Four Classics
Bleak House, by Charles Dickens
Published in 1853, Bleak House has a large number of characters and subplots, but at the heart of the story is the long lawful battle of Jarndyce vs Jarndyce concerning a will. Although the work is fictional, Dickens claimed that the law case that runs through the book was based on multiple historical cases. Scholars often point to the true story of the Thellusson vs Woodford case in which a will was read and contested. The book is widely regarded as a masterpiece of fiction and literature of law.
The Republic, by Plato
The best-known work of the best-known thinker in Western philosophical history. Written around 375 BCE, The Republic was first published in ancient Greece. Plato wrote the book as a Socratic dialogue in which Socrates talks with Athenians and foreigners alike about the meaning of justice and the rule of law.
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
The 1960 novel explores the racial tensions in the fictional Alabama town of Maycomb. The story is told through the eyes of a six-year-old girl called Scout. The novel shows the process of learning we all go through a society fills us with ideas of justice, equality, community, and the importance of law.
On Liberty, by John Stuart Mill
Published in 1859, On Liberty is one of the most celebrated defences of free speech ever written. Liberty is a crucial concept for any student of law to analyse. Like justice, it is hard to define. On Liberty is an important text for anyone looking to understand the foundations of modern thought with regard to the individual in a society governed by laws.

My wife and I have gardened together for years, but the great birch tree (桦树) challenge of 2024 put our teamwork to the test.
We’d agreed to replace two birch trees we’d lost and buy trees small enough for me to manage. Yet, at the garden center, my wife’s attention was drawn to a towering 15-foot birch with a root ball the size of a big exercise ball. When I asked an employee about its weight, he estimated, “About 400 pounds.” I tried to make sure my wife could hear so I raised my voice on purpose, “So, you’d need to be a sportsman to move that, right?” She nodded. Game over, I thought.
“Call Brian,” my wife said, referring to our strong firefighter son-in-law. The next morning, Brian arrived with 800 pounds of birch trees in his truck. After much pushing and struggling, we managed to get them off the truck, but they went no further than the driveway. Brian left for some reason, and the trees remained where they’d landed.
That night, it sprang to my mind that we’d been asking the wrong question. Instead of “How do we move a 400-pound tree?” we should be asking, “How can we make the tree lighter?” With that shift in mind, I got out of bed and removed the 300-pound pile of earth, dirt and rocks from each root ball, making them much easier to handle. Two months later, the two trees are tall and solid, already casting shadows. To me, they are more than just trees—they are reminders of the times I limit myself by sticking to the usual methods. I am grateful for having a partner who pushes me to look up and change the way I think about things.
24. How did the author probably feel at the sight of the 15-foot birch?
A. Excited. B. Concerned.
C. Relieved. D. Astonished.
25. Why did the author raise his voice on purpose?
A. To prevent his wife from buying the tree.
B. To warn his wife about the tree’s poor health.
C. To show his determination to be a sportsman.
D. To express his dissatisfaction at the employee.
26. What did the author do with the trees that night?
A. He threw them away.
B. He just left them in the driveway.
C. He reduced their weight before planting.
D. He asked Brian to take them home by truck.
27. What do the trees represent to the author?
A. The power of teamwork.
B. A devotion to hard work.
C. A physical challenge he overcame.
D. The value of thinking out of the box.

The first time Norma Geddes successfully cut and shaped a piece of glass, at the age of 69, she was really in high spirits. “I was one of five people in a class where we were learning how to make stained-glass (彩绘玻璃) panels and everyone was 30 years younger than me,” says the former nurse and healthcare manager. “I became so excited at seeing this moon-shaped piece of glass come to life in my hands.”
Geddes had become interested in glass artistry only a few weeks previously, while she was overseeing the decoration of her kitchen in Richmond, Virginia, in 2010. “I told my designer I wanted two cupboards with textured glass (肌理玻璃) and he suggested I go to the glass shop to pick them out,” she says. “Surprised, I noticed a small note in the shop advertising local stained-glass classes. It was so unusual I decided to sign up.”
“I was attracted by the act of making such a panel and decided to build a workshop of my own afterward,” Geddes recalls. While working full-time at a hospital in Richmond, Geddes turned her basement into a glass-cutting studio. She found herself spending whole weekends in the new workshop, producing dozens of wonderful pieces.
Now 82, Geddes spends up to eight hours a day, seven days a week working in her studio. She has included not only stained-glass panels but also fused-glass boxes and beaded accessories (串珠配饰) like bottle stoppers, as well as various recycled pieces. Her creations can take between two days and a week to finish, and sell for between $35 and $500 in the three galleries that display her work.
Cutting glass can be risky work and while Geddes has never suffered any major injuries, she says that she is “always covered with little cuts”. She isn’t discouraged though, and is preparing for her biggest show yet at a new exhibition center in Charlottesville.
28. What made Geddes stand out in class?
A. Her identity as a nurse. B. Her super skills.
C. Her social abilities. D. Her advanced age.
29. What happened to Geddes at the glass shop in 2010?
A. She discovered her future hobby.
B. She observed how to make textured glass.
C. She failed to find what she wanted.
D. She met a faulty product.
30. What do we know about 82-year-old Geddes?
A. She teaches glass artistry.
B. She has enlarged her range of products.
C. She has moved to Charlottesville.
D. She decides to build a workshop of her own.
31. Which words can best describe Geddes?
A. Patient and straightforward. B. Caring and talented.
C. Creative and inspiring. D. Tough and generous.

