Cha. B. Han Zheming’s Life Stories.
C. Han Spreads Dian Cha on the Internet. D. Han Brings Dian Cha to Modern Life.

①Some people can manage any journey with no guide but their “pigeon (鸽子) sense”. How do they do it? And can this ability be learned? In fact, the latest science research suggests that there are plenty of ways for common people to improve their sense of direction.
②People’s sense of direction is influenced by many different factors. Childhood environment shapes people’s comfort and confidence in finding ways. Allowing kids to have the chance to move independently around different places is very important. “Experiments suggest that passive (被动的) movement is not that good because you don’t usually pay attention,” says Nora, a psychological scientist. People who grew up outside cities, or in very large cities, also appear to have better senses of direction when they become adults. “We have found that even as adults, people who move around their environment more widely have better senses of direction,” says Nora.
③In many ancient societies, girls and women had fewer chances to go out to find directions while men went hunting in the rainforest. So women are more likely to consider that they are born with a worse sense of direction although studies show that gender (性别) differences don’t influence their performance in finding ways.
④ ▲ “One is that you think you cannot improve the sense of direction,” Nora says. While adults’ brains are different from children’s in some ways, adults can still learn to do that. Nora is also worried because people think that the sense of direction is of no use in time of GPS. “But what if phone batteries die or systems make mistakes, like driving into water on the advice of their GPS?” Nora pointed out.
⑤In fact, people can train their sense of direction by better noticing environmental cues. “People can pay attention to things around them, like the wind, the sun or even a tree, whether they’re in the city or the countryside.” Nora says. “It is difficult to provide common ways to improve the senses of direction because of people’s cultural differences. But in general, the more you move, especially in ways that are kind of challenging, the better senses of direction you’ll develop,” Nora says.
⑥Besides, getting a proper amount of sleep may help too. One global study found that for people aged 54 and older, sleeping seven hours a night leads to the best performance in a way-finding game.
⑦So although not everyone is born with “pigeon sense” the good news is that they—and you—can continue to develop the skill over a lifetime.
29. Which of the following in the dictionary can best explain the underlined word “cues” in Paragraph 5?
cue n. cues v. cueing cued cued
①a signal (信号) that helps to solve a problem
②a few words or an action that gives you an idea about something
③a long wooden stick used for hitting the ball in some games
④to give sb. a signal so they know when to start doing sth.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D.
30. Which sentence can be put in ▲ ?
A. People have discovered some useful facts of senses of direction.
B. People have many misunderstandings about the sense of direction.
C. People haven’t worked out some mysteries of the sense of direction.
D. People have thought of some ways to develop the sense of direction.
31. What can we infer from the passage?
A Women have a worse sense of direction than men.
B. Adults can still improve their sense of direction.
C. Active movement can lead to a better sense of direction.
D. The sense of direction influences one’s sleep amount.
32. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (①-Paragraph 1②-Paragraph 2…)
A. B.
C. D.

V. 任务型阅读。
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,完成下列各题。
Zhang Hongwu, the 42-year-old restorer (修复者) of cultural relics (文物), is part of a team who are responsible for repairing the Terracotta Army.
Pointing to the life-size Terracotta Warriors, Zhang said, “These are pieces of history that have been carefully preserved (保存). More than 2000 years has passed by, but you can still see the amount of detail on the figures (塑像).”
Zhang said his team aims to bring back the relics’ original appearances by using the principle of minimum intervention (最小干预)—to preserve as much of them as they used to be. During the past 25 years, working in the Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum, Zhang has restored more than 150 of the figures. In 1993, Zhang graduated from Northwest University in Xi’an with a major (专业) in cultural heritage (遗产) and three years later he started the work on restoring Terracotta Warriors.
To become a successful professional restorer, the first step is to have a strict training program. In the first two years, Zhang was not allowed to touch the relics. And he was told to “observe, remember and read”. His first task after his training ended was to search for missing parts of the figures among the piled fragments (残片). Sometimes he was unable to find a single missing piece and often asked his teacher when he could start to repair a complete Terracotta Warrior.
What’s more challenging is that the technology which is used to restore the figures has changed over the years, but the whole process is still very complicated. The Terracotta Warriors are very fragile, and the restorers try to piece them together before applying special glue to stick them, which always takes quite a long time. Over the years, the restorers have become used to the fact that hardly anything can be done in a very short period of time.
“However, with more and more young people choosing to major in restoration in universities, we are happy to see ________.” Zhang said confidently.
33. Does Zhang Hongwu work as a restorer?

A new study has found that 176 kinds of birds around the world are building their nests (鸟巢) with rubbish from humans, such as cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags. Aren’t birds supposed to use things in nature, like grass, leaves and other parts of trees, to build their homes? Yes, they used to.
But now things are different. A group of European scientists looked into about 35,000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man - made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth.
Scientists found that some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have some chemicals (化学物质) , so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the birds warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more problems to birds. The unhealthy chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives. To make matters worse, if the cigarette fire is not off when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set the nest on fire. Seabirds were found to add fishing nets to their nests, which may also cause danger to themselves, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves.
Our friends in the air are living a hard life because of some human activities. To improve the situation, people shouldn’t be allowed to smoke or leave rubbish behind when there are many trees around. And to make the idea work, people must receive punishment for breaking the rules. We can also play our part by building artificial (人工的) nests that are warm and safe for birds to use instead of forcing them to build their own.
Recently I read an article about ____43____ . A study found 176 bird species worldwide now use human rubbish like cigarette butts and plastic bags ____44____ to build nests. These materials offer benefits, such as keeping insects away, offering protection for baby birds and ____45____ . However, they also pose risks. Cigarette chemicals harm baby birds or hurt them, and so do the fishing nets. To solve the problem, people should avoid ____46____, and build artificial nests for birds.

⑦So although not everyone is born with “pigeon sense”, the good news is that they—and you—can continue to develop the skill over a lifetime.
