I am an Inuit boy named Kayla. Inuit are the people who live in cold Arctic (北极的) lands. In my language, Inuit means “the people”. Some people used to call my people Eskimos. We wish to be called Inuit.
I live with my mother, father and two brothers. We live at the most northern part of the world. It is made up of the Arctic Ocean and the land all around it. For months the sea is covered with thick ice. The land is covered with snow and ice most of the year, too.
Winter is long and very cold. It lasts from October to March. It is dark twenty-four hours a day. The sun does not come up to warm the water and land. When the north winds blow, it is even colder. There are days when the temperature is 50℉ below zero. My family is prepared. We wear watertight (防水鞋). We put on many layers (层) of clothes. Outside we always wear a thick warm jacket that has fur inside. I’m not afraid of the cold winters. I guess I’m just used to them.
My family and I look forward to each summer. So much happens in a short time. The temperature usually stays around 50°F. During the summer the sun shines all day and night. This is why the Arctic is called the “land of the midnight sun”.

This year is the Year of the Snake. You may think snakes are scary. But in Chinese h____51____, snakes have been a symbol of high position, new life and a close connection between humans and gods.
People have found that in the Erlitou Culture (18th—16th centuries BC), snake pictures often appeared on beautiful ____52____ (culture) relics (遗迹). An amazing discovery at the Erlitou Site in Henan is a long snake-like animal made of over 2,000 turquoise (绿松石) pieces. Experts think it could show e____53____ a dragon or a snake, and the snake was seen as the idea for dragon pictures. Such turquoise pieces were usually things buried with the dead of high position, ____54____ (show) how magic snakes were at that time.
Starting from the Shang Dynasty (about 16th century—11th century BC), people believed the world had t____55____ parts, with gods in heaven, humans on Earth, and the underworld being the place of the dead. When people saw snakes ____56____ (dig) into the ground, they believed that these animals could connect humans, the dead with the gods.
B____57____ of their ability to shed (蜕) skin, snakes were also connected to new life. “In ancient ____58____ (people) eyes, the snakes seemed to have died, but then they shed their skin and came back to life. This showed the idea of coming back to life after death,” said Han Ding, a teacher at Henan University.
Living on the Earth for more t____59____ 100 million years, the snake has never been far from Chinese people’s culture and life. “They served as a connection between humans and gods, and ____60____ (final) became an animal sign for common people,” said Wang Fang from the Jinsha Site Museum in Chengdu.

Astronauts would face dangers both getting to and surviving (生存) on Mars. Let’s learn about surviving a trip to Mars.
What would it take to keep people safe and healthy on a trip to Mars? Scientists are already working on it though the trip may be many years later.
Over the last 60 years, many spacecrafts (航天器) have flown by, orbited (沿轨道运行) and even landed on the Red Planet. However, humans could work faster and smarter than machines. That’s why the United States, China and other countries want to send people to Mars. But surviving this trip would not be easy.
A trip to Mars would be the farthest journey in human history. Mars is about 225 million kilometers away, so it would take astronauts at least six months to reach there. However, it only takes a few days to get to the moon.
While space travel is never free of danger, it takes a lot more health risks to travel in space for a long time. For one thing, staying in space for long periods makes the human body weak. Also, it puts pressure behind the eyes and causes eye problems. But gravity (重力) machines could help.
Then there’s space radiation (辐射) to worry about. It might raise the risk of health problems, especially for astronauts who will have long journeys. Scientists are working out the problems. They have found taking certain vitamins (维生素) can help.
Astronauts will have to pack light to lift off from Earth. But they won’t be able to get things they need like astronauts on the space station do. Astronauts on the space station practice for this by growing lettuce and other food in space. Engineers are developing 3D printing techniques which could allow future Mars astronauts to build tools as needed.

Astronauts would face dangers both getting to and surviving (生存) on Mars. Let’s learn about surviving a trip to Mars.
What would it take to keep people safe and healthy on a trip to Mars? Scientists are already working on it though the trip may be many years later.
Over the last 60 years many spacecrafts (航天器) have flown by, orbited (沿轨道运行) and even landed on the Red Planet.
