M: I failed the test again. I’ve changed my study methods. It simply didn’t work.
W: Well, you are pushing yourself too hard. You should relax for a while.
Text 2
M: Can we talk later? It’s already noon. I need to go for lunch and have the video prepared. I have a meeting to attend in an hour.
W: OK, I’ll let you go.
Text 3
W: Mike, can you answer this question?
M: OK. It should be Li Bai or Li Shangyin, if my memory doesn’t fail me.
W: Well, that’s a good guess. But it’s actually Li He.
Text 4
W: Oh, I love these paper cuts. They look fantastic!
M: But now many young people think paper cutting is out of date. And I kind of fear that this form of folk art may be lost one day.
Text 5
M: I’m crazy about football and I’ve been playing it since primary school.
W: Wow, that’s quite something. But I don’t really care for football. My favorite sport is ping-pong and I watch every Open Competition
Text 6
M: Anna, do you have a sweet tooth?
W: Yes. I love eating sweet things very much. I usually have six or seven cups of tea every day. And I take at least five sugars in my tea. What about you?
M: I don’t have a sweet tooth. In my hometown, people don’t eat much sweet food. But after I came to the UK, I found that British people really have a sweet tooth.
W: You can’t be more right. We have a “sweet” culture. I think you’ll fall in love with our “sweet” culture sooner or later.
M: I guess so. As the old saying goes, “When you’re in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

W: I’m working on this report now.

W: Mr. Brown wants it to be on his desk by 1:30. I think I can finish it by then. The problem is I’ll have no time to go out for lunch today.
M: I don’t think you can work well staying hungry. Why not eat a sandwich first? My mom made it for me.
W: Thank you, Adam.
Text 8
W: Jeff, I’m glad you dropped by! I’ve been meaning to congratulate you on the Class Leadership Award.
M: Thanks, Professor Bronson. I was really happy to get it!
W: Now, what can I do for you today? Is there anything wrong with your homework?
M: No. Actually I want to talk to you about the test — you know, the one scheduled for Friday afternoon. Well, there’s a trip that my French class is taking. We’re going to Montreal for the weekend. We can get a chance to use our French. The bus leaves right in the middle of the test this Friday. So could I take the test on a different day ... like, Monday morning?
W: Ah ... Wait, let me just see one thing ... For your class, I was planning a take-home exam. Let’s see ... I guess you could come to class on Friday just to pick up the test paper. You can bring it to class on Wednesday, when I’ll be collecting everyone else’s.

M: A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and the latest Teens magazine.
W: Well, the book by Stephen Hawking is on the third floor. The magazine is on the second floor and the book by Margaret Mitchell is on the same floor as the magazine.
M: Thanks. Oh, my friend Jenny wants to borrow A Dream of Red Mansions. Is it available now?
W: No. Someone has already checked it out last week. If your friend wants to borrow it, she should come and fill out this form so she can be the first one to borrow it when the book is returned.
M: OK. I’ll tell her that. Now I’ll go to find the books I need. And I think I should hurry. I’m afraid it’ll rain soon. Dark clouds are gathering.
W: OK. You can read here if it rains.
Text 10
It’s always a good idea to make time to catch up with family and friends and share family vacations, birthdays, and graduations together. If you are meeting another family with small children, Legoland California is a good choice. Last summer, I celebrated my daughter’s birthday there. You can begin your vacation to Legoland by flying into San Diego International Airport. The park is about a 50-minute drive from the airport. We chose the Legoland Castle Hotel because it is one of the newest hotels connected to the park. You can get into the park at least 30 minutes before it opens to the public. The hotel includes a full hot breakfast with your stay. Visitors can also choose a themed room that best fits the family: Knights & Dragons, Royal Princess or Magic Wizard. We tried the last one. We had lots of happy memories of our stay in there. So I hope you are inspired to start planning a joint vacation with your family or friends to deepen your connections!

Zara Lachlan, 21 years old, is from the United Kingdom. Setting off from Portugal in a special rowing boat on October 27, she would be rowing across the Atlantic Ocean without support.
