B Paul Salopek a writer for National Geographic, started a 38,624-kilometre journey from the birthplace of humans in Africa in 2013. He planned to hike through the Middle East, Asia, North America hoping to reach South America by 2027. He tries to follow in the footsteps of ancient humans out of Africa and rediscover the planet. China is an important stop on Salopek’s journey. In 2021, he started his walking in Yunnan. Salopek met people from different ethnic minorities (少数民族). He was deeply moved by the warmth of the local people, who invited him to their homes and treated him with special food. He tried to learn useful expressions from their languages, but they were too difficult to understand. During the walk, Salopek loved the special Yunnan lifestyle. He would spend several days living with a farmer, talking for a long time under a tree. He would stop to film some young men who were building their houses. He was surprised that in the villages, people still use their hands to build houses and roads, making tools for living and farming. He was impressed by how people slowed down and enjoyed their traditional way of life. Actually Salopek is practising slow journalism (新闻工作) along the way, which encourages reporting news with close attention and careful study. “Though technology brings us closer, too much information leaves us little time to think,” said Salopek, “It allows me to make hidden connections that we miss when we travel too fast and catch valuable moments during the journey.” Salopek is still on the road to uncover the beauty of different cultures. We look forward to seeing what his journey takes him next. 19. Where did Salopek begin his journey? A. Africa. B. Asia. C. North America. D. South America. 20. What did Salopek do in Yunnan? A. Learned the local language well. B. Worked on the field with local farmers. C. Invited local people to have meals together. D. Recorded how local people made houses. 21. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A Slow journalism. B. Encouraging news. C. Modern technology. D. Plenty of information. 22. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. Enjoying Slow Life in Yunnan B. Seeing the World Through News C. Finding My Path on Journeys D. Discovering the World Step by Step C Imagine picking up a new book that you’re excited to read, sitting in your favorite corner, and turning to the last chapter (章节). While most readers open to page one, there are many people who jump right into the juiciest part of the book—the end, before going back to the beginning and starting from there. Because that changes the normal experience of reading the book, some people say readers should always begin with the first chapter. Others think starting at the end is perfectly acceptable and may even be the best way to read a book. What do you think? Is it OK to read the last chapter first? There are many different ways to enjoy a book, and none of them are wrong. Starting with the last pages makes some readers even more curious about the story and helps them decide whether the book is worth reading. Other people don’t like to worry about what happens to the characters. Reading ahead helps them relax and appreciate the writing similar to when people reread a book and get more out of it the second time. Some people also enjoy the excitement of guessing exactly how the story will reach an ending they already know. However, some people think books are meant to be read in the order in which they’re written. Part of the enjoyment of reading a good book is following the action from start to finish, discovering new information about the story and characters bit by bit, and being surprised by the story. Reading the last chapter first is disrespectful to the writer who put in a lot of effort. And if you know the ending, you have to avoid making other people who are reading it feel terrible. That means it’s safer not to discuss it with them, though talking about a book can be a big part of the fun of reading it. 23. How does the writer lead into the topic? A. By comparing facts. B. By describing a scene. C. By listing numbers. D. By giving an example. 24. What does the underlined word “appreciate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Question. B. Collect. C. Admire. D. Translate. 25. Which is a reason for reading the last chapter first according to Paragraph 2? A. To reread the book more easily. B. To keep curious about the ending of the book. C. To know which is the most interesting chapter. D. To decide if it’s necessary to read the whole book. 26. