The story said: Were you ever in a hospital when you were young? How did you feel? The doctors in Children’s Hospital are asking for money for children’s toys. Some children in the hospital must stay in bed for many weeks and they feel very lonely. Toys are needed to keep these sick children happy and quiet. If you want to help us with the money for them we will be grateful to you. After Mrs Weeks read the story, she said, “This story gives me an idea. ” “You want us to bring some money for the toys.” “We could bring some of our own toys for the children in the hospital,” said the boys and girls one after another. “Well, your ideas would be nice,” Mrs Weeks said, “but mine is different. ” “We could make some toys,” shouted one of them. Mrs Weeks smiled. “Do you think you could make toys?” she asked. “Yes, yes,” the whole class answered. All of them wanted to help the sick children in the hospital. “Great! Let’s start to make toys tomorrow,” said Mrs Weeks. On Saturday afternoon, Mrs Weeks took the toys made by her students to the hospital. The children in the hospital felt very happy. A few days later, Mrs Weeks read another newspaper story to the class: Some school pupils brought toys to Children’s Hospital last week. The toys were made by the pupils of Grade Three in Green Street School. The doctors said, “We have never had so many wonderful toys. Our children are very happy with them. They say, ‘THANK YOU, GRADETHREE. ‘” The whole class listened carefully and they started to understand the meaning of kindness. 26. How did the doctors in Children’s Hospital help the sick children at first? A. By making some toys for them. B. By giving some money to them. C. By borrowing some toys for them. D. By getting money to buy toys for them. 27. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. The toys. B. The hospitals. C. The doctors. D. The school pupils. 28. Which of the following ideas did Mrs Weeks have in mind? A. Asking the class to see the children in the hospital. B. Asking the class to raise some money for the children in the hospital. C. Asking the class to send some of their own toys to the children in the hospital. D. Asking the class to make some toys themselves for the children in the hospital. 29. What can we know about Mrs Weeks according to the passage? A. She wanted to make herself famous. B. She wanted everyone to know her class. C. She wanted to save some money for toys. D. She wanted to teach the pupils to help others. (B) Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word “cold”. For example, the body’s blood has been connected closely with the emotions (情感). People who show no human emotions or feelings are said to be cold-blooded. Cold-blooded people act in cruel ways. Cold can affect (影响) other parts of the body. But the expression “get cold feet” has nothing to do with cold or your feet. It means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be the CEO or a company. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned (辞职), and all the work of the company will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being the CEO when you understand the situation. Cold can also affect your shoulder. The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably means turning your back towards someone, instead of speaking to him or her face to face. You may give the cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise or lied to others about you. “A cold fish” is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. “Out in the cold” means not getting something that everybody else gets. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay rise—he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be. 30. What does it mean if you get cold feet? A. You feel brave to do something. B. You feel too cold to do something. C. You feel too afraid to do something. D. You feel very happy about doing something. 31. Who may you give a cold shoulder to? A. A helpful friend. B. An unfaithful friend. C. An unfriendly classmate. D. A hard-working classmate. 32. Which of the following best describes a person who is unwilling to offer much of himself to others? A. Cold-blooded. B. Getting cold feet. C. A cold shoulder. D. A cold fish. 33. What’s the passage mainly about? A Opinions about cold weather. B. Expressions connected with “cold”. C. Examples of people who have a cold. D. The relation between “cold” and “body”. (C) Han Qian, 35, is now responsible for recruitment(招募)at the Volunteer Department of the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee. Thirteen years ago, he was a volunteer at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. “I’m honored to take part in two Olympics,” said Han. “Being a volunteer is different from organizing them, though both are great experiences. Passion is necessary for being a volunteer, which requires volunteers to be in high spirits and warm-hearted. But being an organizer, they may face many new challenges because more thinking and planning are needed in organizing volunteers.” Because of COVID-19, volunteers need to be quarantined(隔离)after the test events as well as after the Winter Olympics and Paralympics(残奥会). This means they have to give up more time for this job. As around 90 percent of the volunteers are university students, according to Han, this could affect their schoolwork. So Han's team has helped schools to support the students as much as they can. Han’s team worked with schools to recruit students. “For example, volunteers from Tsinghua University are responsible for the National Stadium, while those from Peking University take care of the National Aquatics Center, Han said. The cold weather is another challenge, as some games will be held outdoors. The outdoor volunteers need to have physical training, like 15-kilometer walks, to prepare for their work. The organizing committee also provides hats, warmer pads and more frequent shifts for them. “Many volunteers have developed interest in winter sports because of this experience,” Han said. “I’ve seen them post pictures of themselves skiing and skating. I’m happy that the volunteering experience is meaningful for them.” 34. What does Han Qian think of being a volunteer? A. It needs great love from volunteers. B. There are many new challenges. C. It needs more thinking and planning. D. A volunteer needs to be quarantined. 35. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Paralympics. B. Winter Olympics. C. Test events. D. Being quarantined. 36. What is NOT the challenge Han’s team facing? A. Students have to give up a lot of time. B. Student volunteers' schoolwork will be affected. C. Volunteers have developed interest in winter sports. D. Outdoor volunteers need to have physical training. 37. What is the writer’s purpose of this passage? A. To show how to be a successful volunteer in the Olympic Games. B. To introduce the volunteer life of Han Qian in the Olympic Games. C. To explain why we should be a volunteer in the Olympic Games. D To introduce information about being a volunteer in the Olympic Games. (D) Do you miss the great snacks you had when you were a kid? Do they help you remember your happy childhood?