The trip is an extreme challenge for anyone, especially for Ms. Lachlan, who was new to the ocean. But her goal was to be the first woman, and the youngest person, to row solo (独自), non-stop, and unsupported across the Atlantic—from mainland Europe to mainland South America.
During the trip, Ms. Lachlan had to clean the bottom of her boat regularly. That meant jumping into the ocean—something she didn’t enjoy at first, since she didn’t swim well. Sometimes, bad weather turned her boat over. After 40 days, her phone got damaged. Along the way, she hurt her arm, cut her leg, and broke a finger. At one point, she was nearly run over by a large ship. Ms. Lachlan says that when she was crossing through the Canary Islands, she would row for 21 hours a day, but only cover 11 miles because of the wind and bad weather.
But there were many bright spots, too. For Ms. Lachlan, the trip was a chance to see nature as few people ever do. She said, “The sunrises and night skies were ‘breathtaking’. I spotted dolphins, sharks, and even killer whales. The trip gave me many memories that will stay with me for life.”
After 97 days, 9 hours, and 20 minutes, Ms. Lachlan arrived in French Guiana, on the coast of South America, on February 1. Though she fell short of the speed record by 19 hours, she took great pride in her achievement.
The journey also serves a philanthropic purpose, with Ms. Lachlan fundraising for organizations promoting women’s participation in sports. She hopes her deed inspires others, especially women and girls, to push their boundaries. “If I can do something that scares me,” she says, “then other women can attempt a challenge of their own.”
24.What was Zara Lachlan’s original intention for crossing the Atlantic solo?
A.To test herself and set a record.
B.To observe sea animals up close.
C.To raise money for African women.
D.To compete with the original record holder.
25.What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A.Challenges Zara Lachlan faced along the way.
B.Sailing strategies Zara Lachlan used in the trip.
C.Dangerous sea creatures Zara Lachlan met with.
D.Pleasure Zara Lachlan gained from boating solo.
26.What does the underlined word “philanthropic” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Educational. B.Environmental.
C.Charitable. D.Scientific.
27.What can be inferred about Zara Lachlan from the text?
A.She is an experienced ocean rower.
B.She enjoys swimming in the ocean.
C.She is both determined and inspiring.
D.She sets a speed record for the journey.
【答案】24.A 25.A 26.C 27.C
根据第二段中“But her goal was to be the first woman, and the youngest person, to row solo (独自), non-stop, and unsupported across the Atlantic—from mainland Europe to mainland South America. (但她的目标是成为第一位独自、不间断、无支援划船穿越大西洋的女性,也是最年轻的人——从欧洲大陆到南美大陆)”可知,Zara Lachlan独自穿越大西洋的初衷是挑战自我并创造纪录。故选A。
根据第三段“During the trip, Ms. Ms. Lachlan says that when she was crossing through the Canary Islands, she would row for 21 hours a day, but only cover 11 miles because of the wind and bad weather.(在旅途中,Lachlan女士必须定期清理船底。 故选A。
根据最后一段中“The journey also serves a philanthropic purpose, with Ms. Lachlan fundraising for organizations promoting women’s participation in sports. (这次旅行还有一个philanthropic目的,Lachlan女士正在为促进女性参与体育运动的组织筹集资金)”可知,Lachlan女士为促进女性参与体育运动的组织筹集资金,由此可知,这次旅行有慈善目的,故划线词“philanthropic”意为“慈善的”,与Charitable意思相近。故选C。
27.推理判断题。根据第一段“Zara Lachlan, 21 years old, is from the United Kingdom. Setting off from Portugal in a special rowing boat on October 27, she would be rowing across the Atlantic Ocean without support.(21岁的Zara Lachlan来自英国。10月27日,她从葡萄牙出发,乘坐一艘特殊的划艇,在没有支援的情况下划船穿越大西洋)”和倒数第二段“After 97 days, 9 hours, and 20 minutes, Ms. Lachlan arrived in French Guiana, on the coast of South America, on February 1.(经过97天9小时20分钟的旅行,拉克兰于2月1日抵达南美洲海岸的法属圭亚那)”可知,Zara Lachlan在没有支援的情况下用大约97天划船穿越大西洋,由此可知,她意志坚定;再根据最后一段中“She hopes her deed inspires others, especially women and girls, to push their boundaries. (她希望自己的行为能激励其他人,尤其是女性和女孩,去突破自己的界限)”可知,她希望自己的行为能激励其他人,由此可知,她很鼓舞人心。因此可以推断出Zara Lachlan既坚定又有启发性。故选C。

At Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), a unique program is helping veterans (老兵) find healing and renewal by connecting them with horses. The program works by teaching veterans about basic horse behavior and body language, offering therapeutic (治疗的) benefits that go beyond traditional methods. Through interactions with these sensitive animals, veterans are able to gain a better understanding of their own behavior and internal processes. Horses, known for their ability to mirror the emotions and physiological (生理学的) states of those around them, become a powerful tool for veterans to process their emotions.