Clownfish living in the sea aren’t as good-humored as the 2003 movie Finding Nemo might suggest. These creatures are actually highly territorial. “They are ready to attack anytime,” recalls Justin Rhodes, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana who has been bitten by clownfish to the point of bleeding.
Previous studies have showed that ocellaris clownfish — the common clownfish, as seen in Finding Nemo — especially dislike an intruder (入侵者) of their own kind. If they don’t see any white upright lines — the common clownfish’s signature look — the fish is usually free to enter. But if they see any lines similar to their own, they will defend their home.
Still, a big question remained for scientists. Not only do twenty-eight total species of clownfish swim the seas — some with as many as three lines, others with none—but countless other patterned fish share the habitat. With all this diversity and color, how exactly do clownfish recognize members of their own species?
To learn this, a research team raised a school of common clownfish — which have three white upright lines — in isolation, ensuring they had never seen any fish beyond their own kind. When the fish were six months old, the team set up several different tanks (鱼缸) with cameras to film the activities inside. First, they placed 50 common clownfish in individual tanks and introduced more “newcomer” common clownfish. They also added fish from three other species: orange skunk clownfish, which are light orange and have a single white line running from head to tail; Clark’s anemonefish, which are black and yellow with two white upright lines; and saddleback clownfish, black and orange fish that typically have three white upright patches (斑块).
The researchers observed the common clownfish coming into the intensest conflict with the fish that have three white upright lines and being the gentlest with those that have a single white line. The fish with two white upright lines or three white upright patches were only slightly pressured. These results suggested that common clownfish recognized — and directed great anger toward — their own species.
32. What does the underlined word “good-humored” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Friendly. B. Beautiful.
C. Smart. D. Lively.
33. How do ocellaris clownfish identify an intruder?
A. By listening for its sounds.
B. By checking its marks.
C. By observing the way it swims.
D. By determining the smell it gives off.
34. What similarities do the fish share in the research?
A. They are black and yellow.
B They are raised by the team.
C. They belong to the same species.
D. They have patterns on their bodies.
35. What can be inferred about common clownfish?
A. They are rare and valuable.
B. They prefer to live in large groups.
C. They may understand basic maths.
D. They have a strong ability to recognize colors.

Moving into a new neighborhood was a challenge for our family, especially being faced with an empty garden plot crying out for attention. We dreamed of growing our own vegetables, but none of us had any gardening experience.
One sunny afternoon, while I was thinking about what to do, a sudden knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. I hurried to the door, curious about who might be visiting. Standing there was an elderly man in worn, dirty clothes. His face was weathered but kind, and his eyes held stories untold.
“Hello” he said softly. “I noticed your garden. I’ve been gardening for years and would love to help you plant some vegetables if you’d like.”
I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I should trust this stranger. But his earnest expression convinced me to invite him inside for a chat. As we talked, Mr. Thompson shared stories of his years spent tending gardens. He spoke with passion about the joy of planting seeds and watching them grow. I learned that he had once owned a garden of his own, but after losing his wife, he suffered from loneliness, which touched me, and I decided to accept his offer to help with my garden.
The next day, Mr. Thompson arrived, ready to work. My daughter, Ana, who was just seven, greeted him with much enthusiasm (热情). She invited him in for tea and shared the cookies she had baked. Their connection developed immediately, and I watched, touched, as Mr. Thompson’s face lit up at Ana’s innocent chatter.
As the weeks passed, Mr. Thompson came to our home daily. With his expert guidance, the empty plot transformed into a vegetable garden. In return for his help, I began baking delicious apple pies. Each afternoon, I would present him with a warm slice, and he would share his stories with my children, filling our home with laughter and warmth. My children grew attached to him, eagerly expecting his visits.

