How Long to Spend at the Met
The museum is massive. It also has a dense collection of paintings and sculptures. You could easily spend the entire day or more inside, but that will really depend on why you’re headed to NYC.
I can tell you from experience that 3 hours tends to be the limit for most people. After that, you may get a bit tired — unless you have a deep passion for art. Personally, I stick by that same rule. Your mind can only absorb so much beauty at one time!
If you’re an avid (狂热的) museum-goer and really want to spend longer than that, then I highly recommend taking a break in a café or sitting in a nice spot every 75 minutes or so. If you go in the afternoon, then a break means a cocktail (鸡尾酒)!

Growing up in Kansas, US, Erin Brockovich struggled in school and recalls feelings overcome by learning even as early as the second grade. Like many others with learning struggles, she wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood, so additional resources weren’t made available to her.
Erin credits one teacher in particular, Ms Borseff, with causing major change in her life. This teacher was the first to notice that Erin understood the coursework even though she consistently failed written exams. Trying to strategize creatively, Ms Borseff verbally presented exam questions to her and convinced the other teachers to do the same. Erin passed the tests with flying colors!
Instantly, both her self-respect and self-value increased greatly. Ms Borseff found this minor change to be the crucial first key in helping Erin unlock her potential in learning. Erin knew she was capable of learning, as did Ms Borseff, so working together toward her goals helped empower her to learn. She decided right then to never let her disability stop her from reaching her goals. Erin continued her education based on her passions and successfully completed community college. Later she became a legal clerk, and her diligent work on the lawsuit against Pacific Gas and Electric helped bring about the largest settlement in history, totaling $333 million.
Erin is still working as a successful activist to improve the environment. She has gone on to become president of her own law consulting firm. She empowers individuals in trouble with her own struggle stories. Erin has even written a book titled Take it from Me: Life’s a Struggle But You Can Win. She is a passionate advocate for children with learning disabilities and recently opened up about her personal struggles with reading difficulties in the documentary: Journey into Dyslexia.
Erin’s real-world success is in large part due to her experience overcoming reading difficulties. The lessons she learned throughout those hardships directly prepared her to be strong, diligent, determined and creative.
4. What was the problem facing Erin in childhood?
A. She couldn’t read normally.
B. She was unwilling to go to school.
C. She gained few learning resources.
D. She didn’t get along well with her teachers.
5. What did Ms Borseff do most significantly?
A. She treated Erin equally.
B. She gave Erin a simpler paper.
C. She adopted a special test mode for Erin.
D. She persuaded the other teachers to sponsor Erin.
6. Which of the following best describes the effect of “this minor change”?
A. Puzzling. B. Predictable. C. Short-lived. D. Far-reaching.
7. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. Erin is famous in the legal field.
B. Erin inspires people with her stories.
C. Erin becomes a well-known writer.
D. Erin has done a lot for the environment.

