These electric cars will communicate with other cars on the road to travel safely in close formation at high speeds.

     Raising animals is not an efficient way to produce food, and it harms the environment: Cows, chickens, and pigs eat a lot, and then we have to deal with all that poop（粪便）. What’s more, that poop can end up poisoning lakes, rivers, and streams. Today, scientists can “grow” meat in a lab from animal cells, but it’s expensive and not very delicious. Scientists in Israel have discovered a new way to test for water pollution by “listening” to what the plants growing in water have to say.

By shining a laser beam (激光束) on the tiny pieces of algae floating in the water, the researchers said they hear sound waves that tell them the type and amount of contamination (致污物) in the water.

“It is a red light, telling us that something is beginning to go wrong with the quality of water,” said Zvy Dubinsky, an aquatic biologist (水生生物学家) at Israel’s Bar Ilan University. “Algae is the first thing to be affected by a change in water quality.” “The secret,” he said, “is to measure the rate of photosynthesis (光合作用) in the algae, meaning the plant’s ability to transform light into energy.” During photosynthesis, plants also release oxygen into the air.

Dubinsky’s technique is easy to perform because of the over-abundance (过于丰富) of algae in the planet’s water. Most of the oxygen in the atmosphere comes from algae. A prototype tester （样本测试机）that occupies about one square meter of a laboratory desktop, shoots a laser beam at water samples to stimulate （刺激） photosynthesis in the algae. But not all of the laser’s heat is used. Depending on the condition of the algae and the rate of photosynthesis, some of the heat is shot back into the water, creating sound waves, Dubinsky said. With a special underwater microphone, researchers are able to analyze the strength of the sound waves and determine the health of the algae and the condition of the surrounding water.

“Algae suffering from lead poisoning, like waste discharged from battery and paint manufacturing plants, will produce a different sound than those suffering from lack of iron or exposure to other toxins,” said researcher Yulia Pinchasov. She said that testing algae photosynthesis can determine water quality more accurately and easily than labor-intensive methods now used like chemical and radioactive carbon testing.

Robots have been an important part of science fiction since the beginning of cinema itself. The following films are the best in terms of their description of robots:

The granddaddy of bad robots, The Terminator is a vicious killing machine that will do whatever it takes to kill his target, Sarah Connor, including murdering other people that just happen to share her name. And although the sequels（续集）have featured some pretty impressive robots, especially T-1000 in Terminator2: Judgment Day, it’s the director James Cameron’s original creation that remains a real classic.

Star Wars: A New Hope (produced by Lucasfilm)

The entire Star Wars series is full of robots and cyborgs（半机械人）and various other artificial life forms, but it was 1977’s Star Wars A New Hope that first introduced the world a pair of lovable robots named C- 3PO and R2- D2. The pair’s unusual friendship plays an important role in the movie series, which confirms their place as perhaps the most famous non-living characters in cinematic history.

WALL-E (produced by Pixar)

It’s hard to believe that WALL-E doesn’t speak a word of language throughout the movie, as the character eventually becomes a caring and emotional figure. WALL-E’s pursuit (追求) of a fellow robot is romantic and interesting. And it’s impossible not to feel a burst of emotion when the pair finally do get together at the end of the movie.

Based on the famous short story collection by Issac Asimov, I, Robot happens in a world that’s overrun by robots, as the artificial life forms perform a variety of daily life tasks and jobs. At the center of the storyline is Sonny, a robot who possesses a desire to overcome his rigid programming and become more than just a machine.

Luka Tavcar, 12, has muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症) and is totally dependent on his wheelchair. However, late last year, he hatched an inspired plan: to be photographed walking around and having fun.
    He approached Matej Peljhan, an amateur photographer and a psychologist at CIRIUS rehabilitation (康复) center near Ljubljana, Slovenia, where Luka is a patient.
