I stepped from the lazy coolness of the house into the heat of a summer day.
“Wow, I better make this fast,” I said to myself. As the burning sun beat down, I laboriously dragged the pipe the length of the yard, watering as I went and thinking that a hat might have been in order. My daughter, Katherine, stuck out her head from the back door.
“What are you doing out here, Mom?’
I turned but nearly tripped over a stick. I used my shirt to wipe the sweat out of my eyes so I could see her.
“I have to water the flowers, or they will die.”
“Well, be careful. I’m off to class.”
I continued my missions and from time to time I picked up the tools. Finally, I finished. With a sigh of relief, I reached the back door, greatly expecting the
rush of cool air on my red face. Relief quickly turned to disbelief and shock; Katherine had flipped the deadbolt(栓上门栓) out of habit. The door was locked.
My mind quickly processed a slideshow of reality: padlock(门锁) is on gate; key to padlock is in house; cell phone is in house; I don’t know when my
husband comes home. I’m going to cook! My backyard was an oven(烤箱), and I was the picnic ham.
I told myself to calm down and think. There had to be a way. I paced back and forth from side to side of the yard shouting, “Heeeeeeelp meeeeee!” at the
top of my lungs. No response at all.
My three little dogs faithfully tried to help. They stayed right with me, dancing in and out of the dog door from time to time as if to say, “Get out of the heat, Mom. It’s easy.”
I took a close look at the very small and low dog door on the gate. Would I climb through? Ha - ha, not a chance. How about reaching my arm through the opening and up to flip the bolt lever? I had seen my daughter do that.