The human voice is a delicate thing. Each person’s distinctive voice is produced when air from the lungs causes the vocal cords (声带) to vibrate (震动). These vocal cords can easily get damaged. According to a 2005 study, 30% of the population will experience a voice disorder at some point in their life.
In a study published in the journal Nature Communications this week, a group of bioengineering researchers from the University of California have put forward an attractive solution. They have designed and tested a soft patch (小片) that can be stuck onto a person’s neck, where it will pick up muscle movements and, with the help of machine-learning algorithms (算法) that process the signals, translate them into speech.
When a person loses their voice today, the easiest fix is to turn to typing, texting, or writing notes to communicate. Typing can be convenient but slow, says Jun Chen, the paper’s lead author, and writing notes is only possible in good lighting. The new solution would therefore be able to clear all these hurdles.
Dr. Chen’s device works based on something called the magnetoelastic (磁电的) effect. Essentially, when tiny magnetic (磁性的) bits are placed into soft materials, their magnetic properties can change as the material is stretched.
When the throat muscles move under the soft patch, the resulting magnetoelastic effect can be changed into electrical signals. In a test with eight participants, the variations can be changed by electrical signals.
Researchers recorded the signals as the subjects spoke and mouthed five different sentences. They then trained a machine-learning model which was then able to predict which of the five sentences the participants spoke — whether aloud or in silence — with more than 90% accuracy.
There is a way to go yet, for now the device can only recognize the five phrases it was trained on. Plus, to make it practical at scale, the researchers will need to collect a lot more data.
8. In paragraph 1, the author mainly wants to tell us that ________.
A. lungs are easily damaged
B. the human voice is unique
C. vocal cords vibrate to produce sound
D. voice disorders are a problem worthy of attention
9. Why does the author mention the magnetoelastic effect?
A. To explain the working principle.
B. To introduce a key technical component.
C. To highlight the device’s market potential.
D. To emphasize the challenges of voice disorder treatment.
10. What is the function of the soft patch?
A. Predicting five different sentences.
B. Destroying the background magnetic field.
C. Slowing the movements of throat muscles.
D. Helping turn muscle movements into electrical signals.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Predicting the Importance of Voice Restoration
B. Using Algorithms in Bioengineering Research
C. Overcoming Voice Loss with an Innovative Patch
D. Finding the Principle of Communication Devices
D
Scientists have been looking at DNA to store all types of data, not just biological, but also digital. Yet while DNA is a great storage material, it’s also quite delicate. Water or heat can damage it easily unless it’s given an amber-like (似琥珀) coating. That new idea was borrowed from the 1993movie Jurassic Park, in which scientists cloned dinosaurs from DNA trapped in amber.
DNA is the world’s oldest data storage device. The most amazing thing about DNA is that it can potentially be used to store any type of data. Putting information into DNA uses a process called encoding. “Your computer stores information in a binary format (二进制), zeroes and ones,” notes Karishma Matange, a computational biologist. “Encoding works to change these zeroes and ones into A, C, G and T, the DNA bases that can store information.” The order of the bases in DNA is called sequence (序列), which spells out the information it holds. To pull information back out from the DNA, you rewind the process.
Scientists can store DNA for long periods. But it requires freezing temperatures, special equipment and dangerous chemicals, which makes the process costly. James Banal, a scientist in San Carlos, California, and his team came up with a new method T-REX. His team uses this method to trap DNA in a material similar to plastic. “Plastics are durable.” Banal points out. Besides, T-REX is a cheap alternative to enclose DNA.
To test it, the team encoded the Jurassic Park theme music and a person’s genome into DNA. Then they put the DNA in the glassy plastic. Damp and heat are DNA’s biggest threats. But the T-REX material keeps damp out. The researchers heated it up to 75° Celsius. Later, they got the DNA by breaking the coating down. The best part, Banal says, is that the broken-down material can be reused to store DNA again.
Banal and his colleagues want to use the T-REX method to preserve genetic data or even safely store biological samples that will be launched into space. And we might one day use it to store the massive amounts of data people generate every day.
12. How is digital information stored into DNA?
A. By turning binary code into DNA bases.
B. By freezing the DNA at low temperatures.
C. By coating the DNA with amber material.
D. By sequencing DNA from ancient samples.
13. What is the main advantage of the T-REX method for DNA storage?
A. Breaking DNA down with chemicals.
B. Offering cost-effective storage of DNA.
C. Helping DNA survive extreme wetness.
D. Withdrawing whole DNA from dinosaurs.
14. What will the DNA storage technology be used for in the future?
A. Cloning extinct dinosaurs. B. Reducing global plastic pollution.
C. Preserving diverse samples. D. Speeding future space exploration.
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. A breakthrough in DNA data storage technology.
B. How digital technology advances DNA analysis.
C. The biological applications of DNA repairing system.
D. How Jurassic Park inspired DNA preservation research.

Winston Sinclair’s quiet evening was interrupted by a squat grey robot at his door. The machine delivered an apology video from Karl Anderson, a former colleague who sabotaged Winston’s job application at Future Industries nine years prior. Karl confessed to spreading rumors that Winston was “impossible to work with,” driven by fear of competition.
Initially furious—“THAT SCOUNDREL!”—Winston recalled his dashed career hopes. Yet his wife Elizabeth reminded him: missing that job led him to IndustriCorp, where they met, married, and had their daughter Rachel. “Things worked out just fine,” she said. Winston accepted Karl’s apology, realizing life’s unexpected blessings.
The robot then demanded Winston record his own apology, calibrated to match Karl’s in “value.” His trivial confessions—scratching a hover-bike, childhood theft—were rejected as “insufficient.” Finally, Winston recalled breaking Cherisse’s heart at 22. The robot approved: “Value is sufficient.”
As Winston apologized for fleeing love out of fear, he felt “lighter,” mirroring Karl’s catharsis. The robot departed to deliver both messages. Watching it vanish into the night, Winston—inspired—declared: “I’m going to build a robot.”
This encounter bridged past regrets and present gratitude. Winston’s journey from resentment to forgiveness, and his resolve to create his own reconciling machine, underscored the transformative power of accountability and serendipity.

15 What’s the main idea of the text?
A. A breakthrough in DNA data storage technology.
B. How digital technology advances DNA analysis.
C. The biological applications of DNA repairing system.
D. How Jurassic Park inspired DNA preservation research.

第二节(25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

However, when he activated the robot for the first time, its screen flickered unexpectedly, displaying a familiar face from his past.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 With tools scattered across the workbench, Winston stared at the blueprints of his homemade robot, determined to create a machine that could heal broken relationships. Winston’s robot, designed with emotional recognition algorithms guiding users to vulnerability over hollow apologies, emerged from nights soldering circuits. Testing staged a sandbox quarrel, the bot asking, “What hurt your heart?” sparked tearful reconciliation. Yet doubting machinery’s capacity for human messiness, he added a “silent listening” mode, inspired by Karl’s video resolving rage.
However, when he activated the robot for the first time, its screen flickered unexpectedly, displaying a familiar face from his past. Cherisse’s aged yet unmistakable features materialized, eyes filled with tears. The machine had tracked her down, cross-referencing Winston’s apology with her digital footprints. “Message pending delivery,” it intoned. Winston’s hands trembled. Before he could abort, Cherisse’s live response played: “I waited years to hear that.” Her voice softened. “But seeing you build this… maybe some fractures make room for better things.” The camera captured Winston’s stunned reflection beside Rachel’s crayon drawings, weaving past and present into a single frame of healing.
