Many of us can’t wait for our first holiday without parents. It’s exciting to choose the destination, activities, and the company. But do these trips always go as planned? Let’s hear from Sophie, Fred, and Chris about their experiences.
Last summer, after exams, I invited my friend Paula to Greece. We flew to Athens and headed straight to Milos. Exhausted but eager, we went straight to the beach. You won’t believe what happened! We lay down, closed our eyes, and woke up two hours later — completely sunburned! We were boiling and thirsty. Lesson learned: never fall asleep in the sun without sunscreen!
—Sophie, 16
My first holiday was a weekend in London with my friends Jim and Simon. We took a taxi to the bus station, but when we arrived, I realized I’d lost my wallet — probably left it on the bus. Luckily, Jim and Simon lent me the money, so we continued on. Despite the rough start, we stayed at Jim’s house and had an incredible weekend sightseeing and exploring.
—Fred, 17
My first trip was a camping adventure with my friend Tom. We went to a campsite in the forest near our town. Not wanting my parents to drive us, we took a bus and walked the rest of the way. Unfortunately, as soon as we arrived, it began to rain, and before we could set up the tent, all our gear (装备) was soaked. Although I managed to pitch the tent quickly, thanks to my previous experience, everything inside was wet, Thankfully, the sun came out the next day, allowing us to dry off our belongings, and from that point on, we had a fantastic time camping in the forest.
—Chris, 15

A. It was rainy and wet. B. It was windy and dry.

I cannot remember a point in my life when I desired anything other than becoming a teacher. At the beginning of my senior year in high school, I began applying to the University of Connecticut. But what I didn’t realize was how expensive my dream was. I came from a middle-class family, and it seemed as though we’d always struggled to make ends meet.
I wasn’t the smartest person in my class, not even close; but my heart was in the right place, and I was determined. I applied for every scholarship I could get my hands on. What did I have to lose? And then my guidance counselor told me about the financial aid system. I applied, but I didn’t think I would qualify for that either.
After the holidays, my friends started receiving their acceptance letters from colleges, and I eagerly anticipated mine. Finally, a letter arrived from the University of Connecticut. Feelings of fear and joy overwhelmed me when I opened the envelope with trembling hands. I had done it! I cried for a while, feeling both extremely excited and afraid. I had been working a full-time job, but that was barely enough to pay for tuition, and it was impossible for my parents to finance my education.
Months went by before a letter from the financial aid office arrived. I opened it eagerly, but it was only a letter requesting more information to process my application. This happened over and over, and my hopes kept getting shot down. Finally, a bulky envelope arrived, the one that would determine whether I could attend college. Not only was financial aid going to help me out with my expenses, but also I won two of the scholarships I had applied for! I had actually made my dream come true.
I am now a junior at the University of Connecticut, pursuing a degree in English.

A. To test her determination.

In his new book, The Animals Among Us, John Bradshaw destroys a few myths (错误认识) about the pets that increasingly crowd our homes.
Some assumptions he questions are whether animals can feel embarrassment or guilt, and whether their minds are able to plan. In an interview, he said, “Alexandra Horowitz, the author of Our Dogs, Ourselves in New York, showed that the guilty look is actually a sign of the dog’s great ability to read human body language. Dogs put the guilty look on almost before the owner knows it’s time to get angry about something the dog has done. They almost seem to react as fast as our minds can. As soon as you look at the dog, the dog is already looking guilty.”
“You make the assumption that the dog was looking guilty before you looked at it. But the science shows that the dog doesn’t start looking guilty until the moment it sees the owner’s body language.
“So, what kind of abilities do you need to feel guilt? In our human terms, guilt is quite complex. You have to compare something you did in the past with some internal norms (内在的标准), which you have learned over the course of a long period of time. There’s no evidence that the dog’s mind can do that.
“I am not saying that dogs are stupid. Their minds are very good at doing what they do. They can react more quickly to human body language than humans can. But we assume their emotions are the same as ours, and that’s the mistake.
“As for planning, there has also been a lot of research but not so much into dogs. The problem is making comparisons between animals. Although humans and dogs share some similarities, the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层), the bit we do most of our thinking with, is reduced in dogs. They rely a lot more on smell. They do have an ability to plan if they’ve been faced with a particular situation before. But they can’t imagine themselves into a situation they’ve never been in.”
8. On which question are Alexandra’s and John’s opinions divided?
A. Whether dogs have guilty looks. B. Whether dogs use body language.
C. Whether dogs can feel guilty like man. D. Whether dogs can feel their owners’ anger.
9. Which of the following would John Bradshaw agree with?
A. Dogs are as clever as man. B. Dogs are easy to understand.
C. Dogs have the same emotions as man. D. Dogs can read human body language fast.
10. What is John Bradshaw’s opinion about dogs’ planning ability?
A. It’s limited. B. It’s common in dogs.
C. It’s beyond our expectations. D. It’s controlled by the cerebral cortex.
11. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To advertise John Bradshaw’s book. B. To stress the role of body language.
C. To show dogs’ communication skills. D. To correct misunderstandings about dogs.
【答案】8 C 9. D 10. A 11. D

