For Antonella Positano, her passion for art and architecture traces back to her childhood. “As a child, I loved creating imaginary houses with LEGO, and many of my childhood drawings were about landscapes and little houses,” the artist recalled. Today, this love serves as the foundation of her architectural illustrations, made with dynamic lines of black ink that breathe life into these buildings.
“The purpose when I choose an architectural subject to represent is to highlight its essence (本质) through my hand,” Positano said. “I often let myself be guided by the interaction I feel with a particular subject, but it’s almost always them choosing me, not the other way around. I don’t have any particular preferences.”
As a fan of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, she always looks for volume that can translate into strong contrasts and let her play with shadows. Positano, who is about to finish her Architecture degree, uses high-quality photographs as references for her illustrations. “The images allow me to carefully analyze the particulars and work calmly on the composition, reflecting on the final result I want to achieve,” she explained. “I use them as references, but they’re never a guide to follow strictly for completing the work; at that point, it would just be a faithful copy, and I love authenticity (真实性).
While she has experimented with other tools, Positano admits that nothing matches the excitement of black ink. “I enjoy how using a pen lets me control the thickness of the lines as I want. I use ink in my work because I see it as the link between the past and present.”
Ultimately, Positano shares that she doesn’t seek recognition or commercial success but the power to move others through the universal language of architecture. “I know I’ve succeeded when I see emotions like inspiration in the eyes of those who view my works at exhibitions.”
4. What was Positano’s childhood passion for?
A. Building real houses.
B. Playing with various toys.
C. Drawing landscapes and little houses.
D. Reading books about architecture.
5. How does Positano choose her architectural subjects to illustrate?
A. She selects them based on their popularity.
B. She randomly picks any architectural subject.
C. She has specific preferences for certain styles.
D. She lets the subjects choose her based on her feelings
6. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. Positano’s way of creating illustrations.
B. The importance of high-quality photographs in art.
C. The strict guidelines she follows for her illustrations.
D. The influence of her Architecture degree on her work.
7. What is Positano’s ultimate goal in her architectural illustrations?
A. Gaining commercial success. B. Touching hearts with architecture.
C. Winning awards and recognition. D. Selling her works at high prices.

Cats perform better than toddlers (学步幼儿) on a simple measure of language comprehension. The research, published on Oct. 4 in the journal Scientific Reports, revealed that cats form associations between pictures and words around four times faster than human toddlers do.
Language is the most important tool humans use to communicate. But the ability to comprehend speech is not unique to humans. African gray parrots can understand and respond to spoken instructions. Dogs, meanwhile, have been trained to understand and respond to simple vocabulary.
“However, we know far less about cats,” said Dr. Carlo Siracusa, a veterinary behaviorist at the University of Pennsylvania. There is limited evidence that cats can respond to pointing, and research in the past five years has shown that cats can recognize not only their own names but also those of familiar humans and animals. But can they associate words with objects more generally?
To test this theory, Saho Takagi and her team at Azabu University in Japan gave 31 adult cats a simple word game used to investigate the same ability in babies. The cats were shown two nine-second cartoon clips (片段) with recordings of their owners repeating a made-up word over each image.
The order of clips-a red sun labeled “paramo” and a blue unicorn with the word “keraru” — was repeated until the cats appeared to get bored. After a short break, the image clips were repeated, but this time, half of the pairings were inverted (颠倒). The switched clips visibly confused the cats, with recordings of “paramo” alongside the unicorn and “keraru” with the sun holding the cats’ interest an average of 15% longer.
That the cats noticed this change and were clearly perplexed by it is good evidence that they had formed a link between the words and images. Some cats looked at the screen with big, open eyes when the “switched” condition was on.
The experiment revealed that the cats were able to form associations between pictures and words. However, these comparisons should not be overinterpreted. Siracusa said, “You’re comparing an adult animal with an immature animal from a different species.
8. What was the purpose of the word game conducted by Saho Takagi’s team?
A. To investigate if cats can associate words with objects.
B. To test if cats can learn from watching cartoon clips.
C. To compare the attention focus of cats and toddlers.
D. To train cats to respond to their owners’ voices.
9. What does the underlined word “perplexed” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Scared. B. Amused. C. Confused. D. Excited.
10. What did Siracusa think of the study?
A. It was successful. B. It had limitations.
C. It was significant. D. It lacked evidence.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Cats’ Unique Language Skills.
B. Advantages of Toddlers in Language Learning.
C. The Importance of Language in Communication.
D. Research on Cats’ Ability to Understand Language.