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Reading is a process of discovering a book. B. Reading from the end shows respect to the writer. C. Talking about a book makes reading less interesting. D. Discussing the ending while reading is always acceptable. D On the Japanese island of Yakushima, two species (物种) of animals, the macaque monkeys and sika deer, have developed an unusual relationship. Monkeys ride around the island on the deer’s backs, smoothing their soft fur as they go. In return, the deer eat fruit left by the monkeys and clean their droppings at night, inadvertently (无意地) cleaning the monkeys’ homes. It appears that the two species actively communicate to influence each other’s behavior. Professor Cedric Sueur, an animal behavior expert at the University of Strasbourg, notes that this action suggests a form of communication. “There’s a kind of watching, thinking or understanding.” He says. While it is common for animals to learn behaviors from members of their own species, Sueur and his partners believe that the behavior of the deer and monkeys shows that social learning can appear across species. They name it as “co-culture”. “I think there are a lot of species showing co-culture though we’ve never thought about it before.” says Sueur. As their studies get further, more examples of co-culture are noticed. In Yellowstone Park, crows follow grey wolves to find dead animals in the woods during winter. In the Indian Ocean, octopuses and grouper fish have been found hunting together. These suggest that cross-species cultural influence is more widespread than we thought before. Professor Jean Leca, an animal expert from Canada, stressed that people used to think animals don’t have any culture, but the study shows it is wrong now. “It’s very reasonable (合情理的) that different animal species can influence each other in their ways of living and how they see the world. This new idea on animal behavior could change our understanding of the animal kingdom. We should also remember that human behavior might not be the only one of its kind in the world,” he says, “However, more research is needed to fully understand how co-culture develops in the animal world. We scientists must dig deeper to discover the mysteries of it.” 27. Why does the writer mention the macaque monkeys and sika deer in the first paragraph? A. To describe a picture. B. To tell us a story. C. To lead into the topic. D. To ask readers a question. 28. What can we know from Paragraphs 2&3? A. Crows can’t find food without the help of wolves. B. Social learning is possible among different species. C. Co-culture is more common on the land than in the ocean. D. Animals can communicate with each other by talking aloud. 29. What is Jean Leca’s opinion towards “co-culture”? A. It has been fully discovered by scientists. B. It only happens among some species by accident. C. It’s so normal that people shouldn’t be surprised at it. D. It needs to be studied further by scientists in the future. 30. In which part of the magazine can we probably read the passage? A. Movie Stars. B. Nature World. C. Community Pioneer. D. In fact, this can be a good thing and you can even learn from it. For example, sometimes you may not realize that your ideas are wrong. But by discussing them with others, you have a chance to learn, according to Li Songwei, another psychologist. ____34____ That confidence will build over time and can shape your personality. A. Also, expressing different opinions openly makes you look more confident. B. But you should be careful about how you express your opinions. C. Try to express your own opinion politely. D. Today I want to tell you about a little invention I made. It’s called the book holder. I love reading, but sometimes I found it hard to hold a book for a long time. My arms got tired very soon and I had to stop reading to rest. The problem made me think about inventing a book holder. Here was my invention process. First, I drew a simple design on a piece of paper. Then I collected some materials, including an old box with really thick paper and a clip, which is a small metal object to hold things together. Finally, I glue the two pieces of paper cut from the box together and put the clip to the top. I opened my book and placed the book on it. The book was held by it perfectly. I made it, now I just put the book holder on my desk when I want to read, I don’t have to use my arms. Actually, Salopek is practising slow journalism (新闻工作) along the way, which encourages reporting news with close attention and careful study. A. 【答案】23. B 24. C 25. D 26. 30 In which part of the magazine can we probably read the passage? A. Movie Stars. B. Nature World. C. Community Pioneer. D. Sports Events. 【答案】27. C 28. B 29. D 30. We scientists must dig deeper to discover the mysteries of it.” Everyone has different opinions. But by discussing them with others, you have a chance to learn, according to Li Songwei, another psychologist. ____34____ That confidence will build over time and can shape your personality. A. I love reading, but sometimes I found IT hard to hold a book for a long time. My arms got tired very soon, and I had to stop reading to rest. The problem made me think about inventing a book holder. Here was my invention process. First I drew a simple design on a piece of paper. Then I collected some materials, including an old box with really thick paper and a clip, which is a small metal object to hold things together. Finally, I glued the two pieces of paper cut from the box together and put the clip to the top. I opened my book and a place, the book on IT. The book was held by IT perfectly. I made IT. Now I just put the books holder on my desk when I want to read, I don't have to use my arms. I'm really proud of my little invention. It's not very beautiful, but I really enjoy reading more by using IT. Maybe I can make IT Better in the future like adding a light, but for now, i'm just happy to have IT.
