But I am here to share my idea. Winning does not always equal success. Back to nineteen ninety, when I was first made the head coach of the U. CL. A women's dynastic CS team, I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to figure out how to win. So I became tough talking and mean, our team asked me for a team meeting for over two hours. They gave me examples of how my arrogance was hurtful, then I chose to change. IT is so much easier to give orders than to figure out how to motivate someone to be Better. We all know this motivation takes a really long time to take root. The key to promote motivation is to develop trust through patients and honesty. We are all coaches. In some ways, we all have the responsibility to develop champions in life for our world. This is what real success looks like, and that is what we call a win win. On a sunny morning in 2001, Jim, a skilled diver and ocean lover, was diving as usual around Palm Beach in the Bahamas when he spotted a giant tiger shark circling a few feet away. The shark, which he later named Emma, was clearly struggling in pain. Seeing Jim, Emma swam close to him seemingly quite on purpose. With great fear and curiosity, Jim checked and found a fishing hook in Emma’s mouth. Despite the obvious risks, he managed to pull the hook out, careful not to cause any further injury to the animal. Jim has since removed four other hooks from Emma’s mouth on several occasions and sometimes freed her from fishing lines or plastic bags. The two have become inseparable.
Every time Jim goes into the water in the area of Palm Beach, Emma comes around and rubs her head against him as a sign of affection (喜爱). It’s not the kind of behavior most people would expect from tiger sharks, which could easily tear a person apart. “When you suddenly come across a huge shark, it seems like it might end your life,” Jim said. “What makes Emma so special is that she’s so loving and affectionate. She’s not a mindless killer but a sentient (有感情的) animal just like cats and dogs.”
Emma will always recognize Jim every time he dives in her area even if he changes diving equipment. Over time, she has learned his hand signals — an invitation to get her head rubbed and Jim claims that she started acting like a playful dog who loves being petted.
“What makes Emma so special is that she’s so loving and affectionate. She’s not a mindless killer but a sentient (有感情的) animal just like cats and dogs.” Jim said. “To have a connection that lasts the entire time you`re in the water is so moving and so influential. C
One side effect of globalization and the related phenomenon of greatly increased mobility (流动性) is that the traditional definition of “foreigner” has passed its “best-before date”.
Is a European who has lived in China longer than in his home country, becoming fluent in the language and knowing the culture well in the process, still a foreigner in China, or has he become more of a foreigner in his own hometown? What about a Beijinger who had her schooling in Canada and then lived and worked there for another 20 years while raising a family who has no intention of returning to China? Does she think and act like a foreigner? What do we mean by this label (标签)?
When I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the faces I would see during a walk through a local shopping mall back in the 1960s and 1970s included almost none of Asian descent (血统). Today the local malls are full of Asian faces, and a glance at the ranks of top-scoring students in local schools reveals lots of Asian surnames.
To some extent, this is no great surprise in the American context, because America is a land of immigrants, and a cultural melting pot. Apart from the native American Indians, Americans are (or were), in some way, all foreigners anyway. Absorbing a large number of immigrants is an established pattern in American history.
In most places, the traditional foreigners were people who didn’t speak or read the local languages well and were unfamiliar with local customs and lifestyles. But, nowadays, a foreigner walking down the street may have better SAT scores than you, or a higher degree from a better university.
The traditional role models are getting mixed up, and it looks like this is just the beginning of a new chapter. Today, the whole thing has totally changed. It’s not about where people are from or what color their skins are. It’s about who they are, what values and skills they bring, and how they think.
28.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.The term “foreigner” should be redefined.
B.The term “foreigner” should no longer be used.
C.There are no more foreigners in the world today.
D.The term “foreigner” is not proper to define people.
29.What does the author tend to tell us by mentioning a European and a Beijinger?
A.It’s no longer proper to define foreigners according to their birthplaces.
B.The label of foreigners can never be removed.
C.Most foreigners can do well in learning languages.
