China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) has made a big achievement in deep-earth exploration (探测). China’s first 10,000-meter scientific exploration well (井), Shenditage 1, was successfully completed at a depth of 10,910 meters in the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang.
After China’s “Chang’e Lunar Mission” explored space and the “Jiaolong Submersible” went deep into the sea, we’ve now made great progress in deep-earth exploration. Shenditage 1 is in the middle of the Taklimakan Desert, a really dangerous place. It set a new Asian record for deep-earth drilling (钻探), and we used our own tools to do it.
The drilling was really hard. From the surface to 10,000 meters, it took only 279 days to reach 10,000 meters, but the last 910 meters took over 300 days because the underground conditions were so difficult. There were problems like tool failures and holes falling down. But with new technology and tools, Chinese engineers managed to solve these problems and made a big breakthrough. They finally drilled the well successfully to 10,910 meters and found important signs of oil. Before that, no one could do this, so it was a great new thing.
Shenditake 1 didn’t just go to a very deep place that set a record. It also found some really important things in science. It got the first samples (样本) from 10,000 meters underground in China and found signs of oil on land at such a depth for the first time. These findings help us understand deepearth geology (地质学) better and are useful for future oil and gas exploration.
This success is an important step for China’s deepearth drilling. Shenditage 1 shows that China is getting better at science and technology. It will encourage more scientists and engineers to keep exploring the earth.
根据语篇内容,选择最佳选项。
52. Where was Shenditage 1 successfully completed?
A. In a safe place.
B. In the middle of Taklimakan Desert.
C. In the edge of Taklimakan Desert.
53. Which of the following pictures shows the drilling way?
A. B. C.
54. What does the underline word “breakthrough” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. 普通尝试 B. 重大突破 C. 新的问题
55. What can we infer (推断) from the last two paragraphs?
A. Shenditage 1’s findings mainly help other countries’ oil exploration.
B. Shenditage l’s success mostly depends on the large amount of money spent.
C. Shenditage 1 helps with understanding deep-earth geology.
56. What is the main idea of the passage?

Tom is a big fan of traditional Chinese calligraphy (书法), and he has also been learning Chinese history and likes Chinese culture.
Unlike many of his classmates,14-year-old Tom practices calligraphy in a special way. “I mix modern music with the step of writing calligraphy. It makes the practice more interesting,” he said. Tom has been learning calligraphy for about 5 years. On his blog, he often posts pictures of his calligraphy works and short videos about his learning experiences. In these videos, he is sometimes seen wearing a traditional Chinese Hanfu (汉服), which makes his posts quite eye-catching among other bloggers.
“Calligraphy is like a bridge that connects me to ancient Chinese wisdom. The more I practice it, the more I’m interested in China’s long-standing history and deep culture,” Tom shared.
In recent times, Tom noticed that more of his classmates in the UK are getting interested in China. “Some of my friends started asking me about Chinese festivals and traditional handicrafts (手工艺品) after seeing my posts. It’s really exciting,” he said. Some local community centers have even invited Tom to give small talks about Chinese calligraphy and culture. During these talks, he is always inspired by the interest in his listeners’ eyes, which encourages him to explore more about his loved Chinese culture.
Chinese traditional culture is really amazing. It not only brings joy to people like Tom, but also helps us understand different countries better. Let’s all work together to spread and protect our great traditional culture!
