Amy Cuddy is a social scientist who studies body language, especially how we show power (力量) with our bodies. According to her, there are two kinds of poses: high-power and low-power. For example, putting your hand on your face or neck is a low-power. It makes you look ___6___ and shows a need for protection (保护). Standing tall with your back straight up like a/an ___7___ is a high-power. It can make you appear stronger and more confident.
Cuddy thinks that changing our body language can make us feel more powerful. To ___8___ her idea, she did an experiment: First, she invited some candidates (候选人) to go for a job interview. Next, just ___9___ the interview, Cuddy asked half the candidates to do high-power poses and the other half to do low-power poses for two minutes each. Then they went to the interview room one by one to ___10___ with the interviewers. All the interviews were ___11___ and later watched by another group of interviewers who had no idea about the experiment. Most of them liked the candidates who did high-power before the interview better.
Cuddy gives a simple ___12___ for this. She says that doing some poses makes our brain feel different. For low-power, these feelings make people believe they are powerless. ___13___, they often do not deal with stress well, and they are less positive (积极地). Oppositely, Cuddy found that high-power gives our brain good feelings. These tell people that they are powerful, so they then feel confident. ___14___, Cuddy found that it didn’t matter what the candidates said or what skills they had. What mattered was how confident they seemed.
So, from it, we can see doing a high-power pose for two ___15___ can make us feel more powerful. And feeling powerful can change our lives.

Do you know the sun can provide a kind of useful energy? We call it solar energy Want to try using it yourself? Let’s do a cool project—making a solar tower!
You can try this project at home. You just need some tape, a pin (别针), paper, three cans and two big thick books. Now, we’re going to build the solar tower. First, make a pinwheel (纸风车) with a piece of paper. Secondly, cut off the tops and bottoms of the cans, place the cans on top of each other and tape them together. Next, use a pin to connect the pinwheel with the tower. Finally, put the can tower on top of the books, which are 5 cm apart from each other, so there’s a gap (间隔) at the bottom, allowing the air to get into the tower.
Now, all we have to do is place the whole thing near a window, where there’s direct sunlight. When the sun shines on the tower, it gets hot and warms the air in it. The warmer air moves upward through the tower and makes the pinwheel turn around as it passes by. Then cooler air comes in through the gap from the bottom of the tower, gets heated up, and rises, so the cycle goes on. This is how it works. How amazing!
So next time you feel the warm sun on your face, remember that it’s more than just a nice feeling—sunlight is a powerful and useful kind of energy.

By the Christmas tree sat a nice mini bike. For a short moment, Lily was filled with great excitement. She couldn’t imagine anything better than getting that bike. Then, she saw a baby doll-sitting on the sofa.
Then she knew. She knew that the mini bike is her brother’s and that doll would be hers. It was always like this. Tommy always got cool things: skateboards, science tools. The mini bike was just the latest cool thing. Lily always got the boring gifts: a set of toy cooking tools, nice dresses, beautiful hair bands. They were amazing for other girls, but she didn’t like them at all. To Lily, this doll seemed unusually boring again.
Tommy had seen that mini-bike in the front window of Moore’s Bike Shop, but hadn’t Lily too? Tommy had asked for the bike and had said it was the only thing he wanted for Christmas. Although Lily had the same thought, she was afraid to say it out loud, again. She was a shy girl, even in front of her family.
Tommy’s eyes grew wide at the bike. He knew it was his—no doll for him. He ran into his parents’ room and jumped up and down on the bed “Thank you, Dad! Thank you, mum!”
At the same time Lily walked into the other room silently. She was upset and a bit angry. It took a while for anyone to realize she was missing.
“What’s wrong, Lily?” Papa asked nicely. “Did you see your pretty doll?” “I saw it,” she said unhappily.
“What’s wrong, honey? You won’t believe how long your father waited in line to it” she said unhappily.
“What’s wrong, honey? You won’t believe how long your father waited in line to buy that doll! It was nearly 30 minutes.” Mama said.
Silence. Lily’s mouth was fixed. Her face was pale. “Oh, Mama, you know Lily is never excited by presents!” her brother laughed. “Come out and watch me ride!” And so they did.
However, Lily made a decision after a while. She needed to speak out what she really thought. Then, she took a deep breath, walked quickly outside…
26. Why was Lily unhappy when seeing the gifts?
A. Because she was never excited by gifts.
B. Because she liked the bike but it was not hers.
C. Because she couldn’t get the bike she asked for.
27. How did Tommy feel about his gift?
A. Happy and excited. B. Nervous but moved. C. Surprised and proud.
28. Why didn't Lily’s parents buy her a mini bike?
A. Because they didn’t care for her.
B. Because they liked her little brother more.
C. Because they thought Lily was like the other girls.
29. What would Lily most probably do at the end of the story?
A. She would watch her brother riding the bike.
B. She would leave home because she was angry.
C. She would tell her family that she wanted the bike.
30. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. The Best Christmas. B. The Silent Wheels. C. The Pretty Doll.