“We don’t want to be tripping over Zimmer frames (助行架) all the time,” said John, 73, as he expressed his disappointment over the frailer (更虚弱的) residents in his retirement village. John and his wife, Jean, moved to the village a year ago with the expectation of living in an active, independent community. Instead, John found the presence of much older, frail residents disheartening.
In my recent research published in The Gerontologist we conducted 80 in-depth interviews with older adults living in retirement villages across the UK and Australia. Our aim was to find out why people pick retirement living and see if their hopes matched or conflicted with those of other residents. What astonished us most was the level of resentment (怨恨) that some residents expressed towards their frailer neighbors.
We found that some residents chose retirement living specifically to delay the challenges of old age and extend their sense of midlife vitality. David, 76, and his wife, Pam, 73, moved to a UK retirement village to stay active, fit, and independent. In contrast, others chose the same retirement village because they were concerned about increasing frailty and worsening health and sought a community that they felt could support them in these challenges..
These contrasting sets of needs are often in conflict. People who move into retirement villages to prolong midlife and to feel part of an active, independent community, are not always accepting of frailer residents.
Some people who moved there because they felt they’d get more help with their weaknesses sometimes felt left out and unsupported. But others demonstrated a more accepting attitude towards older residents. Ralph, 72, recognized that he might be more frail himself in the future and welcomed support from fellow residents.
Retirement communities are often loosely defined and appear to offer all things to all people. But they can only be a desirable model if they genuinely recognize and accommodate the diverse needs of older people.
12. What was the main reason for John’s disappointment?
A. The presence of frailer residents.
B. The high cost of living in the village.
C. The poor quality of services provided.
D. The lack of activities in the retirement village.
13. What surprised the author most about the research finding?
A. The popularity of retirement villages.
B. The business size of retirement living.
C. The high percentage of residents over 65.
D. The degree of anger towards frailer neighbors.
14. How did Ralph feel about supporting frailer residents?
A. He felt it a burden. B. He warmly welcomed it.
C. He was strongly opposed to it. D. He was indifferent to it.
15. What is the overall message of the text?
A. Retirement villages are perfect for all seniors.
B. The problems faced by older people are different.
C. Retirement villages should consider the diverse needs of the elderly.
D. Most seniors prefer to live alone rather than in retirement villages.

Self-discipline is the ability to push yourself forward, slay motivated, and take action, regardless of how you’re feeling, physically or emotionally. ____16____ Now let’s look at some practical science-backed strategies to become more self-disciplined in life.
Choose a goal.
Begin by choosing just one goal that you want to focus on to develop your self-discipline. For instance, perhaps you want to start exercising every evening. You could even practice self-discipline on very small goals such as concentrating on a book for an hour without checking your messages, or avoiding unhealthy food for one day. ____17____
Find your motivation.
____18____ Try to express these reasons in a positive way. Instead of saying “I want to get this task off my to-do list”, say “I want to do this task so that I can meet my objectives and feel satisfied with myself!” When you list the positive reasons why you want to achieve something, you’ll find it much easier to get the job done.
Identify barriers.
Now you need to identify the barriers that you’ll likely face when working towards your goal. Imagine that your goal is to read one book a week to enhance your reading skills. ____19____ For example, when you find a book you like, it’s hard to find time each day to read. Once you’ve identified barriers, come up with a strategy to overcome each one.
____20____
As you work on your self-discipline, pay attention to how you’re feeling. You might feel free, happy, proud, and energized. Also, think about keeping a journal to write down your self-discipline goal and to track your progress. This reinforces the positive changes that you’re implementing (实施) in your life, and gives you a record that you can look back on to see the progress that you’ve made.
A. Monitor your progress.
B. Pay attention to your feelings.
C. Understand what helps improve self-discipline.
D. You may face a number of difficulties in reaching this goal.
E. It is a basic life skill that determines success and happiness.
F. Once you’ve chosen a goal, list the reasons why you want to achieve it.
G. Remember, starting small is a good way to start developing your self-discipline.

Pity party for one! I should have been enjoying the New Year celebrations, especially while living in New York City, filled with lights and decorations along the streets. Instead, I was feeling sorry for myself. Sitting by myself in a cafe, I couldn’t remember ever feeling lonelier.
I’d taken the bus downtown to do some shopping. With temperatures continuing to drop, I needed a new winter coat. But a day out on my own wasn’t much fun. Why couldn’t my niece have come with me? When I’d casually mentioned I was doing some New Year shopping today, I wanted so badly for her to ask, “Can I come too, Aunt?” My ears were not blessed with those words. She had better things to do.
Having finished my lunch, I gathered my things, left the cafe and walked to the bus stop in the cold wind. The bus arrived. I climbed on and paid my fare, glad that I had a long ride home. I was happy to have a long trip home. It gave me more time to be upset. I was still angry as the bus moved, adding up all the things I’d done for my niece and comparing it with what I got in return. It wasn’t fair.
I barely looked up when we stopped to pick up a nicely dressed middle-aged lady. I might not have noticed her at all if it hadn’t been for the pretty purple tote bag (手提袋) under her arm. When she took the seat across the aisle (过道), I couldn’t resist asking where she’d gotten it.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I can’t recall the name of the store.”
“Thank you, anyway,” I said disappointedly.
At the next stop the person next to me got up, and the woman moved to sit beside me. She didn’t say a word. One by one she transferred the items in the purple tote bag into her handbag.
“Is she…?” I thought in disbelief.
“Oh, no!” I said. “I can’t take your lovely bag!”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
“You’re not taking it. I’m giving it to you,” she said.