One veteran, who suffered from severe mental diseases, shared how the program helped him recognize and manage his anxiety. Before participating in the program, he struggled with even simple tasks like walking to the end of his driveway to get the mail. His constant state of anxiety was so serious that he could not identify it. However, when he began working with a horse, he noticed the animal would become nervous when he was anxious. This instant biofeedback motivated him to calm himself, which in turn relaxed the horse. Over time, he learned to recognize the signs of anxiety and apply these relaxation techniques in other areas of his life.
Joanne Parchetta is another veteran whose life has been transformed by the program. She joined the program in 2024 and quickly realized the impact it had on her mental and emotional well-being. “I know that you are not defined by illness or physical disability, but it can discourage you and cause you to give up. This class with horses showed me that I can still achieve, and I can still dream,” Parchetta said. For Parchetta, working with her horse, Penny, became a lesson in patience and trust.
Beyond individual healing, the program also helps veterans develop social skills, enhancing their ability to engage with others. As veterans interact with horses, they learn to communicate more effectively, an essential skill they can carry into their daily lives. The program promotes a sense of hope, trust, self-worth, and relaxation, allowing veterans to reconnect with themselves and the world around them.
28.Why were horses used to help veterans find healing and renewal?
A.They are quite familiar to these veterans.
B.They were taught to serve these veterans.
C.They reflect the states of man’s emotions.
D.They have the power of traditional methods.
29.Why is the veteran mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To illustrate horses’ dependence on humans.
B.To highlight the common diseases of veterans.
C.To demonstrate the performance of mental diseases.
D.To show the outcome of the horse strategy.
30.What benefit did Parchetta get from the program?
A.It made her even more fond of animals.
B.It made her recover from physical illness.
C.It made her decision much more realistic.
D.It gave her confidence and determination.
31.What efforts does the program make in the last paragraph?
A.Getting people’s daily lives in order. B.Making people more socially capable.
C.Helping people work more effectively. D.Training people to live independently.
根据第一段中“Horses, known for their ability to mirror the emotions and physiological (生理学的) states of those around them, become a powerful tool for veterans to process their emotions. (马以能够反映周围人的情绪和生理状态而闻名,成为退伍军人处理情绪的有力工具。)”可知,马被用来帮助退伍军人找到治愈和重生的方法是因为它们能反映人的情绪状态。故选C。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段“One veteran, who suffered from severe mental diseases, shared how the program helped him recognize and manage his anxiety.
根据第三段中“ “I know that you are not defined by illness or physical disability, but it can discourage you and cause you to give up. This class with horses showed me that I can still achieve, and I can still dream,” Parchetta said. (“我知道,疾病或身体残疾并不能定义一个人,但它们可能会让人灰心丧气,甚至放弃。与马相处的课程让我明白,我仍然可以有所成就,仍然可以追逐梦想。”Parchetta说。)”可知,Parchetta从这个项目中获得了信心和决心。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Beyond individual healing, the program also helps veterans develop social skills, enhancing their ability to engage with others. (除了个人治疗外,该项目还帮助退伍军人发展社交技能,提高他们与他人交往的能力。)”可知,该项目在最后一段中做出的努力是让人们更具社交能力。故选B。
D
The placebo (安慰剂) effect is a well-known example of the brain’s power, allowing people in pain to improve if they are led to believe they are being treated. The opposite of this, nocebo effect, is also possible: patients who believe those processes will cause them to suffer ill effects can make themselves worse.