D.It’s impossible for a foreigner to get recognition abroad.
30.What can be inferred from the third paragraph?
A.In 1960s and 1970s, Asians didn’t shop in Chicago.
B.Today, more and more Asian travellers like to shop in Chicago.
C.There are more Asian people today than in the 1960s and 1970s in Chicago.
D.Most Asian students do well academically in the schools in Chicago.
31.What is the author’s attitude to the changing definition of “foreigner”?
A.Confused B.Disappointed C.Unconcerned D.Positive
D
Scientists have taken pictures of a star that is farther away than any single star ever seen. They were only able to see the star because gravity made it look bigger. The star, which has been called Icarus, is nine billion light years away. A light year is a very long distance — about 6 trillion miles. That’s how far light can travel in one year in space.
Icarus was created when the universe was very young. The star was a blue “supergiant” — much bigger and brighter than the sun. It took the light from the star about 9 billion years to reach the earth. It may seem strange, but the star is not even there any more. Actually, the light it made is still traveling through space.
Patrick Kelly worked with other scientists and NASA to spot the star. They used a telescope (望远镜) that NASA had put into space, called the Hubble Space Telescope. Mr. Kelly said, “This star is at least 100 times farther away than the next star we can study.” Icarus was so far away that the scientists needed more than just the Hubble Telescope to spot it.
The scientists were able to see the star because of gravity. Gravity doesn’t just pull things toward each other, it can also bend (使弯曲) light. When the light gets bent, it can make things look bigger. Scientists call this gravitational lensing.
Something really big was needed to magnify (放大) a star so far away — something even bigger than a galaxy! A galaxy is a huge group of stars. It was a whole group of galaxies that bent the light so that Icarus was big enough to see. The group of galaxies made it look 2,000 times bigger.
Scientists are excited about a new space telescope that NASA is planning. They hope that it may help them see Icarus better.
32.What makes it possible for scientists to see the star Icarus?
A.Gravity. B.Open space.
C.A spaceship. D.A short distance.
33.How do scientists benefit from gravitational lensing?
A.They can know the speed of light. B.They use it to track objects in space.
C.They can change the direction of light. D.They follow it to get close to the telescope.
34.What do scientists expect of the new telescope?
A.It will unlock the hidden secret of gravity. B.It will replace the current space telescope.
C.It will recognize the gravity on the moon. D.It will enable them to further study the star.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce a space station. B.To announce a space mission.
C.To share a scientific discovery. D.To explain a new study on light.
Have you ever started a new task at work, only to be distracted (干扰) by a ding on your phone? Or perhaps you’re in the middle of a report, and your mind starts to wander to what you’ll have for dinner. If you find yourself familiar with any of these scenes, don’t worry. 36 Now let’s explore the reasons behind these distractions.
Our brains are naturally easy to be distracted. They are wonderfully complex machines designed to absorb new information and adapt to our environment. 37 They always quickly change our attention to the new stimulus (刺激), causing us to lose focus on our current task.
38 It’s fortunate for us to have access to technology and the Internet, which provide a wealth of resources for learning, connecting, and entertaining ourselves. But this blessing is double-edged. The tools that help improve productivity can also lead to distractions.
We have a short attention span (持续时间). 39 It’s said that our attention span has a cap, much like the limit on a fuel tank (油箱). And once we hit that upper limit, our focus begins searching for other limits, like a traveler eager for new landscapes.
In our daily life, distractions come in many forms and the sources of distractions can vary widely. The path to a more focused and productive life isn’t necessarily about removing all distractions. It’s an impossible task in this age of information. 40
A.We live in a world full of distractions.
B.We have poor time management skills.
C.But this strength can also be a weakness.
D.This isn’t necessarily because of a lack of interest.
E.Regaining your focus might be harder than you think.
F.You’re just part of a much larger group than you imagine.
G.Instead, learn to acknowledge and manage them effectively.

