Did you know some kinds of paper are more “dangerous” than others? Three scientists from Denmark found that 65-micrometer-thick paper is most likely to cut our skin (皮肤). They won the Physics Prize for this at the 2024 Pineapple Science Award in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, on Nov 23. The scientists got paper with different thicknesses from 30 to 220 micrometers. They tested them on man-made fingers made from ballistic gel. This gel has the toughness of human skin. For thin paper, the scientists found it couldn’t cut the “fingers”—it just bent (弯曲). And for thicker paper, it left a mark on the fingers but couldn’t break the “skin”. When they tried 65-micrometer-thick paper, the scientists found it cut the fingers the most, about once every five tries. This is close to the thickness of journal (期刊) paper, like Nature and Science. A4 printer paper we often use is about 100 micrometers thick and is much safer. The cutting angle (角度) is also important. Pushing the paper straight down onto the fingers didn’t often make a cut. Pushing it at a slanted (倾斜的) angle made more cuts. The scientists hope their findings can help make safer things out of paper. They also made a cheap paper knife called the Papermachete that can cut through apples and chicken. 5. Probably not a real one! That’s because animals can’t really cry. They can make tears, but only humans can cry because of emotion (情感), reported The New York Times. Now let’s learn about our tears and crying. ②Tears come in three types, according to Discover Magazine. Most of the time, our eyes make basal tears (基础性眼泪) to keep them from getting dry. When we cut onions, or when something gets in our eyes, reflex tears (反射性眼泪) pour down to help wash out foreign objects. Then there are emotional tears. They are special because they come from strong feelings, such as sadness and happiness. Emotional tears also have more protein (蛋白质) in them than the ones that come about from cutting onions, said Time magazine. Scientists think the protein makes emotional tears thicker and slower to run down the face. That way, other people can see them more easily. ③Young kids cry a lot, but it’s often just because something happens to them, like falling over or dropping their ice cream. But as we grow up, we cry more because of our feelings for others. “Your world becomes greater, so there are more people who become more important to you,” Ad Vingerhoets, a scientist from Tilburg University in the Netherlands, told The New York Times. ④In human society, crying is a call for help. It quickly lets others see that something is not right, and brings people closer. Crying also helps us calm down and think about difficult things, said Medical News Today. 9. How does the writer begin the passage? A. By showing a dialogue. B. By telling a story. C. By recommending a saying. D. By putting a question. 10. Our reflex tears ________. A. are made most of the time B. help to protect our eyes C. express our strong feelings D. stop our eyes getting dry 11. The last paragraph mainly talks about ________. A. crying is a call for help B. what humans cry for C. how crying helps humans D. crying a lot is harmful 12. How is the passage organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, …) A. B. C. D. 【答案】9. D 10. Do we have the power to influence other people in our lives? The 1946 US film It’s A Wonderful Life tells us the answer. In the film, everyone has his or her own guardian angel (守护天使). It starts with George Bailey, a man who has abandoned all his dreams and wants to kill himself on Christmas Eve because he is in financial (财务的) difficulties. This draws the attention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody. George wishes that he had never been born. Then the angel takes George across space and time to see what his town is like now without him. George sees how different life is for his family and the people in his town! He sees his brother Harry’s grave (坟墓). But in real life, Harry is a war hero now because he saved many people’s lives during World War II. George recalls that one day when he was 12, his brother Harry fell through ice. He jumped into the freezing water and saved Harry. George is very sad. He realizes that he means a lot to his family and his town. So he changes his mind and goes home happily. In the film, George is very kind-hearted. He gives up many things to help the people in his town. He even helps them achieve their dream of having their own homes. In the end, George’s kindness is repaid when nearly everyone in his town comes together to help him through his troubles. Just as the angel says, “No man is a failure who has friends.” 41. 5. 9. It starts with George Bailey, a man who has abandoned all his dreams and wants to kill himself on Christmas Eve because he is in financial (财务的) difficulties.