The roots of nocebo effect are difficult to manage. But in a paper in Health Psychology Review, researchers in Australia have gathered and ranked the contributing factors. Misinformation on social media seems to come on top. Social learning — drawing inferences (推断) from the views of others — was found to be powerful, and more effective than information given by a doctor.
This is a problem, says Cosette Saunders, lead author of the study. Social learning may not cause new disease, but it can drive harmful side-effects. And managing these side-effects costs health systems around the world billions of dollars.
Take cancer treatment. In recent years, new drugs have appeared to control the side-effects on people receiving chemotherapy (化疗), but vomiting (呕吐) hasn’t been reduced in cancer patients. Social learning may be responsible. “They’ll say, their mother-in-law had chemo twenty years ago and she was vomiting every day,” Dr. Saunders says. “Those kinds of long-held thoughts are influencing them now, even though the medical landscape has changed.”
Though the impact of the placebo effect has been recognised for centuries, work on the nocebo effect is new. Only in the past two decades have many scientists learned how a negative attitude can lead to physical symptoms. Dr. Saunders’ lab is one of many now trying to find ways to reduce the damage. One possibility is to balance warnings of bad side-effects with positive words from patients who had no problems. If Dr. Saunders finds something that works, she’ll pass it on.
32.What can we know about the nocebo effect?
A.It helps to improve health through positive thoughts.
B.It worsens one’s health through negative expectations.
C.It comes from bad opinions of doctors on social media.
D.It’s a modern discovery about the power of mental health.
33.What is the leading factor to the nocebo effect according to the study?
A.Doctors’ warnings about side-effects. B.Previous personal medical experiences.
C.Lack of proper treatment to the illness. D.Misinformation spread on social media.
34.Why might cancer patients still experience vomiting despite modern drugs?
A.They hold negative thoughts influenced by others
B.The new drugs are ineffective in the treatment.
C.Doctors fail to give treatment against vomiting.
D.Their bodies reject chemotherapy drugs naturally.
35.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Positive Thinking Counts a Lot in Medicine B.Side-Effects of Treatment Can Be Reduced
C.Social Media Misinformation Harms Health D.Placebo Effect Helps in the Cure of Disease
【答案】32.B 33.D 34.A 35.C
根据文章第一段“The opposite of this, nocebo effect, is also possible: patients who believe those processes will cause them to suffer ill effects can make themselves worse.(与此相反,反安慰剂效应也是可能的:那些认为这些过程会导致他们遭受不良影响的患者可能会使自己变得更糟)”可知,关于反安慰剂效应,我们可以知道的是它通过消极的期望恶化一个人的健康。故选B项。
根据文章第四段“‘They’ll say, their mother-in-law had chemo twenty years ago and she was vomiting every day,’ Dr. Saunders says.‘Those kinds of long-held thoughts are influencing them now’(他们会说,他们的岳母20年前做过化疗,每天都在呕吐。“那些长期持有的想法现在正在影响他们。”)”可知,现在有很多药品能控制病人化疗之后出现的呕吐现象,但是这种情况不见减少,这是因为以前有这种疾病的患者长期消极的想法影响着这些病人。故选A项。
When it comes to gift-giving, many people tend to give material possessions like clothing, electronics, or other items. 36 As it turns out, personalized experience gift ideas can have a lasting positive impact on the receiver.
One of the biggest benefits of giving experiences as gifts is that they often create lasting memories that can be cherished for a lifetime. Whether it’s a concert ticket, a cooking class, or a weekend getaway, experiences allow people to create new memories and bond with one another in a meaningful way. These memories can often be more valuable and enduring than physical possessions. 37
Experiences also have the power to strengthen relationships. When you give someone an experience as a gift, you are creating an opportunity for the receiver to spend quality time with you and create new memories together. 38 This can help deepen your bond and create a closer connection between you and your loved one.