A. 完成图表。(共5小题; 每小题2分, 计10分)
根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。
A national survey was carried out in Australia on how children aged eight to sixteen read news. The survey found children as young as eight were interested in news. However, the spread of wrong information makes it difficult for children to understand events. The survey also found only one-third (1/3) of young people felt they could tell the fake (虚假的) news from the real.
Here are what adults can do to help children critically (思辨地) think about the news.
To help decide if a source (来源) can be trusted, they can ask the following questions. Is it clear who created this news? Viewers need to be able to ask the person or organization about why and how they created the story? Does it show facts or does it provide opinions? If opinions are put as facts, this may lead to wrong ideas. Are all the important people in it? If a story speaks up for organizations or groups of people, they should have the chance to reply to these opinions.
Some media may make use of people’s feelings. Discussing how children feel about news helps them decide which news programs to watch. Research shows sensationalist (耸人听闻的) news titles can receive more clicks online. Adults can also talk to children why people spread wrong information on purpose. For example, sometimes people on TV might over talk about the “advantages” of some medicine or food, so it’s more possible for people to follow the information and spend money on it without thinking carefully.
News media talk about events in different ways. Parents and teachers can help children be careful while reading news stories. In some stories people might not be able to show their ideas clearly and completely. In these cases, it’s best to find other news sources for the same story. Do they have the same facts and opinions?
News that can be trusted is important to societies. People depend on it to help make decisions in lives. Telling wrong information from real news is a challenge for everyone at present. Just listen to your children’s feelings. This can serve as a great starting point for improving their critical thinking abilities.
Help Children Think Critically about News

As Chinese users get used to their nightly surfing on Xiaohongshu, they are seeing a sudden coming of a lot of posts in English. Many users from the US, calling themselves “TikTok refugees” have joined this Chinese app. “Refugees” are usually used to describe people looking for new homes. Why are these American internet users giving themselves a new name?
“Hello everyone. I’m Ryan, a TikTok refugee. The American government is banning (禁止) TikTok, so we’re looking for another choice…We’re sorry to break in here.” one of the vloggers said in a video.
There is a growing belief in the US that the government will stick to banning TikTok because of the “China danger” in information safety. This leaves its 170 million users frustrated. The ban is set to begin on Sunday, unless TikTok is sold by its parent company, ByteDance.
As US users tag themselves with the hashtag (标签) #tiktokrefugees#, they are moving to the Chinese app. By Tuesday, there were over 114,000 posts with the hashtag, and more than 2 million discussions and 73 million views by 6 p. m. Beijing time. Xiaohongshu became the most downloaded app on the US app store on Tuesday.
Chinese users have shown kindness to the newcomers, offering to help them learn Chinese. However, not all cultural exchanges have gone well. A user from Beijing, Yuzijiang, received criticism from US users for “supporting stereotypes (刻板印象)” after posting a video of herself dancing with her curly hair. Many Chinese users are worried that US ideas and harmful cultures like gambling (赌博) and drug use could spread in the Chinese online community.
An expert from Fudan University says: “The sudden rise of TikTok refugees may not ________. Since American ideas are greatly different from those in China, US culture will likely have little lasting influence on Xiaohongshu’s community.”

Do you know the sun can provide a kind of useful energy? We call it solar energy. Want to try using it yourself?
So next time you feel the warm sun on your face remember that it’s more than just a nice feeling—sunlight is a powerful and useful kind of energy.
21. How does the writer introduce the topic?

C. To make the air get out of the tower.
24. How does the air travel through the tower?
A. A B. B C. C
25. In which part of a newspaper can we probably find the text?

He ran into his parents’ room and jumped up and down on the bed, “Thank you, Dad!

As US users tag themselves with the hashtag (标签) #tiktokrefugees# they are moving to the Chinese app.