It was a typical weekend, filled with laughter and warmth. Little did they know something unexpected was just around the corner.
As Mary was busy with the food, a fire broke out in the kitchen. Panicked, Mary took hold of Jack and rushed towards the front door. They made it to safety only to find James remained stuck inside. Mary put Jack down and turned back to get James out, but in such a hurry and panic, she missed a step and fell on the ground. Her right ankle got sprained so seriously that she couldn`t stand up. Mary sat on the ground helplessly, her tears mixed with screams, “My kid is still in the house. Somebody, help me!”
At that very moment, Simon, 52, a former army soldier in the same community as Mary, happened to pass her house and saw the terrible scene. He immediately ran across the yard to ask the crying mother where her kid exactly was. In a shaking voice, Mary responded, “In the bedroom next to the kitchen.” The fire spread quickly and the house was filled with thick smoke. Simon looked around and saw a blanket hanging beside a pool full of water in the middle of the yard.

W: I have a question for all of us. Is all winning success? Winning is really, really fun. But I am here to share my idea: Winning does not always equal success. Back to 1990, when I was first made the head coach of the UCLA Women's Gymnastics Team. I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to figure out how to win. So I became tough-talking and mean. Our team asked me for a team meeting for over two hours. They gave me examples of how my arrogance was hurtful. Then I chose to change. It is so much easier to give orders than to figure out how to motivate someone to be better. We all know this motivation takes a really long time to take root. The key to promote motivation is to develop trust through patience and honesty. We are all coaches in some ways. We all have the responsibility to develop champions in life for our world. This is what real success looks like, and that is what we call a win-win.

One of the best things that have happened to me is the discovery of the affectionate aspect of this tiger shark.”
24.What might be the reason why Emma approached Jim initially?
A.To greet him. B.To seek assistance.
C.To ask for food. D.To make friends with him.
25.What makes Emma unique according to Jim?
A.Her enormous body. B.Her feeding ability.
C.Her high research value. D.Her pet-like character.
26.What can we learn from the text?
A.Emma can read Jim`s sign language.
B.Emma has never attacked human beings.
C.Jim once saved Emma from a deadly disease.
D.Jim has removed four hooks from Emma`s mouth.
27.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.A Diver and His Odd Friend
B.An Exciting Diving Experience
C.Jim: A Person Devoted to Ocean Protection
D.Palm Beach: An Ideal Base for Shark Watching
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.A 27.A
根据文章第一段中的“Seeing Jim, Emma swam close to him seemingly quite on purpose. With great fear and curiosity, Jim checked and found a fishing hook in Emma’s mouth. (看到吉姆,艾玛似乎是故意游向他。带着极大的恐惧和好奇,吉姆检查了一下,发现艾玛嘴里叼着一个鱼钩。)”可知,Emma靠近Jim是为了寻求帮助。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“What makes Emma so special is that she’s so loving and affectionate. She’s not a mindless killer but a sentient animal just like cats and dogs. (艾玛的特别之处在于她充满爱心和深情。她不是一个没有头脑的杀手,而是像猫和狗一样有感情的动物。)”可知,Jim认为Emma的特别之处在于她像宠物一样的性格。故选D。