Kabita Lohar lives in Pipriya village, a community located at the banks of the Mahakali River in Nepal. She is usually seen walking along the riverbank, carrying a blue box which contains equipment and chemicals to test the quality of water in the river. As Kabita carefully collects water samples (样本) from the river into her test-tube and observe the color of the water, she says, “Our rivers are getting polluted; we need to raise awareness and encourage the community to save our rivers.”
Kabita is one of the many citizen scientists trained by Oxfam. Around five years ago, Oxfam started working with the communities living in the riverbanks of the Mahakali River through a project called Transboundary Rivers of South Asia (TROSA). The project aims to give the riverside communities more access to and control over water resources. “We use this data to encourage effective measures and raise awareness about water pollution among the community members and local government,” says Kabita.
People used to believe that the water in at the Mahakali River contains something that is good for health, so it was a common practice to drink water directly from the river. But with the data on water pollution provided by citizen scientists like Kabita, they could raise awareness of the importance of not drinking water directly from the river.
Kabita says, “A few months ago, we spoke with our mayor (市长) about introducing measures to prevent the inflow of waste made by families and hotels into the river. Our mayor has stated that he will meet our demands. But we don’t just want promises; we want action, and we will keep following up until the promise becomes a reality.”
12. Why does Kabita walk along the bank?
A. To clean the riverbanks. B. To collect experimental data.
C. To enjoy nature for relaxation. D. To collect water from family use.
13. How did Kabita make the villagers drink clean water?
A. By showing them the truth.
B. By finding clean water for them.
C. By encouraging effective measures.
D. By stopping pouring waste into the river.
14. Which of the following can best describe Kabita?
A. Energetic. B. Confident. C. Organized. D. Determined.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Water pollution is serious in Nepal.
B. Science is helpful in reducing pollution.
C. A citizen scientist fights water pollution.
D. A youth makes a difference to her village.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

If we try to relate to the outside of our usual circle, we will feel more comfortable little by little. In this way, when a social event arrives that we want to attend or take part in, we will be better able to be comfortable in it.”(如果我们总是出于恐惧而逃避社交场合,我们就很难克服它们。 故选A项。

She came into my life when I was seven years old. My dad found her at work. She was wandering and starving. He took one look at her, and said, “Seems like you could use a good home.” He opened up the door to his truck and she jumped in. Her tail wagged (摇动) all the way.
I was still at school when dad arrived home with the puppy. Mom and dad fed her and gave her a bath. This would be my first pet.
I had always wanted a dog. My parents told me when I was old enough and responsible, I could have one. Well, I guess they figured the time was right.
When I walked back home, a white and black puppy with a red bow stuck to her head greeted me with many many puppy kisses. A wild joy took hold of me and a very special friendship was born that day.
Now she needed a name. My older brother laughed at her and said her tail didn’t wag back and forth like others, but went in a circle. He moved his finger around his ear, and said, “She’s squirrely”. Thus my puppy got her name, Squirrely.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Squirrely was a smart dog and brought me much joy. Every time she saw me, she would greet me with many gentle kisses, wagging her tail in circles. After school, I would walk her in the neighborhood, running, talking and laughing. When I gave her a bath, she would stare at me and kiss my hands gently, as if to say:“Thank you, my friend!”Also, I fed her and taught her to play hide and seek. With time passing by, we spent our days learning and growing together.
However, arthritis (关节炎) hit my best friend when she was 12. She seemed so painful and could barely walk. I carried her to see the vet in a hurry, but was told there was no special treatment for the disease caused by old age. Seeing her suffering so much, I felt heart-broken. All I could do was to accompany her all the time. Three weeks later, she left me quietly. I buried her in the yard, where we had a lot of fun. I knew my good friend would be with me always.

“As for planning there has also been a lot of research but not so much into dogs.
