They are the sort of friends who are so close that they trust each other with their lives. If one falls, the other is there to catch him.
They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently (永久地) injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident, and Corbett, an experienced rock climber. Together, they climbed up Half Dome, the famous 2,000-foot rock in the Yosemite National Park, through one of the most difficult routes (路线).
During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes (尖状物) that guided the ropes and climbed up. Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again, inch by inch, for 13 days. Wellman’s job was not easy, either. He got himself up the rope through his upper body strength alone. In all, Wellman figured that he had done 5,000 pull-ups up the rope on the climb.
However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. “He knew that was how I got injured,” Wellman said. Until one day Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.
Their climb of Hall Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend’s life.
“Your partner can save your life. You can save your partner’s life,” Wellman said as the pair received congratulations from friends. “There are real close ties.”
4. Why did the two men never talk about climbing when they first met?
A. Corbett’ was poorly trained. B. Corbett didn’t want to hurt Wellman.

5. What do we know about Wellman?

B. He was disabled when climbing rocks.
C. He was saved by Corbett during the climb.
D. He climbed through his lower body strength with Corbett.
6. Which of the following was a challenge for Corbett in climbing Half Dome?

Experts are warning about the risks of extreme picky (挑剔的) eating after a teenager living on a diet of chips and crisps developed lasting sight loss. Eye doctors in Bristol cared for the 17-year-old boy after his sight had gone to the point of blindness. Tests showed he had serious vitamin deficiency (缺乏). Dr. Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said, “His diet was basically a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on crisps and sometimes white bread and ham, and not really any fruit and vegetables.”
The teenager saw his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet. Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss.
He was not overweight or underweight, but he had lost minerals from his bones, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age. In terms of his sight loss, he met the standards of being blind. “He had blind spots right in the middle of his sight,” said Dr. Denize Atan. “That means he can’t drive and would find it really difficult to read, watch TV or recognize faces.”
Dr. Denize Atan said that parents should learn about the harm that can be caused by picky eating, and turn to experts for help. For those who are concerned, she advised, “It’s best not to be anxious about picky eating, and instead calmly introduce one or two new foods with every meal.” She said multivitamin tablets can supplement (补充) a diet, but cannot take the place of eating healthily. “It’s much better to take in vitamins through a varied and balanced diet.” she said. “Too many certain vitamins, including vitamin A, can be harmful, so you don’t want to overdo it.
8. What does Dr. Denize Atan mean in paragraph 1?
A. The cause of the boy’s disease was unknown.
B. Fruit and vegetables are not rich in vitamins.
C. Picky eating is common among teenagers.
D. The diet of the boy was not balanced.
9. Why did the boy go to see his doctor at the age of 14?
A To improve his poor diet. B. To be treated for his discomfort.
C. To get some help to lose weight. D. To slow down his progressive sight loss.
10. What made Dr. Denize Atan surprised so much according to paragraph 3?
A. The teenager was unable to watch TV or recognize faces.
B. The teenager suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency.
C. The teenager lacked a lot of minerals in his body.
D. The teenager did not stick with the treatment.
11. What is Dr. Denize Atan’s suggestion on picking eating based on the last paragraph?
A. The problem of picky eating is hard to deal with.
B. Most people are not adapted to eating new foods.
C. Taking in vitamins by having various kinds of foods.
D. Taking multivitamin tablets can take the place of eating healthily.

On the journey of life, Father’s love is like a lighthouse, quietly guiding and protecting us through the stormy seas and the calm waters. My dad was a cleaner in my school. When I was12, I decided to study hard to have a life different from his.
One day when Dad asked me to play basketball with him, I just replied, “I’m busy. I want to work hard so that I can become a rich man. I don’t want to be a cleaner like you, Dad!” He was shocked, but I didn’t care and continued studying hard. Finally, I graduated from high school with honors, and decided it was time to break free from my dad and follow my dreams.
“Dad, I got a scholarship (奖学金) to a law school in California,” I told him. “I’ll leave in three days.” My dad was surprised but proud of me. As I left for the airport three days later, he said, “Son, wherever you go, welcome back home.” I ignored his words and flew to California.
After I graduated, I found a great job there. Later, I became a manager and earned much money. I no longer remembered my father was a cleaner. I had forgotten my dad, who was still, cleaning my school, I seldom answered his calls, sent him a message or wrote back to him. I was busy; I still had a lot more to achieve.
With time, the more success I tasted, somehow, the lonelier I became. I felt especially lonely on my 31st birthday. I kept checking my phone, hoping someone wished me a happy birthday. But there wasn’t a single call or message. Later that evening when I returned home from my office, something in my mailbox drew my attention.
“A letter?” I whispered and saw it was from my father. He never forgot to mail me a letter for each of my birthdays. However, I never took the trouble to read it. “How did I ignore him?” I thought. I brought the letter home and took out his earlier letters. And I opened one. It read, “Wherever you are, I love you forever. I wish you a happy life.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
“What did my father express to me in the other letters?” I wondered.

However when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing.
C. Wellman had lost interest in climbing. D. Wellman was going in for another sport.
5. What do we know about Wellman?
A. He climbed Half Dome by himself.
B. He was disabled when climbing rocks.
C. He was saved by Corbett during the climb.
D. He climbed through his lower body strength with Corbett.
6. Which of the following was a challenge for Corbett in climbing Half Dome?
A. To lock the rope in place. B. To do 5,000 pull-ups up the rope.
C. To climb up to remove the spikes. D. To climb it twice.
7. The main idea of the passage is that _________.
A. friendship is precious in life B. two heads are better than one
C. the disabled should never give up D. a man can be destroyed but cannot be defeated

The teenager saw his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet.