26.细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“Over time, she has learned his hand signals — an invitation to get her head rubbed and Jim claims that she started acting like a playful dog who loves being petted. (随着时间的推移,她学会了他的手势——邀请她摸摸头的手势,吉姆说她开始表现得像一只喜欢被抚摸的顽皮的狗。)”可知,艾玛能读懂吉姆的手势。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是由文章最后一段中的“To have a connection that lasts the entire time you`re in the water is so moving and so influential. One of the best things that have happened to me is the discovery of the affectionate aspect of this tiger shark. (你在水里的整个时间都有一种联系,这种联系是如此感人,如此有影响力。发生在我身上的最好的事情之一就是发现了这只虎鲨深情的一面。)”可知,文章讲述了潜水员Jim和虎鲨Emma之间的特殊友谊,因此“A Diver and His Odd Friend (潜水员和他的奇怪朋友)”是最佳标题。故选A。
【答案】28.A 29.A 30.C 31.D
根据第一段“One side effect of globalization and the related phenomenon of greatly increased mobility (流动性) is that the traditional definition of “foreigner” has passed its “best-before date”. (全球化和流动性大大增加的相关现象的一个副作用是,“外国人”的传统定义已经过了“最佳日期”。)”可知,传统上对“外国人”的定义已经过时,所以需要重新定义。故选A。
根据第二段“Is a European who has lived in China longer than in his home country, becoming fluent in the language and knowing the culture well in the process, still a foreigner in China, or has he become more of a foreigner in his own hometown? What about a Beijinger who had her schooling in Canada and then lived and worked there for another 20 years while raising a family who has no intention of returning to China? Does she think and act like a foreigner? What do we mean by this label (标签)? (一个在中国生活的时间比在自己的祖国长,在这个过程中精通语言并熟悉文化的欧洲人,在中国还是外国人,还是在自己的家乡变得更像外国人?如果一个北京人在加拿大上学,然后在那里生活和工作了20年,同时养育了一个不打算回中国的家庭,那该怎么办?她像外国人一样思考和行动吗?这个标签是什么意思?)”可知,根据出生地来定义是否是外国人是不合适的。故选A。
根据第三段“When I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the faces I would see during a walk through a local shopping mall back in the 1960s and 1970s included almost none of Asian descent (血统). Today the local malls are full of Asian faces, and a glance at the ranks of top-scoring students in local schools reveals lots of Asian surnames. (当我在芝加哥郊区长大时,我在20世纪60年代和70年代穿过当地购物中心时看到的面孔几乎没有亚裔。如今,当地的商场里到处都是亚洲人的面孔,只要看看当地学校得分最高的学生的排名,就会发现很多亚洲人的姓氏。)”可知,今天芝加哥的亚洲人比上世纪六七十年代要多。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The traditional role models are getting mixed up, and it looks like this is just the beginning of a new chapter. Today, the whole thing has totally changed. It’s not about where people are from or what color their skins are. It’s about who they are, what values and skills they bring, and how they think. (传统的榜样正在被混淆,看起来这只是一个新篇章的开始。今天,整个事情完全改变了。这与人们来自哪里或他们的皮肤是什么颜色无关。这是关于他们是谁,他们带来了什么价值观和技能,以及他们是如何思考的。)”可知,作者对“外国人”定义的变化是很赞同的。故选D。
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.D 35.C
根据第一段第二句“They were only able to see the star because gravity made it look bigger.(他们之所以能看到这颗恒星,是因为重力让它看起来更大)”可知,重力使科学家能够看到伊卡洛斯星。故选A。
根据第四段“The scientists were able to see the star because of gravity. Gravity doesn’t just pull things toward each other, it can also bend (使弯曲) light. When the light gets bent, it can make things look bigger. Scientists call this gravitational lensing.(由于重力的作用,科学家们能够看到那颗恒星。重力不仅能把物体拉向彼此,还能使光线弯曲。当光线弯曲时,它可以使物体看起来更大。科学家称之为引力透镜)”可知,科学家通过引力透镜效应来追踪太空中的物体。故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Scientists are excited about a new space telescope that NASA is planning. They hope that it may help them see Icarus better.(科学家们对美国国家航空航天局正在计划的一架新的太空望远镜感到兴奋。他们希望这能帮助他们更好地了解伊卡洛斯)”可知,科学家们希望新的太空望远镜能让他们进一步研究这颗恒星。故选D。

【答案】36.F 37.C 38.A 39.D 40.G