C 5. D 6. A 7. B

A 9. C 10. B 11. D

根据第三段“But can they associate words with objects more generally?(但是,它们是否更能普遍地将单词与物体联系起来呢?)”和第四段“To test this theory, Saho Takagi and her team at Azabu University in Japan gave 31 adult cats a simple word game used to investigate the same ability in babies.(为了验证这一理论,日本麻布大学的佐藤多惠和她的团队对31只成年猫进行了一项简单的文字游戏,该游戏用于调查婴儿的相同能力。)” 故选A。
根据第五段“The switched clips visibly confused the cats(切换后片段明显让猫咪们感到困惑。)”和第六段“Some cats looked at the screen with big, open eyes when the ‘switched’ condition was on.(当处于“切换”状态时,一些猫睁大眼睛盯着屏幕。)”
根据最后一段“However, these comparisons should not be overinterpreted. Siracusa said, “You’re comparing an adult animal with an immature animal from a different species.”(然而,这些比较不应被过度解读。Siracusa说:“你这是在把一只成年动物和另一个物种的未成年动物进行比较。)”可知,两者属于不同的物种,且处于不同的生命阶段,由此可知,Siracusa认为这项研究存在局限性。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第一段提到“Cats perform better than toddlers on a simple measure of language comprehension.(在理解语言的一项简单测试中,猫表现得比学步幼儿更好。)”
D
“We don’t want to be tripping over Zimmer frames (助行架) all the time,” said John, 73, as he expressed his disappointment over the frailer (更虚弱的) residents in his retirement village. John and his wife, Jean, moved to the village a year ago with the expectation of living in an active, independent community. Instead, John found the presence of much older, frail residents disheartening.
In my recent research published in The Gerontologist, we conducted 80 in-depth interviews with older adults living in retirement villages across the UK and Australia.
A He felt it a burden.
A 13. D 14. B 15. C

But they can only be a desirable model if they genuinely recognize and accommodate the diverse needs of older people.(退休社区的定义往往很宽泛,似乎能为所有人提供一切。
Self-discipline is the ability to push yourself forward, slay motivated, and take action, regardless of how you’re feeling, physically or emotionally. ____16____ Now let’s look at some practical science-backed strategies to become more self-disciplined in life.
Choose a goal
E 17. G 18. F 19. D 20. A

上文“Self-discipline is the ability to push yourself forward, stay motivated, and take action, regardless of how you’re feeling, physically or emotionally.(自律是一种无论你身体或情感上感觉如何,都能推动自己前进、保持动力并采取行动的能力)”说明了自律的定义。
上文“You could even practice self-discipline on very small goals such as concentrating on a book for an hour without checking your messages, or avoiding unhealthy food for one day.(你甚至可以在非常小的目标上练习自律,比如集中精力看一个小时的书而不查看消息,或者一天不吃不健康的食物)”提到了从小的目标开始练习自律。 且“starting small”和前文中的“on very small goals”相呼应。故选G。
主题句“Find your motivation.(找到你的动力)”以及下文“Try to express these reasons in a positive way.(试着以积极的方式表达这些原因)”说明要找自律的原因并用积极的方式表达他们。 符合语境,承接上文,“list the reasons”和下文中的“express these reasons”相呼应。故选F。
上文“Imagine that your goal is to read one book a week to enhance your reading skills.(假设你的目标是每周读一本书以提高阅读能力)”提出了一个具体的目标。
下文“As you work on your self - discipline, pay attention to how you’re feeling. You might feel free, happy, proud, and energized. Also, think about keeping a journal to write down your self - discipline goal and to track your progress.(当你在自律方面努力时,注意你的感受。你可能会感到自由、快乐、自豪和充满活力。此外,考虑写日记来记录你的自律目标并跟踪你的进展)”说明在自律过程中要关注自己的感受并记录进展。所以A项“监控你的进展。”符合语境,概括了本段关于监控自律进展的内容,适合作本段的主旨句。故填A。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
“You’re not taking it. I’m giving it to you,” she said.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Her words warmed my heart.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“You’re not taking it. I’m giving it to you,” she said. I was surprised by her words and didn’t know what to say. “But why would you give it to me?” I asked. She smiled and said, “I saw how you admired the bag when I got on the bus. And I wanted to do something to brighten your day. This bag has brought me a lot of joy, but now it’s time for it to bring joy to someone else. Please, accept it as a New Year gift.”
Her words warmed my heart. Here this stranger was offering me a gift of kindness. It was a reminder that even in the midst of loneliness and disappointment, there was still goodness in the world. As the bus continued on its route, I held the pretty purple tote bag tightly in my lap, feeling a sense of gratitude and hope replace the anger and sadness that had been plaguing me. The unexpected gift from this stranger turned my pity party into a celebration of the kindness and compassion that could be found even in the most unexpected places.