In addition, experiences can be a great way to show your loved ones that you truly care about them. 39 It means you’ve taken the time to think about what they would truly enjoy and appreciate. This level of personalization can make the gift feel even more special and meaningful.
40 In a world where we are increasingly concerned about our impact on the environment, giving experiences as gifts can be a more sustainable choice. Experiences often involve activities like dining out, attending events, or taking a class, which create fewer carbon emissions and require fewer resources than the production and transportation of physical goods.
A.All these are priceless gifts.
B.Thus, they make special gifts.
C.You show this by choosing gifts that match their hobbies.
D.Moreover, experiences become a popular environmental trend.
E.Or rather, you are giving them the gift of your time and attention.
F.However, in this material-abundant world, experience gifts stand out.
G.Besides, experiences can often be more eco-friendly than physical gifts.

Secondly, we can separate waste paper, plastic, and metal for proper recycling. Thirdly, choose eco-friendly transportation means such as walking, cycling, or taking buses. Fourthly, we should use reusable bottles, bags, and containers instead of single-use plastic ones. Last but not least, let’s plant more trees and recycle waste things appropriately.
Let’s make our school and community cleaner and greener together. Let’s take an active part in the campaign from now on because our earth needs our care!

Where Beauty Lies
The backyard of the house we lived in, for some reason, attracted abandoned and homeless pets in the area, and at night, Grandpa would fill six plates with leftover food and some cheap cat food and take them out to the backyard to feed the pets. Sometimes there was even a stray (走失的) dog or two, It they were tamed (驯服), Grandpa would try to find homes for them.
One day, when I came home from school, I was surprised to see Grandma sitting alone drinking coffee. “Where’s Grandpa?” I asked.
“Oh, he’s in the basement working on an old stray cat. The cat is badly burned, but you know your grandpa. He’s determined to cure that old cat.”
I headed for the basement and hurried over to see if I could help. Grandpa turned to me and managed a weak smile. “Not very pretty, is he?” he said softly.
I couldn’t answer. I had never seen anything so horrible. The cat’s face was badly burned and his tail was missing. The cat just lay trembling in Grandpa’s arms.
“Is he going to die?” I whispered.
“Not if I can help him,” Grandpa said with tears in his eyes.
“Grandpa, even if he lives, he’s going to be so ugly,” I said.
“So what?” Grandpa said harshly. “Would you love me less if I were burned and became ugly?”
“Of course not,” I stammered
“Are you sure?” he asked and stared at me. “You know, I’ve always been told not to judge a book by its cover. Do you know what that mean?”
“Yes. But Mom always wants me to look pretty,” I argued. “All the most popular people at school are pretty.”
“That’s for now,” he explained. “Now is what young people think about, but now isn’t all there is to life. Animals don’t care who’s popular and who’s not. What animals care about is staying warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and food to keep them from being hungry.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Thanks to that cat, he changed my attitude to life.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
For the next month, Grandpa and I took care of the injured cat every day. We cleaned his wounds gently, applied medicine, and fed him with a dropper. Gradually, the cat started to improve. He began to purr softly when Grandpa stroked his fur, and his eyes, though still a bit cloudy, showed signs of life. I found myself looking forward to our daily sessions, even though the cat’s appearance was still far from pretty. Grandpa’s unwavering dedication taught me that beauty wasn’t just skin deep; it was in the kindness and care we showed to others.
Thanks to that cat, he changed my attitude to life. I realized that true beauty lay not in outward appearances but in the qualities of kindness, empathy, and compassion. I stopped worrying so much about what others thought of me and started focusing more on being a good person. I learned to appreciate the simple things in life, like the warmth of a smile or the sound of a cat’s purr. That old stray cat, once so battered and burned, became a symbol of hope and resilience in my heart, reminding me that even in the darkest of times, there was always light to be found.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