W: I think she’s on her lunch break. I can put it on her desk for you.
M: Oh, don’t worry about it. I can do it myself. Thank you, though. I’m just really nervous about the meeting this Thursday. I know they want to fire some people and I’m hoping this article will help me keep my job.
W: I don’t think you have anything to worry about. You’ve been working here for over five years. I know the company’s trying to save money right now, but you shouldn’t be too worried.
M: I hope you’re right. I don’t know if the boss even knows my name. He didn’t even say hi to me at the Christmas party.

M: You’re right. I’m just nervous. I really like this job, and I’m trying to save money to go back to college.
W: I believe in you, John. Now you just have to believe in yourself.

B
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. D

【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. C

B. They are raised by the team.
C. They belong to the same species.
D. They have patterns on their bodies.
35. What can be inferred about common clownfish?
A. They are rare and valuable.
B. They prefer to live in large groups.
C. They may understand basic maths.
D. They have a strong ability to recognize colors.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. C

【导语】这是一篇说明文。研究发现小丑鱼领地意识强,通过识别身上线条等图案辨别同类,对有相同线条的同类攻击性最强。
【32题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段第二句“These creatures are actually highly territorial. ‘They are ready to attack anytime,’(这些生物实际上具有高度的领地意识。‘它们随时准备攻击,’)”可知,小丑鱼充满攻击性,由此可推知,小丑鱼并不像电影中那样友好。所以猜测good-humored表“有好的”意思。故选A。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“If they don’t see any white upright lines—the common clownfish’s signature look—the fish is usually free to enter. But if they see any lines similar to their own, they will defend their home.(如果它们没有看到任何白色竖线 —— 普通小丑鱼的标志性外观 —— 其他鱼通常可以自由进入。但如果它们看到任何类似自己的线条,就会保卫家园。)”可知,小丑鱼通过检查入侵者的“标记(白色竖线)”来识别同类。故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段对实验对象的描述:“They also added fish from three other species: orange skunk clownfish, which are light orange and have a single white line running from head to tail; Clark’s anemonefish, which are black and yellow with two white upright lines; and saddleback clownfish, black and orange fish that typically have three white upright patches (斑块).(他们还补充了来自其他三个物种的鱼:银背小丑鱼(浅橙色,有一条从头部延伸至尾部的白色条纹)、双带小丑鱼(黑黄相间,带有两条白色竖纹),以及鞍背小丑鱼(黑橙相间,通常有三块白色竖斑)。)”,以及实验中引入的有三条白色竖线的“newcomer”普通小丑鱼可知,所有研究中的鱼类“身体上都有图案”。故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The researchers observed the common clownfish coming into the intensest conflict with the fish that have three white upright lines and being the gentlest with those that have a single white line. (研究人员观察到,常见的小丑鱼与有三条白色竖线的鱼发生了最激烈的冲突,而与只有一条白线的鱼则发生了最温和的冲突。)”可推断,小丑鱼能通过识别“线条数量”区分同类,显示出较强的图案识别能力(类似 “基础数学能力”)。故选C。

During last summer vacation, I challenged myself to learn skateboarding. Initially, it was extremely difficult and I constantly struggled with balance and took more than a few hard falls. However, I was determined to get the hang of it. Each morning, I practiced at the local park, concentrating on mastering the basics and staying steady. Gradually, my confidence grew, and after a few weeks, I could finally skateboard smoothly.
Skateboarding has taught me valuable lessons in patience and perseverance. Now, it’s more than just a hobby; it’s a reminder that with effort, I can get over any challenge.

“Hello,” he said softly.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 However, one day, he didn’t come to my house on time to take care of the garden. Concern crept in as I saw the garden. Ana kept asking, “Where’s Mr. Thompson?” After several hours, I decided we needed to check on him. When we arrived at his home, we found the door slightly open. I knocked and called out, but there was no response. My heart sank as I feared something might be wrong. Finally, we pushed the door open and found Mr. Thompson resting on the sofa, looking pale and weak.
Then we decided to take care of Mr. Thompson. We began visiting him regularly, bringing meals and looking after his well-being. Slowly, he regained his strength, and the bond between us deepened. Eventually, he returned to our home, eager to tend the garden again, and we continued to shower him with love and appreciation. Mr. Thompson was no longer a mere neighbor; he had become a valued member of our family. His presence brought joy to our lives, and we were grateful for the opportunity to have him in our lives.