We watch our salt and fat intake (摄入) to protect our hearts. We exercise and take calcium to protect our bones. We wear sun-protective clothing to protect our skin. But what can we do to protect our eyes?___16___. We asked experts what lifestyle steps people should be taking to protect our vision and eye health.
Take a break from screens
There’s no scientific evidence that the blue light from electronic screens damages our eyes, but staring at a screen can leave eyes tired and may even blur (使模糊) our vision. The National Institutes of Health recommends taking a break every twenty minutes to look at something about twenty feet away for twenty seconds. ___17___.
Eat for your eyes
You can stop taking medicines that claim to improve eye health. Research shows that foods rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids can help lower the risk of age-related eye problems. For lots of vitamin C, choose strawberries, tomatoes, red and green peppers, and broccoli. For vitamin E, choose peanuts, almonds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin. For zinc, good sources are beef, fortified cereals and especially oysters. For omega-3 fatty acids, look for fish like salmon, tuna and halibut.
___18___
First, the obvious: Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs. It can harm eyes too. “Smoking is terrible,” says Dr. Akpek. “It causes dry eyes and makes eye diseases worse.”
Also, try not to rub your eyes. “Rubbing makes inflammation (炎症) worse,” says Dr. Akpek. “The more you rub, the sicker your eyes will get. It can lead to infections.” “___19___,” Dr. Akpek suggests.
Contact a specialist
___20___. Not all eye problems are noticeable, and all can be best treated when found early.

根据上文“We watch our salt and fat intake to protect our hearts. We exercise and take calcium to protect our bones. We wear sun-protective clothing to protect our skin. But what can we do to protect our eyes? (我们注意盐和脂肪的摄入量以保护心脏。我们锻炼并补充钙以保护骨骼。我们穿防晒衣物以保护皮肤。但我们能做些什么来保护眼睛呢?)”可知,作者通过列举身体各部位的保护方式,引出“如何保护眼睛”的核心问题,下文“We asked experts what lifestyle steps people should be taking to protect our vision and eye health. (我们询问了专家人们应该采取哪些生活方式步骤来保护视力和眼睛健康。)”则指向具体解决方法,E选项“It turns out there are quite a lot we can do(事实证明我们可以做很多事情)”作为过渡句,既回应了上文连续的提问,又自然引出下文的具体建议,逻辑衔接紧密。故选E项。
17题详解】
根据上文“There’s no scientific evidence that the blue light from electronic screens damages our eyes, but staring at a screen can leave eyes tired and may even blur our vision. The National Institutes of Health recommends taking a break every twenty minutes to look at something about twenty feet away for twenty seconds. (没有科学证据表明电子屏幕的蓝光会损害我们的眼睛,但盯着屏幕会让眼睛疲劳,甚至可能模糊我们的视力。美国国立卫生研究院建议每二十分钟休息一次,看二十英尺外的东西二十秒。)”可知,此段重点说明屏幕蓝光本身无害,但长时间注视会导致疲劳,强调休息的重要性。F选项“Glasses that block blue light have no effect(阻挡蓝光的眼镜没有效果)”进一步补充说明蓝光相关内容,与上文“no scientific evidence”形成呼应,通过“have no effect”强化“休息比防蓝光更有效”的观点。故选F项。
根据下文“First, the obvious: Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs. It can harm eyes too. “Smoking is terrible,” says Dr. Akpek. “It causes dry eyes and makes eye diseases worse.”(首先,显而易见的是:吸烟不仅对肺部有害,也会伤害眼睛。Akpek博士说:“吸烟很糟糕,它会导致干眼症,并使眼部疾病恶化。”)”以及“Also, try not to rub your eyes. “Rubbing makes inflammation (炎症) worse,” says Dr. Akpek. “The more you rub, the sicker your eyes will get. It can lead to infections.” (另外,尽量不要揉眼睛。Akpek博士说:“揉眼会使炎症恶化,揉得越多,眼睛就会越糟糕,可能导致感染。”)”可知,此段详细列举了吸烟和揉眼两种不良习惯及其对眼睛的危害,A选项“Give up these bad habits(摒弃这些坏习惯)”作为段落标题,其中“these bad habits”精准指代后文提到的吸烟和揉眼行为,概括段落主旨。故选A项。
根据上文““Rubbing makes inflammation (炎症) worse,” says Dr. Akpek. “The more you rub, the sicker your eyes will get. It can lead to infections.””(Akpek博士说:“揉眼会使炎症恶化,揉得越多,眼睛就会越糟糕,可能导致感染。”)
根据下文“Not all eye problems are noticeable, and all can be best treated when found early. (并非所有眼部问题都显而易见,而且所有问题在早期发现时治疗效果最佳。)”可知,此段强调眼部问题早期发现的重要性。G选项“Don’t forget to see an eye expert for an examination(别忘了去看眼科专家做检查)”直接提出“定期进行专业检查”的建议,与下文“found early”形成因果关系,突出通过专家检查实现早发现、早治疗的必要性。故选G项。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“What did my father express to me in the other letters?” I wondered. I picked up another letter and read it, “Son, I’m really proud of you every day, every minute, and every second.” After I read all the letters, tears rushed out of my eyes. I was touched by my dad’s deep love for me and felt so regretful for not valuing it! Later, my dad sent me a message, saying happy birthday to me. A few days later, I made a decision to head for my hometown. I packed my things and went to the airport to meet my dad after so many years. “Will he be happy to see me? How will I face him?” I asked myself.
Soon the airplane got to the city where my father lived. I took a taxi and arrived at my dad’s house and saw him sitting alone in the yard. He looked up and rose in surprise and with delight. He hugged me and cried before I could even greet him. “I’ve been waiting for your coming every single day, son!” he wept on my shoulder. I quit the job in California and lived with my dad. I realized money isn’t everything. It cannot buy things that are as precious as love and family.