36.前文“Have you ever started a new task at work, only to be distracted (干扰) by a ding on your phone? Or perhaps you’re in the middle of a report, and your mind starts to wander to what you’ll have for dinner. If you find yourself familiar with any of these scenes, don’t worry.(你是否曾经在工作中开始了一项新任务,却被手机铃声分散了注意力?或者你正在写一份报告,你的思绪开始游荡到晚餐吃什么。如果你发现自己熟悉这些场景中的任何一个,不要担心。)”说明如果做事情的时候分心了,不要担心,因此推断空处应是说明理由,后文“你只是一个比你想象的大得多的群体中的一员。”符合语境,与前文是因果关系。故选F。
37.前文“They are wonderfully complex machines designed to absorb new information and adapt to our environment.(它们是非常复杂的机器,旨在吸收新信息并适应我们的环境。)”说明大脑是用来吸收新信息的机器,后文“They always quickly change our attention to the new stimulus(刺激), causing us to lose focus on our current task.(它们总是迅速将我们的注意力转移到新的刺激上,导致我们失去对当前任务的关注。)”
38.空处为段落标题,根据后文“It’s fortunate for us to have access to technology and the Internet, which provide a wealth of resources for learning, connecting, and entertaining ourselves. But this blessing is double-edged. The tools that help improve productivity can also lead to distractions.(我们很幸运能够接触到科技和互联网,它们为我们学习、交流和娱乐提供了丰富的资源。但这是一把双刃剑。有助于提高工作效率的工具也可能导致分心。)”说明科技和互联网是一把双刃剑,尽管有助于提高工作效率,但是也导致分心,因此推断A项“我们生活在一个充满分心的世界。”为最佳标题。故选A。
39.根据标题“We have a short attention span(持续时间).(我们的注意力持续时间很短。)” 符合语境,说明我们的注意力持续时间短的理由,下文讲述了真正可能的理由“It’s said that our attention span has a cap, much like the limit on a fuel tank(油箱). And once we hit that upper limit, our focus begins searching for other limits, like a traveler eager for new landscapes.(据说我们的注意力持续时间是有上限的,就像油箱的极限一样。一旦我们达到了这个上限,我们的注意力就会开始寻找其他的极限,就像一个渴望新风景的旅行者一样。)”。故选D。
40.前文“The path to a more focused and productive life isn’t necessarily about removing all distractions. It’s an impossible task in this age of information.(通往更专注、更有成效的生活的道路并不一定要消除所有的干扰。在这个信息时代,这是一项不可能完成的任务。)”说明消除所有的干扰是不可能的,因此推断下文给出解决办法,因此推断G项“相反,学会承认并有效地管理它们。”符合语境,与前文是转折关系。故选G。

36-year-old Mary was a single mother living in a small town in Cleveland, Ohio with her 3-year-old twin sons, Jack and James. She worked hard to provide for her children, doing a few part-time jobs to make ends meet. In spite of the challenges, Mary managed to give them a happy and stable childhood.
One Saturday morning, Mary was at home with her children, preparing breakfast for them. Jack was beside her while James was playing alone in the bedroom next to the kitchen.

Without hesitation, Simon took action. Dipping the blanket in the water pool and covering his head with it for necessary protection, he rushed into the house. Unable to see things clearly through the smoke and fire, Simon lowered himself to the ground, stretched his hands and felt his way forward until he reached the bedroom. Just then, a faint voice of a child caught his attention. Following the sound, he finally found James lying in a corner, frightened and helpless. He grabbed James, wrapped him in the blanket and made his way back towards the open door.
Simon rushed out of the burning house with James in his arms. Seeing James carried to safety, Mary breathed a sigh of relief. At that moment, firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the fire. Then Simon, Mary and her children were all sent to a nearby hospital, where they received timely medical care. Simon’s heroic act saved James’ life. Mary couldn’t thank him enough for his selflessness and bravery. But Simon said smilingly, “It was no big deal. I just did what I was supposed to do.” This experience brought the community closer, and Simon`s courageous act inspired others to consider what they would do in similar situations.
