Smoking can make your brain get smaller? That’s right! Scientists in America made a study and found out that smoking might cause your brain to get smaller. But don’t worry. If you give up smoking, it can stop your brain from getting even smaller, though it won’t make it go back to its normal size. This study helps explain why people who smoke might have a hard time remembering things and could be more likely (可能的) to get a sickness called Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病).
Scientists have known for a while that there is a connection between smoking and having a smaller brain. And you know what? Both having a smaller brain and smoking can run in families! Almost half of the risk of smoking is because of your genes (基因).
To understand more about how genes, brains, and human behaviors are connected, the scientists looked at information from a big data (数据) bank in the United Kingdom. This data bank has information about half a million people, like their genes, health, and behaviors. Over 40, 000 people in this data bank had pictures taken of their brains to see how big they were. The scientists looked at data about brain size, smoking history, genetic risk, and other information for a total of 32,094 people.
The results showed that brain size, smoking history, and genetic risk are all connected. Besides, the more someone smokes every day, the smaller his brain might get. The scientists also found a pattern: genes make people more likely to smoke, and smoking causes their brains to become smaller.
The scientists said that having a smaller brain is like getting older. And getting older and smoking are both things that can make it more likely for someone to get a sickness called dementia (痴呆). But if you stop smoking, it could help your brain stay healthy and decrease the risk of getting dementia.
8. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The brain. B. The study. C. Stopping smoking. D. Stopping worrying.
9. Which of the following best shows the pattern mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. Genes → Smoking →Smaller Brains. B. Genes → Smaller Brains → Smoking.
C. Smoking→Genes→Smaller Brains. D. Smoking → Smaller Brains → Genes.
10. The writer wrote the passage mainly to __________.
A. discuss the advantages of giving up smoking
B. compare the brain sizes of smokers and non-smokers
C. warn readers about the influences of smoking on the brain
D. explain the connection between family history and smoking
11. What may the writer write about next in the passage?
A. Ways to give up smoking. B. Scientists from the data bank.
C. People with Alzheimer’s disease. D. Information about a normal brain.

Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th, 2025. But his great deeds and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep lighting up China’s way forward.
Huang Xuhua was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw the hard times of his country under foreign attacks. These sad memories made him study hard. He made a promise to make the country strong with his knowledge.
In the 1950s, when China started to develop nuclear submarines (核潜艇), it was a very difficult job. Huang Xuhua was not afraid and stood up bravely. At that time, there was not much advanced (先进的) technology or many resources. It was like climbing a very steep mountain. But he and his team took on this challenge. To keep the project secret, they stopped contacting the outside world, even their families. Huang Xuhua left his hometown for many years.
During the design process, they met a lot of problems. For example, designing a nuclear reactor was really hard. They couldn’t get help from foreign experts, so they could only depend on their own research. They used simple tools like abacuses (算盘) and slide rules to calculate (计算) and do experiments with great effort. Another important problem was to make sure the submarine was stable underwater. After many simulations and tests, they gradually overcame these problems.
Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. This made China one of the few countries that had this ability. Huang Xuhua didn’t stop after this big success. He went on to help with the development of submarine technology. His hard work and devotion (奉献) won him many honors, including the “Medal of the Republic” (共和国勋章) in 2019.
Now, when we think of him, we know that his life can inspire us a lot. We, especially the young people, should learn from his spirit. Let’s take on the responsibility, face challenges bravely, and work hard to make China stronger. In this way, his spirit will live on forever.

D. he wanted to develop nuclear submarines
13. In the 1950s, why did Huang Xuhua and his team didn’t contact with the outside world?
